Comparative Summary

As Dr. James R. Mattingly DDS sees it, his job is to educate his patients about their options for dental treatment, and never to encourage anything but necessary treatment. He says he treats his patients as he would his own family, a philosophy of concerned care that’s made his Walnut Creek dental practice a local favorite and earned him a “Best in the Bay” designation from San Francisco news affiliate KRON.

Dr. Mattingly believes in dental technology and uses a state-of-the-art dental laser to diagnose tooth decay. He can identify and repair cavities at the earliest stages, before they grow and do greater damage. The office has also switched to digital x-rays, a technology that exposes patients to 80 percent less radiation than traditional x-ray equipment. The images immediately load to a computer for easy viewing and manipulation, enabling a clearer and more accurate diagnosis.

Another of the office’s useful tools is its intraoral camera, which lets Dr. Mattingly project large pictures of the inside of patients’ mouths onto a large screen. The intraoral camera makes it much easier for patients to understand what’s happening with their teeth and gums, and how their treatment will proceed.

Dr. Mattingly says his office prides itself on punctuality. “I’m not a fan of sitting around waiting for 30 minutes when I go to the doctor,” he says, “so we work diligently to abide by our patients’ schedules.” Whatever time a patient does spend waiting for an appointment is spent in a comfortable, relaxing area with soft, leather chairs, and an array of tea flavors or freshly brewed Starbucks coffee. The magazines are always current, and there are even iPods available, pre-loaded with an assortment of music for every taste. The dental chairs, meanwhile, have built-in massagers.

Dr. Mattingly considers himself a man of integrity who strives to be honest and forthright with his patients at all times. He offers them his best professional opinion, informed by his years of schooling and experience, but ultimately respects their right to choose a course of treatment for themselves.

Industry Info

Trust your dentist, but be your own health advocate. When you visit a dentist, your first mission is to ask questions, says Walnut Creek-based dentist Dr. James R. Mattingly DDS. If you feel your dentist is not thoroughly explaining your diagnosis, it might be time to find a new one. “As a patient, you should feel empowered to make informed decisions about your treatment,” he says.

The best dentists have advanced equipment that lets them photograph the inside of a patient’s mouth and share the image during the appointment. For cosmetic procedures, ask to see before and after photos of work the dentist has personally done. Ask whether the dentist does these procedures on a regular basis. If you’re concerned, you can even request the names of prior patients who might be willing to serve as references. Ask them how things went, whether they were satisfied with the outcome, and whether the procedure was painful.

Needless to say, Dr. Mattingly recommends everyone see a dentist regularly for routine cleanings and examinations. “It’s never too late,” he says. “Don’t ignore real or suspected problems, even if you’re not currently in pain. The longer you wait, the worse things could get.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you accept financing?

A: It depends on many factors, especially the nature of the treatment needed.

Q: Are you open Saturdays?

A: We are, and patients love it. They don’t have to take time off work.

Q: Do you do dental implants?

A: Yes. We have been restoring missing teeth with dental implants for 13 years and each year we do more and more. Our success rates are around 97% and the process is practically painless. Patients always assume that there is a lot of pain associated with the process, but in fact there is very little discomfort. We use dental implants to replace a single missing tooth, as well as multiple missing teeth Patients with existing full dentures often have problems with retention and stability. With a couple strategically placed dental implants we can add significant retention and stability to a full denture making life exponentially improved for the patient. When patients with uncomfortable dentures come in, I put a couple of dental implants in their mouth and they feel like they’re 17 again. These procedures are also very painless. A lot of people are fearful of the pain, and they’re always shocked at how easy the procedure is.

Q: Can you help me interpret my dental insurance?

A: We will do our best to help explain the benefits of your particular plan. There are literally hundreds of plans out there and each is slightly different. While it is our goal to assist in this area, we always encourage each patient to know there own plan.

Dr. James R. Mattingly, DDS: Destined for Dentistry

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

WALNUT CREEK — Many people don’t discover their professional proclivities until later in life, but Dr. James R. Mattingly, DDS seemed predisposed for dental work from a young age. “Unlike a lot of kids who grew up with a fear of being in the dentist’s chair, going to the dentist was always a positive experience for me,” he remembers. “Later, during my undergrad years at UC Davis, I was debating whether to go into medicine or dentistry. It wasn’t until I did some volunteer work in the dental field that I decided it was the path I wanted to take.”

Dr. Mattingly graduated from dental school in 1997 with high honors in the top 10% of his class and immediately began working in Walnut Creek, CA. Today, after nearly two decades in the field, he says his favorite part of his job is the opportunity to impact his patients’ lives. “I get a lot of satisfaction from helping my patients, whether it’s curing them of their fears or improving their smiles. A restored smile can really change a person’s outlook on their day-to-day life, so that’s a pretty remarkable thing.”

A lifetime resident of Northern California, Dr. Mattingly lives in Walnut Creek with his wife, Tracy, and their children, Grace and J.J. When asked his favorite part about living and working in the Bay Area, he cites the region’s vast diversity. “In the Bay Area, you get to meet people from all over the world, and they all have different cultures, backgrounds, and careers,” he says. “It really keeps my job fresh and exciting because I never know who I’m going to meet next and what stories they’ll share.”

Outside of work, Dr. Mattingly spends most of his time hanging out with his family and pursuing outdoor activities. “Whether it’s winter or summer, I love being outdoors,” he affirms. “Some of my favorite pastimes include hiking, skiing, dirt and mountain biking, and playing tennis and golf.” In addition to these active pursuits, Dr. Mattingly appreciates the opportunity to settle in with a good book. “I love to read when I have some quiet downtime.”

As a dental professional, Dr. Mattingly espouses the importance of empowering his patients. “I’m not here to twist anyone’s arm or lecture them,” he says. “Rather, I provide my patients with good information, keep the lines of communication open and let them decide what’s best for their situations. I always give them my recommendations, but I think it’s important for patients to feel confident about the decisions they’re making.”

When asked what his future retirement might look like, Dr. Mattingly says he’ll continue to stay involved in the field even after retiring from full-time practice. “I’d still want to keep a hand in dentistry, and I’d love to do it on a purely volunteer basis. It would be a great way to give back to the community, so that’s something I look forward to.”

A: I played basketball, tennis and soccer.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?
A: Montecatini Ristorante in Walnut Creek.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: Definitely an early bird. I thoroughly enjoy getting up when things are still quiet and calm, having a cup of coffee, and going for a morning walk.

  • Detecting Cavities with Dental Laser Technology

WALNUT CREEK — Traditionally, dentists have employed two different methods to detect cavities: x-rays and directly examining teeth with a handheld instrument. While these continue to be valuable techniques, a more recent innovation benefits patients by identifying cavities in their earliest stages: dental lasers.

How does a dental laser work? When a dentist shines the laser on the chewing surfaces of a patient’s teeth (where the vast majority of cavities are found), it measures the reflected light energy, or “fluorescence,” of the tooth structures’ various layers. While a healthy tooth will exhibit little to no fluorescence, any decayed areas will register a noticeable reading on the laser’s sensor.

One of the biggest attributes of dental lasers is they can detect cavities when they’re still very small, even before they can be identified visually. Because the lasers are also extremely accurate, this technology gives patients the opportunity to have cavities treated proactively rather than after they’ve grown and caused significant damage.

WALNUT CREEK — Host, Sarah Rutan: While x-rays are valuable tools for identifying cavities, many dentists are turning to a technological innovation that allows for earlier detection. Today we’re in Walnut Creek with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Dr. James Mattingly to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. James R. Mattingly, DDS: Hi. Today, we’re going to be talking about dental lasers. I know that dentistry is a terribly exciting subject for all of you viewers, and I know I get excited about things like this. So, we’re going to talk a little bit today about this device that is a laser that helps detect tooth decay.

Traditionally, we as dentist always have to refer to either an x-ray, or we have to get our sharp little instruments and push on your teeth. And, if we get a stick then we know we have a cavity. Now, these are still, of course, very valuable tools for detecting tooth decay. But, what’s so neat about the lasers here – like this one – is it will detect the cavity when it’s very, very small. Even before I can usually stick into the cavity, the laser will detect it.

And, this laser uses what we call light fluorescents. And so, it’s very simple for the patient and the dentist. All we’re doing is calibrating the unit, and then shining the laser light on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. What we find is that eighty percent of all cavities are detected on the chewing surfaces of the tooth. And so, that’s where we’re shining the light.

And, we have a certain range of numbers. So, when we shine the light, if the number – corresponding number – falls within a certain range, we know the tooth is healthy. And, if it falls within a higher range, we know there’s a cavity. So, very simple, non-biased, and highly accurate.

I have done hundreds, if not thousands of cavities – have been diagnosed with this unit in my office. And honestly, every single one of those cavities – when we’ve gone to fill it – it’s always presented as an actual true cavity, once I started drilling it out.

So, I have one hundred percent confidence in this unit, and that’s a wonderful piece of technology to help make dentistry easier for the patient, which is the bottom line. So, thanks so much, and next time we’ll have another great tip in the wonderful wide world of dentistry.
