Derek Dwight: Exterminator Extraordinaire

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA CLARA — Thanks in part to a paternal connection, Derek Dwight got an early start in the pest control industry. “My dad was involved in pest control, so I grew up around it,” he explains. “As a young man, I didn’t see the value of pest control initially—I was targeting something a bit more…glamorous, let’s say. But I eventually came to see the value of a career in that industry and got more involved. When I was 19, I got my pest control license, and in 2007 I started my own business.”

Today, as owner of Coastal Termite & Pest Control, Inc., Derek says his favorite part of his job is the company camaraderie. “I love working with my staff—everyone is fantastic and we all get along famously. The morale is great and we do a great job for the community, so there’s a strong sense of accomplishment as well.”

A resident of South San Jose, Derek spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy being active outdoors, especially in the water. I like surfing, scuba diving and fishing, along with hiking and skateboarding.” Derek also enjoys spending time with his friends, his two children and his fiancée.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Derek espouses the value of proactive communication. “We pride ourselves on our communication with customers,” he affirms. “For example, when a customer calls, we connect them with a live operator who learns about their needs and helps them schedule the right services. By talking to our clients and listening closely to their needs, we can ensure they get exactly what they want.”

When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Derek says he’d see the world. “I would probably book a flight to the Maldives. I love traveling, so I definitely want to spend my retirement traveling with my wife and experiencing new places, cultures, and activities.”
