Customer service is so important to A-1 Guaranteed Heating and Air, Inc., says vice president Krissy Hiteshew, that most of its business comes from referrals. The family-run HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) contractor operates under the golden role of customer service: Treat people as you’d like to be treated. The company believes in doing “whatever we can to make customers happy,” says Mrs. Hiteshew.

Mrs. Hiteshew estimates that A-1 Guaranteed Heating and Air has the highest percentage of NATE (North American Technician Excellence)-certified technicians of any South Bay HVAC company. That’s important, she says, since NATE is the number one testing program for the HVAC industry and requires its technicians to undergo continuous training to keep their certifications in good standing. With HVAC services, poor quality work isn’t just a nuisance—it’s potentially dangerous. There are many reasons to hire licensed HVAC technicians to install or repair your heating or air conditioning systems. You’ll get better-quality work that lasts longer and, most likely, saves you money on energy bills. However, it’s important to also remember that a poorly installed or maintained unit is actually a safety hazard. Air conditioning units contain harmful chemicals, such as Freon, that require special training to properly handle.

“HVAC is about more than just putting a unit in someone’s house,” says Krissy Hiteshew, co-owner of A-1 Guaranteed Heating and Air, Inc. “It also has to do with the quality of incoming air, which can affect people who have asthma or lung problems. There are many variables.”

Your HVAC contractor should also conduct duct pressure testing, now required by California law, to check for leaks. Not only do leaky ducts drain efficiency from HVAC systems, they can also carry contaminated air into your home.

There are safety control designs built into every HVAC system that reduce the risk of personal injury and fires. These protective devices vary slightly from one unit to another, depending on whether the air conditioner or furnace is gas or electric. Take the following steps to make sure your system performs safely and efficiently.

Regularly clean the air filters in your furnace and air conditioning systems. If the filters get clogged with dirt, dust or debris, it restricts air flow throughout the system. This can lead to motor strain and overheating, which pose a fire hazard.

Check your thermostat to make sure it’s set properly. Make sure the reading is set on “Heat” and at the proper temperature. When the air conditioner is running, make sure the “Cool” setting is at an appropriate temperature to avoid constant operation.

Purchase a simple volt meter at your local hardware or home improvement store. Use it to check your circuit breaker to see how many volts of electricity are going to your HVAC unit. The circuit breaker is one of the most important safety controls on your system. If a power surge of more than 240 volts occurs, the circuit breaker should trip, shutting off the unit.

Secure the wiring. The low-voltage wires on your HVAC system are part of the safety controls. Check all electrical connections and make sure they’re tight.

Q: Will you save me money over the long term?

A: If you own any HVAC product that’s at least 10 years old, it’s not running as efficiently as it could. A newer, more efficient unit could definitely save you money. For example, if your current unit is operating at lower than 10.00 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), your average annual cooling bill will be about $800. If you were to upgrade to a 19.5 SEER system, it could potentially cost you $410—an annual savings of 49 percent.

Q: Can you help with allergy control?

A: A lot of new furnaces and air conditioners have filters that actually clean the air and can help prevent an allergy or asthma flare-up in the home.

Q: Are your estimates free?

A: Yes.

Q: What about maintenance? Is that really important?

A: We recommend that people maintain their unit just like they would a car. We can come in and do full maintenance—we’ll clean the coil, vacuum everything out and lubricate all the moving parts. We have maintenance programs available, and we handle all the scheduling so you don’t have to worry about it.

Q: Will regular maintenance extend the life of a HVAC unit?

A: Yes, and it’ll also keep it running more efficiently, which means a lower PG&E bill.

Richard Hiteshew: Family First

VALLEJO — When asked what motivated him to start his own HVAC business, Richard Hiteshew says he just wanted to have more time with his family. “After several years working as a technician, I was fed up with my job encroaching on my family life. The final straw was when I had to work on my daughter’s fifth birthday, even though I requested the day off weeks in advance. I came home to my wife, Krissy, and told her I was going to start my own company. She said it was a great idea. Considering that we had a house payment, two kids and a third on the way, it was a pretty risky decision. Looking back, it was the best decision we’ve ever made.”

Since founding A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air, Inc. in 1996, Richard says family continues to be an integral aspect of his career. “In addition to Krissy and myself, three of our four kids work here. Our oldest daughter, Kasey, is the office manager; our son, Nick, is an engineer; and our youngest son, Austin, is just getting into installation. Plus, my older brother and nephew work here.” Additionally, Richard makes a point of extending the family dynamic to his entire staff. “We’re very family-oriented here,” he affirms. “It’s practically a requirement for our employees to go with their kids on the first day of school.”

A resident of Fairfield, Richard spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I love outdoor activities like camping, hunting, fishing, boating and four-wheeling,” he details. “I also like going to car shows and showing off my ’55 Chevy. I got it from my brother when I was 16 and I still have it!”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Richard espouses the importance of honesty. “I always try to be honest, whether I’m dealing with an employee or a customer,” he explains. “If a customer is unhappy about something, I would sooner give them their money back than leave them feeling like they’ve been taken advantage of. As far as I’m concerned, reputation is everything, and I want everyone to think of A-1 Guaranteed Heating & Air as a company they can trust.”

When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Richard says he’d spend more time doing the things he enjoys most. “I would stay busy with car shows and outdoor activities. I’d also get more involved in charity work. Krissy and I are very passionate about giving back to our community. Take our company’s A-1 Give Back program: if a customer mentions a nonprofit to us, we’ll donate five percent of their bill up to $100. It’s very rewarding to be able to make a positive impact on our community.”
