Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for tree care companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Absolute Best Care, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: utilize its decades of industry experience to provide them with exactly what they want. “Knowledge and experience are very important in this industry, and both of ours are strong,” says owner Michael Petrovich. “We have what it takes to bring our customers’ ideas to life.”

Absolute Best Care has been providing tree services for residential and commercial clients in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara Counties since 2003. The company has the training and equipment to handle everything from planting new trees to pruning and removing existing trees, and it’s also qualified to install pavers, retaining walls, and other landscape-improving products.

Unlike less experienced tree care companies that do whatever their clients request without paying attention to what’s best for their trees, Absolute Best Care closely follows the standards of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and takes the time to explain why those standards exist. “Sometimes people will want us to cut a tree in half or cut it back so it looks like a bush, but the ISA stresses a 25 percent reduction for good pruning, so that’s what we abide by,” explains Mr. Petrovich. “Some contractors might do that type of work to make a quick buck, but we care about the long-term health and appearance of our clients’ trees, so we always work on them with that in mind.”

Ultimately, Mr. Petrovich sees Absolute Best Care’s company-wide character as its most important attribute. “For example, we never ask our clients about bids they’ve received from other companies,” he says. “We’re interested in fulfilling their tree care needs, not beating another company’s price. We also don’t engage in hard-sell tactics. Of course, we always want a potential customer’s business, but we want to earn it the right way, and that means never trying to sell them something they don’t need.”

Industry Info

When it comes to hiring a tree care company, look for one that adheres to industry-best practices for trimming, pruning and maintenance.

When tree care contractors and arborists agree to whatever their customers want, it can be detrimental to the health of the trees and cause serious long-term problems. “Sometimes people will want to cut a 60-foot tree in half, but that’s definitely not good for the tree,” says Michael Petrovich, owner of Absolute Best Care in Concord. “Industry standards exist for a reason, especially when it comes to pruning and maintenance.”

Regardless of what tree contractors are asked to do, Mr. Petrovich says they should care more about the long-term health and appearance of trees than the immediate demands of property owners. “Your contractor should prune your tree so it grows correctly and looks great for many years.”

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has numerous standards that tree care professionals follow in order to best care for trees. Here are a few:

  • Branches should only be removed for a reason (dead branches, to improve the form of the tree, to reduce risk from falling branches, etc.).
  • Young trees should be pruned while they mature so they grow with good structure.
  • Mature trees should only be pruned as a corrective or preventive measure.
  • Weak, dead and diseased tree limbs can be removed at any time. Healthy branches should be pruned before spring growth.
  • Tree topping is harmful and should be avoided. Safer trimming techniques such as pruning back small branches and limbs can preserve a tree. Otherwise, removing the tree and replacing it with a smaller species may be the best solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to complete my job?
A: It depends on the services you need, but we can give you a bid when we come to your property and do the estimate. Regardless of what you need, we’ll do everything we can to get you the best possible price.

Q: Can you plant drought-tolerant trees?
A: Most of the trees we plant are drought-tolerant, which is important to a lot of people because the Bay Area is prone to facing drought and low-water situations. Once we determine what you want, we’ll explain your options.

Q: Do you use harsh pesticides and weed killers?
A: We don’t use Roundup or other pesticides and herbicides in our customers’ yards. The only place where we might use a harsh weed killer is a natural road where weeds are coming up through the asphalt.

Q: As a property owner, what do I need to know about the tree care industry?
A: Sudden Oak Death isn’t the only thing that can impact your trees—you also need to be wary of borers, beetles and other diseases. We know how to effectively deal with these types of problems so they don’t spread.

Q: How often should I have my trees inspected?
A: We recommend having your trees inspected at least every other year, depending on your property and landscaping. If you have a lot of trees on your property (especially fruit trees), you should get them checked regularly for blight, fungus, beetles and other issues.

Mike Petrovich: Tree Service Roots

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CONCORD — When asked to recount the origin of his tree service career, Mike Petrovich says it’s rooted in family. “My dad had a tree service and landscaping business, so I grew up learning the trade from him and my uncles. After high school, I decided to continue on that professional path. I worked for a handful of companies before starting my own business, Mike’s Tree Service. In 2003, I started my current business, Absolute Best Care. In addition to my 40-plus years of experience, both of my sons have been involved with the company, so it has been neat to pass my knowledge to the next generation.”

Mike says his favorite part of tree work is helping customers in their hour of need. “It’s nice to be the hero. When you get a call from a property owner who’s in a stressful situation, it’s very rewarding to ‘save the day’ and take care of things for them.”

A resident of Contra Costa County (where he lives with his partner, Diana), Mike spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “My favorite hobby is fishing,” he details. “I usually go to areas like Coyote Creek or the San Pablo Reservoir. There’s someone about being on the water and the peace and quiet of nature…I’m a very energetic person, so being in that environment gives me a chance to recharge my batteries.” Mike also enjoys bowling and volunteering his time to coach youth sports. “I used to coach a lot of tournament baseball, and I’ve being doing that on and off for the past 17 years.”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Mike espouses the importance of clear communication. “When you’re servicing trees, you often have to explain things to your customers—what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and so on. But if you can’t explain it in a way they can understand, they aren’t going to be satisfied. That’s why being a good communicator is an important part of running a business. Of course, it’s also important to be a good listener. That way, you can be sure everyone is on the same page in regard to expectations.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Greece, because of my Greek heritage.

Q: Music or talk radio?

A: Music. I love it. I’m actually a jazz trumpet player, as are both of my sons.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: Anything chocolate.

Q: What were you most known for in high school?

A: Sports and music. I was in the school jazz band and played on the baseball team.

  • A Common Symptom of Over-Watering

CONCORD — If you notice little black dots or other instances of discoloration on your plants, you may assume they need more water, but this isn’t always the case. In fact, these symptoms are often a sign of over-watering.

As the weather gets warmer in summer, property owners have a tendency to overcompensate for the heat by giving their plants extra water. However, this can actually have a detrimental effect—since the plants are used to a certain type of watering, when their water intake suddenly jumps, it can put them in a state of stress. For this reason, it’s important to exercise caution when making adjustments to your plants’ irrigation regimen.

The challenge is figuring out how much water your plants actually need. One way to determine this is to cut back on irrigation and see how your plants respond. If they start to look wilted, slightly increase the amount of water and continue to do so until they look healthy. This will help you establish a proper watering schedule.

Of course, over-watering isn’t the only factor that can cause stress in plants—it can also be caused by nutrient-deficient soil or root damage from subterranean rodents. If you suspect the former, take a soil sample to your local parks department or nursery and have it tested for nutrient content and pH balance; if something is off, ask for a recommendation on how to remedy the issue. To prevent rodent damage, install some wire mesh in the soil around your plants’ roots.

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to yard irrigation, one mistake that’s easy to make is unintentionally over-watering. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Michael Petrovich of Absolute Best Care to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Michael Petrovich: Just a word of information for you. This time of year the way the weather’s change, we get a lot of water and sometimes we get very little water. When your plant – when you’re noticing your plants and if you see, like, little black dots or little black discoloration, that’s sometimes a sign of overwater. So be careful when you’re watering your plants, especially as the times now are getting warmer in the year to maybe cut back on your water and check the leaves, check the foliage, and feel the – feel them. And if you’ll notice that it’s got a like a little black little dot on it and my – and might have a little discoloration, might be yellowing a bit, you might think, oh, the sun’s burning it. It’s too dry. I need to give it more water. That might not be the case. It’s probably over water.
