Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation uses high-quality, American-made parts on every door, which Mr. Salem says goes a long way toward ensuring quality and longevity. “A lot of companies use oil-tempered or galvanized springs, which tend to wear out after years of use and exposure to weather, but our springs are designed to last. It’s a small choice, but it makes a big difference.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for garage door companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: provide every client with fast service and high-quality work at a reasonable price. “Our customers are the reason we’re here, so we always make sure they’re happy with every aspect of our work,” affirms owner Muhammad Salem. “We’re committed to helping them in any way we can, and they recognize and appreciate that.”

Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation has been providing garage door services for residential clients in San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Marin and Sacramento Counties since 2009. The company installs and repairs all types of wood, steel, and aluminum garage doors, and it also sells decorative hardware and accessories so its customers can enhance the appearances of their doors.

Unlike garage door companies that hire inexperienced technicians and use outdated equipment in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation maintains a staff of highly skilled industry professionals and uses the best replacement parts available on the market. “Our commitment to quality allows us to offer lengthy warranties on all our work,” adds Mr. Salem. “Our replacement parts are guaranteed for five years, and our labor is guaranteed for one year.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation is its 24/7 availability, which Mr. Salem says is important for maintaining a loyal clientele base. “We work around the clock, and there aren’t many garage door companies that can say that. We also provide same-day service for customers who need immediate help, and we offer two- and four-hour windows so they don’t have to wait around all day.”

Industry Info

Take simple steps to get years of service from your garage door and its opener. It’s said that a little prevention is worth a lot of repair, and that’s especially true when it comes to garage doors and their opening systems. Garage doors and automatic openers aren’t cheap, but they should last a long time with good maintenance and a little extra care.

The first thing to do is choose the right garage door for your home. “If you’re living in an area with a lot of moisture, I recommend an aluminum door,” says Muhammed Salem, owner of Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation in Santa Clara. “They’re rust-proof and light, and many manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on parts. They’re a little more expensive than other types of garage doors, but they’re worth it in the long run. Wood doors are beautiful, but they can soak up water, warp, crack, and become rusty and damaged over time.”

Once you’ve chosen a quality door and had it professionally installed, remember to have it serviced regularly (usually once a year) to keep it functioning correctly and safely. That means having a garage door professional balance the door, service the opener motor, tighten the springs, and lube and oil the door and chain. “You can use silicon spray on the moving parts in between visits from a professional,” adds Mr. Salem. “Do it once every six months or whenever you notice squeaking or grinding noises.”

If you’re planning to work on your garage door yourself, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Garage doors can be dangerous, so let your family know when you’re working on yours so they don’t accidentally open or close it. Unplug the garage door opener, and never attempt to tighten, loosen, replace or repair springs yourself. Regularly inspect your springs, cables, rollers, pulley and other hardware for signs of wear or damage. If something looks loose or worn, call a professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why won’t my garage door open?

A: That’s difficult to say without seeing the door—it could be a spring, a damaged tier, something related to the motor or a problem with the door itself. Once we come to your house and look at the door, we’ll be able to determine the problem and explain what we’ll do to fix it.

Q: Why won’t my garage door close?

A: It could be anything from the pressure sensors in the motors to the cables getting tangled in the tube, so the best course of action is to have us come inspect the door in person instead of trying to diagnose it over the phone.

Q: How fast can you come out to my home?

A: Our turnaround time is the same day you call. We can also come out on weekends.

Q: Do you provide an appointment window?

A: We usually provide a four-hour window, but if you need a two-hour window, we can do that as well. We’ll also call you 30 minutes before we arrive.

Q: What kind of garage door parts do you use?

A: We use American-made parts and buy locally from companies like Northwest Door and Clopay.

Q: Do you perform garage door maintenance?

A: Yes. We can add tension to the springs, oil and lube the door and chain, and perform other maintenance that helps your garage door and its opener last longer.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Malek Tamimi

Malek Tamimi: Doing the Math

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

SANTA CLARA — Like most college students, Malek Tamimi lacked the credentials or experience to land anything other than a run-of-the-mill job. Fortunately, thanks to a family connection, he was given an opportunity to improve his occupational status. “I was working in a liquor store when my cousin, who owned a garage door business, offered to train me so I could work for him,” he recounts. “I was hesitant at first, but as I started to get acquainted with the trade, I found that I really enjoyed it. In particular, I liked being able to drive all over the Bay Area and interact with different people, which was a refreshing change after being stuck behind a counter all day.”

In addition to being a technician for Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation, Malek is working toward a college degree in mathematics, with a long-term goal of becoming a teacher. Fittingly, when asked his favorite part of his job, he says it’s the opportunity to educate his customers about their garage door systems. “I’ve found that a more educated customer tends to be a more satisfied customer, which is why I make an effort to explain things in great detail. That way, our customers are able to make more informed choices and know what they’re paying for, which makes them feel confident about their transactions.”

Originally from Palestine, Malek moved to the United States at the age of 18 to attend school, and today resides in San Leandro. Having experienced life on both coasts, he expresses his appreciation for the Bay Area’s amiable atmosphere. “When I first came to the U.S., I lived in California for two years before moving to New Jersey, which I didn’t like at all. The weather was terrible and people tended to have a more aggressive temperament. When I moved back to the Bay Area, it felt like I was returning home.”

Outside of work, Malek says the bulk of his time goes to studying and doing homework, but he also enjoys hobbies like music and sports. “I’ve always liked listening to music, and I recently started making my own recordings just for fun. I also like playing soccer and hanging out with friends.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Malek says he would fully devote himself to his academic aspirations. “I would continue on the path I’m currently pursuing, which is to get my master’s degree in mathematics, start teaching and eventually get my PhD. It’s a long road to get to where I want to be, but it’s something I’m passionate about, so I’m committed to reaching my goals.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Palestine, just because it’s my home.

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: Scrambled.

  • Four Possible Causes of a Malfunctioning Garage Door

SANTA CLARA — If your garage door is malfunctioning, it’s likely due to one of four possible causes. The first two are issues you can fix yourself, whereas the second two require the assistance of a professional.

    1. Disengaged emergency release
Marked by a conspicuous red cord, the emergency release lets you disconnect your garage door from its motor and operate it manually, which can come in handy during a power outage or if the motor is malfunctioning. In some instances, however, the emergency release may disengage without you knowing it, leading you to think there’s a problem. To rule out this possibility, pull the emergency release cord and run the motor until it reconnects to the door, then try the door opener again.

    2. Misaligned safety sensors
Every garage door has a pair of safety sensors situated on either side of the doorway: one that transmits a signal and one that receives it. In order for this transmission to take place, these sensors need to be in alignment and the doorway must be clear of obstructions.

When properly aligned, the light on the transmitting sensor will be solid; if it’s blinking, there’s either a blockage or the alignment is out. Clear any objects that could be blocking the signal (even something as small as a spider web). If that doesn’t work, try readjusting the position of the sensors until they’re in alignment.

    3. Loose cables
In some instances, the garage door itself can become misaligned, which typically occurs when one of the cables goes off of the pulley or drum. You’ll need a professional to repair this problem.

    4. Broken spring
Every garage door system has a pair of torsion springs, which do most of the heavy lifting when opening the door. If one of these springs breaks, your door may cease to lift all the way up, and it may not open at all. Torsion springs are dangerous to work with, so be sure to call a professional to handle the replacement.

  • Video: Troubleshooting Garage Door Issues

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA CLARA — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your garage door isn’t functioning properly, there are a number of possible causes, some of which you can address yourself. Today we’re in Santa Clara with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Malek Tamimi of Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Malek Tamimi: If your garage door’s not working, I’m going to tell you some of the most common issues. Four issues, the first two you can fix yourself. First one: the emergency release could be disengaged. And the way to engage it, you pull the cord up. One it’s up, you run the motor until it connects to the door.

The second issue is your sensors. Now the second issue is your sensors. You have a sender and other side, is the receiver. Now once there’s something in the way of the sensors, the door won’t close because the motor thinks that there’s somebody in the way. Which is a safety issue. If there’s something in the way, move it. If there’s nothing in the way and the door still doesn’t shut, make sure the sensors are aligned with each other. If they are you’re fine.

The third issue is your door. Sometimes the door crashes and it crashes because one of the cables goes off the pulley or the drum. If that happens, you have to call a professional. Just like me. Somebody who you trust.

The last issue is a broken spring. [garage door closes] Now sometimes the springs break and the door doesn’t go all the way up. It goes two feet? Because the motor doesn’t have enough strength to pull the door up. If that happens you also have to call a professional. Just like me. Somebody who you can trust.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Ata Salem

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Ata Salem is senior technician at Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation, a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (888) 725-6139 or by email.

Ata Salem: On Track for Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

HAYWARD — Soon after trying his hand as a garage door technician, Ata Salem knew he was on the right track. “Before getting into garage door work, I was doing new construction work in Jerusalem,” he recounts. “Over there, all the buildings are made of concrete and steel, which are very difficult materials to work with. My brother had started a garage door service business in the U.S., so I decided to come check it out. I liked it right away—in particular, I appreciated the fact that it was a lot less physically demanding than construction. After apprenticing with my brother for five years, I got my garage door contractor’s license, and today I continue to work at Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation as senior technician.”

Ata says his favorite part of garage door work is the opportunity to solve problems. “I like coming up with solutions for challenging situations. For example, I recently had a customer whose door would only open partway due to a chimney that was obstructing the track. With a little ingenuity, I was able to design a vertical track that allowed for more clearance. That made the customer really happy, which was a very satisfying feeling for me.”

A resident of San Mateo (where he lives with his wife, Deana, and their daughter), Ata spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy sports like basketball and football, whether I’m watching them on TV or playing them with friends,” he details. “I’m also a big foodie, so I enjoy trying new restaurants.” Additionally, Ata likes spending time with his family. “I have a lot of relatives who live in the area—between my mom’s side and my dad’s side, it’s a pretty big community.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Ata espouses the importance of fulfilling expectations. “As a professional, you need to do what you say you’re going to do,” he affirms. “That’s the key to success, but it’s also where a lot of companies fail. It starts with setting realistic expectations—after all, the job has to be doable. Then you just follow through with those expectations. If you’re able to accomplish that, you’ll have happy customers.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ata says he’d head to the beach. “I love beaches. Whenever I go on vacation, it’s usually to somewhere like San Diego or Miami. If I were to retire, I’d probably plan an extended stay at a beachside resort.”

  • Does Your Garage Door Motor Have a Battery Backup?

HAYWARD — On July 1, 2019, California Senate Bill 969 went into effect, which requires all garage door motors sold or installed in the state to be equipped with a battery backup. A battery backup ensures that the garage door motor will still function in the event of a power outage. Without a battery backup, if the power went out and you needed to get your car out of your garage, the door wouldn’t open. For this reason, in an emergency situation like a fire or earthquake, a battery backup could mean the difference between life and death.

SB 969 doesn’t just apply to new motor installations—it also pertains to garage door replacement. So, even if you only plan to replace your garage door, if your door motor doesn’t have a battery backup, you’ll be required to replace or upgrade it as well. While some garage door motors are capable of having a battery backup integrated retroactively, this isn’t an option with most older models. So, when planning to replace your garage door, make sure you’re aware of this important compliance requirement.

    Complete Video Transcription

HAYWARD — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to replace your garage door or garage door motor, there’s a new legal requirement you should be aware of. Today we’re in Hayward with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ata Salem of Ace’s Garage Door Repair & Installation to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ata Salem: As of July 1st, 2019, Senate Bill 969 was passed, which demands that all new installations have a battery backup in the motor. Do not get a motor that does not have a battery backup as it will fail building inspection and the building code. It is provided through the health and safety code of California due to all the earthquakes and fires that happen here, unfortunately. It will save a life.
