Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for HVAC contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Air Care Heating & Cooling, Inc., the key to customer satisfaction is taking a conscientious approach to its work. “We don’t just go to a customer’s house and swap out their old HVAC system for a new one; we take our time and make sure everything is done correctly,” explains owner Joey Mangano. “Through careful installation and preventative maintenance, we help each client get the best long-term performance from their system.”

Air Care Heating & Cooling has been providing indoor air quality services for residential and commercial clients throughout Santa Clara County since 2014. The family-owned and operated company has the training and equipment to install, repair, and maintain all types of HVAC systems, and it offers 24/7 emergency service for its customers’ convenience.

Unlike HVAC companies that give ambiguous estimates in an effort to maximize their profit margins, Air Care Heating & Cooling emphasizes upfront and honest pricing on every job, regardless of its size. “There are no hidden costs with us,” affirms Mr. Mangano. “We always present our customers with thorough, detailed estimates before their jobs begin, which means they know exactly how much they’re going to pay the entire time.”

Another distinguishing feature of Air Care Heating & Cooling is its unique “Care Club” membership program, which is designed to ensure its customers’ HVAC systems are running at peak efficiency. “Care Club members receive several perks, including priority service, discounts on repairs and products, and two free precision system tune-ups,” says Mr. Mangano. “It’s a great value because it helps our customers get the most life out of their HVAC systems.”

Industry Info

If you need to replace your HVAC system, make sure you address all pertinent aspects of installation.
“A lot of homeowners think that if they replace their old furnaces with high-efficiency models, it’s going to help them save a lot of money on utilities, but it’s not always that simple,” says Joey Mangano, owner of Air Care Heating & Cooling, Inc. in San Jose. “A lot goes into how manufacturers determine the efficiency of their systems, including factors outside of the equipment itself. So, if you’re installing a new HVAC system, it’s important to assess your home’s conditions and address any deficiencies. For example, a home’s ductwork often needs to be upgraded to accommodate the new system’s specifications. If you install a high-efficiency furnace but leave your 40-year-old ductwork intact, you won’t get anywhere near the level of efficiency the system is capable of.”

Due to the many factors involved in proper HVAC system installation, Mr. Mangano recommends working with a company that takes a holistic approach to the job. “Before installing a new system, a good technician will make sure the home’s conditions are adequate and recommend any adjustments that need to happen,” he says. “After all, it doesn’t make sense for a homeowner to spend money on a new HVAC system and not get the proper efficiency out of it. By addressing the big picture and doing a full design, a skilled installer will be able to achieve maximum performance for your system.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does my HVAC system need ongoing maintenance?

A: Annual maintenance is vital to keep your system running at peak performance. It’s just like changing your car’s oil: if you neglect it, it’s going to stop running efficiently and eventually fail.

Q: When can you schedule me for a system installation?

A: It depends on the time of year. A lot of people wait until their HVAC systems unexpectedly fail, which often happens during our busiest seasons (summer and winter). If you’re a member of our Care Club, we’ll be able to schedule you fairly quickly, but if not, you may end up on a waiting list. In any case, we recommend preemptively scheduling your system replacement during the spring or fall, which is when we tend to have the most availability.

Q: How long will it take to install my new system?

A: Every house is different, which means every installation is basically a custom job, so it depends on the specifics of your situation. In general, we try to complete installations within a couple of days.

Q: Can you measure my home’s indoor air quality?

A: Yes. We have a special tool that’s designed to assess the quality of your home’s air based on five parameters: temperature, humidity, airborne particulates, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Once we get a reading, we can recommend specific products or services to address any deficiencies.

Q: Can I qualify for any rebates or financing options by installing a more efficient HVAC system?

A: G&E offers various rebates, although they tend to come and go. The Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program enables homeowners to roll the cost of their systems into their homes’ property taxes, which makes installation much more affordable.

Joey Mangano: A Refreshing Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — After starting out in general construction, Joey Mangano eventually found himself in a more refreshing career. “I started working in construction right after high school,” he says. “At one point, we were remodeling a house for a guy who had obviously been successful, and I asked him what he did for a living. He said he owned an HVAC company. That kind of inspired me, so I went to a community college, took some classes and got certified in the trade. After gaining a few years’ experience, I started my own company.”

Today, as owner of Air Care Heating & Cooling, Inc., Joey says his favorite part of his job is system design. “Rather than just swapping out HVAC units, I like taking the time to properly design systems. A lot goes into HVAC equipment nowadays, and it takes a careful design to achieve optimum energy efficiency, comfort, and air quality.”

A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Victoria, and their three children), Joey expresses his appreciation for the region’s pervasive diversity. “This area is diverse on multiple levels, from the people who live here to the landscape and architecture. Overall, it just makes for a richer quality of life.”

Outside of work, Joey can usually be found spending time with his family. “Work takes up most of my time, so when I’m off, I like to be with my wife and kids. I also play softball and enjoy going camping and hiking. One of these days I’d like to do some traveling, but with work being as busy as it is, I’m not quite there yet.”

In regard to his professional career, Joey believes in doing things the right way or not at all. “For me, it’s all about taking care of our clients and doing the job correctly,” he affirms. “That means installing equipment properly per manufacturer specifications, not just slapping it in there. A lot of contractors just swap units in and out rather than taking the extra step and designing the system to perform efficiently. We always take that extra step, which our customers really appreciate.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Joey says he’d do some traveling. “I’d like to see other parts of the world, like Europe. I also think it would be cool to do some volunteer work, like going to impoverished countries and building houses.”

  • The Value of Regular HVAC System Maintenance

SAN JOSE — One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of home maintenance is having annual HVAC system inspection and service appointments. Every manufacturer recommends annual maintenance to make sure the equipment is clean, safe to use and running at peak performance. During the appointment, an HVAC technician will perform a 22-point inspection of the furnace and air conditioning systems. Some of the critical points include:

    Furnace heat exchanger
If this component is compromised, it can cause small carbon monoxide leaks—so small that they won’t even trigger a carbon monoxide detector. While these leaks may be miniscule, they still pose a health risk, so it’s important to have the heat exchanger inspected on a regular basis.

    Air conditioning
The technician will clean the coils and make sure the unit has a proper refrigerant charge.

    Ductwork
The technician will use diagnostic equipment to make sure the ductwork is facilitating proper air flow throughout the house.

These are just a few of the many components an HVAC technician will check during the service appointment. Overall, annual maintenance will help improve system efficiency, increase its lifespan and prevent potentially dangerous conditions.
