I brought my husband in to him, because he did a really good job on my filling. He does really good work, in terms of restoration skills.

I like how he takes the time to take pictures of my tooth, while he was doing my filling, and he showed me where my cavity was. He was very informative.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining patient satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any health care professional, but it’s even more important for dentists who have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Alfred B. dela Cruz, DDS, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of patient satisfaction is taking the time to educate his patients about their dental conditions and clearly explain how they can improve their oral health. “A lot of people don’t even know they have a problem until they actually see it, so I always take a lot of ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos so I can show them exactly what’s wrong,” says Dr. dela Cruz. “My number one goal is to create positive dental experiences for my patients, and they really appreciate that.”

Dr. dela Cruz has been providing general dental services for patients of all ages at his San Ramon practice since 2003, handling everything from composite fillings, extractions and dentures to root canals, whitening and cosmetic work. He also works with veneers, inlays and onlays (a conservative alternative to crowns), and he uses carefully tailored anesthesia to offer painless oral surgery.

Unlike dentists who sacrifice personalized service in order to maximize their patient volume, Dr. dela Cruz and his employees believe in providing a personal touch for every patient, regardless of the extent of their issues. “I only see one patient at a time, which translates to about 10 a day, so each person receives very focused, personalized care,” says Dr. dela Cruz. “When someone comes into our office, they know it’s going to be all about them.”

Another distinguishing feature of Dr. dela Cruz’s practice is its ability to utilize a wide variety of state-of-the-art dental equipment, from digital x-rays that reduce radiation exposure by 85 percent to lasers used for periodontal and soft tissue work that reduce pain, swelling and the risk of infection. “Also, our hand pieces don’t make the unpleasant screeching noises that older dental equipment makes,” adds Dr. dela Cruz. “It may seem insignificant, but eliminating those sounds really puts patients at ease and makes for a better overall experience.”

Industry Info

If you need a dental crown, consider the benefits of “all-ceramic.” According to San Ramon-based dentist Alfred B. dela Cruz, DDS, one of the most significant advancements in dental technology in recent years has been the use of ceramic crowns. “Some dentists are exclusively using all-ceramic crowns, which means there’s no metal underneath to create that unsightly black line where the crown meets the gum,” he explains. “The main benefit to these crowns is they can be made in one day, which speeds up the process and eliminates the need for multiple fitting visits.”
To make an all-ceramic crown, a dentist uses cameras to create a 3-D model of the original tooth, mills a replacement crown on the spot and has it ready to be cemented in place in 30 minutes. Relatively few dental practices have the equipment to perform this procedure right now, but Dr. dela Cruz says dentists who stay up-to-date on advancements in industry technology will have a distinct competitive edge when state-of-the-art equipment becomes more readily available.
A crowned tooth doesn’t require any special care, but it’s important to remember that the tooth underneath the crown is still susceptible to decay and gum disease just like your other teeth. Following good oral hygiene practices (brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day around the crown area where the gum meets the tooth) will greatly reduce the risk of complications and increase the life span of the crown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will my dental work cost?

A: Once we decide on a treatment plan, we’ll lay out the specific costs and provide you with various payment options. We offer structured payment plans through CareCredit, which is designed for medical and dental treatments. You can also pay the entirety of your bill upfront and receive a discount.

Q: Will I be in pain while you’re working on my teeth?

A: No. We use ‘profound anesthesia,’ which means you won’t feel a thing. Often, our patients don’t even realize their procedures are over until we tell them.

Q: Are you skilled in cosmetic dentistry?

A: Yes, one of our specialties is cosmetic dentistry. Our goal is to ensure our work functions properly and looks great at the same time. For example, we don’t use any metal in our crowns, which means you won’t see that black line along the gum line like you see in older dental work.

Q: Do you treat children?

A: Yes. Our practice is adult-oriented, but we offer pediatric dentistry services as well.

Q: Do you accept dental insurance?

A: Yes, we accept a number of dental insurances, including Delta Dental, Metlife, United Concordia, Aetna and Cigna, just to name a few. We’ll be happy to go over benefits with you to determine how much your insurance policy will pay on a given procedure, but the ultimate responsibility is yours.

Dr. Alfred dela Cruz: Helping Hands

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAMON — When asked how he came to be a dentist, Dr. Alfred dela Cruz cites the influence of a family member. “My uncle was a dentist, and he helped me and my sisters with dental work and braces,” he remembers. “I thought it was neat how he was able to help people through his work. Plus, I really liked working with my hands and building things like model cars and airplanes, so it just seemed like a good career for me to pursue.”

After he graduated dental school, Dr. dela Cruz began practicing professionally in 2000. Fourteen years later, he says his favorite part of his job is providing a comfortable experience for patients with anxiety. “Often, I’ll get patients that have a fear of being in the dentist’s chair, whether due to bad past experiences or other reasons. In most cases, after I’ve worked on their teeth, they’re amazed at how comfortable it was. I find it very satisfying to give people a new perspective of how easy and pain-free dental work can be.”

Originally from the Philippines, Alfred came to the United States at the age of four, where he spent his childhood living in and around San Francisco before eventually settling in Castro Valley. Overall, he regards the Bay Area as an ideal location for a dental professional. “I think most people here have a proper concern about the health and appearance of their teeth, and they’re willing to invest in aesthetic improvements, which makes my job all the more enjoyable.”

Outside of work, most of Dr. dela Cruz’s time is devoted to his family, which consists of his wife, Leslie, and their three sons. “Raising three young boys, we have our hands full to say the least, so we try to keep them as active as possible,” he says. “A couple of weeks ago, for instance, we took them to Muir Woods to see the giant redwoods and sequoias, which was a lot of fun.” When he gets some time to himself, Alfred likes to exercise his love of hands-on work by performing automotive maintenance. “I maintain my own cars, including my 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, which I’m currently restoring.”

In his life and career, Dr. dela Cruz espouses the importance of honesty. “I think being honest is at the core of my professional philosophy,” he affirms. “I always make sure to tell my patients what their options are—even if they request a more expensive treatment upfront, I’ll let them know if there’s a cheaper alternative. While I may end up making less of a profit, that fact that I’m able to sleep peacefully at night is priceless.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Dr. dela Cruz says he’d take a trip to a tropical locale. “I’d probably go to the Caribbean and soak up some sunshine.” However, he says he’d also invest some time toward charity work. “For the last couple of years, I’ve been going to the Philippines on dental missions and providing free dental work for those who can’t afford it. That’s something I’d definitely like to do more of in retirement.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you have a favorite sports team?
A: I’m a diehard fan of the San Francisco 49ers, the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors.

Q: What was your first car?
A: Actually, it was the ’63 Karmann Ghia that I’m restoring right now.

Q: What’s your favorite type of food?
A: Italian.

Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: “A Few Good Men.”

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Autographed baseballs. I have one signed by Willie Mays, but my favorite is the one signed by Buster Posey.

  • Solutions for Sore Gums

SAN RAMON — If you suffer from sore or bleeding gums, you may just need to implement a couple of oral hygiene measures, the most important of which is flossing. If you aren’t flossing every day, you’re missing out on a crucial part of your oral hygiene routine—in fact, it’s probably the main reason your gums are bleeding. Keep in mind that when you first start flossing, it’s going to cause your gums to bleed even more. However, with time, regular flossing will correct this issue, resulting in healthier gums.

As an alternative to flossing, some people prefer to use a water flosser (such as a Waterpik®), which employs the power of pressurized water to clean between the teeth. The targeted, pressurized stream of water is less abrasive than floss and does a great job of breaking up plaque, film, and food particles in between the teeth.

In addition to flossing, consider rinsing your mouth daily with hydrogen peroxide to kill oral bacteria and viruses. Three percent hydrogen peroxide will work, but you should dilute it with water at a 50/50 ratio; you can also add it to your regular mouthwash at the same ratio. Swish the solution around in your mouth for about one minute (don’t mind the fizz), then spit. This daily mouth rinse will help heal sensitive gums and improve your overall oral health.

  • The Benefits of Dental Implants

SAN RAMON — When it comes to replacing missing teeth, the traditional method is to install a dental bridge, which utilizes the patient’s existing teeth to fill in the gap created by one or more absent ones. However, while a dental bridge is cosmetically effective, there are a couple of practical drawbacks to this method. For one, adjacent teeth often need to be shaved down to accommodate the incoming prosthetic. Also, since the bridge is permanently fixed into position, it can make flossing between the adjoining teeth a difficult endeavor.

A more modern innovation that improves upon the traditional method is dental implants. Unlike a dental bridge, dental implants are actually drilled into the jawbone as free-standing teeth, so they don’t require support from adjacent teeth. Once the bone has grown into the implant, a post is placed onto the tooth and a crown is installed. Not only does this create the visual appearance of a genuine tooth, it also simplifies oral hygiene.

SAN RAMON—Dr. Alfred dela Cruz: I’m Dr. dela Cruz, and I’m here in Santa Ramon. I’m a dentist. And today I wanted to provide an expert tip on using a Waterpik. Waterpik can be substituted for flossing. And what it does is, it forces water deep into your gums and it removes all the debris, bacteria—all of the bad stuff. And I usually recommend to do this before you go to bed.

What you do is you fill up this reservoir with warm water, and you can put up a capful of mouthwash in there. And when you use it, it takes away all the debris and makes your gum super healthy. It prevents bleeding, and actually, it’s good for the rest of your body. There’s a lot of links between gum disease and heart disease. And the more you can do to help your gums, the healthier you will be.

SAN RAMON — Host, Sarah Rutan: For those with missing or damaged teeth, modern restorative dentistry can offer a variety of options. Today we’re in San Ramon with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Alfred dela Cruz to talk about the benefits of dental implants.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Alfred dela Cruz: Many people have missing teeth and the traditional way of replacing missing teeth is with a dental bridge. But the way to do that is we shave down the adjacent teeth in order to create room for the porcelain. The bridge is made in one piece, just like so, and it’s cemented and it’s permanently fixed in that position. However, you won’t be able to floss in between, you’d have to floss from underneath.

Contrast that with a dental implant and this goes into the bone and it’s free-standing on its own. And after the bone has grown into the implant, the post is placed onto the tooth just like so and then a crown is put on. And by doing it this way, you don’t have to shave down the adjacent teeth, so it’s much more conservative and it will last you a lifetime.

  • Video: Solutions for Sore Gums

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN RAMON — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you have sensitive gums, there are a couple of oral hygiene measures you should try. Today we’re in San Ramon with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Dr. Alfred dela Cruz to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Dr. Alfred dela Cruz: A lot of patients have bleeding gums. That’s one of their main concerns, so the main thing to do is to floss your teeth. That’s the main reason now why your gums are bleeding. The other alternative to that is to use a Waterpik, and what you do is you fill up – fill this up with water – warm water – and you just squirt it in between your teeth, and the water jet has a lot of energy and it breaks up a lot of the plaque and the film and all the food that’s in there, and it really does a great job of removing all the debris before you go to bed.

The other tip I recommend to use is to use a combination of hydrogen peroxide 3 percent, comes in a brown bottle, and also mouthwash – a combination 50/50 – and you just swish around with it for about one minute, and it will bubble up a lot, but when you spit it out, it really, really makes your teeth healthy.

I am definitely afraid of dentists because some just like to pull teeth and not rectify the situation. He does everything he can to salvage and save your teeth and help you. He tells you what he is going to do and he is not abrasive or hard when doing the work. I was very comfortable there and that is the only time I have been comfortable at a dentist's office. He told me what to expect and what I would need in the future. We worked on a treatment plan. When I called, he was easily accessible.

He is very personable. Most dentists are uptight and not very nice to their staff, but he is the opposite. He treats his staff with respect. He sat down and talked with me. He absolutely loves his job and what he does. You can tell that he is excited about it.
