Company Philosophy

“We understand that customer satisfaction is paramount to our success, so we strive to exceed our clients’ expectations every step of the way and work hard to ensure the ultimate service experience. As a result, our high standards set the standards in the valet parking industry.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for valet parking companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For All About Parking, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is going above and beyond industry standards in every aspect of its operations, from the services it offers to the way it trains its employees. “We stand out because of our experience, training, local knowledge and relationships within our community,” says CEO/Owner Roy Nickolai. “Our performances in these areas have allowed us to offer superior services that meet and exceed our clients’ expectations.”

All About Parking has been providing valet parking services for clients throughout the Peninsula and San Francisco since 2005. The company can handle parking for everything from special occasions and private parties to fundraisers and corporate events, and its uniformed attendants are trained to safely operate all types of vehicles. “We also manage the parking operations of local hotels, office buildings, hospitals, nightclubs, restaurants and other commercial establishments,” adds Mr. Nickolai.

Unlike less experienced valet parking companies that strive to reduce their operating costs by limiting the amount of training they provide for their employees, All About Parking requires each of its drivers to undergo a rigorous, 60-day certification process that includes both driving and written tests. “This process is important for ensuring the professionalism of our employees, both in terms of driving and understanding our specific business philosophy,” says Mr. Nickolai. “Of course, we also drug test them and conduct thorough background checks to make sure they’re as trustworthy as possible.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, All About Parking offers a variety of special services that are designed for clients who want an all-inclusive experience. “In addition to our regular valet services, we provide driving services for people who are unable to drive themselves, travel packages that include airport transportation and car detailing, and even mobile car washing services,” explains Mr. Nickolai. “Our versatility really makes us stand out in the industry.”

Industry Info

When shopping around for a professional valet service, look for one that prioritizes safety.

One of the main concerns of people who hire a valet service is whether their cars will be safe from theft. All competent valet companies will park their customers’ cars in secure locations like private garages, but even those places can present viable opportunities for criminals, so it’s important to take extra measures to ensure the safety of your vehicle and its contents.

The first thing you should do to safeguard the protection of your vehicle is choose a valet service that emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of its drivers. Choosing a company that doesn’t scrutinize the people it hires may put your vehicle at risk—not merely because of inadequate training, but also because it invites the possibility of theft from within. In contrast, a reputable valet service will require all its employees to pass a rigorous certification process, including criminal background checks, fingerprinting and drug tests.

You can also take matters into your own hands to reduce the potential of theft when leaving your car with a valet. “First of all, don’t leave items of value within view,” says Roy Nickolai, CEO/Owner of All About Parking in San Mateo. “It may seem like a minor thing, but you can prevent a lot of theft situations simply by putting loose items in the trunk.”

When looking for a valet parking company, ask if its valets are trained to look inside vehicles and hide items that may attract thieves. “Even if it’s just an empty bag, a good valet will put it out of view because they know criminals don’t discriminate based on appearance,” says Mr. Nickolai. “If a thief thinks there’s something valuable inside of a car, they’re usually willing to break a window to find out, so make sure your valet knows to keep your car clear of valuable items and debris.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will you be able to drive my car?
A: Yes. Since we service so many high-end clients, we deal with all types of vehicle makes and models on a regular basis. Whenever a new car comes in, we show our employees the specifics of operating it.

Q: Will you park my car in a safe location?
A: Absolutely. Our lots are very secure, and we have one of the lowest accident-per-transaction ratios in the industry. We park about 40,000 cars each month, and there are many months where we don’t have a single claim. If an incident does occur, we’ll take care of it right away, even if the damage wasn’t our fault.

Q: Is there any hourly minimum for your valet services?
A: Yes, we require a minimum of three hours per valet for special events.

Q: Do I need to tip your valets?
A: Tips are accepted, but never expected.

Q: Do you conduct background checks on your employees?
A: Yes, we conduct standard background checks that are required by the Department of Justice. We also conduct drug tests, and as part of our insurance and hiring process, we do DMV checks as well.

Q: Do you offer car washing services?
A: Yes, we have two car wash locations in the Palo Alto area. We also recently purchased a self-contained, environmentally-compliant, DPA-certified mobile car wash system—it comes equipped with its own water tank and collection system, which means it applies, cleans, filters and reclaims water so it doesn’t get into nearby sewage drains. We can bring this system anywhere, so if you want us to wash your car while you’re enjoying a party, we can certainly do that.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Roy Nickolai

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Roy Nickolai is a 31-year veteran of the valet parking industry and owner of All About Parking, a Diamond Certified company since 2013. He can be reached at (650) 248-2918 or by email.

Roy Nickolai: A Valet State of Mind

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN CARLOS — Like many young people, Roy Nickolai spent his high school years working a typical teenage job as a valet parking attendant. However, even when he left to pursue a more “grown-up” occupation, in his heart, he never left the parking lot. “Growing up in San Francisco, some of my friends had older brothers who valeted at House of Prime Rib, and as we came of driving age, we were able to work our way into the rotation,” he remembers. “After high school, I continued to valet through college to pay my tuition.”

Following college graduation, Roy started working in real estate, but it didn’t give him the same level of fulfillment that his previous job had. “Doing loans and second mortgages was great, but I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I enjoyed valet,” he explains. “Over time, I got the idea to start my own business. I knew that if I worked as hard as I did at my current job, I would do well. Eventually, I took the leap and started my own valet company, which turned out to be very successful.”

Today, as owner of All About Parking, Roy says his favorite part of his job is the fact that it intersects a broad range of industries and personalities. “Due to the variety of people and businesses that use our service, we get to meet and interact with individuals from all different walks of life, which keeps things interesting. Plus, it allows us to keep a finger on the pulse of the latest trends, as well as the new business and technological developments that are coming up in the Bay Area.”

A San Francisco native, Roy resides today in San Mateo with his wife, Carole, where he appreciates the area’s intrinsic variety. “I think the Bay Area is unique in its level of diversity. Living here, we have access to a really well-rounded lifestyle, including all types of cuisine and entertainment.”

Outside of work, Roy spends his time engaged in a variety of active pastimes, including sports, food and music. “I’ve always loved sports—I played several sports in high school, but these days it’s mostly golf and tennis,” he says. “I’m also a foodie and I enjoy entertainment, especially going to concerts.” Additionally, Roy likes spending time with his family, including his son, Nate, who is currently an English major at UCLA. “We have a huge family, all local, so we do a lot of family gatherings, which is really nice.”

In his life and career, Roy espouses the importance of investing in the youth. “All my adult life, I’ve been passionate about empowering young people, whether through coaching and volunteering or as an employer,” he explains. “I really try to invest in my employees’ personal and professional development by teaching them about respect, responsibility, and leadership. That way, whatever direction they choose to go later, I know they’ll walk away from here with some valuable life skills and character development.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Roy says he’d take a trip. “I don’t really see myself retiring because I truly love what I do and have a vision of growing it to new levels. However, if did retire, I would certainly travel. I’d probably start by taking my wife and son on a trip somewhere we all want to go.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first car?
A: A 1969 Volkswagen Beetle.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Probably Japan. I’ve done a lot of traveling, but that’s one place I haven’t visited yet.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The San Francisco Giants.

Q: Do you consider yourself a dog person or a cat person?
A: Definitely a dog person—we have a beautiful little Corgi named Payton.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Cheese and crackers.

  • Sign of a Professional Valet Service

SAN CARLOS — When using a valet service, it’s not always easy to tell its level of professionalism. One indicator that you’re dealing with a professional company is if the valet attendant walks around your vehicle and performs a damage control inspection prior to issuing you a ticket. The purpose of this inspection is to document any scratches, dents or other damage already on the vehicle, which the attendant will typically make note of on the valet ticket. This simple step will help you avoid any controversy about whether damage occurred while the vehicle was in the valet service’s care.

While it should be part of standard procedure, many valet services fail to train their attendants to perform damage control inspections, which can lead to unnecessary conflicts with customers. For this reason, when using a valet service, make sure your valet attendant performs this crucial step before handing them the keys to your vehicle.

SAN CARLOS — Host, Sarah Rutan: When utilizing a valet parking service, make sure your parking attendant performs a cursory vehicle inspection before handing you your receipt. Today we’re in San Carlos with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Roy Nickolai of All About Parking to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Roy NickolaiA sign that the valet service you are about to use is a professional company is when the valet attendant walks around your vehicle and performs a damage control inspection prior to issuing you the valet ticket. Make sure that when you are using a valet service the valet performs this crucial inspection of your vehicle prior to handing them the keys to your car. The purpose of performing a damage control inspection on a customer’s vehicle is to document any damage on the valet ticket that is found on the vehicle prior to driving the car away from the unloading zone. A lot of valet services do not train their valet attendants to perform this type of inspection which may lead to conflict between the valet companies and their customers.
