Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is crucial for any business, but it’s even more important for fence companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For AMM Fencing, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: provide hands-on quality throughout every phase of every project. “Our customers can be confident that we’ll be there for them every step of the way,” affirms owner Troy Smith. “As the owner, I make sure I’m on every jobsite, from providing the initial estimate to performing the final walkthrough.”

AMM Fencing builds redwood, vinyl, chain-link, and wrought iron fences for residential and commercial clients in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. The family-owned and operated company is known for its premium redwood fences–all of which are built onsite and include pressure-treated posts and kickboards to minimize future rot–but it’s also qualified to build wood retaining walls, gates and a variety of enclosures.

Unlike fence companies that undervalue the importance of communicating with their customers, AMM Fencing keeps in contact with its clients throughout the course of their projects and follows through with them after their jobs are complete. “Our business approach is very customer-oriented, and that definitely sets us apart,” says Mr. Smith. “Our small size allows us to provide direct communication and make sure our clients are completely satisfied. They know they don’t have to go through a chain of people to have an issue addressed, and they really appreciate that.”

Another distinguishing attribute of AMM Fencing is its unique fence building techniques, which includes (but is not limited to) framing by hand to ensure better results. “Framing by hand allows us to use ridged nails and keep the nail heads flush with the framing, which makes for a sturdier frame that’s more impervious to water and rot,” explains Mr. Smith. “All told, it produces a longer lasting fence that also has a personal touch.”

Industry Info

If you’re thinking about building a new fence on your property, consider the benefits of pressure-treated wood. Many people have negative opinions of pressure-treated wood, but according to Troy Smith, owner of AMM Fencing in San Ramon, they’re often making assumptions based on outdated information. “In reality, pressure-treated wood is the best kind of wood to use for certain aspects of fence construction,” he says. “Posts, kickboards and anything else that touches dirt should be pressure-treated to ensure maximum durability and minimize rot.”

One misconception that consumers have about pressure-treated wood is that it’s infused with harmful chemicals that are byproducts of the treatment process. “A lot of focus has been placed on the use of arsenic in the pressure treating process, but many people don’t realize that this method of pressure treating has long since been abandoned in the manufacturing of products for general consumer use,” explains Mr. Smith.

Another negative stereotype about pressure-treated wood is that it’s prone to twisting and splitting. However, according to Mr. Smith, this has less to do with pressure-treated wood and more to do with the quality of the wood grade. “A lot of people don’t want pressure-treated wood because they think it will twist or split, but they don’t realize that there are different grades of wood that have different characteristics,” he says. “Heart-free, pressure-treated Douglas Fir will really minimize twisting.”

When it comes to hiring a company to install any style of fence, an important attribute to look for is a high standard for material quality and techniques, both of which can play a big role in maximizing your fence’s lifespan. “Ask the company about the materials they use, including the grades and thicknesses of the boards and the types of fasteners and concrete,” suggests Mr. Smith. “A contractor’s answers to questions about materials and techniques will generally tell you what type of fence you’ll get. Using nails, solid rails and real concrete instead of staples, hollow rails and post-mix can make a 10- to 20-year difference in the lifespan of your fence.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What size boards do you use?

A: When building a fence, the thickness of the boards is one of the most important factors, which is why we use three-quarter-plus boards and thick two-by-fours, all cut from high-grade redwood.

Q: How does your estimate process work?

A: We’ll schedule an appointment to come to your site and give you a written estimate right there. We can even help with different design ideas and work with your neighbors. Most estimates take about 30 minutes to complete.

Q: What’s your approach to quality control?

A: At the start of every job, we inspect all the materials and send back anything that isn’t up to our standards. Our head foreman and owner always do a walkthrough before work begins so they can make sure everyone is on the same page. When the fence is completed at the end of the workday, we go back and do a final walkthrough.

Q: Do you build anything besides fences?

A: Yes, we also have the training and equipment to build wood retaining walls, gates, and various enclosures.

Q: Are your employees qualified and well-trained?

A: Yes, our staff is comprised of veteran installers and estimators who are trained in industry-best practices and are very familiar with fence styles and local building codes. Everyone who works here has the experience and knowledge to ensure quality results.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Leland Char

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Leland Char is owner and general manager of AMM Fencing. He can be reached at (925) 452-7988 or by email.

Leland Char: Going for Greatness

PLEASANTON — Leland Char acquired AMM Fencing in May 2021 and has since served as the company’s owner and general manager. With a decade of experience working for such high-profile companies as Walmart, Facebook and McKinsey & Company (along with three degrees in business and engineering from the University of Southern California), Leland holds the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure his customers’ approval, his employees’ growth, and his company’s success.

Leland felt the first spark of interest in running a construction business while working as director of operations for BuildZoom in 2015. There, he managed a team of 40 global employees who were dedicated to the company’s mission of matching quality contractors to available projects. Leland succeeded in doubling the company’s revenue during his tenure. More than that, however, he saw firsthand that when homeowners invested in their properties with first-rate contractors and products, they enjoyed both immediate enjoyment and long-term financial returns.

While at BuildZoom, Leland was reminded of his boyhood home and the upside-down door handle that was installed there by a less-than-professional contractor (and still exists as such today!). The son and grandson of entrepreneurs, Leland knew he could do better for his community. He felt confident that he could provide customers with “greatness” from the day they signed on until long after their projects were completed.

Leland is thrilled to have had the opportunity to take the reins of the highly successful AMM Fencing in 2021, and he looks forward to furthering the company’s growth in the coming years. When he’s not working (which isn’t often), Leland enjoys spending time with his fiancée, running (about 50 miles each week) and visiting his family in Hawaii.

  • Knowing When to Repair or Replace Your Fence

PLEASANTON — A high-quality fence can last two decades, but eventually nature takes its toll and some sort of update is necessary. If your fence requires such an update, you’ll need to determine whether it makes more sense to repair it or replace it entirely. Here are two pertinent questions, the answers to which will help guide your decision:

Is there rot? Cracks and holes in a fence’s wood are typically signs of decay or rot. If one or two boards on your existing fence begin to decompose, you can generally fix the problem with wood, putty and steam. But if the problem extends beyond just a couple of boards, a repair probably won’t make fiscal sense. Furthermore, if you notice rotting or decay on the posts (which bear the weight of the entire fence), a domino effect is more than likely, and soon the whole length of the fence will begin to sag and sway.

Is the fence leaning? Loose fence posts can be dangerous. During periods of heavy wind, they can become fully dislodged and carry large pieces of fence out of the ground. If this happens, there’s a risk of damage not only to your fence but to neighboring properties. There are other potential safety hazards that come with a leaning fence, so replacement is always recommended in this situation.

After answering these two questions, you’ll likely have a good idea of whether you should repair or replace your fence. In either case, consider contacting a trusted, local fencing contractor to handle the work for you.

    Complete Video Transcription

PLEASANTON — Leland Char: Hi, my name is Leland Char. I’m the owner and general manager at AMM Fencing. I’ve got an expert tip for you. To repair or replace? That is the question. A well-made high quality fence can last two decades, but eventually nature does take its toll and some sort of update is necessary.

The first question we ask is, “Is there rot?” Cracks and holes in the wood are typically signs of decay or rot. If one or two boards on your existing fence begin to decompose, you can generally fix the problem with wood, putty and steam. But if the problem extends beyond just a couple of boards, a repair will likely not make fiscal sense.

Further, if you notice rotting or decay on the posts (and this is very important) which bear the weight of the entire fence, a domino effect is more than likely. And the length of the fence will soon begin to sag and sway. A thorough annual inspection is what we recommend to give you peace of mind that your fence is structurally sound or give you a heads up that your fence needs attention.

The second question we ask is, “Is there leaning?” Loose posts can be a danger. In heavy winds, they can become fully dislodged and carry large pieces of fence out of the ground. If this happens, there is a risk of damage, not only to your fence, but to neighboring properties. It’s really an all-or-nothing issue, so if your fence is leaning, we recommend replacement.

So once you’ve thought about all of these factors when considering whether to repair or replace a fence, reach out to your local fencing contractor to finish the job.

  • The Importance of Staining a Wood Fence

PLEASANTON — Stain is a coating that’s applied to a wood fence after it’s installed. With just a single application, it penetrates the inner and outer layers of the wood to provide an exquisite look and optimal protection for your fence. Far from being an optional step, stain is absolutely critical to ensure a fence’s long-term beauty and integrity.

Here are a few of the benefits that fence stain provides:

    1. It enhances your fence’s natural look. You’ve invested in the best wood for your fence and now you want to show it off. The right stain enriches the hue of the wood without disguising its natural beauty. We recommend applying a mixture of natural oils that brings out the wood’s deepest colors and textures.

    2. It protects your fence from the elements. Wind and rain can be adversaries to your beautiful redwood fence. While no product can eliminate these challenges entirely, the right stain will help protect your fence against weather-inflicted damage.

    3. You have eco-friendly options. Certain stains are better than others and are made with renewable resources like organic oils and resins. For example, Preserva Wood® products are low on emissions and high on solids, so they offer more value with a reduced carbon footprint.

Whether you decide to stain your new fence yourself or hire a professional, don’t neglect to address this crucial step.

PLEASANTON — Leland Char: Hi, my name is Leland char, and I’m the general manager and owner at AMM Fencing. This expert tip is about what is stain and why should you stain your fence? When building a fence with premium lumber, consider coating it with premium stain. It’s the final step in the process of building your fence and it’s not a small detail. In fact, it’s absolutely critical for more reasons than you might realize.

So, what is stain? Stain is a covering that’s applied to wood after your fence is installed. With just a single application, it penetrates the inner and outer layers of the wood and ensures an exquisite look and optimal protection for your fence.

So, what are the benefits of stain? Number one: enhance the natural look. You’ve invested in the best wood for your fence and now you want to show it off. The right stain enriches the hue of wood without disguising its natural beauty. We recommend applying a mixture of natural oils that brings out wood’s deepest colors and textures.

Secondly, stain protects from the elements. Wind and rain might be adversaries to your beautiful Redwood fence. While no stain can eliminate the challenges entirely, the right stain offers great protection against weather-inflicted damage.

Number three: consider the environment. Certain stains are better than others and are made with renewable resources like organic oils and resins. An eco-friendly company, for example, Preserva Wood®, is low on emissions and high on solids, thus offering more value with a reduced carbon footprint. Once you consider these three factors, you can either DIY the project or reach out to your local fencing contractor to finish the job.

  • Ensuring Code Compliance With a New Fence

PLEASANTON — So, you’ve decided to install that fence you’ve always dreamed of. However, there are some pretty important details that need to be finalized first. Each city has its own regulations when it comes to fencing and some codes are rather specific. Homeowner associations (HOAs) may also require you to obtain their stamp of approval.

Before you start designing your dream fence, you should take the time to review your city and neighborhood ordinances (and obtain signed approvals if required) to ensure your planned structure meets code.

    What do city codes require?
Every city is different, but most codes stipulate a variety of conditions when it comes to fences. Regulations may consider:

    • Height (with different maximums for front and back yards)
    • Distance to the street
    • Style (open or closed)
    • Materials permitted

Keep in mind that codes are subject to change, so make sure you’re reviewing the city’s most current document. After you’ve researched your city’s code requirements and obtained approval from your HOA (if applicable), you can proceed to schedule your fencing project with a trusted local contractor.
