Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for remodeling contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For AMS Construction, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: treat them and their homes with the highest levels of respect. “We understand that our clients’ homes are their most valuable possessions, so we make sure they’re satisfied with every aspect of our work,” says owner Manuel Alonso. “We love the process of taking an old home and making it beautiful again to improve the quality of life for everyone who lives there.”

AMS Construction has been remodeling kitchens, bathrooms and whole houses; building room additions; and providing general construction services for residential clients in San Francisco, Alameda, and San Mateo Counties since 2006. The company’s in-house team of architects and technicians allows it to take a full-service approach to each project, from the design stage to the finishing touches.

Unlike less experienced contractors that take a “hands-off” approach to communicating with their customers, AMS Construction stays in contact with its clients throughout every step of the remodeling process. “We answer the phone, respond to emails and have highly skilled employees who do good work,” says Mr. Alonso. “Our clients know we’ll be available to help them whenever they need us, and they really appreciate that.”

Another distinguishing attribute of AMS Construction is its dedication to quality control in every aspect of its operations. Along with regular walkthroughs and progress checks, the company ends every project by walking through the entire jobsite with the client and looking over the work to ensure no changes or touchups are required before the final invoice is sent. “That’s how we achieve such high customer satisfaction,” says Mr. Alonso. “We work hard to make sure our clients get the results they’re expecting.”

Industry Info

When it comes to completing a remodeling project, it’s crucial to have a mutually beneficial relationship with your contractor.

While contractors are physically responsible for doing the work of remodels or home additions, homeowners are an integral part of the process as well. In fact, many experts agree that having a good working relationship with your contractor is a major factor in any project’s success.

“It’s a two-way road,” says Manuel Alonso, owner of AMS Construction in San Francisco. “Some contractors don’t really care about their clients—they’re just looking to get the work done. But sometimes there are bad clients as well. Some people try to scam contractors by saying they broke something in a room they were never in or refusing to pay the final invoice until extra work is performed. That’s why contractors and homeowners need to be equally picky about who they work with. Good contractors should want to work with good clients and vice versa.”

Mr. Alonso says you can protect yourself by hiring a licensed, insured, experienced company that has good references and a list of prior jobs that have been successfully completed. “You can get a positive outcome regardless of your budget, but insisting on quality is key. Your contractor should present the budget with a breakdown of each item so you can see where your money is going.”

As for your part as a client, Mr. Alonso says communication and honesty are imperative. “Make sure you ask questions, get clarification, put requests and concerns in writing, and have reasonable and clear expectations. Quality contractors want their clients to be happy with the results of their work, so they’ll do what it takes to make that happen. The construction process isn’t always easy, but contractors and homeowners can come together to create something that makes both parties happy.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my project
A: It depends on a variety of factors, but once we determine the scope of work, we’ll be able to give you a time estimate.

Q: Do you have experience working in different parts of the Bay Area?
A: Yes, we have extensive experience with remodeling and building in many cities in the Bay Area. We’re also familiar with each city’s unique permit processes and codes.

Q: Can you show me examples of work you’ve done in the past?
A: Yes. We have numerous photos of past jobs on our website, and we can point out projects that are similar to yours.

Q: What should I have ready before I call you?
A: The first thing you should have is an idea about the design of the project. By knowing what you have in mind, we can give you a more accurate estimate and help you choose the right details. For example, a bathroom remodel can cost between $22,000 and $60,000 depending on the design. Glass, tubs, tile, stone and granite all have different costs, so your choices can drastically affect the cost of the project.

Q: Do I need to know my budget before I call you?
A: Ideally, yes. We can help you determine what your project will cost based on standard prices, but it’s better to already know what you’re able to spend.

Q: Can you help me figure out designs or finishes?
A: Yes. We’ll start by asking you about your experience with remodeling to find out if you’ve been through the process before. That way, we can explain our process without telling you what you might already know. We’ll also give you a questionnaire that’s designed to help you make certain decisions, and we’ll show you pictures of your finish and design options.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Merlyn DeLeon

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Merlyn DeLeon is office Manager of AMS Construction, a Diamond Certified company. She can be reached at (415) 801-4053 or by email.

Merlyn DeLeon: A Constructive Role

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — While she may not wear a toolbelt to work, Merlyn DeLeon nonetheless plays a constructive role in daily operations at AMS Construction. “As the office manager, I get pretty involved with the process of planning and executing our clients’ projects,” she explains. “Besides communicating with clients and handling all the invoicing, I order the materials and products for each job we take on.”

Prior to coming to work for AMS Construction, Merlyn already had 15 years of experience managing a contractor’s office. “I’ve been friends with Manuel [Alonso, owner] for my entire life, so when he needed some help in the office a few years ago, I jumped right in.” Today, Merlyn says her favorite part of her job is seeing clients happy with their completed projects. “My favorite part is at the end of the day when the client is satisfied with the final product—that’s the best feeling.”

A resident of San Francisco (where she lives with her three children), Merlyn spends her time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, rollerblading and cycling,” she details. “My kids like going hiking and biking with me, so that’s a weekend activity we enjoy together. I’m also a big sports fan and enjoy going to Warriors and 49ers games.”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Merlyn says it’s about delivering quality. “At the end of the day, our priority is to provide quality work. When you do good work, you’re more likely to get referrals, and that’s what makes a business grow. Every time a client shows off their remodeled bathroom to a friend or family member, that’s another potential client we may have in the future. So, making sure we provide quality work is super important.”

When asked what she would do if she retired tomorrow, Merlyn says she’d relocate to a familiar locale. “I would move to Guatemala, which is where my family is originally from. My parents and many other members of my family live there, so I go there to visit pretty often. It’s a completely different lifestyle—everything moves at a slower pace and it’s very laid back. It would be a nice place to enjoy my retirement years.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite TV show?
A: “Law & Order.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Italy. I’m planning a trip there for my next birthday.

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Coffee.

Q: What kinds of music do you like?
A: I listen to a variety, but in general, I like slow, mellow music.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for dessert?
A: Apple crumb cake.

  • Choosing Products and Materials for a Remodel

SAN FRANCISCO — When starting a home remodeling project, one of the most important things you can do is choose your materials and products early. For example, with kitchen remodeling, picking out cabinets is crucial. Cabinets take approximately six to eight weeks from the time of ordering to delivery, so you don’t want to wait until a week before the work begins to order. Likewise, when remodeling your bathroom, you’ll want to choose your vanity and tiles well in advance.

Ideally, you should decide on all products and materials during the beginning stages of the project—that way, your contractor can make sure they’re a good fit for the remodel and order them in a timely manner. Work with your contractor to ensure accuracy with things like measurements and quantities. Your contractor can also suggest alternative options in case a certain material or product won’t fit the design or is too expensive.

If you’re having difficulty choosing products and materials for your remodel, consult remodeling websites or magazines for ideas. Collect your favorite designs and share them with your contractor—this will help them understand the direction you want to go in. Remember, your contractor is there to help you make decisions, so don’t hesitate to rely on their professional insight.

  • Video: Preparing for a Home Remodel

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN FRANCISCO — Merlyn DeLeon: A few important tips for you to take into consideration when starting a build or a remodel for your home is picking your products ahead of time, and this goes for your kitchen remodel. For example, to pick out your cabinets it’s going to take approximately six to eight weeks for them to be delivered to you, so you want to jump ahead of schedule and get that picked out. Select the color, select the style you want to have so that you have this ready to go for your contractor. As far as your bathroom remodel goes, if you’re going to have your bathroom remodeled, super important is for you to select the type of vanity that you want to have, the type of tile that you want to have. Work alongside with your contractor — they can help you with measurements for the tiles, with measurements for your vanities, with color selecting. If you’re unsure about something, you could go over pictures of files, or designs that you might have in mind, and that you want your contractor to help you pick alongside with you. Always count on them, rely on them — it’s super important that you work alongside with them so that you make the right choice, not only for yourself, but also for the contractor so that your job gets done properly in a timely manner.
