One of the things I will say is they were very forthcoming with the information they gave us. I went from a Mazda dealership to Napa Auto Care and now I won't go anywhere else.

They are honest. When they needed to do another test that cost more money, they gave me the option to say yes or no. I didn't just get a crazy bill that I didn't know about.

Company Philosophy

“Our customers are the most important part of our business, so we focus on earning their trust and keeping them happy so they feel good about coming back and recommending us to others. Ultimately, their safety and satisfaction are our top priorities.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto repair companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Antioch Napa Auto Care, the keys to keeping customers happy are simple: treat them like family and do whatever it takes to get them back on the road as safely and efficiently as possible. “Our goal is to take customer care to a new level,” says co-owner Eric Zugnoni. “Our customers have our phone numbers and email addresses, and we make sure they know they can contact us 24/7 if they have any problems. Even if we receive a call at 2am from a stranded customer, we’ll send a tow truck and meet them at our shop.”

Antioch Napa Auto Care has been repairing and maintaining all types of vehicles (including motor homes) at its Antioch facility since 2012. The company is qualified to handle everything from routine oil changes and “check engine” light diagnostics to comprehensive engine work, and it also has the training and equipment to perform smog repairs, fuel economy tests, and used vehicle inspections.

Unlike less experienced auto repair shops that take a “hands-off” approach to keeping their clients informed about their work, Antioch Napa Auto Care takes the time to talk with each customer about their specific repairs and explain why they’re necessary. “People don’t like when mechanics talk down to them or simplify things too much, so we never do that,” says Mr. Zugnoni. “We’re always honest with our customers, and we talk to them about technical and financial details in a way that summarizes the information without dumbing it down.”

Ultimately, Mr. Zugnoni sees Antioch Napa Auto Care’s company-wide dedication to quality control as its most important attribute. “We’re perfectionists,” he affirms. “We double-check every aspect of our work, from making sure all the engine caps are on before closing the hood to having another technician verify that our timing belt spots are lined up. We’re very proud of the quality of our work—it keeps our customers happy and ensures their vehicles are safe to drive.”

Industry Info

Why you should choose (and stick with) a local auto repair shop.

Most consumers prefer to work with local businesses. No one wants to feel like just a number, so dealing with hometown employees and company owners who care for customers like friends can be a best-case scenario. “People tend to like working with independently owned auto repair shops that aren’t franchises,” affirms Eric Zugnoni, co-owner of Antioch Napa Auto Care in Antioch. “Independent shops can offer a wider variety of services, provide more personalized care, and hire and train employees who match their company culture.”

Prioritize long-term value over quick fixes

But what about relying on franchise shops for oil changes and tire rotations? “I always try to encourage people to go to an actual mechanic rather than a quick-change shop,” offers Mr. Zugnoni. “Many chains hire employees who aren’t even mechanics. They’re trained to perform the services that the shop provides, but that doesn’t always lead to the best outcome. A local shop will hire professional mechanics who will look out for all the components of your vehicle, even if they’re just performing routine services.”

Build loyalty with a locally owned repair shop

Once you’ve found an auto repair shop that you like, stick with it. “It’s best not to hop around from shop to shop,” cautions Mr. Zugnoni. “If something goes wrong, the shops could point fingers at each other, which can cause gaps or overlaps in service if one shop doesn’t know which services the other shops have provided.”

Some local shops offer nationwide warranties

Many local auto repair shops offer longer or more comprehensive warranties than franchises, and some even coordinate with national repair programs to provide wider coverage beyond their shop alone, like free towing and no-deductible repairs anywhere in the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to fix my car?

A: We need to thoroughly inspect and diagnose the vehicle before providing an estimate, but once we determine that information, we’ll let you know what to expect in terms of cost.

Q: Do you charge for estimates or diagnostics?

A: We have set prices for inspections for oil leaks, noises, doors that won’t open or close, power windows and similar items. We also have set prices for diagnostics for smog failures, ‘check engine’ lights, major electrical and drivability problems, and other issues. The inspections are usually pretty short, but some diagnostics can take hours to complete.

Q: Will you credit my diagnostic or inspection fees to my final invoice?

A: We don’t usually credit diagnostics because they can take hours to complete, but we’re an honest shop, so if we find something within the first 15 minutes, we won’t charge you the full diagnostic fee. Other inspection fees can be waived, like if we do a brake inspection and you need new brakes.

Q: How long will it take to repair my car?

A: It depends on what we find and the availability of parts. As soon as we know what’s wrong with your car and what parts we need to fix it, we’ll call our parts vendors and give you an estimated time for when your vehicle will be ready.

Q: How are you protecting your employees and customers from COVID-19?

A: We used to have a snack bar and coffee bar, but we removed them for health and safety reasons. We use gloves and cleaning cloths, and before our technicians start working on a vehicle, they sanitize door handles, the steering wheel, the gear shifter and other items they might need to touch. When they’re finished with the repairs, they do the same thing and make sure the vehicle is completely sanitized before returning it.

Q: Can I drop off my vehicle before or after normal business hours?

A: Yes. We have someone who lives on the premises, so they can open the gate and help you drop off or pick up your car at any time.

Q: Can you install parts that I provide?

A: No, because there are lots of liability issues that come with using customer-supplied parts. For example, if we install a starter that you supplied and your car catches fire the next day, it would be impossible to know who’s at fault. Did we install the starter incorrectly or was the part defective? Instead, we supply the parts so we can provide solid warranties.

Q: Is your shop part of a franchise?

A: No, we’re an independently owned shop. We chose to become a NAPA Auto Care shop because it gives our customers nationwide free towing and lets them take their vehicles to any of the 13,000 NAPA centers throughout the United States for no deductible. Our customers like that because they get the benefit of working with a local, independent business while still receiving nationwide service.

Eric Zugnoni: A Student of the Industry

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ANTIOCH — Most auto mechanics attend ongoing educational courses, but few can be classified as true students of the industry. Eric Zugnoni falls into this classification, and his educational enthusiasm is a big part of what propelled him to professional success. “During my early years as a technician, I attended a lot of industry-related classes,” he says. “I heard about a teacher in Concord who was highly recommended, so I started attending his classes on topics like advanced drivability and emissions. He became a mentor to me, and when I was laid off by Bank of America, he hired me to help him teach, which I did for about 10 years. Eventually, I decided it was time to have my own auto repair shop. I started out in a little gas station shop on 8th Street in Antioch, and I’ve since moved to our current location at NAPA Auto Parts in Antioch.”

Today, as owner of Antioch Napa Auto Care, Eric says his favorite parts of his job are diagnosing problems and interacting with customers. “After all these years, I still enjoy working on cars, although I don’t get to do it as often as I used to. I’m especially interested in diagnostics, so whenever I get a chance to flex that muscle, I’m a happy guy. My other favorite thing is dealing with customers. I really enjoy building and fostering relationships with customers and making them feel good about bringing their vehicles here.”

A resident of Antioch (where he lives with his wife and business partner, Jodi), Eric spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I’m an avid fisherman, so I enjoy going kayak fishing at local lakes and deep sea fishing in my boat. I’m also a knife collector and master sharpener, and I like doing auto detailing in my spare time.” When he’s not engaged in one of his hobbies, Eric likes spending time with his and Jodi’s two adult children and one grandchild.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Eric espouses the value of communication. “I often get complimented by customers for my honesty and communication,” he says. “They really appreciate getting an explanation for why certain work needs to be done on their vehicles. A lot of auto shops don’t do this, which can leave customers wondering if the work was really necessary. So, we like to put their minds at ease by explaining what needs to be done and why.”

When asked what his life might look like if he were to retire tomorrow, Eric says he’d spend more time enjoying his hobbies and family. “I’d definitely go fishing more often. Jodi and I both love boating and fishing, so we’re hoping to retire in an area that’s near water. I’d also be interested in starting a small car detailing business, and of course, I would spend more time with family.”

Ask Me Anything!

A: New Zealand.

Q: Coffee or tea?

A: Coffee.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: Peanut butter cookies.

Q: What were you most known for in high school?

A: I was voted the nicest guy in my class.

  • An Unintended Consequence of Extended Oil Change Intervals

ANTIOCH —As automotive technology continues to evolve, vehicle maintenance needs are changing as well. One of the biggest examples of this is oil change intervals. For many years, the standard oil change interval was 3,000 miles, but the past decade has seen this interval stretch to as many as 10,000 miles for newer vehicles. This is largely due to advancements in synthetic oil technology, as well as the integration of onboard monitoring that allows car owners to keep tabs on their oil levels and quality without opening the hood.

While vehicle owners will be happy to know they don’t need to change their oil as often, this extended interval brings an unintended consequence. In the past, more frequent oil changes meant that mechanics got to see their customers’ cars on a fairly frequent basis. With today’s longer intervals, a year or more may elapse between oil changes, which allows a lot of time for problems to develop undetected. These include problems that aren’t related to engine oil at all, such as issues related to brakes, tires and emissions.

If you drive a newer car, it’s wise to schedule regular checkups with your mechanic—ideally every six months. These routine inspections aren’t very expensive, and they can save you a lot of money by allowing your mechanic to catch and fix vehicle issues before they get costly.

Expert video tip
  • Video: The Problem With New Oil Change Intervals

    Complete Video Transcription

ANTIOCH — Eric Zugnoni: One of the biggest tips I have for people is later model cars — they have extended the interval between oil changes. Most cars come with oil life monitors that tell you how much oil life you have. A lot of times that can be anywhere from 5,000 miles all the way to over 10,000 miles. So we’re missing where we used to change the engine oil every 3,000 miles, which is probably excessive, but we need to see your car more than every 10,000 miles — at least every six months or so, even if the car sits. The car sitting is worse for a car than if it’s being driven, so we’d really like you to just come in. It’s not very expensive — just get an end-to-end inspection. We’ve saved people lots of money from finding something that was starting to go wrong that has fully failed could’ve cost them a lot of money. And so, try to get your car in every six months or so. I recommend my older customers that don’t drive that much, go no more than a year without having someone look at your car.
