The company has the in-house capabilities to handle everything from routine maintenance and planting to stump grinding and removal, and it also performs landscaping work like design and maintenance, irrigation repair, hardscape installations, and more.

Ultimately, Mr. Rochat sees Arborist Now’s company-wide solidarity as its most important attribute. “No one person is more important than another—ideas are exchanged daily and each employee is listened to and given genuine consideration,” he explains. “We’re a true team with a unified goal: executing every tree care plan safely and accurately.”

Industry Info

To ensure the long-term health of your trees, make proper maintenance a priority.

Whether you choose to do your own tree maintenance or have it professionally done, it’s important to observe correct procedures. In general, trees should be cared for on a two- to five-year cycle, but it varies depending on the type of tree. To ensure proper service intervals, it’s best to consult a certified arborist for your maintenance needs.

Thanks to the mild Bay Area climate, tree pruning can be done year-round. However, there are some exceptions and tips to keep in mind:

  • Pine trees should only be pruned during cooler times of year.
  • Fruiting and flowering trees are easier to prune when they aren’t fruiting and flowering, so it’s best to wait for the offseason.
  • Trees with heavy branches and/or foliage should be pruned before the winter storms come. Don’t wait until the last minute, as tree service companies tend to get very busy in the fall.
  • If you have a problem with one of your trees or think it’s unsafe, have it assessed by a certified arborist.

In addition to pruning your trees, it’s important to water them correctly. Generally speaking, all mature trees are somewhat drought-tolerant, but certain varieties will fare better with regular watering, such as birch, redwood and sycamore. However, the opposite is true for native California oak trees, which have adapted to the dry summer conditions. Keep in mind that your trees’ water needs can change due to environmental factors and the location they’re planted in. Consult a certified arborist if you think your trees are being under- or over-watered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who will supervise my job?
A: Our sales staff will show your job to the crew before work begins to ensure everyone is on the same page. We employ highly trained arborists who know exactly what they need to do on a jobsite, so they don’t need to be supervised. After the work is completed, our sales staff will follow up with you to make sure the work was done to your satisfaction.

Q: Do I need to be home during the job?
A: No. Our crew members are professionals who take great pride in leaving each property looking better than when they arrived. For example, if we have to haul debris through your house, we’ll install interior protection prior to starting the job to ensure nothing gets damaged.

Q: What do you do with the leftover wood?
A: We mill all our tree waste and offer locally sourced wood slabs and finished products through our new division, Arbor Upcycle. We’re proud to provide our community with rare, local and historical material from San Francisco’s oldest residents.

Q: Will you top my tree?
A: We don’t encourage topping. After you top a tree, epicormic shoots arise and develop into weakly attached branches. These branches and the multiple leaders continue to develop girth and weight, which increases their potential of falling and damaging your property. In some cases, a severe crown reduction is called for, but that’s not a common practice.

Jean-Claude Rochat: An Evergreen Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO—Jean-Claude Rochat has pursued several fields of interest throughout his lifetime, from music to mathematics to the culinary arts. However, when it came to a professional livelihood, he decided to stay with a trade that had been perennial since his youth: arboriculture. “Growing up on a farming community in Switzerland, I was exposed to forestry work from a young age,” he remembers. “By the age of 15, I was doing forest management professionally. After taking a few years off to study music in the United States, I returned to Switzerland and began a landscaping apprenticeship for the city of Lausanne, eventually earning my arborist certification. Later, I returned to the U.S. to study mathematics, during which time I did tree work to support myself. My tree service business began to grow bigger and bigger, and eventually I decided to stick with tree work as a full-time career.”

Today, as owner of Arborist Now, Inc., Jean-Claude says his favorite part of his job is being involved in the arboriculture industry. “I love this industry and I’ve enjoyed watching it evolve and become more sophisticated over the years. I also like meeting other arborists, sharing knowledge and experience, and working together to lead the industry toward further improvement.”

A resident of San Francisco (where he lives with his wife, Carine, and their children), Jean-Claude spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes.
“My main hobby is making food,” he says. “On my childhood farm, we would make our own cheese, bread and charcuterie, and that’s a tradition I carry on today. I also brew my own beer. It’s my own little homestead and I enjoy sharing it with my family and friends.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jean-Claude espouses the importance of ethical principles. “My staff and I try to be as transparent as possible when dealing with customers,” he explains. “We keep our promises and really take ownership of everything we do. Of course, we’re not perfect, but we always strive to do our very best.”

When asked what he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jean-Claude says he’d go back to the homestead. “I’d definitely buy a farm and continue to make my own food, but on a larger scale since I would have more access to raw materials. I’d have cows, chickens, goats and a big garden—just like when I was growing up.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite type of tree?
Q: The yew tree is very special to me. We have them in Switzerland and they’re very rare and amazing.

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Espresso—or better yet, ristretto, which is even more condensed than espresso.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: An early bird.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Tadich Grill in San Francisco.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Russia.

  • Advice for Raising Healthy Trees

SAN FRANCISCO — When planting a new tree, proper planting and care go a long way toward ensuring healthy growth. Consider the following tips:

Select the right tree for the right location. Most of the tree problems that arborists encounter stem from poor selection and/or planting. That’s why it’s important to select a tree that makes sense for the location where you’re planting. In addition to knowing the soil conditions on your property, research the tree’s seasonal behavior and irrigation and maintenance needs.

Water as needed. Different types of trees require different watering regimens. For example, birch, redwood and sycamore trees fare best with regular watering, whereas native California oak trees don’t need any supplementary irrigation because they have adapted to dry summer conditions.

Add mulch. One of the best ways to keep a tree healthy is to apply mulch around its root zone, which provides it with nutrition and improves the soil’s moisture retention and temperature regulation. Just make sure the mulch isn’t touching the tree’s trunk, as this can lead to the formation of rot. Reapply your mulch annually.

SAN FRANCISCO—Jean-Claude Rochat: The best advice I could give anyone is to plant the right tree at the right spot and give a great start to each of the trees. And the trees have to be very well planted and very well selected. It’s a very, very important process. Most, most of the problems arborists encounter are related to trees that are badly selected and/or planted. So, my best advice to you for everyone will be to thoroughly think of the best tree to choose for the best location.

  • Video: Mulching For Tree Health

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN FRANCISCO — Jean-Claude Rochat: One of the best advice I can give for everyone interested in keeping their trees healthy is mulching. Mulching will not only provide good nutrient for the tree, but it will also keep the moisture and build a soil that is enriched in life. That will provide the tree with longevity and sustainability. Mulching is the answer, and I will definitely recommend adding mulch every year.
