Company Philosophy

“We understand how stressful it can be to deal with a car accident, so we handle the entire process for our customers so they can focus on getting back to their normal lives. By connecting with every customer on a personal level, we can ensure we’re doing the best work for their specific situation.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto body repair companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Auto Collision Experts, keeping customers happy comes down to two main factors: working hard and being honest. “Quality really matters to us,” affirms General Manager Savi Singh. “We’re not a huge production shop, so we make sure that we give our best effort to every customer.”

Auto Collision Experts has been providing body repair services for all types of vehicles at its Sunnyvale facility and its sister location, ASM Auto Body & Repair, since 2003. The company has the capabilities to handle everything from dent repairs and custom paint jobs to frame replacements and suspension alignments, and it also offers general maintenance services like brake checks and oil changes.

Unlike auto body repair shops whose managers delegate quality control responsibilities to less experienced employees, Auto Collision Experts provides every job with the hands-on expertise of Mr. Singh himself. “I personally check every car at each stage of the process, from the preparation to the finishing paint touches,” he says. “Also, when the vehicle is finished, I go over it with my crew to ensure nothing was missed. Our customers really appreciate our thoroughness.”

Auto Collision Experts further differentiates itself by making sure its customers understand all of the information that’s pertinent to their vehicle repairs. “We want to be the shop that tells our customers everything,” says Mr. Singh. “We provide them with complete estimates, tell them what types of repairs they need and explain why we need to do them. By connecting with our customers on a personal level, we can make sure they’re satisfied with every step of our service.”

Industry Info

If you have a specialty car and you get into an accident, keep in mind that you probably need specialty repairs.

Years ago, vehicles were mostly the same—clunky, heavy bodies built over clunky, heavy frames. When they were involved in accidents, damage was often limited to the exact area of impact and could be repaired with heavy tools and a lot of force. But vehicles are made differently today, and that’s impacting the types of repairs required and the ability of shops to provide those repairs.

“Newer vehicles, including hybrids, are being made lighter and with different metals than traditional vehicles,” explains Savi Singh, general manager of Auto Collision Experts. “Most modern cars are made with aluminum because manufacturers are focusing on lighter vehicles that get better gas mileage. However, those lighter metals aren’t always easy to repair, and not all auto body shops can fix those parts.”

Shops that are equipped to repair newer, lighter vehicles and have adequately trained technicians can return vehicles to like-new condition. But shops without the knowledge and tools to make repairs correctly may take on difficult jobs and do whatever it takes, even if the results are substandard. “Some shops might use Bondo or putty filler to mask problems rather than actually fixing the vehicle body, but that isn’t going to protect you or your vehicle if you’re in another collision,” cautions Mr. Singh.

So, how can you be sure your shop is able to repair your vehicle in the best, safest ways? Mr. Singh advises talking to shops ahead of time to learn how they fix vehicles and whether they’re able to provide the quality repairs you want for your car. Then, if you ever need the services of a body shop, you’ll already know where to go. He also suggests finding a repair shop that’s independent enough to work toward its customers’ best interests instead of bending to the wishes of insurance companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to fix my car?
A: It depends on the type of damage and what it takes to repair it. Once we determine your vehicle’s exact issues, we can give you an estimate.

Q: How long will it take to fix my car?
A: Depending on the size of the job, the repair time could range from two days to a month.

Q: Will you work with my insurance company?
A: Yes. We aren’t affiliated with any one company, so we have the freedom to work with any insurance provider.

Q: Can you help me get a rental car while my vehicle is being repaired?
A: Yes.

Q: Do you provide drop-off services?
A: We can drop you off within 10 square miles of our shop. If it’s out of our range or we’re unable to drop you off, we’ll set up an Uber or Lyft for you.

Q: How many coats of paint will you put on my vehicle?
A: Auto paint is divided into two main sections: base coat and clear coat. The base coat, which is sometimes called the color coat, is the color of the vehicle. We’ll apply as many coats as it takes to cover the repaired area. For example, if there’s primer on the repaired area and we’re using a black base coat, it usually takes about three coats of coverage. After the base coat is done, we add a clear coat. Vehicle manufacturers recommend different amounts of clear coat depending on the texture of the car body, but it’s usually two or three coats.

Q: Will my insurance cover OEM parts?
A: That depends on your insurance coverage, but we can talk to your insurance company and find out. However, we recommend talking to your insurance company before you need collision repairs because most insurance plans don’t cover OEM parts. Instead, you have to buy an OEM endorsement, which is especially important if you have a new vehicle.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Savi Singh

Savi Singh: Career Cultivation

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SUNNYVALE — Growing up in Punjab, India, Savi Singh was always interested in working on cars. However, it wasn’t until he immigrated to the United States that he cultivated that interest into a full-fledged career. “I immigrated to the U.S. in 2003, just before my 18th birthday,” he remembers. “My father had already immigrated a couple of years prior and applied for my mom, my brothers, and I to come join him. I couldn’t attend college during that first year because I hadn’t yet received my green card. So, I started helping my father, who had just opened an auto body shop in Hayward called ASM Auto Body. I’ve loved cars since I was a little kid and had already gained some body work experience in India, so I enjoyed doing that.”

After securing permanent resident status, Savi began attending college as planned. However, he soon realized he’d already found his professional calling. “I was studying accounting and computer science while continuing to work for my father on the side,” he says. “I realized I preferred working with cars over anything I was studying—it sounded a lot better than being an accountant and sitting in an office all day. So, I decided to quit school and focus on developing my career as an auto body professional. In 2008, my family opened a second shop in Sunnyvale, and I’ve been running things here ever since.”

Today, as general manager of Auto Collision Experts, Savi says his favorite part of his job is the variety. “Every job is different and there’s always an opportunity to learn something new. That’s what I like about this work—it’s never boring.”

A resident of the East Bay (where he lives with his wife, Kavleen, and their two young children) Savi spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “Our kids are really young, so I enjoy spending as much time with them as I can,” he says. “Outside of family time, I enjoy playing and watching sports, as well as going hiking and boating with my cousins when I get the chance.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Savi espouses the value of simplicity. “We try to keep things as simple and stress-free as possible for our customers,” he explains. “We’re very straightforward with our quotes—whatever is on the paper is what they’ll get at the end of the day. We treat our customers fairly and honestly, and we’re not obsessed with making a profit. Even if I don’t make any money on a job, if I was able to help someone, I consider it worthwhile.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Savi says he’d take an impromptu trip. “I would pack my bags and go traveling. I wouldn’t plan ahead at all—it’s more exciting to do things last-minute. I would just pick a place, jump on a plane and see what happens when I get there.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?

A: The Oakland Raiders and the Oakland A’s.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Switzerland. I’d like to see the Alps.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

A: Cook some traditional Indian food.

Q: Have you ever met anyone famous?

A: I met MC Hammer at an Oakland A’s game.

Q: Do you collect anything?

A: I collect coins; stamps; and sports memorabilia like jerseys, pins, and bobbleheads.

  • Reviewing Your Auto Insurance Coverage Options

SUNNYVALE — One mistake many vehicle owners make is overlooking their auto insurance coverage options. A lot of people just go with the most basic coverage, but there are several additional options that can benefit policy holders.

One worthwhile option is getting an OEM endorsement: a clause on your policy that ensures aftermarket parts won’t be used to repair your vehicle. This policy clause is key for newer and leased vehicles. For newer cars, OEM parts are recommended to maintain the vehicles’ long-term integrity, and leased vehicles are required to have OEM parts when they’re returned to the dealership.

It’s also wise to look at your policy’s deductible and make sure it’s an appropriate amount. In the event of a collision, a higher deductible will lead to higher out-of-pocket costs, whereas a lower deductible will lead to lower out-of-pocket costs. By considering the age and value of your vehicle, you can choose a deductible that makes sense and will minimize your out-of-pocket expenses.

Other auto insurance coverage options to consider are rental and towing coverage—two affordable add-ons that can benefit you in the event of a collision. Overall, by taking the time to review your options, you can make sure your policy is giving you the most value and benefit for your money.

SUNNYVALE — Savi Singh: One thing a lot of people overlook are their insurance coverage options. Like their deductible, rental, and towing. OEM parts and market endorsement is a key in newer vehicles and leased vehicles. In newer vehicles, it’s recommended to go with OEM parts for the integrity of the vehicle. In leased vehicles, it’s required to have OEM parts when the vehicle is returned back to the dealership. Also, to compare your insurance rate with the other providers, to make sure you have the correct and appropriate amount of deductible, meaning the higher the deductible will lead to higher out of pocket costs at the time of the collision. And lower out of pocket costs at the time of the collision if you have a lower deductible. Knowing your insurance coverage options will put you at ease if you are in a collision.
