Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto repair shops that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For autoTECH Blackhawk, the key to keeping customers happy is simple: take the time to educate them about their vehicle issues and give them options that make sense for their specific situations. “We want to build a reputation for quality and helpfulness,” says owner Kacey Copeland. “People who come to our shop are often having a terrible day, so we make sure we’re always welcoming and ready to solve their problems.”

AutoTECH Blackhawk has been repairing and maintaining European, Asian, and domestic vehicles at its Danville facility since 2018. The company has the in-house capabilities to work on everything from tires and brakes to fuel injection systems and transmissions, and it also has the electrical diagnostic skills to troubleshoot a wide range of automotive issues.

Unlike auto repair shops that try to upsell their customers on unnecessary services, autoTECH Blackhawk approaches every job with transparency and honesty. “When we inspect a vehicle, we help the customer understand its condition by using a ‘green/yellow/red’ inspection report, which lets them know what repairs need to be done immediately and what they should budget for in the future,” explains Mr. Copeland. “They really appreciate how dedicated we are to making sure their vehicles are in the best possible condition.”

Another distinguishing feature of autoTECH Blackhawk is its “Style My Ride” service, which offers customizations that range from lift kits to aftermarket wheels. “We can put together an entire package for the customer and jazz up their car just how they want it,” says Mr. Copeland. “We can also coordinate window tinting, vinyl wrapping, repainting and other services that help our customers personalize their vehicles.”

Industry Info

When it comes to finding an auto repair shop, look for one that’s dedicated to updating its training and technology.

Kacey Copeland, owner of autoTECH Blackhawk in Danville, has seen a lot in his 25-plus years in the auto repair industry, and he says pricing and value aren’t the only things you should consider when looking for a company to work on your car. “When vehicles went from carburetors to gasoline, a lot of shops didn’t want anything to do with the change, so they didn’t learn how to run scan tools or invest in new equipment,” he explains. “I actually see that same mentality today with repair shops that don’t want to learn about electric cars and batteries. Those who are scared off by new technology are making a poor decision, because those are the things that will separate the shops of tomorrow from the shops of today.”

Mr. Copeland explains how electric vehicles have changed the auto repair industry for both drivers and mechanics. “Electric cars still need electrical system repairs, but routine maintenance will cease to exist once those vehicles become the norm. The maintenance items that have kept auto repair shops in business for 100 years won’t be happening anymore, and that will be a huge change. However, the difference in maintenance costs is a good thing for people to know as they’re considering how much they want to spend on a new car. There are fewer things that need maintenance on an electric vehicle, but that’s all the more reason to find a shop you can trust.”

Mr. Copeland says having a convenient location and great customer service is the best way for shops to compete. “It’s critical for shops to take care of their customers and invest in training and equipment. In fact, by choosing and patronizing a shop that provides quality repairs and is forward-looking, you increase the chances of that shop being there to care for your future vehicles, regardless of engine type.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I save money by doing my own car repairs?
A: You might be able to do certain repairs, but it’ll probably end up costing you more money. Unless you have a lot of experience working on modern vehicles, we recommend talking to a mechanic beforehand.

Q: Is my car worth repairing?
A: It depends on several factors, but we can look at your vehicle and explain your options.

Q: Can I skip transmission service and brake fluid flushing to save money?
A: We don’t recommend it. A new transmission costs about $7,000, while transmission maintenance service only costs about $300. It might seem expensive now, but it protects your vehicle and saves you money in the long run.

Q: Can you service my classic car?
A: Certainly. We can take care of regular maintenance on things like brakes, cooling systems and spark plugs, and if your classic car needs a tune-up or a carburetor repair, we can refer you to a station that has specialized knowledge about those types of vehicles. We won’t attempt to do something we’re not qualified to do.

Q: How can I tell if my car needs a new battery?
A: We can run a diagnostic test to see what’s going on. When your battery light comes on, it likely means your car isn’t charging, which is the opposite of needing a new battery. By running a diagnostic, we can tell you exactly what’s wrong rather than selling you something you don’t need.

Kacey Copeland: Taking the Next Step

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

DANVILLE — For Kacey Copeland, starting an auto repair business was simply the logical next step in his professional career. “After several years in the automotive industry, I was considering what my next move would be,” he remembers. “By that point, I felt like I’d become an expert in my field and was just treading water, unsure what direction I should go in. Around that time, the owner of the shop I worked at had another location come available. He didn’t think anyone wanted to buy it, so he was just going to sell the property. To me, it was a sign that this was my next step—to have my own business. Not long after, I was the new owner of autoTech Blackhawk.”

As Kacey recounts, the seeds for his automotive career were planted two generations prior. “My grandfather started a Phillips 66 Service Station in 1966, just outside of Denver, Colorado, where I’m from. My dad started working there after he graduated high school, and I started when I was eight years old. It was a full-service gas station, so when a customer drove up, I’d walk out, pump their gas, check their tires and oil, and wash the windows. Learning how to interact with customers at a young age was definitely beneficial for the development of my social skills, which is something I appreciate looking back.” Following high school, Kacey attended Universal Technical Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, where he earned his professional certification. A few years later, he relocated to California.

Today, Kacey says his favorite part of his job is the customer interaction. “When a customer comes in to my shop, it’s usually on the worst day of their year—their radiator just popped, they have a car full of kids and they need to be somewhere 10 minutes ago. I enjoy putting out the fire and reassuring them that everything will be taken care of. If they need to be somewhere, I’ll often give them a ride. Basically, I try to take someone’s worst day and turn it around into something positive.”

A resident of Contra Costa County (where he lives with his wife, Catherine), Kacey spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “Catherine and I enjoy going hiking and backpacking at places like Yosemite National Park,” he details. “We also love world travel—in recent years, we’ve been to Belize, New Zealand and Canada.” Additionally, Kacey enjoys working with wood and doing small home remodeling projects.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Kacey espouses the importance of honesty. “I like to sleep, and in order to sleep, I need to do everything with honesty and integrity,” he explains. “Often, the news I have to give my customers isn’t easy for them to receive. Believe me, it’s no fun to watch someone’s face when they realize their car needs X amount of dollars of repair work. Nevertheless, I give them the information because they need to know the reality of the situation.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Kacey says he’d head to the hills. “I would probably move back to Colorado and live in the mountains. Right now, Catherine and I live in a tiny house, so it would be pretty easy to relocate.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Burma! Burma! in Dublin.

Q: What’s your favorite TV show?

A: “Suits.”

Q: What were you most known for in high school?

A: I was the kid with the big, white Jeep.

Q: Do you collect anything?

A: I used to collect shot glasses from around the world, but when we moved into a tiny house, I whittled down my collection from about 50 to four.

Q: What kinds of music do you like?

A: I like Mexican and Indian music.

  • Rethinking DIY A/C Maintenance

DANVILLE — If your car’s air conditioning system has stopped working, you may have considered fixing it yourself. All you need to do is add some more refrigerant, right? The truth is, A/C system maintenance is more complex than you might realize, and by attempting it on your own, you could create bigger problems.

First of all, most people don’t realize that refrigerant essentially lasts forever—it doesn’t go bad and it doesn’t dissipate over time. The only reason refrigerant would need to be recharged is if the A/C system has a leak that caused it to evaporate. Furthermore, a lack of refrigerant isn’t the only thing that can cause an A/C system to stop working. For example, the blower mechanism can fail, in which case recharging the refrigerant won’t solve the issue.

Another often-overlooked fact is that refrigerant isn’t the only thing a car’s A/C system needs to function properly—it also needs oil to lubricate the compressor. Do-it-yourselfers who attempt to recharge their refrigerant often forget this crucial ingredient, which can result in a compressor failure and a costly repair bill. This is just one example of how a cheap DIY fix can get expensive fast. So, unless you have prior experience, it’s best to leave A/C maintenance to a professional who’s properly equipped to perform the job.

  • Is Your Car Worth Repairing?

DANVILLE — One of the most commonly asked questions at any auto repair shop is, “Is my car worth repairing?” Unfortunately, the answer isn’t always clear-cut. In some cases, it’s a simple matter of doing the math and taking the most cost-effective route; in others, there are considerations beyond money that factor in.

One such consideration is how attached the customer is to their car. Consider the following three scenarios:

    1. The customer has a strong sentimental attachment to their car. Maybe the vehicle was owned by their father who has since passed away, or maybe it was their first car that they’ve had since high school.

    2. The customer really likes their car and would like to keep it. However, they are also mindful of what’s most cost-effective and want to make a practical decision.

    3. The customer doesn’t have any attachment to their car and would have no qualms trading it for a new one.

If you can relate to the first scenario, it may be worth it to repair your car, even if it isn’t the most financially viable choice. After all, the vehicle has value, even if it’s more sentimental than financial in nature. On the other hand, if you relate more to the second or third scenario, you’ll need to do a little bit of math.

First, get a quote from your mechanic for the cost of the repairs. Next, you’ll need to determine your car’s resale value. You can do this by using the Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com). After you input all the pertinent data on your vehicle (year, make, model, features, etc.), the website will calculate its estimated market value. You’ll receive two value amounts: a private party value (if you were to sell to an individual buyer) and a dealership trade-in value.

Once you have all the numbers, simply subtract the repair estimate amount from the Kelley Blue Book valuation—this will tell you the actual value of your car. At this point, you can decide whether it’s more practical to keep your vehicle and pay for repairs or to trade it for something new. If you need help deciding, don’t hesitate to consult your mechanic.

  • Video: Is Your Car Worth Repairing?

    Complete Video Transcription

DANVILLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your vehicle is in need of substantial repair work, you’ll need to determine whether repair or replacement is a better option. Today we’re in Danville with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Kacey Copeland of autoTech Blackhawk to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Kacey Copeland: So, one of the questions I get asked quite regularly is: Is my car worth repairing? And what I have to tell everybody is that it depends. You know, there’s a – you’ve got to figure out what it’s worth to you and not necessarily market value and then what kind of types of repairs are actually needed.

So, we’ve got three different potential customers that we – that we deal with. We’ve got the customer, number one, would be someone who is driving a car with sentimental value. It was their father’s car, their father passed away, and every time they drive this car, it’s – it’s something that reminds them of him, and it’s definitely something they want to get repaired and keep on the road. Customer two would be someone who, yeah, I’d say they like the car, it’s a great car, but they want to make sure that it’s practical and cost-effective to repair the car. And then customer three would – would, you know, run along the lines of, yeah, it’s a good car, but take it or leave it. I, you know, I fix it if I have to, but I’ll – I could easily get another car.

So, let’s say you’re at your mechanic and you’re into – in the mechanic’s shop for the second time in one year and you need brakes again. The mechanic goes and drives the car and figures out that the actual – the cause of the problem is that the suspension is worn out. So, when you’re hitting the brakes the car’s dipping down in the front so all the energy of the car is being absorbed by the brakes and not being absorbed by the suspension at all; therefore, you’re needing brakes more – more often than you actually should – excuse me – should. So, the cause of the problem is actually the struts. The symptom is the fact that you need new brakes again. So, you – they’ll – they’ll put a quote together for you.

And the things that you need to, you know, figure out or the checklist you’d want to go down would be, you know, what’s it – what’s it actually worth? So, one of the resources that I recommend would be kellybluebook.com. So, you can go onto Kelly Blue Book, you put in your year, make, and model of car, you put in all the options – the trim, does it have a sunroof, does it have alloy wheels, do you have a lift kit on it – and that will give you a private party value and a – and a dealership trade-in value. So, you can take those numbers and add or subtract the cost of the repair and then figure out what the actual value of the car is if you fall into category two or category three. So, those are the kinds of questions that we’re – we’re helping customers out with quite regularly.

  • Video: Maintaining Your Car’s A/C System

    Complete Video Transcription

DANVILLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: Thinking about doing your own maintenance on your car’s air conditioning system? You may want to think again. Today we’re in Danville with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Kacey Copeland of autoTECH Blackhawk to learn why.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Kacey Copeland: So, a couple tips about air conditioning. First one, refrigerant lasts forever. It doesn’t go bad. Second one, the do it yourself repair can end up costing you big time down the road. Example being: a customer goes to- or their refrigerant stops blowing cold so they go to the parts house and they get a can of that, you know, do it yourself and they do it in their driveway, they fill it back up. The problem that happens is that when they had that leak, the refrigerant escaped, obviously, but they lost oil in the same time. So, they added refrigerant, got the compressor working again, but they did not add oil. So, now that systems running low on oil. It can only run like that for so long. So, a $4 O-ring, let’s say, may take out a compressor because when the vehicle was recharged with refrigerant, there was no oil added at the same time. This is why we highly recommend that these kinds of services are done by a certified professional with the right automotive air conditioning equipment.
