Comparative Summary

Few HVAC companies earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can also claim more than 65 years of industry experience, but that’s exactly the case for Bell Products, Inc. “We’ve been producing the highest quality installations in the heating and air conditioning field since 1945, so our customers know they’re going to benefit from our many years of dependable, reliable service,” says co-owner Paul Irwin. “Our longevity and the quality of our products have been the keys to our success.”

Bell Products installs, repairs, and maintains all types of HVAC systems (including radiant heat systems and other energy-efficient options) for residential, commercial and industrial clients throughout the Greater Bay Area. In addition to its heating and air conditioning expertise, the company holds various specialty licenses that allow it to install and repair piping for plumbing systems, custom-fabricate sheet metal, and more.

Unlike HVAC companies that strive to reduce their operating costs by hiring inexperienced employees who have undergone minimal training, Bell Products maintains a staff of highly skilled technicians who are consistently trained in industry-best techniques and products. “Our accomplished labor force gives us the ability to do every job right the first time,” says co-owner Stan Foltz. “From proper duct cleaning to cutting-edge indoor air quality techniques, we’re committed to providing our clients with the best possible services.”

Another distinguishing feature of Bell Products is its “tiered” approach to quality control, which empowers its technicians to make quality decisions on the jobsite that ultimately streamline the entire process. “We also have a quality control position that makes ‘happy calls’ to our customers and inspects all field work before it’s considered complete,” adds Mr. Irwin. “We demand a high standard for all our work, and everyone who works here understands that.”

Industry Info

Educate yourself when choosing an HVAC contractor, but also trust the industry’s technology. The HVAC industry has changed considerably over the last several decades—as technology has become more complex, consumer information has grown considerably to keep pace. Simply put, today’s furnaces and air conditioning units operate differently than those made in the past. Previously, homeowners just needed to know how to turn their systems on and off, but modern systems have adjustable speeds, blower motors, different equipment classes that are part of new product lines, and other variables. Since most people don’t have a clear understanding of these things, it’s up to the HVAC industry to educate them.
HVAC manufacturers have long used technology to increase the efficiency and performance of their products, but as technology has become more complex, manufacturers have become increasingly concerned with the quality and training of the firms that sell, install and maintain their systems. Over the last 15 years, manufacturer-sponsored training has become the chief mechanism for quality control in the industry. That’s why it’s important to look at the training and certifications of your HVAC contractor before work begins.
The Internet has also caused significant changes in the HVAC industry. Homeowners can educate themselves and compare manufacturers and contractors, but heating and air conditioning systems are complex, so even with the Internet, most people can’t come to a final decision without some professional help. At best, the Internet can tell them what questions to ask and what criteria to use when evaluating a system or contractor.
If you want an HVAC system that’s designed to meet the needs of your particular house, you’ll still need the services of a professional. A good HVAC contractor will be able to offer a full range of products and provide solutions for your desired indoor air quality. If any of your family members have allergies or asthma, for example, your contractor can recommend a higher grade of filtration.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Todd Lubash

Todd Lubash: Pure Determination

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

NAPA – One’s professional career is a destination to which there are several avenues, from inheriting a family business to spending years getting a formal education. For Todd Lubash, however, the path to his life’s work was paved by pure determination. “After I graduated high school, my parents decided to move out of state,” he remembers. “I opted to stay behind, but I knew I needed a job to support myself. I’d heard of Bell Products’ positive reputation in the community, so I figured it would be a good place to start.”

The average person might have simply dropped off a resume, but Todd wanted to make an impression. “Every morning for about a month, I would show up at the front office, wait for the company president to arrive and ask him if he was ready to hire me,” he says. “Eventually, I think he just got tired of seeing me, so he gave me a job.” Twenty years later, Todd’s tenacity continues to pay off in his position as senior project manager of Bell Products, Inc.

Todd is a third-generation Napa native, where he lives with his wife, Cherie, and their two children, Danika and Nelson. In addition to the temperate local climate, he says one of the best parts of living in the Bay Area is its topographical diversity. “I love being two hours away from pretty much everything. You can go big city, big country, the beach or the snow—whatever you like to do, there’s an opportunity to do it here.”

Outside of work, Todd participates in a variety of activities, including cycling and martial arts. “I’ve been doing martial arts for over a decade,” he says. “I have a background in Kenpo and hand to hand combat, but with the growing popularity of mixed martial arts, I’ve been exploring some other styles.”

In both his life and career, Todd says he strives to follow the example set by his father. “My father was a great model for how to live life well. Telling your family that you love them every day, being honest and doing right by others—that’s the way he lived his life, and I try to live up to that example every day.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: Top Gun.

Q: Do you have a favorite winery?
A: My favorite local winemaker happens to be one of my best friends, Kian Tavakoli. He produces a small vintage every year, and we always have one of his wines in our cellar.

Q: What’s your favorite movie monster?
A: The Blob.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?
A: Legos.

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: Over easy.

Q: What’s your favorite board game?
A: Doghouse. It’s actually a game my uncle created, and my family has been playing it for years. The object of the game is to be the first to get home and avoid being in the doghouse.

  • A Whole-Home Approach to Energy Efficiency

NAPA — As California building code standards continue to advance, many older homes are falling further behind in terms of energy efficiency, which is why more homeowners are taking a “whole-home” approach to making improvements. Rather than addressing a single aspect (replacing single pane windows with double pane windows, for example), the whole-home approach takes into account multiple areas that affect energy efficiency.

One such area is furnace duct systems. Over time, ductwork can start to deteriorate, whether due to ongoing usage or more active sources such as rodents. Additionally, the duct systems in many California homes can be up to 50 years old—long past their operating lifespans. Since leaky or poorly insulated ductwork can negatively affect furnace efficiency, it’s a good idea to have yours inspected and, if needed, repaired or replaced.

Another important aspect of home energy efficiency is air sealing. While windows represent a major source of air transmission, there are several other conduits for air to enter and exit by, particularly in homes built before modern building code legislation. One example is light switches and circuit plugs that aren’t properly sealed—they can provide a direct channel to an attic or crawlspace and bring cold, unfiltered air into the home. Another example is baseboards, which, even when covered with a piece of trim or molding, can be a surreptitious source of air transmission.

While replacing your windows will certainly have a positive impact, taking a whole-home approach and addressing areas like ductwork and air gaps will enable you to maximize the energy efficiency of your home.

  • Video: Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

    Complete Video Transcription

NAPA — Host, Sarah Rutan: There are many ways to make your home more energy efficient. Today we’re in Napa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Todd Lubash of Bell Products to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Todd Lubash: Well, with regards to energy efficiency, California as a state is mandating more energy efficiency requirements for the home and residences. So, what we find is taking a whole home approach is very important, and not just focusing on box change-outs.

Common misconception these days is that windows is a really good target to go after to change those out, get double pane High-E glass. Those are good to change out, and they certainly are an energy efficiency increase for the home, but they’re not the only thing that you can do.

In fact, there are more things that are under the control of the mechanical system – your furnace and air conditioner – that cause pressure changes within the house. And, therefore, duct sealing, duct work should be looked at. Duct work, over the years, can degrade. They can lose insulation. If you have rodent problems, they can tear insulation off, those sorts of things, and cause leakage in the duct work that wasn’t there the day the house was new.

And let’s face it, a lot of our installed base in California is 30 to 40 to 50 years old, and duct systems just don’t last that long. So, air sealing, inspections of duct systems are important.

Wall switches and plugs in the house, those used to not be required by code to be air sealed like the new standards are for California. And, therefore, that’s access straight to your crawl space or to your attic allowing infiltration when the furnace is running, bringing that cold unfiltered air into your home. And those can be very important to seal up as well.

Air sealing between wall gaps and ceiling to wall space is – also baseboard spaces can be very important. We think that that’s sealed because we’ve got a nice piece of trim on the baseboard there, maybe some crown molding, but that’s not always the case. And a lot of air can be forced in and out of those spaces, again, unfiltered from unsightly areas like your crawl space and your attic.
