Gustavo Guerrero, President

Ben’s Roofing, Inc. provides a wide range of roofing services for multifamily residential and commercial clients throughout the Greater Bay Area. In addition to replacing, repairing and maintaining roofs, the company has the training and equipment to install gutters, skylights, roof hatches, and other roofing accessories. Ben’s Roofing also serves the residential community, but only for new roof installations.

President Gustavo Guerrero says Ben’s Roofing’s emphasis on clear communication throughout every step of the roofing process has been an important aspect of its success. “Many people are apprehensive about having new roofs installed because they’re afraid something will go wrong. To alleviate those concerns, we walk our clients through the entire process and make sure they have a complete understanding of what’s going to happen from beginning to end.”

Ben’s Roofing backs every new installation with a comprehensive five-year warranty. “Also, to put our clients’ minds at ease, we don’t accept payment in full until all work is complete,” adds Mr. Guerrero. “Our goal is to provide every customer with the best long-term solution to their roofing issues.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for roofing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Ben’s Roofing, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: continually add value to its services in order to provide its clients with quality results. “We’ve invested thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into training so we can improve our processes and offer better customer service and value,” says President Gustavo Guerrero. “This approach allows us to provide every client with long-term solutions to their roofing issues.”

Ben’s Roofing, Inc. provides roofing services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Greater Bay Area. The company’s primary focus is replacing, repairing, and maintaining roofs on everything from single-family homes to commercial properties and multi-unit housing, but it also has the training and equipment to install roofing accessories such as gutters, solar tubes, skylights, and roof hatches.

Unlike roofing companies that are too small to quickly address their customers’ needs or effectively handle emergency repairs, Ben’s Roofing, Inc. has the in-house capabilities to provide immediate assistance whenever its clients need help. “When someone has a roof problem they want it fixed right away, and we have the ability to do that,” says Mr. Guerrero. “In fact, we strive to get to every client within 24 hours of their initial call. We’ll come take pictures of the problem, write a proposal or service request, and quickly fix the issue upon approval. Our flexibility and availability really set us apart and give our customers peace of mind.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Ben’s Roofing, Inc. is its status as a certified roofing installer for several major manufacturers, including CertainTeed; Duro-Last Roofing, Inc.; Firestone; IB Roof Systems; Johns Manville; and more. “Since we are trained and certified by the companies whose products we offer, we’re able to install roofs to their exact requirements,” explains Mr. Guerrero. “We never cut corners or buy inferior products, so our clients qualify for longer warranties and get professionally installed roofs that look great and last for many years.”

Industry Info

If you’re thinking about installing solar panels on your home or business, consider getting a roofing contractor involved. Solar energy systems are a cost-effective way for homeowners and business owners to provide their properties with energy, save money, and use fewer public resources. However, according to Gustavo Guerrero, president of Ben’s Roofing, Inc. in Oakland, it’s important to consider the state of your roof before making any purchasing decisions. “Solar energy systems are great, but if your property has an older roof, you need to be cautious about installing panels because they add heat and weight that can cause premature wear and damage,” he explains. “If your roof’s lifespan is shortened by five to 10 years, that means it’s wearing out faster than you’re gaining energy credits, so you’ll have to replace your roof sooner than you might think.”

Many property owners are also surprised by how much work and money is involved when it comes to removing solar panels to replace the roof underneath. “The entire solar system has to be disassembled and then reassembled once the new roof is in place, which can surpass the labor cost of installing it the first time,” says Mr. Guerrero. “Before making a decision, you should have a qualified roofing contractor come out and inspect your roof. The roof might need repairs or upgrades, you might need to buy lighter solar panels, or it might be a better option to wait until you need a new roof and have both installed at the same time. Either way, a roofing contractor will be able to help you make an informed decision based on your specific situation.”

Before hiring a roofing company, make sure the contractor has the ability to add you as an “additional insured.” Ask for a certificate of insurance naming you, the owner or the property manager as the additional insured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you keep a clean jobsite?

A: Yes, we make sure to clean the jobsite every day before we leave for the evening.

Q: Do your employees wear uniforms that identify them as workers?

A: Our lead foremen wear button-up shirts with their names on one side and the company logo on the other. They also wear green hard hats so you know exactly who’s in charge. The rest of our crew members wear gray t-shirts and white hard hats. That way, it’s easy to identify who is authorized to work on your home.

Q: Do you provide any warranties?

A: We provide a five-year written warranty for labor and materials on new roofing installations. That’s pretty standard for the roofing industry.

Q: Do you have a physical office?

A: Yes. We believe it’s important to have a physical location because it speaks to our professionalism. We’re a real, long-standing company with a piece of property where we store our trucks and materials, and that’s not always a given in this industry.

Q: Is the roofing installer I choose really that important?

A: Yes, hiring the right contractor is very important. There are ways to skirt around quality and install a roof faster and cheaper, but that leaves the roof without a valid warranty, so if you run into problems down the road, you probably won’t get anything in terms of warranty payments. You can file a claim with the manufacturer, but if the roof wasn’t installed to their standards, they won’t honor the warranty.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Gustavo Guerrero

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Gustavo Guerrero is president of Ben’s Roofing, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2014. He can be reached at (510) 606-8793 or by email.

Gustavo Guerrero: An Inherited Motivation

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

OAKLAND — When asked how he became involved with the roofing industry, Gustavo Guerrero cites the influence of his father. “My father started roofing in the early ’70s,” he explains. “When I was 10 years old, he realized that in order to provide me with a college education, he’d need to take his career to the next level, so he started his own roofing business. Thanks to his hard work, after high school I was able to attend the school of my choice—Santa Clara University—and become the first person in my family to earn a college degree.”

After graduating with a degree in business management, Gustavo decided to apply his newly acquired knowledge close to home and went to work for his father’s business. Over the next 13 years, he gained experience in both the hands-on and administrative aspects of the industry. Eventually, Gustavo felt the urge to strike out on his own, and in 2012, he started his own roofing company.

Today, as president of Ben’s Roofing, Inc. (named after his son, Benjamin), Gustavo says he shares the same motivation for success that drove his father before him. “I want to provide opportunities for my kids, particularly in regard to their education. In that way, my goal is no different than my father’s when he started his business two decades ago.”

A resident of San Leandro (where he lives with his wife, Rosario, and their children, Natalia and Benjamin), Gustavo says he appreciates the characteristic diversity of his Bay Area locale. “In addition to the diversity of the people, I appreciate the architectural diversity we have here in the Bay Area. We work on a variety of homes and buildings, which provides new challenges and makes our job a lot more interesting.”

Outside of work, Gustavo spends the majority of his free time with his family. “With the amount of hours I work, it can take a toll on the family, so we try to spend as much time together as we can,” he says. “The kids are really into swimming, so in the summer we spend a lot of time at the water park. We also enjoy going on trips to Southern California and Mexico, just to get away from it all.” In addition to family activities, Gustavo is an avid sports fan. “I support the local teams here in Oakland—the A’s, the Raiders and the Warriors. I try to attend a few games each year.”

In his professional life, Gustavo espouses the importance of operating with honesty and integrity. “In business, there are a few different ways to go about solving any given problem, each with its own risks, so it’s important to be able to choose the one that lines up with your philosophy and values,” he explains. “For us, our priority is to install quality roofs that last. If we get into a situation where a customer wants us to do things in a way that compromises quality, we’ll pass on the job, because that’s not how we operate.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Gustavo says he’d get involved in a new entrepreneurial field. “I probably get into owning and managing commercial properties. That’s one thing I’ve always been interested in doing, but it’s probably a few years down the road.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Ever read a book more than once?
A: “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson. It’s basically about dealing with changes in life and business. In the trades especially, things can change pretty rapidly, so it’s important to be able to adapt.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I’d definitely go to the past. I think it’d be neat to relive some of my childhood and spend time with past relatives. Plus, going into the future is a little scary.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: El Portal in San Leandro.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: It may sound crazy, but I love answering emergency calls and getting drenched while trying to solve a roof leak. Until you’ve done it, you can’t appreciate how much fun it is!

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Watermelon.

  • Addressing Attic Ventilation With Roof Replacement

OAKLAND — A crucial yet often-overlooked aspect of roof installation is addressing attic ventilation. Proper attic ventilation is a must for any home with a steep-slope roof. When attic ventilation is insufficient, it can shorten the roof’s lifespan and require premature replacement.

So, how exactly can insufficient insulation shorten a roof’s lifespan? As heat and moisture (such as steam from cooking and bathing) rise to the top of the home, they often find their way into the attic. If the attic isn’t sufficiently ventilated, that heat and moisture becomes trapped. On a hot day, heat buildup in the attic can become so extreme that it actually cooks the roofing shingles from below. Given enough time, heat buildup can even weaken the wood framing that holds the roof. Furthermore, the presence of moisture can create humid conditions that are ideal for mold and mildew, which can further contribute to the roof’s accelerated degradation.

Unfortunately, a lot of homes in the Bay Area have these problems due to a lack of sufficient attic ventilation. These are typically older homes that were built long before the strict building codes of today were put in place. For this reason, if you own an older home, you may be required to bring your attic ventilation up to code in conjunction with replacing your roof. This can be quite expensive, so it’s a good idea to get a consultation in advance and plan your budget accordingly.

In addition, be sure to work with a reputable roofing company. Some companies will say they’re going to address attic ventilation but fail to follow through, which can leave you in a bad situation. So, don’t just hire the cheapest company—shop around, check references and hire a roofer you can trust.

  • A Crucial Aspect of Gutter Installation

OAKLAND — Gutters are the crux of a home’s drainage system—they protect the roof and house from water damage caused by rain. When it comes to installing new gutters, there’s one small detail that, if overlooked, can compromise their long-term integrity.

A vital aspect of gutter installation is situating the gutters at the proper angle. A certain amount of slope is needed to allow water to travel toward the down-spouts and exit the gutters. Some people mistakenly install gutters at a level plane, which results in standing water that can cause the gutters to rot out prematurely. To avoid this, it’s important to verify that your contractor understands the importance of installing your gutters at a slight angle to provide proper drainage.

OAKLAND — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning on replacing your gutters, it’s important they are installed correctly. Today we’re in Oakland with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Gustavo Guerrero of Ben’s Roofing to learn why.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Gustavo Guerrero: If you’re having gutters installed, make sure your contractor does not install the gutter straight or level. If this happens, water will stay inside the gutter, and rot them out prematurely.

Make sure your contractor provides proper slope towards the downspout for proper drainage.
