Company Philosophy

“There’s no such thing as a big job or a small job to us—we put the same amount of effort into every vehicle, regardless of the extent of the repairs. Our goal is to achieve complete customer satisfaction by maintaining our reputation for providing high-quality, reliable repairs and continually improving our methods and services.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto body repair companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Cal Auto Body, the key to achieving high levels of customer satisfaction is not only upholding its reputation for providing high-quality work and reliable service, but also continually improving its methods and services. “We don’t want our customers to leave until they’re 100 percent satisfied, so we do whatever it takes to ensure that happens,” says owner Nana Sarkisian. “Our motto is, ‘Drive in with a pile and out with a smile.'”

Cal Auto Body has been providing a complete range of body and collision repair services for all types of vehicles at its Colma facility since 2001. The company utilizes a variety of state-of-the-art technology to return customers’ cars to their pre-accident conditions, including a unibody laser straightening system specifically designed for SUVs and trucks, a computerized paint matching system and more.

Unlike less experienced auto body shops that strive to maximize their workload volume but sacrifice personalized service in the process, Cal Auto Body takes an attentive, one-on-one approach to dealing with every customer. “We understand how important it is for our customers to get their cars back as quickly as possible, so we’re always working to get paperwork turned around, arranging rental cars and so forth,” says Ms. Sarkisian. “Our favorite part of the process is looking at the faces of our customers when they first see their cars. All they remember is the damage, so to see them surprised and happy is very rewarding.”

Another distinguishing feature of Cal Auto Body is the comprehensive approach it takes to quality control on every repair job, regardless of the size. “Each car goes through three levels of quality control checks before it leaves our facility,” explains Ms. Sarkisian. “Both the painter and main body technician thoroughly inspect the car, and I conduct the final quality check myself. We make sure to fix every little detail–if it’s a concern to the customer, it’s a concern to us.”

Industry Info

Make sure your auto body shop uses the best materials available on the market. When it comes to environmentally-friendly business practices, most auto body shops are on equal footing—the industry is heavily regulated and all licensed facilities must meet the same standards. For example, all paints must be water-based to prevent harmful chemicals from leaching into the water supply, and all painting must be done in a contained facility to prevent chemicals from going into the air. However, even though all auto paints are environmentally-friendly, they’re not all the same in terms of quality. “The best auto body shops use PPG paints,” explains Nana Sarkisian, owner of Cal Auto Body in Colma. “They’re widely recognized as the best in the industry, so be wary of a shop that doesn’t use them.”

California law stipulates that insurance companies aren’t required to cover original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for any car that’s older than two years, which means your insurance company can instruct the shop to substitute second-hand, reconditioned or aftermarket parts. If you want to use OEM parts on an older car, you’ll often be responsible for the price difference, so make sure you understand the specifics of your situation before proceeding.

A reputable auto body shop should also be able to clearly explain the extent of your damages and what needs to be done to fix them, so don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you perceive the answers to be simple or obvious. “Few non-industry people truly understand the intricacies of the auto body repair process, so don’t think you’ll be at a disadvantage relative to other customers,” says Ms. Sarkisian. “Likewise, women shouldn’t be afraid to ask a male technician a question about the process. If a shop has reputable, trained technicians, they won’t think less of you for asking basic questions.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts?

A: That depends on your insurance policy. If your policy covers OEM parts, we’ll definitely use them. If not, the choice is yours, but you’ll be responsible for the difference in price between aftermarket parts and OEM parts.

Q: Can you match my original paint color?

A: Yes. Our computerized paint matching system ensures we’ll be able to completely match the new paint to the old paint. We can even match custom paint jobs, but that’s often more expensive because it takes more work.

Q: If you find additional damage after taking the car apart, will that be covered by my insurance?

A: Yes. We’ll file the necessary supplemental paperwork with your insurance company. You don’t need to worry about discovering additional damage.

Q: How experienced are your technicians?

A: Our technicians average 25 years of industry experience, and our main body technician has 40 years of experience in auto repair.

Q: Can you help me arrange a rental car?

A: Yes. We usually use Enterprise—we’ve been working with them for 10 years, and they’ve always been very professional and provided reasonable rates for our customers.

Nana Sarkisian: A Drive to Succeed

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

COLMA – If you were talking to Cal Auto Body owner Nana Sarkisian, you might be surprised to learn there was a point in her adult life when she wasn’t even legally able to drive a car. Recently married and a new mother, Nana’s first few years living in the United States after leaving her home country of Armenia were, as she describes, a trying time. “For a while I felt like I was going one step forward and two steps backward in my life. As a stay-at-home mom who didn’t speak much English or even have a driver’s license, I felt fairly isolated.” This situation was especially challenging for someone as independent as Nana, who by age 21 had earned her master’s degree in industrial engineering, a field in which she worked for four years prior to coming to America. Fortunately, her circumstances gradually improved. “Eventually, my mom came over to help with things, which gave me a little more freedom to get myself educated in English, get a driver’s license and basically feel human again.”

Nana’s then-husband had spent several years working in the auto repair industry in various capacities until they both decided it was time to shift things into high gear. “In 2001, we bought an existing auto shop and changed the name to Cal Auto Body,” she remembers. Eager to jump back into the work world, Nana took an active role in running the shop. “I was in charge of the customer service, administration and accounting, while my husband handled the estimating and parts ordering.” However, as time went by, Nana became increasingly immersed in the more hands-on aspects of the shop’s business. “I ended up doing a lot more on the repair side, writing estimates and that sort of thing.”

In fact, Nana’s work at Cal Auto Body wasn’t her first exposure to the world of auto repair. “When I was a young girl, my dad used to spend all day in the garage and wouldn’t come out from underneath his car,” she remembers. “I would bring him lunch and he’d hand me a part to clean or have me help him with something. I’d start asking him questions about what he was doing, until he eventually got tired of all the questioning and kicked me out!”

In 2008, Nana took the helm as sole owner and operator of Cal Auto Body. Since that time, she has employed her accumulated experience and professional acumen to improve the business, taking advantage of promotional outlets like social media and consumer-friendly organizations. “Over the last five years, not only have we been able to increase our business, we’ve been able to maintain an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau,” she says. The shop’s Diamond Certified status further indicates its dedication to customer satisfaction.

Outside of work, Nana engages in a variety of hobbies and pastimes. “I do a lot of oil painting,” she says. “I’m always amazed at the things that come out of my head when I’m painting—very abstract stuff.” Nana also says that whenever it’s sunny, she’s likely to be at the beach. “I think in my previous life I was a fish,” she laughs. “The sand, the water, the shells, the smell of the seaweed—I love anything that’s connected to the sea. Even food…seafood is my favorite!” In addition, Nana likes to keep up with her daughter, Maria, a chemistry student at Skyline College in San Bruno. “She’s eventually hoping to transfer to UC Berkeley or UC Davis and study molecular toxicology. She’s a real smart cookie and I’m very proud of her.”

Looking back, Nana says the expression “givers gain” has proven to be true throughout her life and career. “You give, you receive; you don’t give, you don’t receive. It’s actually very interesting how this happens in auto body work. We always take care of customers and try to give them more than they expect. In return, they give us compliments and refer their friends to us. So, I think this philosophy of giving has really been a big part of our success.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first car?
A: A ’94 Lincoln Continental. My family expected me to crash whatever car I had, so they gave me one that nobody cared about!

Q: If you could drive any car, what would it be?
A: A 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?
A: Barracuda Sushi in San Francisco.

Q: Are you a dog or cat person?
A: I’m totally a dog person, but guess what? We have a cat!

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
A: Nana is my nickname. My real name is Gayané. Everybody calls me Nana because it’s just easier to pronounce.

Q: If you were doing karaoke, what song would you sing?
A: I’d sing two songs, both by The Beatles: “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and “Yesterday.”

Q: If someone was making a movie about your life, which actress would you choose to play you?
A: Sandra Bullock.

  • What to do in the Event of an Auto Collision

COLMA — A car accident can be a jolting experience, even if it’s just a minor collision, which is why drivers sometimes forget what to do next. Besides confirming the safety of all passengers involved, there are a couple crucial steps to take following an accident.

After making sure all passengers are safe, the first thing you should do is obtain the other driver’s information. While writing down contact and insurance information is standard protocol, the prevalence of smartphones often makes it more efficient to simply take a picture of the other driver’s insurance card and license. Also, be sure to take a few photos of the damage sustained by each vehicle—these pictures can serve as documented evidence for any legal issues that come up in the future.

While photos can protect you legally, you also want to protect yourself physically. After taking photos and swapping information with the other driver, you need to determine if your own car is in operable condition before driving it. While a flat tire is an obvious indication that you need a tow truck, it’s also important to look underneath your vehicle to see if any liquid is leaking from the engine. If you see any leaking fluids, your car needs to be towed, not driven, to a repair shop.
