Charles Lee, Owner

California Concrete Pump Pros provides a complete range of concrete services for residential and commercial clients in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. As a specialty contractor, the company focuses on all aspects of concrete, such as design, demolition, forming, pumping, installing and finishing. This includes foundations, walkways, driveways, patios and pool decks.

Owner Charles Lee says being a concrete specialty contractor separates California Concrete Pump Pros from the competition. “We work with concrete on a daily basis, so we’re able to bring this knowledge to our customers and offer them an unsurpassed product. In fact, because of our extensive knowledge and experience, we provide our service to hundreds of general contractors. We’re their ‘go-to guy’ when it comes to concrete.”

California Concrete Pump Pros is known for its steadfast dedication to quality control, which Mr. Lee says is the most important aspect of being successful in the concrete industry. The company owns all its own equipment, which means it can pass those savings to its customers. “Having reasonable pricing isn’t the only reason our clients keep coming back—it’s because we focus intently on quality in every aspect of our work,” says Mr. Lee. “We concentrate on what we do best, which is concrete, and provide a high-quality product every time. We really are the pros of the industry.”

“We strive to do every job right the first time. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t hold back on the quality of our materials or workmanship. Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for concrete companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For California Concrete Pump Pros, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: focus all its efforts on providing top-quality concrete services instead of taking on a variety of construction work. “We’re a specialty contractor, not a jack-of-all-trades, so we’re able to approach every concrete project as true experts,” says owner Charles Lee. “We utilize our industry knowledge and experience to offer our clients unsurpassed concrete products, and they really appreciate that.”

California Concrete Pump Pros has been providing concrete services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Bay Area since 2005. The company has the training and equipment to handle every aspect of its customers’ concrete projects, including design, demolition, forming, pumping, installing and finishing. “We can do everything from foundations, walkways and driveways to patios and pool decks,” says Mr. Lee.

Unlike less experienced contractors that offer concrete work as a supplementary service and take a “one size fits all” approach as a result, California Concrete Pump Pros takes a detail-oriented approach that ensures the high quality and longevity of each project. “Concrete is a finicky medium–you only have a small window of time to work with it before it sets, so if a contractor doesn’t have the right experience, they can take too long and ruin the entire project,” explains Mr. Lee. “We work with concrete every day, so we understand exactly what it takes to perform a quality installation.”

Another distinguishing attribute of California Concrete Pump Pros is its comprehensive approach to quality control in every aspect of its operations. “We never cut corners or skimp on quality,” says Mr. Lee. “For example, as far as materials are concerned, we use solid steel rebar instead of wire mesh. Our clients might not see the difference right away, but our concrete installations will last for many years while cheaper installations will start to crack.”

Industry Info

Save time and money by refinishing existing concrete instead of having new concrete installed.

Savvy homeowners have recently discovered that some concrete companies can make old concrete look like new—a welcome alternative to the old process of tearing out and replacing structurally sound concrete just to attain a new look. Not only is this a more environmentally-friendly option (since it saves concrete from going to landfills), it’s also much more affordable. “There’s no reason to tear out existing concrete that’s still structurally sound,” says Charles Lee, owner of California Concrete Pump Pros in Antioch. “If it hasn’t cracked or shifted and it doesn’t have holes or damage, it can be made to look like new at the fraction of the cost of a new installation.”

Recent coloring technology has also made it easier to give existing concrete a facelift. “As recently as a decade ago, if you wanted colored concrete, a contractor had to jackhammer out the old concrete and re-pour new concrete,” explains Mr. Lee. “Today, contractors can just put a thin coating of colored polymer right on top of existing concrete. It’s only about an eighth of an inch thick, but it’ll last as long as the concrete is sound, which should be 10 to 20 years.”

There are many choices when it comes to concrete coloring—some companies offer more than 60 different colors, from neutrals to bold hues. Concrete stains and dyes have different applications, so make sure you consult your contractor about the specifics of your project before making a decision. “Existing concrete takes pigmentation a little differently than new concrete, and the type and age of the existing concrete can change the way the color takes as well,” says Mr. Lee. “Your concrete contractor should be able to give you a good idea of how closely your concrete will match the color sample you chose.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will my concrete project take to complete?

A: It depends on the size of the project, but we’ll let you know the specific timeline before any work begins.

Q: Do you stay on the jobsite from start to finish?

A: Yes. When we start a project, we’ll be there every day until it’s done.

Q: Will my new concrete crack?

A: Concrete is a porous material, so it tends to crack over time, but we follow certain methods to maintain the concrete’s integrity and prevent it from cracking. For example, the underlayment and sub-foundation are as important as the concrete itself, so we put down at least two inches of base rock and compact it, which acts as a buffer and prevents the ground from moving the concrete. We also use steel rebar instead of wire mesh, which helps give our concrete tensile strength and prevents it from separating. Finally, we use 2,500 PSI concrete, which is stronger than the industry standard and gives the concrete a little more bonding strength so it’s less likely to crack.

Q: Can you match my new concrete with my existing concrete?

A: We can certainly try to match new concrete with old concrete, but if the old concrete has been sitting for many years, it can be tricky to get an exact match.

Q: Can you install colored concrete?

A: Yes, and we have about 60 different colors that you can choose from. However, the exact color of the final product may vary slightly from the samples we give you—new concrete and existing concrete take color pigmentation a little differently.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Charles Lee

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Charles Lee: Concrete Ambition

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ANTIOCH — In his former career as a restaurateur, Charles Lee made a name for himself by building restaurants from the ground up. What he didn’t realize, however, is that this vocation would later serve as the catalyst for an entirely new livelihood. “Having been involved with several restaurant construction projects, I had seen how a lot of contractors worked and often wasn’t particularly pleased with their services,” he explains. “Finally, I decided to try my own hand at it. I got some commercial real estate property, demolished everything and built it from the ground up, starting with the foundation. I found the process very interesting and I really enjoyed the work, so I decided to put my talents to use and start a concrete company.”

After several years in the concrete business, Charles decided to widen his professional prospects and got his contractor’s license in 2005. Today, as owner of California Concrete Pump Pros, he says he continues to enjoy the process of creating something out of nothing. “It’s a lot of fun to build something new from the ground up, and it’s very rewarding to see the fruits of my labor when the project is completed.”

Having grown up in San Francisco, Charles says his favorite aspect of life in the Bay Area is the diversity of its populous. “The people make this area what it is. We work from San Jose to as far north as Napa, and the variety of people we have the privilege to meet makes our job that much more pleasurable.”

Charles’ career takes up the bulk of his schedule—“Right now I’m working seven days a week!” he says—so most of his time outside of work is devoted to his three children: Alicia, Kristin and Tyson. “As a single parent, my kids are the love of my life. My oldest is 23 and my youngest is eight, so I have quite a spread.” Charles describes most of the family’s activities as being aquatic in nature. “My kids grew up near the Delta, so they all love the water. If we’re not out on a fishing or boating excursion, you’re likely to find us in the swimming pool at home.”

In his life and career, Charles espouses the importance of attention to detail. “Something I tell my kids is to always take time to do things correctly the first time—that way, you won’t have to come back and revisit it later. This is the same philosophy I apply to my business, and it goes a long way toward keeping customers satisfied with our work.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Charles says he’d take a long-deferred vacation. “I haven’t been on vacation in many, many years. In fact, I have more than a million frequent flyer miles that I don’t have time to use. If I could retire tomorrow, I’d do some traveling with the kids…maybe rent an RV and try some new fishing spots.”

Ask Me Anything!

A: House of Prime Rib in San Francisco.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
A: Oatmeal.

  • How to Protect Your Concrete

ANTIOCH — Many people don’t realize that even though concrete is a hard, sturdy product, it’s also extremely porous. Because it readily absorbs liquids, concrete areas such as driveways and patios are susceptible to staining by everything from motor oil to red wine.

A good way to prevent this from happening is to have your concrete areas sealed on an annual basis. The seal acts as a clear coat that sits on top of the concrete surface and makes it impenetrable to liquids. When a liquid spills on sealed concrete, you can simply hose it down and it comes right off without being absorbed and leaving a stain.

  • Video: Preventing Concrete Stains

    Complete Video Transcription

ANTIOCH — Host, Sarah Rutan: Since concrete is a porous material, it is prone to stains from liquids such as motor oil. Today, we’re in Antioch with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Charles Lee of California Concrete Pump Pros to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Charles Lee: Just a quick tip I’d like to tell consumers is concrete is a porous product and what that means is that concrete, even though it looks very hard and sturdy, it will absorb water like a sponge. Any type of stain that you put on the concrete whether it be red wine or motor oil, it will slowly seep into the concrete itself.

There is one way to prevent that and that is having your concrete sealed and have that done once a year. What that does is it is sort of like a clear nail polish, it puts a coating on top of the concrete which makes it impenetrable to liquid items such as motor oil or other stains that may spill on there. If such items were to spill on there with the sealer on there, all you would have to do is simply hose it off and it comes right off without staining the concrete.
