Comparative Summary

Few shower enclosure companies earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can also claim eight decades of industry experience, but that’s exactly the case for California Shower Door Corporation. “We’ve been in business since 1935, which is a testament to our commitment to excellence,” says CEO Thomas Nolan. “It takes a high level of expertise and dedication to customer service to maintain a good reputation for that amount of time, so that’s something we’re very proud of.”

California Shower Door Corporation provides all types of bathtub and shower enclosures for residential clients throughout the Bay Area. The company can design shower enclosure systems to maximize space and suit any area; provide materials on a will-call basis; perform standard and custom installations; and install mirrors, guardrails, windscreens, interior glazing systems, glass countertops and railing systems, and more.

Unlike shower enclosure companies that hire inexperienced workers who lack professional motivation, California Shower Door Corporation’s status as an employee-owned and operated firm means its technicians have a vested interest in ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction. “Everyone who works here is on the same page about making sure the business is successful,” says Mr. Nolan. “Ultimately, our job is to provide positive experiences for our customers, and that’s exactly what we do.”

Another distinguishing attribute of California Shower Door Corporation is its involvement with several leading industry organizations, including the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). “As a member of these groups, we’re able to further establish ourselves as a company that’s fully committed to excellence,” says Mr. Nolan. “Our clients really like that we promote high professional standards in every aspect of our operations.”

Industry Info

If you’re taking on a bathroom remodeling project, make sure you’re aware of all your customization options. Most industries are prone to changing over time, particularly as technological innovations take place. However, another way in which industries develop is more philosophical in nature. According to Thomas Nolan, CEO of California Shower Door Corporation in San Francisco, such a change has gradually come about in the bathroom remodeling business. “Our industry has undergone a significant philosophical shift over the last 25 years,” he says. “Whereas consumers were once told, ‘This is what we have to offer, so create your space based on the specifications that are available,’ the new approach says, ‘If you can envision it, we can make it happen.’ Everything has become more geared toward customization and conforming to consumers’ desires.”

Mr. Nolan gives an example of this new approach in action: “A while back, we were installing a steam enclosure for the shower in a master bathroom. With a steam enclosure, the glass has to go the full height of the room in order to create an enclosed area to hold in the steam. In the case of this particular job, the ceiling above the shower was sloped downward, which brought a concern that the shower door would hit it as it opened. In the end, we solved the problem by putting a transom above the door, which made the door lower than the ceiling and allowed it to open inward and outward without hitting anything.”

Mr. Nolan says his company’s willingness to work around the customer’s needs reflects a thoroughly contemporary attitude in the bathroom remodeling industry. “If this had happened 25 years ago, the customer would have been told, ‘In order for us to do this, we have to rip out your ceiling.’ In contrast, today they’re told, ‘It’s not a problem at all. We’ll find a way to make it work for you.’”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my project?

A: If it’s a shower door project, we can usually finish in five to seven days. A glass guardrail project can take three to four weeks because there are more materials and setup involved.

Q: Do you perform your own installations?

A: Yes. Unlike many companies that delegate their jobs to subcontractors, we keep everything in-house.

Q: What’s the advantage of working with a contractor that does its own installations?

A: Primarily, it provides you with a single point of contact throughout your entire project. When you use subcontractors for different parts of the job, communication can get messy, so if an issue arises, it can make for a complicated situation. Since we handle every aspect, it really simplifies things for our clients.

Q: Do you have a showroom?

A: Yes, we have a 7,500-square-foot warehouse and showroom in San Francisco—it’s in the Hunters Point Commercial Drydock Historic District, and it features 18 working displays.

Tom Nolan: Only in America

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — When Tom Nolan started working at California Shower Door Corporation as a teenager, the last thing he expected was to one day be its president and CEO. “It’s one of those ‘only in America’ stories, where the kid who starts out sweeping the floors winds up owning the company,” he says. “It began as a summer job during high school, and I continued part-time through college while I earned my master’s degree in psychology. After graduating, my intention was to become a teacher, but unfortunately there weren’t any full-time teaching jobs available. Thankfully, the company owner offered me an opportunity to run the business until I found a teaching position. Twenty-five years later, I’m still here.”

When asked his favorite part about his job, Tom gives a twofold response. “First, I enjoy interacting with our team members, who are wonderful employees and even better human beings. Second, I like being a problem-solver for our clients. From the beginning of California Shower Door’s history in 1935 to now, we’ve been innovators in every aspect of what we do, pushing the possibilities for installation and design, so that’s something I take a lot of pride in.”

A native resident of San Francisco (where he lives with his wife, Monica, and their children, Patrick and Malena), Tom express his appreciation for the diverse character of the City by the Bay. “There’s no place like San Francisco, especially in terms of sheer diversity—there’s something for just about everyone. I’m very proud to call myself a native San Franciscan.”

Outside of work, Tom spends his free time on a number of active pastimes. “My two main hobbies are playing guitar and reading,” he says. “I started playing guitar when I was a teenager, and it’s something I still enjoy today. I also love going to the beach and traveling with my family.”

In his life and career, Tom espouses the virtues of the Golden Rule. “I just try to treat others the way I would like to be treated,” he affirms. “In regard to our business, this means treating both our clients and employees with respect and consideration. It’s a pretty simple philosophy, but it’s effective.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Tom says he would do more of the things he currently enjoys, especially traveling. “At this point in my life, I don’t have the chance to travel much, other than vacations to Hawaii, so I’d take the opportunity to visit Europe and other parts of the world.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite book?
A: “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho.

Q: Music or talk radio?
A: Music. I went through a talk radio phase, but as I’ve gotten older and hopefully a bit wiser, I’ve grown tired of all the banter.

Q: What were you most known for in high school?
A: Playing the guitar. I played in a band from age 14 until I was about 21.

Q: Who’s your all-time favorite guitar player?
A: Jimi Hendrix.

Q: If you could immediately master any musical instrument, what would you choose?
A: Clarinet, because I love traditional New Orleans jazz.

  • Protecting Your Shower Doors

SAN FRANCISCO — One of the most common complaints regarding shower doors is the difficulty involved in keeping them clean. Most people don’t realize there’s a reason this is so difficult: Glass is porous, just like our skin. When the pores in a glass shower door are compromised by contaminants, it makes the glass harder to clean and leads to issues with corrosion and water stains.

Fortunately, there are products that address the difficulty of maintaining shower doors. One is called “Diamond Seal,” a polymer coating that’s applied to the interior of the shower glass. Diamond Seal gets into the pores of the glass so contaminants can’t, which makes cleaning easier and less frequent and consequently helps prevent water stains.

While Diamond Seal can protect your existing shower door against contamination, if you’re installing a new shower door, it’s worthwhile to consider ShowerGuard® glass. Similarly to Diamond Seal, ShowerGuard protects against contamination, but instead of being a liquid solution that’s applied externally, the formula is actually baked onto the glass itself to provide permanent protection against corrosion and staining.

  • Video: Sealing Your Shower Door

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re having difficulty keeping your shower door clean, you’ll be glad to know there’s a product that makes this easier. Today we’re in San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Tom Nolan of California Shower Door Corporation to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Tom Nolan: Today’s tip is a surface protectorant for glass. One of the most common complaints of clients regarding shower doors is the inability to keep the shower doors clean. There is a surface protectorant that we offer, by the name of “Diamond Seal,” that is a polymer coating that we apply to the interior of the glass to seal the pores of the glass in order to minimize cleaning. Most people don’t realize that glass is porous like our skin. So, if the pores of the glass are compromised by contaminants, you won’t be able to clean the glass very well.

Diamond Seal gets into the pores of the glass so that contaminants cannot, making the cleaning of the glass easier and not as often, and most importantly, without a lot of elbow grease. We recommend using Diamond Seal to the interior surface of your glass to aid in the cleaning process.

My shower doors are very unique and hard to find. They are the only place that could get them for me. Other stores just want you to buy what is in their showroom and won't do a special order. They went out of their way to get what I was looking for. They also came out 2 other times after the doors were installed just to do a minor tweak adjustment at no additional charge.
