Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for HVAC companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Certified Heating and Air Conditioning, the most effective way to keep clients happy is to provide them with holistic, energy-efficient solutions to their issues. “We don’t just look at things from an HVAC or solar point of view—we look at the big picture and take a multidisciplinary, whole-house approach,” explains CEO Bryan Arlaud. “By considering a variety of aspects, we’re able to offset and even eliminate our customers’ heating and cooling bills.”

Certified Heating and Air Conditioning has been providing HVAC and solar services for residential clients throughout the Bay Area since 2016. The company has the in-house capabilities to work on everything from furnaces and air conditioners to photovoltaic solar energy systems, and it also offers a maintenance program that includes benefits like bi-annual HVAC system maintenance, priority booking, and discounts on repairs and replacements.

Unlike HVAC contractors that limit their service hours, Certified Heating and Air Conditioning is available 24/7 to handle emergency situations. “We’re always there for our clients, even if it’s 2am or Christmas Eve,” affirms Mr. Arlaud. “Some contractors give ‘tail light warranties,’ which means as soon as their tail lights are out of sight, they can’t be reached, but we always answer the phone because we want to build long-term relationships with our customers.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Certified Heating and Air Conditioning is its commitment to providing ongoing education for its employees. “Our technicians do multiple trainings each week to learn about the latest products and methods available,” says Mr. Arlaud. “This consistent training allows us to stay on the cutting edge of our industry and offer the best possible service to our clients.”

Industry Info

Thanks to a recent innovation, homeowners can now use smart technology to improve indoor air quality.

Smart technology is all the rage nowadays, with applications that automate everything from lights and window shades to door locks and thermostats. According to Brian Arlaud, CEO of Certified Heating and Air Conditioning in Concord, there are also emerging applications that help improve indoor air quality (IAQ). “A lot of smart technology applications help save energy, but IAQ applications can actually change people’s lives,” he asserts. “By monitoring indoor air quality and responding when that quality diminishes, these applications make the home a safer, healthier place.”

As Mr. Arlaud explains, it doesn’t take much to compromise indoor air quality, which is why many homes’ IAQ is worse than homeowners realize. “Every time an exterior door or window in your home opens, it lets in whatever is in the air, whether allergens, chemicals or viruses. When that door or window closes, everything that just entered your home gets trapped inside. Furthermore, many homes contain traces of volatile organic compounds that are off-gassed from things like furniture and house paint, which also get trapped in the home. So, the homeowners are breathing in all of this stuff, which can have some real health detriments.”

Mr. Arlaud says smart IAQ applications can counteract the effects of air contamination. “If these applications sense a dip in air quality, they’ll take measures to bring that level back up. They may turn on the furnace’s blower motor to recirculate air through the filtration system, which will capture the airborne contaminants. In some cases, the system may opt to actively clean the air to remove some of the viruses and other harmful particulates floating around.”

Mr. Arlaud says these IAQ applications are especially advantageous for those with severe allergies or respiratory issues. “Besides making the home environment safer and cleaner, the fact that they’re automated means homeowners can spend less time worrying about indoor air quality and more time enjoying life.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you come out and start my job?
A: It depends on the time of year. During the more temperate seasons, we can usually come out within a day or two, but in winter and summer, we’re often booked two or three weeks in advance due to increased demand. To ensure prompt service, we recommend scheduling preventative maintenance and other non-emergency services during the fall or spring when it’s not as busy.

Q: Are your technicians punctual?
A: Yes. Our ‘on-time promise’ guarantees we’ll be at your appointment within a designated two-hour window. If we don’t arrive within that window, you don’t pay for the service.

Q: Do you offer a maintenance program?
A: Yes, and it gives members a lot of benefits. We’ll come out and service your furnace before winter and your air conditioner before summer to make sure they’re good to go. We also offer a program that includes solar, in which case we’ll come out four times a year to service both your HVAC equipment and solar equipment. We’ll clean the panels, inspect the electrical components and make sure your system is performing as it should be. With these ongoing maintenance services, you can be sure to get the maximum performance for your investment.

Q: Why should I pay for preventative maintenance?
A: Just like your car, your HVAC system requires ongoing maintenance in order to continue performing optimally. Not servicing your HVAC system is like not changing the oil in your car—eventually it’s going to break down. In contrast, having your system serviced on an annual basis will maximize its lifespan, which will save you money in the long run.

Bryan Arlaud: Customer-Focused

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CONCORD — From the early days of his HVAC career, Bryan Arlaud stood out among his professional peers thanks to a singular focus. “I’ve always been the best in whatever department I worked in, and that’s because I was always focused on the customer experience and building relationships,” he explains. “There were a couple of companies I worked for where the owners didn’t really care—it was all about the money. That was a big motivator for me to start my own company, because I’d be able to treat customers as well as I thought they should be.”

Bryan’s involvement in the HVAC industry started early. “My grandpa was in HVAC and so was my father, so that’s pretty much how I got into it,” he says. “My first job was working for a friend of my dad who owned a sheet metal shop. I started at the bottom of the ladder, sweeping floors and cleaning toilets, and worked my way up from there.” Over the next 20 years, Bryan gained further experience working for several different HVAC companies before he started his own business in 2016.

Today, as owner of Certified Heating and Air Conditioning, Bryan says his favorite part of his job is cultivating his team. “I like watching my employees grow, set goals and achieve new milestones. I have one who’s getting ready to buy his first house—he’s never been in a position to do so, but from working here and learning the trade, he’s been able to grow to a point where he can provide a home for his family. It’s very rewarding to be a part of that.”

A resident of Brentwood (where he lives with his wife, Kristina, and their two children), Bryan spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “We’re a very outdoorsy family,” he says. “We do a lot of hunting, camping and boating, and my oldest is really into competitive trap shooting.” Bryan also devotes time to being involved in youth sports. “I coach youth football, which is a lot of fun. I love working with kids and being a positive influence for them at a young age.”

In his life and career, Bryan espouses the value of setting goals. “I’m very goal-oriented, both in my personal and professional life,” he explains. “I tell my kids, ‘If there’s something you want to achieve, set a goal for yourself and find a way to achieve it.’ I encourage my employees in the same way. I find that setting goals is powerful because it helps you change your mindset and envision your future differently. The mind is more powerful than most people realize, and eventually, if you put in the work, the future you envision will become reality.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Bryan says he’d get into public speaking. “I’d like to help other people by sharing my story and the things I’ve been able to achieve. The path I started on as a young man wasn’t a very good one, and I was fortunate to have a number of mentors in my life who helped me get to where I am today. There are a lot of people who are in similar situations and need guidance to find a better path, and I would love to be the person who helps them get there.”

  • How to Save Big on Heating and Cooling Costs

CONCORD — If your HVAC system is more than eight years old, it likely constitutes the lion’s share of your home’s energy consumption. In fact, it’s common for heating and cooling to represent more than half of a home’s total energy costs. As a result, you may be overpaying for comfort—or, worse still, be unable to afford it. In either case, you’ll be glad to know there are options for improving your situation.

One option is to replace your old HVAC system with a newer, more energy-efficient model. During the last decade, California’s ever-tightening energy efficiency regulations have spurred HVAC manufacturers to improve their technology, which has resulted in systems that operate up to and above 90 percent efficiency. For this reason, replacing your outdated system with a modern one could put quite a dent in your monthly utility bills.

If you really want to slash your heating and cooling costs, consider switching from a gas-powered HVAC system to an electric one. “But I thought electricity was more expensive than gas,” you might be thinking. True, but there’s one more element to this cost-cutting strategy: solar power. By incorporating solar power and converting your HVAC system to electric, you stand to save big. Since you’ll be generating your own sun-powered electricity, your system will cost next to nothing to run. Considering the hundreds of dollars you currently spend each month to heat and cool your home, it’s obvious what a game changer this can be. Essentially, instead of paying PG&E to be uncomfortable in your home, you can start paying yourself and maximize your comfort in the process.

    Complete Video Transcription

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: Before purchasing a new heating and cooling system, make sure you’re getting the latest and greatest industry technology. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Bryan Arlaud of Certified Heating and Air Conditioning to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Bryan Arlaud: One of the big things that is changing in the industry today is that many people are used to a gas-fired furnace that uses not only electricity, but also fuel to heat the home. You get those in two different versions. You can get it at 80% efficient or 90 and above percent efficient.

The big change is coming in where we are starting to heat and cool homes with electricity, so we’re not using fuel anymore to heat the house. We’re generating it from the solar system that back-feeds into the system. Then we can heat and cool the house so that you can stay comfortable.

Whenever you have someone come out to talk to you about new equipment, make sure to get all the options so that you’re not just getting older technology. Make sure you’re getting something that’s going to save you energy and headaches down the road with paying for higher utility bills.
