Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for plumbing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Chosen Rooter & Plumbing, Inc., keeping customers happy comes down to one key factor: its ability to take on problems that other plumbers can’t solve. “We love finding issues that other companies have misdiagnosed or missed altogether,” affirms owner Daniel Tseyref. “Many of our customers expect their plumbing repairs to cost thousands of dollars, so they’re very relieved when we’re able to diagnose the problem and fix it for much less than they originally thought.”

Chosen Rooter & Plumbing has been providing plumbing services for residential and commercial clients throughout San Francisco since 2019. The company has the in-house capabilities to handle everything from routine maintenance and installations to specialized jobs like gas and water line repairs, and it’s also qualified to install customized plumbing systems for remodeling projects.

Unlike plumbing companies that work based on commission and often try to sell their clients unnecessary repairs, Chosen Rooter & Plumbing focuses on solving the problem at hand and educating its customers so they can avoid similar issues in the future. “Each of our technicians is on our payroll and doesn’t work for commission, so they’re invested in problem solving, not upselling,” says Mr. Tseyref. “Our customers trust that our main priority is fixing or diagnosing their plumbing systems as accurately as possible, and they really appreciate that.”

Ultimately, Mr. Tseyref sees Chosen Rooter & Plumbing’s distinctive approach to plumbing work as its most important attribute. “We look at plumbing like an art form, so our work doesn’t just have to operate correctly for years to come—it has to look good as well,” he explains. “Whenever someone looks at one of our repairs, it should be immediately obvious that it was performed by a trained professional who really loves their job.”

Industry Info

If you have a recurrently clogged drain in your home, it’s important to find a permanent solution.

When a sink drain in your home gets clogged, your first instinct might be to use a liquid drain-clearing product such as Drano® or Liquid-Plumr®. After all, buying one of these products is a lot less expensive than calling a service technician. However, some of these products have been shown to damage pipes, so what should you do?

While professionals disagree on just how detrimental drain cleaning products are to a home’s pipes, one important factor to consider is the frequency of use. Using Drano for a one-time clog won’t hurt your pipes, but if it becomes a recurrent problem, continually pouring chemicals down your drain may start to have a detrimental effect. In this case, you’ll want to seek a more permanent solution, which may require professional assistance.

To clear a clogged drain, a service technician can employ a couple of different solutions. The first attempt will typically involve the use of a snake: a tool that sends a metal cable (with an auger or blades attached) down the pipeline, which clears out anything in its way. A snake will remove most obstructions, but since it doesn’t thoroughly clean pipes, it may only offer a temporary solution to severe blockage issues.

If necessary, your technician may employ a method called hydro jetting, which utilizes high-pressure water to literally blast the pipes with a powerful stream. However, before implementing this measure, the technician should inspect your piping with an in-line camera to determine if there’s any damage. If your pipes show signs of frailty, hydro jetting could actually make the damage worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How quickly can you start my job?

A: It depends on the type of service you need. If it’s a plumbing emergency, we’ll address it right away. Non-emergency services and installations are usually scheduled a day or two in advance.

Q: How do you charge?

A: We charge based on the job, so whether your repair takes five minutes or an hour, you’ll pay the same amount. We’re as transparent as possible when it comes to our estimates, and with COVID, we know many of our customers don’t want a lot of people coming in and out of their homes, so we’ll work with you to get you a price before work begins.

Q: Can you help me even if I’m on a budget?

A: Yes. We believe everyone deserves to have a good plumber regardless of their budget. That’s why we run our company like we do. Every technician is on our payroll and doesn’t work for commission, so they’re not interested in selling you things you don’t need. That’s what makes us different—we do what needs to be done for every customer and make sure they’re completely satisfied with our work.

Q: Do you provide any warranties?

A: Yes, we provide a 30-day warranty on our labor, although we may give longer warranties depending on the job.

Daniel Tseyref: Unlocking Potential

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — For years, Daniel Tseyref rebuffed offers to get into the plumbing business, but when he finally gave it a try, he unlocked an unknown potential that altered his professional trajectory. “Before getting into plumbing, I worked at a car dealership for 10 years,” he recounts. “My brother was a plumber, and for years he kept trying to talk me into joining him. I was pretty adamant about not doing it. I didn’t know if I would like it, and moreover, I wasn’t sure I’d be any good at it. Eventually, he wore me down and I agreed to try it. Come to find out, I was actually pretty good at it! Plumbing requires a mechanical mind, and I never knew I had one until I gave it a shot.”

After working in the plumbing industry for seven years, Daniel took the big step of starting his own business. Today, as owner of Chosen Rooter & Plumbing, Inc., he says his favorite part of his job is bringing relief to stressed customers. “I get a lot of calls from customers who have already talked to other plumbers and want another opinion. In many cases, I’m able to provide a simpler and less expensive solution than what was quoted by the previous plumber. I love to see the relief on a customer’s face when I tell them I can solve their problem quicker and more affordably than they had expected.”

A resident of San Francisco (where he lives with his wife, Sarah, and their four children), Daniel spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I read a lot, especially nonfiction books,” he details. “I’m also a DJ and I enjoy doing live sets at dance parties for friends.” Daniel also devotes time to practicing his faith. “We’re an observant Jewish family, so we read the Torah and observe Shabbat on Saturdays.”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Daniel says his mission is to challenge the status quo in the plumbing industry. “When I was in car sales, I didn’t use any of the tricks and gimmicks car salespeople are known for; instead, I took an honest, upfront approach. I knew if I did things the right way, I would succeed—I didn’t need to manipulate people to be successful. Today, I run my company by the same principles. Most plumbing companies pay their employees by commission, which motivates them to upsell customers on unnecessary things. In contrast, I pay my employees a straight salary, so they’re motivated to do a good job and make our customers happy.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Daniel says he’d go to Jerusalem. “As an observant Jew, I’ve always wanted to visit Jerusalem. I haven’t been able to take much time off while running my business, so if I retired, I would definitely start planning that trip.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first job?
A: Back in Ukraine, when I was 12 years old, my first job was washing car windshields at a stoplight.

Q: What’s your favorite book?
A: My favorite book is the Torah, and my second favorite is “Born to Win” by Zig Ziglar.

Q: What’s your favorite type of food?
A: Sushi.

Q: Music or talk radio?
A: Music.

Q: What’s your favorite type of music?
A: Dance music, especially trance.

  • Identifying and Resolving Toilet Leaks

SAN FRANCISCO — Toilet leaks waste water and money, but they aren’t always easy to identify. In fact, many households have leaky toilets that perpetually go unnoticed. The good news is this problem can usually be fixed quite easily. However, before you can fix it, you need to know if there’s a problem to begin with. That’s why it’s wise to test your toilets for leaks on a regular basis.

Testing a toilet for leaks requires almost no effort. All you have to do is insert a few drops of liquid dye or food coloring into the toilet’s tank. Come back in a couple of hours and look in the bowl—if you see color in the water, it means water is leaking from the tank into the bowl.

Typically, this type of leak is caused by an old flapper that’s no longer creating a tight seal. To fix it, simply purchase a new flapper at your local hardware store and replace the old one. Just make sure you get the correct type of flapper for your toilet—in fact, you may want to take the old one with you to the store to confirm it’s the correct type. In this case, you’ll need to turn off water to the toilet using the shut-off valve on the wall. After installing the new flapper, turn the valve back on and you should be all set.

  • Video: How to Test for Toilet Leaks

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN FRANCISCO — Daniel Tseyref: Every household has toilets. And as we know, the more you use something, the more it wears and tears and potentially it will have problems. So, I’d like to share with you how to fix a constantly running toilet. It is so easy that even I can do it.

What you want to do is you want to put a dye liquid, or they have tablets they sell at any hardware store. It calls the dye test. It’s – essentially what it is, it’s a food coloring dye. All you need to do roughly approximately once a year, just put few drops into your tank and you will see discoloration in your toilet bowl. When you do see discoloration, that’s when you know, you have a constantly running toilet, which will get your water bill extremely high. All you need to do at your local hardware store, you replace a toilet flapper. And as I mentioned earlier, it is so simple and easy even I can do it.
