Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Classic Shades Painting Co., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: approach every job with equal parts professionalism and friendliness. “We’re known not only for the quality of our workmanship, but also for the way we treat our customers,” says owner Yefim Skomorovsky. “We take the time to develop positive relationships with them, and we always follow through on our promises. If we say we’re going to start working on a certain date, we’ll be there.”

Classic Shades Painting has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential and commercial clients through¬out the Bay Area since 1985. The company’s full-service approach allows it to handle every step of its customers’ projects, from offering color consulta¬tions and preparing surfaces to applying a wide variety of coatings and finishes.

Unlike less experienced painting companies that undervalue the importance of keeping their clients informed about certain aspects of their projects, Classic Shades Painting emphasizes clear communication throughout every step of the painting process. “We make sure our clients know what’s going on with their projects and understand exactly what they’re paying for,” says Mr. Skomorovsky. “One thing we do is take a photo whenever a decision needs to be made and immediately email it to the client. If we need to talk about color placement or some dry rot is discovered, for example, a picture will communicate much more than words.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Classic Shades Painting is its dedication to jobsite cleanliness, which Mr. Skomorovsky says is important for earning clients’ trust and respect. “One thing we’ve learned over the past 30 years is to always be respectful of our customers’ homes and businesses. When a client gets home, they don’t want to be navigating through piles of trash and equipment.”

Industry Info

When undertaking a painting project, don’t underestimate the importance of preparation. Surface preparation is the best way to maximize the durability of any paint job, but the results of your work can quickly be obscured after the first coat of paint is applied, which means you often won’t know if a subpar job was done until you start noticing premature paint failure. “Preparation is definitely the most important part of painting,” says Yefim Skomorovsky, owner of Classic Shades Painting Co. in San Francisco. “If you take shortcuts, your paint job won’t last.” Before you start painting any surface, consider the following preparation tips:

The first step
Examine the surface and check for dirt, faded or peeling paint, cracks, mildew, nail stains and general structural problems. If you find loose paint, try to remove as much of it as possible.

Remove deposits
Wash the surface with a commercial cleaner or detergent solution. After you’re done, thoroughly rinse the surface and let it dry. Power washing is a fast, effective method of removing dirt, oil, grease and other deposits.

Splits and cracks
Inspect the surface for any openings that could potentially let in water. If you find one, seal it up with a paintable acrylic caulk. After that, you can apply primer over the caulked area.

Old nails
If you find any loose or rusty nails, punch them in slightly below the surface, use a corrosion-resistant primer to prime the nail heads and then fill the holes with epoxy compound.

Previously coated surfaces
If you’re unsure about your surface’s ability to be recoated, have a professional painter use a test patch with the coating to check the compatibility of previously painted surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start working on my painting project?

A: It depends on our workload. If we can’t accommodate your scheduling needs, we’ll refer you to a reliable painter who has better availability. Of course, we’d prefer not to do that, but we’ve done so many times in the past because, ultimately, the needs of our clients are more important.

Q: Do you adhere to a specific painting process?

A: Every job varies in terms of techniques, paints and materials, but our owner, Yefim Skomorovsky, always meets with our clients before work begins to make sure everyone understands exactly what needs to be done. The foreman takes over from there, but Mr. Skomorovsky frequently checks every jobsite to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Q: Can you help me decide which color I should paint my house?

A: Yes, we can advise you on which colors will work best for your particular situation. As a general rule, you should avoid dark colors on exteriors—they absorb more heat than lighter colors, which can lead to cracking and paint failure. In terms of interiors, a light, warm color may work best in a room that doesn’t get much direct sunlight.

Q: Are your crew members experienced?

A: Yes, our crews are comprised solely of journeyman painters. Determining experience can be difficult because there aren’t any formal apprenticeships for painting, but we implement a rigorous screening process that tests each potential employee’s ability to paint. After 30 years in the business, we can tell if someone is a good painter just by watching them make a couple brush strokes.

Q: Do you charge for estimates?

A: No, our estimates are free.

Q: Do I have to remove all the furniture from a room before you start painting?

A: No, we’ll cover all your furniture so it’s protected from paint. The only thing we’ll ask you to remove is small, delicate items.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Yefim Skomorovsky

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Yefim Skomorovsky is a 36-year veteran of the painting industry and owner of Classic Shades Painting Co., a Diamond Certified company since 2013. He can be reached at (415) 529-6958 or by email.

Yefim Skomorovsky: A Broader Perspective

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — Born and raised in Ukraine, Yefim Skomorovsky moved to the United States shortly after reaching adulthood. Nearly 30 years later, he says living in two different parts of the world has given him a broader perspective not only in life, but in his career as well. “I enrolled in a painting apprenticeship when I was 14 years old, and after it was over I began working full-time in the industry,” he remembers. “When I was 18, I moved with my family to the U.S., where I got into another painting apprenticeship. I think being formally trained in both European and American painting methods has given me an advantage in terms of knowledge and perspective.”

Today, as owner of Classic Shades Painting Co., Yefim says his favorite part of his job is making customers happy. “I make sure my clients get what they pay for and are truly satisfied with the results. I always give 110 percent, and that effort pays off in the form of high customer satisfaction.”

As a resident of San Francisco (where he lives with his wife, Natasha, and their children, Brianna and Michael), Yefim spends much of his free time enjoying the diverse environments that comprise his local setting. “My family and I love living in the city and exploring different neighborhoods,” he affirms. “However, we also enjoy outdoor activities like camping and fishing. Being in the Bay Area, we’re lucky enough to have both.”

In regard to his professional career, Yefim espouses the importance of customer service. “I was fortunate to recognize many years ago that customer service is the key to a successful business,” he says. “A lot of people can paint, but being able to deliver both a quality job and a positive experience for the customer…that’s an art form. I’m at a point in my career where that’s my main focus.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Yefim says he’d take his family on an extended road trip. “I’ve already done a fair amount of traveling abroad, so I’d like to see more of the United States. It’s a beautiful country, and there are many places I haven’t been yet.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What kinds of books do you like to read?
A: Much of what I read is business-related. I’m interested in learning new things that I can apply to my business. For example, I just read a book about search engine optimization.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: The future, just to see what things are like and if we actually start colonizing other planets.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Hang out at home with my family.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Ella’s in San Francisco.

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: I get tired of the standard stuff, so I like it when they’re prepared in a unique way because it’s a different experience.

  • How to Create a Color Scheme for Your Home

SAN FRANCISCO — One of the most challenging aspects of a home painting project is choosing the right colors. Since the color scheme you select is something you’re going to live with for a long time, you should give it plenty of consideration.

The first thing you’ll need to do is choose your main color, which will serve as the basis for your larger color scheme. To get the ball rolling, look in your closet; if you’re like most people, your wardrobe reflects the colors you like, so it’s a natural place to start.

A common method for building a color scheme is known as “monochromatic,” with “mono” denoting “one” and “chromatic” referring to color. Essentially, a monochromatic color scheme consists of varying shades of a single hue. For instance, if you were implementing a monochromatic color scheme in your home, you might pick a light blue for your wall color and a darker shade of blue for your trim.

One way to spice up a monochromatic color scheme is to introduce a complementary color—a totally different color that pairs nicely with your main hue. The best way to find a complementary color is to use a color wheel, which you can get at any paint or hardware store (you can also find an image online). While complementary colors can enhance the visual appeal of your home’s paint job, keep in mind that it’s best to use these sparingly, like painting window trim or a door.

  • Video: Creating a Color Scheme

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: One of the most important aspects of painting your home is choosing a color scheme you’ll enjoy looking at for many years. Today we’re in San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Yefim Skomorovsky to learn how this is done.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Yefim Skomorovsky: As a painting contractor I deal with a lot of people who have difficulty deciding what color they’re going to use. And that’s understandable. It’s a decision they’re going to have to live with a long time. Well, I start building a color scheme from a main color. And by that I mean the color of the body of the house, or main walls. Okay, now the color you like, would you like for your main color? I don’t know. You’re going to have to answer that question.

One good way of doing that is looking inside of your closet. See what colors you like, and what colors you see there. Now, I happen to like green. So, here’s a green palette. Now, a good way to build a color scheme, is to do a – Use what we know in the industry as a ‘monochromatic color scheme’. ‘Mono’ stands for single, or one. So, let me just say that we’re going to use this color as the main color, as the body of our house. Well, a good way to create a pleasing combination would be to, say, use a color here for the trim of your house.

But if you want to spice things up, for example, we can introduce, and often do, introduce what’s known as a complementary color. And how do you find a complementary color? Well, we use a color wheel. Here’s a color wheel that has all the main colors here. And let’s just say, let’s find the color of green. Here it is. Here’s our green, and the direct opposite of it would be right here. And that’s color red. Okay. So let’s go back to our color building tool. And let’s introduce like, let’s just say, this red. Here’s a red. Perhaps you want to paint this the color of your front door, or maybe your window sashes. Do not go overboard. Use it sparingly. Good luck to you!
