Company Philosophy

“Our motto is, ‘Reputation before profits,’ and that’s the mindset we have on every job. While other companies focus solely on profits, we believe in providing good, old-fashioned service. When we show up at a customer’s home, they feel more at ease because they know we’re not going to take advantage of them.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for HVAC contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Climate Solutions, the easiest way to keep clients happy is to adhere to its founding principle of honesty throughout every job. “Honesty has always been our guiding tenet—we tell our customers what they really need and don’t oversell them,” says owner Kao Saephanh. “Ultimately, they feel more comfortable because they know we’re not trying to take advantage of them.”

Climate Solutions has been installing and servicing HVAC equipment for residential and commercial clients in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, and San Joaquin Counties since 2015. The company is qualified to work on everything from heating and air conditioning systems to whole house fans and ductless mini-splits, and it also has the training and equipment to repair and replace ductwork.

Unlike HVAC companies whose owners delegate project management responsibilities to less experienced employees, Climate Solutions provides every job with the hands-on expertise of Mr. Saephanh himself. “Our customers know that if they have any questions or concerns, they can come directly to me,” he affirms. “They really like that because they only have to talk to one person to get everything handled. Also, since I perform all the work, I’m able to make sure each job is completed to my high standards for quality.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Climate Solutions is its dedication to quality control, which Mr. Saephanh says is important for ensuring the best possible results. “We always take pictures of the entire job so our customers can see exactly what we’re doing, and we guarantee every repair for five years and every new installation for 10 years so they don’t have to worry about it. If something does happen, they know we’ll be there to take care of it.”

Industry Info

Take advantage of technology interfaces for HVAC systems that keep your home comfortable year-round.

More and more products are incorporating technology tie-ins, and the HVAC industry is no exception. Smart thermostats and HVAC systems are harnessing the power of technology to give homeowners more control and greater comfort. “Modern HVAC systems can basically run by themselves,” says Kao Saephanh, owner of Climate Solutions in Elk Grove. “The computer systems in many models make sure homes are more comfortable than ever. They can lower and increase humidity, customize temperatures, and more.”

Added conveniences like smart thermostats and Wi-Fi-enabled systems have made home comfort adjustable from anywhere. “You can connect your phone to these systems via Wi-Fi and control everything from wherever you are,” affirms Mr. Saephanh. “That’s a big deal if you have pets or go on vacation. You can keep the temperature and humidity set and not have to worry about it while you’re away.”

Check into these smart products for home HVAC systems:

  • Smart HVAC systems can be set to run only when people are in the room, programmed to run at certain times or activated remotely before homeowners return. Occupancy-based systems regulate temperature based on the number of people in the room.
  • Smart vents can be added to existing HVAC systems to control temperatures in individual rooms, catering either to personal preference or the time of day. This can take the place of expensive zone systems and help lower utility bills.
  • Smart systems installed in commercial buildings can learn how much heat or air conditioning is required in certain areas of the building and at what times of day, which keeps employees comfortable and standardizes temperatures throughout the building.
  • Smart sensors in residential and commercial buildings can monitor system functionality for more efficiency.
  • Smart zoning systems keep each room comfortable by accounting for occupancy, weather conditions, features and location (a warm kitchen or inner hallway versus a room with many windows), which keeps occupants more comfortable without wasting resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will you take care of my house while you’re working?

A: Absolutely. We have a lot of respect for our customers’ homes, so we make sure to keep everything clean and undamaged by wearing shoe covers, putting down mats (as well as tarps if we have to enter attics or crawl spaces), and sanitizing all work areas.

Q: Do you recommend or install certain brands of HVAC equipment?

A: We can work on almost any make or model, but we sell and install Amana and American Standard equipment because their warranty coverage is top-notch compared to other manufacturers. A lot of brands offer similar systems with the same parts, so the difference isn’t so much the brand as it is the person who installs your system. As long as you buy quality equipment and hire a quality installer, your system should last for a long time.

Q: Should I consider replacing my old HVAC unit?

A: It depends on how well it’s meeting your needs. If you have a freon system, for example, you may want to consider upgrading it to a new system. Freon is no longer being made, so whatever’s left is all there is—you’ll have to keep refilling at a more expensive rate until you switch over to a new system. Things are always changing in this industry, so it’s never going to get cheaper, but the longer you wait to make changes, the more expensive it’s going to be.

Q: Are there any new HVAC products or technologies that I should know about?

A: There’s a system called Housecall Pro that has been a great help to many of our clients. They can use it to see if we’re on our way to the jobsite and how long we’re going to be there, and it also lets them see pictures of our technicians and emails them a complete invoice. As far as HVAC systems, most of the new models run by themselves because they have computer systems that lower or increase humidity, customize temperatures and more.

Kao Saephanh: Adventures in HVAC

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ELK GROVE — Following high school, Kao Saephanh decided to jump headfirst into a wholly unfamiliar industry. While it was a little scary at first, he soon learned to embrace the adventure. “After high school, I decided to skip community college and go to trade school,” he recounts. “Initially, I wanted to become an auto mechanic, but the sales rep talked me into HVAC. He told me that HVAC techs got to travel to different cities and work in all sorts of different places rather than being stuck inside a garage all day. What he didn’t tell me was they also worked in 120-degree attics and crawl spaces, where there were spiders and dead animals! So, that took some getting used to.”

Hot attics and creepy crawl spaces aside, Kao is happy to report that his vocational venture paid off. “It worked out really well,” he affirms. “Following trade school, I was hired at a local HVAC company, where I added hands-on experience to the knowledge I’d acquired in the classroom. After working for a couple of companies over a five-year span, I decided to branch out and start my own business.”

Today, as owner of Climate Solutions, Kao says his favorite part of his job is the aspect that initially attracted him to the HVAC industry. “My favorite part is the traveling. One day I’m working in Sacramento, the next I might be in El Dorado Hills or San Jose. I also travel to different states for industry training. I really enjoy being on the move, seeing new places and meeting new people.”

A resident of Sacramento, Kao spends most of his time outside of work engaged in his favorite pastime. “My main hobby is fishing, and I do a lot of it,” he says. “Ocean fishing, river fishing, lake fishing…you name it. I have a small fishing boat that I take out most weekends. Ocean fishing is probably my favorite because you never know what you’re going to see out there. I’ve seen orcas, humpback whales and dolphins. I’ve also caught some really interesting things!”

Regarding a professional philosophy, Kao espouses the value of honesty and integrity. “My main philosophy is to always do right by people,” he explains. “Don’t try to do anything shady or hide anything, because everything that’s hidden eventually comes out anyway. At the end of the day, I want to be able to sleep at night. That’s how I like to live my life and run my business, and it has worked out great so far.”

When asked what he would do if he were to retire tomorrow, Kao says he’d become a full-time fisherman. “If I had the money for it, I would buy a really big fishing boat, park it in the Berkeley Marina and go fishing every day. I might just live on the boat.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve caught while fishing?
A: It’s a tie between an eight-foot-long sailfish and a five-foot-long barracuda.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A: Both—I wake up early and stay up late.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Miso Japanese Restaurant in Sacramento.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I collect fishing lures.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Japan.

  • How to Clean an A/C Condenser Unit

ELK GROVE — One simple DIY task you can do to maintain your HVAC equipment is clean your air conditioning system’s outdoor condenser unit. However, before you do this, it’s good to learn how a condenser unit works.

An A/C condenser unit has a fan on the top and a series of thin metal slats (or “fins”) that run along the sides. When your air conditioner is running, the unit draws in air through the fins and pushes it upward through the fan at the top. This functions to cool down the unit, which has hot refrigerant going through the coil at up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Naturally, as the unit draws in air through the fins, it also attracts airborne dirt and debris, which, over time, can clog up the fins and lead to premature failure of the unit. Fortunately, you can prevent this by routinely cleaning the fins. All you need is a garden hose and a spray nozzle attachment.

Set the nozzle attachment for medium pressure and spray the fins from an angle. This will rinse them out and remove any latent dirt and debris. Avoid using the highest pressure setting on your spray nozzle, as this can potentially cause the fins to bend. Go around the unit until all of the fins have been rinsed. By doing this a couple of times each year, you’ll help your condenser unit to continue functioning properly.

Expert video tip
  • Video: How to Clean an A/C Condenser Unit

    Complete Video Transcription

ELK GROVE — Kao Saephanh: Hi, my name is Kao Saephanh, and I kind of want to show you guys how to properly clean a condenser unit. So let me kind of just explain how this thing works. So you have a fan on the top and you have your fan blades here. So, when you’re running your air conditioning system, what it’s doing is it’s drawing air from the sides of the unit and is pushing the air upwards. And the reason why it does that is because when the unit first turns on, well, when the unit turns on, you have a lot of hot refrigerant going through this coil right here, which a lot of people don’t realize the refrigerant’s like up to like 200 degrees. So, what this unit does is it turns on, it sucks the air through the sides to cool down the refrigerant, and it pushes the heat back up this way.

Then what happens, because it’s sucking air through the sides of the unit, you end up drawing a lot of dirt, dust, debris, leaves, whatever’s in the air, and it clogs up these fins on the inside. It’s kind of like… these fins are kind of like your radiator for a car. You don’t want to have a block because if they’re blocked, the system’s not able to breathe properly, and if it’s not able to breathe properly, you have premature failure.

You have these openings right here in the cover that you can spray through. And I’ll show you real quick. This is a simple hose with this, you know, just a regular, you know, spray nozzle. And what I usually do is I’ll set it. You want to make sure you don’t set it on the full pressure and shoot at it at an angle because what’s going to happen is you’re going to cause the fins to bend. And once you cause the fins to bend, it’s not good.

And I’ll spray in here… You can see all that dirt coming out right now. But you don’t need any chemicals or anything like that. I actually prefer not to use chemicals because the chemicals could strip away a lot of the paint on this unit. So, what you’ll do is just spray and make your way around.

Residential systems, the actual coil itself is probably about three inches thick or two inches thick or so you don’t have to use a whole lot of pressure. I personally don’t like to use a whole lot of pressure, just so those spray work perfectly fine.

I have already told my sister about them and that those guys are the greatest.

They came out immediately when my air conditioning went out in the middle of a heat wave. I don't know how he squeezed me in but he did. And then, another part went out later on and he was able to come right back out to fix that part for me too. They get an A+ all around.

We liked him a lot and I have dealt with a lot of HVAC people along the way. I felt that they were very willing to tell us what was going on and took their time to explain things.

I was there for my aunt's appointment, because she is 93 years old, and she doesn't always really understand what is going on with the system. They were really good at explaining to her what was going on with her air conditioning unit, and I could follow what they were saying, because I've had a similar issue happen to mine.
