We're very happy with them. When we had an issue, they came right back to fix it. They actually left us a sample of spray paint for touch-ups on the metal bars, so that when we needed it, we didn't have to buy more spray paint.

When we needed help with another roofing project, which was something they didn't necessarily do because it was too small of a job, they referred us to somebody else.

It was so easy to work with them. They were very reasonable with their estimate, and they weren't pushy. They gave me the pricing of each item exactly. They got it done very quickly, they were pretty straightforward, and I had no issues with them. It was awesome. I would totally recommend them to anybody.

I would say their options and their quality of work are amazing. My roof is not a standard roof. It's more of an open beam ceiling type roof. They were very knowledgeable of our house, and they were able to give me several options regarding the roof. It turned out beautifully. The clean-up was taken care of, and everything was perfect, like they've been doing it for years.

If you want to keep your home cool year-round, consider installing an insulated or cool roof. Most people don’t think about their roofs very often (unless it’s raining), but according to Alex Oceguera, CEO of Cosmos Roofing in Mountain View, they can actually go a long way toward keeping homes more comfortable throughout the year. “A good roofing contractor can add insulation to a new or existing roof to help reduce heat loss during the winter,” he says. “Also, installing an Energy Star-rated cool roof can help reduce heat transfer in the summer.”

Insulation
The right combination of blanket insulation, loose-fill insulation, blown-in insulation, recycled insulation, and other insulating factors can prevent heat loss and transfer. Insulating pipes, rafters, walls, and other areas of the attic and roof underlayment can add to the protection level. While insulation is less important in the temperate Bay Area, it can still make a big impact on heat loss and the absorption of heat through roofs. You should be able to choose the amount of insulation that’s installed with your roof, so talk to your contractor to determine the best product for your specific needs.

Cool roofs
Cool roofing products, particularly those that are Energy Star certified, stop sunlight from heating up roof surfaces, which keeps buildings (up to 50 degrees cooler than traditional roofs). A cooler roof means less heat absorption into the home, which means less need for air conditioning.

Essentially, cool roofs are specially designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than average roofing products. Some are made of reflective tiles and shingles, while others use highly reflective paints or coatings. A few types even have a reflective sheet covering to reflect warming rays.

Alex Oceguera: Raised to Roof

MOUNTAIN VIEW — A second-generation roofer, Alex Oceguera says he was basically raised in the trade. “I put on my first shingle when I was six years old,” he laughs. “My dad and his brothers were all roofers, so it was natural for me to get involved. By age 15, I was working during the summers, and after high school I started roofing full-time. Fortunately, I liked it and was good at it, so it has been a great opportunity and career.”
Today, as CEO of Cosmos Roofing, Alex says his favorite part of his job is the simple satisfaction of making an honest living. “Roofing is just like any other trade or career—what you put into it is what you get out of it. As long as you do good work and take care of your customers, the business will be good to you, and there’s a lot of satisfaction that comes with that.”
A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Beedee, and their three children), Alex appreciates the close-knit character of his local community. “We live in a great neighborhood,” he says. “We do 4th of July block parties and things like that. My kids also belong to a swim club. We’re pretty active in our kids’ schools and just enjoy being part of the community.”
Outside of work, Alex likes to stay active with sports and outdoor activities. “I enjoy mountain biking and exercising at the gym, and I also play in a local softball league,” he says. “My family and I do a lot of camping as well. We’ll go to Lake Del Valle or Don Pedro Lake and spend a few days boating, fishing and jet skiing.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Alex says it’s best to be a straight shooter. “At the end of the day, the buck stops with me, so I make a point of being honest and straightforward. On every job, I make sure everything is done exactly right, even at the risk of losing profit. After all, everything comes back to you at some point, so there’s no use cutting corners—it’s better to do it right the first time.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Alex says he’d see the world. “I’d probably take my family and go traveling. I’ve always wanted to go on an African safari, so maybe we’d start with that.”

When fallen tree leaves, needles and branches aren’t routinely cleaned off of your roof, they’ll accumulate in your valleys, skylights and gutters, which can cause water blockages when it rains. Have a maintenance professional, landscaper or roofer go up on your roof and remove tree debris on a regular basis. This will extend the lifespan of your roof and gutters and prevent expensive damage.
