Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for roofing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Crandall Roofing Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: approach every job with the goal of performing at the top tier of its industry. “Our estimating staff has more than 150 years of combined roofing experience and all of our technicians are factory-certified,” explains General Manager Thomas Carrell. “Our clients know that when they hire us, they’re getting an experienced team of professionals that will deliver high-quality results.”

Crandall Roofing has been installing, replacing, and repairing roofs for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma and Marin Counties since 2006. The company has the training and equipment to work with all types of roofing materials (including metal and premium asphalt), and it’s also qualified to handle large projects like high-rise buildings and shopping centers.

Unlike less experienced roofing companies that lack training in certain aspects of the trade and are forced to limit their services as a result, Crandall Roofing is equipped to take on a wide variety of roofing projects, including those that are too technically difficult for other companies to handle. “There aren’t a lot of companies that can do slate, standing seam metal or metal fabrication onsite, but we’re capable of doing all three,” says Mr. Carrell. “We actually have an entire crew that’s dedicated to handling challenging projects, so regardless of what a client needs, we can provide a solution.”

Another distinguishing feature of Crandall Roofing is its centrally located showroom in Santa Rosa, which allows clients to see practical applications of the products they’re considering and have their questions answered by experienced professionals. “When a customer is able to see exactly what they’re getting before it’s installed, it gives them more confidence,” says Mr. Carrell. “We love helping our clients find the right products to fulfill their needs.”

Industry Info

If you’re planning to install a new roof on your home, consider the benefits of hiring a factory-certified roofing company.
Thanks to industry innovation, today’s roofing products are more durable than ever. However, according to Thomas Carrell, general manager of Crandall Roofing Inc. in Santa Rosa, regardless of a product’s expected longevity, it’s still crucial to have the reassurance of a factory warranty. “Fiberglass composite shingles used to be rated at 30-, 40- and 50-year lifespans, but today, they’re all rated at 50 years,” he explains. “Nonetheless, homeowners need to understand that this rating means almost nothing unless they deal with a factory-certified installer who purchases the extended warranty on their behalf at the time of installation. Only then is the homeowner actually guaranteed the full 50-year warranty on the product through the manufacturer.”

Despite having a 50-year rating, Mr. Carrell says roofing shingles rarely reach this projected milestone. “Most homeowners assume that if they buy 50-year shingles, they won’t need to worry about their roofs again. In reality, almost all types of shingles fail prematurely, so if you don’t have a factory warranty, you’re likely going to be paying for another roof in the future.”

Mr. Carrell says attention to detail is vital for securing your roof’s warranty. “The warranty on your roof is only good if you secure it in writing from the manufacturer, and the only way you can do that is to hire a factory-certified installer who purchases the materials and installs them in exact accordance with their requirements. If there’s a failure and it turns out things weren’t done to their specifications, your warranty will be voided.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does it take to get an estimate?
A: Our bid turnaround time is usually about 72 hours.

Q: How soon can you start my project?
A: It depends on the time of year and how busy we are, but in most cases, we can schedule the job to begin three to four weeks after the initial estimate.

Q: Will you remove my gutters when you replace my roof?
A: No, we’ll work around your gutters, and when we’re done, we’ll make sure they’re completely clean and functional.

Q: Do you replace gutters or skylights?
A: No, but we can bring in a subcontractor to help you with those services if you want to include them in your roofing project.

Q: Do I have to use the same materials that are currently on my roof?
A: You can use new materials as long as they’re compatible with your roof type. There are two basic roof types: flat and steep. If you have a flat roof, you have to stay within the range of flat roof materials; if you have a steep roof, you have to use steep roof materials. Fortunately, there are many options on both sides.

Thomas Carrell: Going for the Goal

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — Besides being a second-generation roofer, Thomas Carrell has always been involved in sports, including a 15-year stint playing semi-pro football. So, when an opportunity arose to purchase the roofing business he worked for, he went for it like a quarterback on third and goal. “My father was a roofer, so I got into the industry when I was a teenager,” he remembers. “I spent the better part of a decade working for him and learning the trade. After I gained enough experience on the installation crew, I took an estimating position with Crandall Roofing. About 15 years later, the owner, Stanley Klaus, was getting ready to retire and offered to sell the company to me. In August 2020, my wife, Cecilia, and I became the new owners of Crandall Roofing.”

The transition from employee to owner is rarely seamless, but Thomas expresses a confident outlook. “Taking over a business is a big challenge, but it’s a challenge I’m up for,” he affirms. “We’ve already implemented some changes to better care for our employees, and we have more plans to improve our overall operations. I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to further the success of this already successful company.”

A resident of Santa Rosa (where he lives with Cecilia and their two children), Thomas spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes, including coaching youth sports. “I coach football at Cardinal Newman and basketball at Sonoma Academy,” he details. “I’m also the athletic director for Redwood PAL.” When he’s not coaching, Thomas likes spending time with his family. “We’re pretty competitive, so game nights are a lot of fun. We also have little competitions like potato sack races at our bigger family gatherings.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Thomas cites the importance of a strong team dynamic. “Sports has always been a secondary theme in my life, so naturally, I tend to look at my business through that lens,” he explains. “My staff is my team, and as their coach, I need to put time and attention toward helping them succeed. Every day we’re practicing, growing and getting better at what we do, and I’m excited to see our progress in the coming years.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Thomas says he’d take some time to get in touch with his roots. “I’ve always been interested in my heritage, and that interest has continued to grow now that I have descendants of my own. So, if I retired tomorrow, I’d probably plan a trip to Ireland and have an adventure tracing my ancestry.”

  • 3 Crucial Aspects of a Fire-Resistant Roof

SANTA ROSA — Fire safety has always been a concern with roofs, but with the recent wildfire crises in California, it’s more important than ever. To ensure your roof is optimally fire-resistant, consider the following aspects:

    Roofing materials

The surest way to maximize a roof’s fire resistance is to use Class A fire-rated materials at the time of installation. Roofing materials are tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and given a rating of A, B or C, with Class A being the most fire-resistant. There are several roofing products available in this class, including shakes and shingles. Additionally, Class B and C roofing materials can typically meet Class A requirements when additional underlayment materials are used. Talk to your roofer about the best option for building a fire-safe roof.

    Ventilation

While ventilation is crucial for the lifespan of your roof, in the event of a wildfire, air movement in and out of the attic can bring in stray embers. To avoid this risk, all roof vents should be fitted with 1/8th-inch wire mesh coverings. Most contemporary houses have louvers on ventilation screens that already meet this requirement. If you’re unsure, ask your roofer to inspect your roof vents for proper protection.

    Gutters

Besides causing clogs when it rains, dry leaves and other debris buildup in rain gutters increase the risk of and contribute to the spread of wildfire. To prevent this, have your gutters cleaned on a routine basis. If there are several trees around your home, you may need to have them cleaned more often (at least twice a year).

  • Video: Roof Fire Safety

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA ROSA — Thomas Carrell: Hi there. Today, we’re talking about roof-related fire safety. And when it comes to products that are installed on your roof, it is a requirement to install Class A fire-rated products. These are a series of tests that the products are put through to ensure that they’re able to withstand fire as best as possible. Some additional requirements as of late are in the areas of wildland-urban interface. One of the requirements is eighth-inch, steel mesh screen installed over your intake and outgassing vents for your attic. Another measure being required by the local building departments is steel mesh gutter screens. This is intended to keep leaves and other debris out of your gutters. If you’re not sure of the condition of your roofing system, contact a licensed roofing contractor to come take a look, give you some peace of mind.
