If you have your hardwood floor refinished on a regular basis, make sure you’re aware of upcoming industry changes. Environmental regulation has led to changes in several industries, and the hardwood flooring business is no exception. Most notably, oil-based hardwood floor finishes are being phased out and replaced by low-VOC, water-based finishes. According to Dan Yorke, owner of Danville Hardwood Company Incorporated, once oil-based finishes become completely phased out, homeowners throughout the Bay Area will likely be affected. “Oil-based finishes can only be used for five more years in Northern California,” he explains. “Since a lot of older, top-nail floors require oil-based finishes, flooring companies are probably going to be replacing a lot more floors in the coming years.”

Mr. Yorke says that despite the safe, environmentally-friendly character of water-based finishes, they may not be compatible with certain styles of hardwood flooring. “Even if a floor has had oil-based finishes in the past, you can still put a water-based finish on it. However, when it comes to older, top-nail floors, water-based finishes are far from ideal. Since it’s a thinner floor that doesn’t have a tongue-and-groove configuration, it has a lot more movement in it. Whereas the elasticity of an oil-based product corresponds well to this characteristic, a water-based finish is a comparatively brittle product and will crack if there’s any movement in the floor. Also, these older floors have hundreds of nails in them, which can get rusted out by the water present in a water-based finish.”

Regardless of its finish, your floor will quickly lose its luster if it’s exposed to water for long periods of time. More serious damage is also possible, including warping, so make sure you wipe up spills as soon as possible with a soft, dry cloth. Start at the edges of the spill and work your way toward the center. Don’t ever mop a sealed or waxed floor, even if the mop is only slightly damp.

DANVILLE — When Dan Yorke decided to expand his carpeting business to include hardwood flooring, he saw it as a lucrative opportunity to benefit from a growing trend. What he didn’t realize, however, is just how challenging the endeavor would prove to be. “I found out that working with hardwood is a lot more complicated than cleaning and installing carpet, which is what I originally planned to focus on when I opened my business,” he recounts. “It proved to be a pretty sharp learning curve, and it took us a few years to get a handle on it.”

Despite the rough initiation, Dan’s business gradually grew to excel at hardwood installation—so much so that he eventually sold the company’s carpeting division. Today, Dan says he’s proud that Danville Hardwood Company Incorporated continues to be one of the East Bay’s most trusted hardwood flooring contractors. “We really shine next to our competitors because many of them simply don’t know what they’re doing. With high-end homes in particular, people want to feel comfortable with a company’s level of knowledge and experience, which is why many local homeowners choose us.”

A longtime resident of Danville, Dan says he appreciates the close-knit character of his local community. “My wife, Laura, and I have many roots in Danville. We raised our three sons here, and I’ve personally served as president of the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce. After many years in business, our company has a lot of appreciation for the support our community continues to give us.”

Outside of work, Dan engages in a variety of hobbies, including salmon fishing and crabbing, gardening, and taking on home improvement projects. When he’s not in a boat or at home, he can often be found enjoying a meal at his favorite local restaurant, Pete’s Brass Rail. In addition to his everyday hobbies and pastimes, Dan likes taking trips to visit his three grown sons, Teddy, Ben and Sam.

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Dan says he’d spend more time both at home and abroad. “I work an awful lot, so my wife and I don’t get out as much as we’d like. Even when I do travel, it’s usually for business. So, if I retired tomorrow, I’d spend more time pursuing some of the activities I enjoy, as well as see some more of the world.”

DANVILLE — When choosing a new wood flooring product for your home, you’ll need to consider several factors to make the right decision. A good starting place is to consider the size and character of your household, as this will inform the criteria on which you’ll base your decision. For example, if you have an “active” household with young children and pets, you’re going to have very different criteria than a retired couple.

One of the most important characteristics to look for in a flooring product is durability. If you have an active household, you’ll want a floor that can stand up to wear—a dense product like oak or maple as opposed to softer wood like poplar or alder. Additionally, you may want to consider a flooring style that will hide marks and other signs of wear, such as a distressed wood floor. Since distressed wood is intentionally given a worn aesthetic, wear and tear will enhance its character rather than diminish it.

Another, more design-centric consideration for hardwood flooring is plank size. The width and length of the flooring planks you choose can have a surprising impact on your home’s visual aspect. Longer planks can add length to your home, while wide planks go well with an open concept floor plan.

In addition to the product itself, you’ll need to choose a finish for your new hardwood floor. There are three different finishes used on hardwood floors: urethane, UV oil and oil-based. DANVILLE — A hardwood floor is a big investment, and the best way to protect that investment is by employing proper care and maintenance. However, just any maintenance won’t do—it needs to be appropriate for the type of floor and, more importantly, the type of finish you have.

There are three major finishes used on hardwood floors: urethane, UV oil and oil-based. Each of these finishes requires a different cleaning product (or set of products). Urethane is the most low-maintenance of the three. For cleaning a urethane-finished floor, Bona® Hardwood Floor Cleaner is a good choice. Simply spray your mophead with the cleaner and wipe the floor clean.

On the other hand, UV oil and oil-based finishes require cleaning products that are compatible with their oil-based composition. To get the best results, choose a kit that includes a natural cleaner safe for oil-based flooring, as well as one or more oil refreshing/rejuvenating products. Scott Peck: Installing hardwood floors is a big investment, so proper care and maintenance are important. Whether you’ve installed a solid hardwood floor or a durable engineered, it’s important to know which cleaning product to use. It’s also important to know which finish was used on your floor. Then you would know which cleaning product to use. We have three different finishes for our floors: urethane, UV oil, and oil-based. All three take a different cleaning product.

If you were to buy a urethane finished floor, we would refer you to our Bona cleaning kit. You would just spray the mophead once and wipe the floor clean. Other oil floors actually require the manufacturer’s cleaning product – while our Provenza, they provide us with a floor care kit and our DuChateau with a maintenance oil kit. This is very important and critical to keeping your floors in proper care and looking their best.

DANVILLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: When choosing a wood flooring product for your home, you need to take several factors into account. To learn more, we’re in Danville with Tyler Zimmerman of Danville Hardwood Company Incorporated, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Dan Yorke.

Tyler Zimmerman: So, you’ve decided that you want some new floors, but you don’t know what to choose. I mean, there’s thousands of different samples at dozens of different price points, so what’s the right floor for you and your family? If you’re a family of five with, you know, two dogs at home versus a retired couple living on their own, you’re going to want to take a lot of different considerations in terms of how you make your decision. For example, you’re going to want to really make a decision between choosing something that functions a certain way versus the – the way a floor might look; the style of the floor. For example, if a floor is really dense versus really soft floor, again, that family of five is going to have a harder time maintaining a good look on a softer floor versus a denser floor.

Likewise, the type of finish that you choose is also going to really be very important. An oil base finish versus a urethane base finish can really have a lasting impact in terms of how you maintain it. And while there’s a little bit more love involved in the oil -oil-based finish on your floor, 25, 30 years down the line it might look just like the day that you had installed it.

Likewise, if you’re going between style and function, distressed floors can have a real kind of impact in terms of how you might make your decision as well. A distressed floor can also look a certain way, but it can also have that added benefit of being able to take a little bit more abuse if you have, you know, dogs, pets, things like that. A floor that’s been distressed has already kind of been given that little bit of added character to it to make it look like it’s been there for 25 or 30 years anyways, so a little bit more wear and tear on it actually even just kind of adds to the overall look of the floor.

So, another thing to consider would be also the plank size. If you have a wide plank versus a narrow plank, it’s going to really emphasize the space and the size of your home much differently. And also, the longer planks can really pull you in the direction of your space. So, if you’re really going for that open concept look, going with something that’s really wide and really long really emphasizes the space – makes everything feel nice and big.

So, at the end of the day, it’s really important that you sit down with your local hardwood floor expert and just make sure that you’re taking all these things into consideration when you’re choosing the right floor for you.
