“We strive to maintain lasting relationships with our clients—their satisfaction is important to us, and we want them to know they can depend on us to be there whenever they have heating, cooling or air quality needs. Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for HVAC contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Degree HVAC, Inc., the key to keeping a satisfied customer base is providing the kind of workmanship and service that generates natural growth. “We aren’t big on advertising; we prefer to let our customers speak for us,” says Controller Christina Lazzarini. “Our growth over the past 10 years has been primarily driven by word of mouth, which shows the impact customer satisfaction can have.”

Degree HVAC has been providing HVAC and plumbing services for residential, commercial, and industrial clients throughout San Mateo County since 2005. The company has the training and equipment to repair and install all types of heating, air conditioning, and plumbing systems, and it offers numerous products and services that are designed to improve indoor air quality through contaminant removal and humidity control.

Unlike HVAC contractors that hire inexperienced technicians in an effort to minimize their operating costs, Degree HVAC goes to the extra mile to ensure its technicians are thoroughly trained. “As both union and SMACNA members, we’re accountable for keeping our technicians at the top of their game,” affirms Ms. Lazzarini. “By making training a top priority, we can ensure our team members have above-average skills and industry knowledge.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Degree HVAC is its versatile range of capabilities. “Each of our owners has a specific sphere of expertise—Rick specializes in the construction and design side while Trini’s specialty is service,” explains Ms. Lazzarini. “Because of this, we’re able to offer the best of both worlds. Regardless of a client’s HVAC needs, they’re going to get knowledgeable, high-quality service.”

Industry Info

If you’re interested in improving your HVAC system’s performance, consider getting a smart thermostat.

On average, heating and cooling comprises half of a home’s annual energy consumption, so if you’re looking to cut costs, your HVAC system should be the first place you look. One worthwhile measure is purchasing a “smart” thermostat such as the Nest Learning Thermostat. By learning your temperature preferences and daily routine, the thermostat creates a schedule that optimizes both comfort and energy efficiency. According to independent studies, this saves homeowners an average of 10 to 12 percent on heating bills and 15 percent on cooling bills.

One of the best things about smart thermostats is their self-sufficiency. All you have to do is install it on your wall and it takes over from there. In the following days, the thermostat will take note of when you get up, leave for work, return home and go to bed, as well as your preferred temperature settings during these times. While adjusting to your schedule and preferences, the thermostat will also seek ways to minimize energy usage.

So, how does it work? In the Nest Learning Thermostat’s case, the device relies on a series of built-in algorithms that allow it to “learn” about your home and HVAC system, and it uses this data to maximize energy efficiency. Some of the Nest’s “smart” capabilities include “Cool to Dry,” which signals the air conditioning to kick on when the air gets too humid, “Sunblock,” which prevents temperature miscalculations caused by the thermostat heating up in direct sunlight, and “Airwave,” which saves energy by periodically letting the fan take over for the air conditioner.

Additional features include remote operation (which allows you to alter the temperature from your smartphone), daily and monthly energy reports, and alerts and reminders about things like maintenance and potential performance issues. Furthermore, the Nest can work together with other “smart” systems in your home like automated lights, locks and CO detectors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are your technicians courteous?
A: “Yes, our technicians are always courteous and respectful. They take extra steps to protect our clients’ homes by wearing booties inside and laying down floor covering when needed.”
Q: Why is your estimate higher than some of the other estimates I’ve received?
A: “When comparing estimates, it’s important to look at more than just the bottom line. For example, what brand of equipment does the company plan to install? There are lots of non-reliable brands out there, so that’s something to watch out for in a low estimate. If our estimate seems on the high side, it’s because we use high-quality equipment and provide a careful system design, all to maximize energy efficiency and long-term performance.”

Q: Why do you use Carrier equipment?
A: “Carrier is one of the most reliable brands on the market, so we have confidence installing their equipment. They’re also local, which enables us to provide a faster turnaround time on installations and repairs. Rather than backordering repair parts, we can often get the parts we need the same day.”

Q: Why does my air conditioning system take so long to cool my home?
A: “Numerous factors could be causing this issue. For one, your HVAC equipment may not be properly sized for your home. Single-pane windows and poor insulation can also hamper system performance. Even the orientation of your home (whether it faces toward or away from the sun) can have an impact. If your system isn’t performing to your satisfaction, you may need to change some of these factors. We’d be happy to come to your home, assess your system and offer solutions.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Rick Lazzarini

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Rick Lazzarini is a veteran of the HVAC industry and co-owner of Degree HVAC, Inc., a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (650) 530-0989 or by email.

Rick Lazzarini: A Joint Venture

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

REDWOOD CITY — When asked how he became the owner of an HVAC company, Rick Lazzarini says it was a joint venture. “I started Degree HVAC in 2005 with my business partner, Trini Gudino. We originally met in trade school, where we spent five years training to be union pipefitters. One day, I told him I was thinking about starting my own business, to which he replied, ‘Really? So am I.’ One thing led to another and we decided to partner up to achieve our mutual goal. We started out in my garage; today, we’re in an 8,500-square-foot building.”

As co-owner of Degree HVAC, Inc., Rick says his favorite part of his job is improving his customers’ quality of life. “Most people don’t realize the difference a new, energy-efficient HVAC system can make in their energy bills and level of comfort. It’s very satisfying to upgrade a customer from old, inefficient equipment to a new system that’s going to make them happy for the next 20 to 30 years.”

A resident of Redwood City (where he lives with his wife, Christina, and their children), Rick expresses his appreciation for the temperature and temperament of his Bay Area locale. “The weather is always good, the people are nice and the atmosphere is pretty laid back. It’s California living, so we’re pretty fortunate to be here.”

Outside of work, Rick engages in a variety of active pastimes. “I have a Harley-Davidson, so I like to get out and ride whenever I can,” he says. “I go up to the Russian River a lot, both on my bike and with my family. I also like reading and having family get-togethers—I have a lot of family in the area, so we’re always celebrating birthdays and holidays.”

In his life and career, Rick espouses the wisdom of the Golden Rule. “My philosophy is, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,’” he affirms. “In terms of my business, that means being sensitive to my customers’ budgets and never selling them something they don’t need. Not everyone can afford a new furnace in the dead of winter—which is when they usually break down—so we do what we can to provide affordable solutions to their problems.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Rick says he’d hit the road. “We live in a great country and I’d like to see more of it, so I’d probably take a long road trip around the United States. South Dakota, New Orleans, the Great Lakes…I have a pretty long list!”

  • Simple Tip for Fresher Indoor Air

REDWOOD CITY — When your HVAC system is running, it’s not only heating or cooling your home, it’s also circulating the air. That’s why in mild seasons like spring (when your system is seldom in use), your indoor air can become stagnant due to a lack of circulation. To address this, run your system on the “fan only” setting at regular intervals—ideally 10 to 15 minutes every hour. If you don’t want to do this manually, consider investing in a thermostat with the capability to program “fan only” operation. This will allow you to enjoy fresh, well-circulated air without having to continually adjust your thermostat.

    Complete Video Transcription

REDWOOD CITY — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you want fresher indoor air, you’ll be glad to know there’s a simple way to get it. Today we’re in Redwood City with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Rick Lazzarini of Degree HVAC to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Rick Lazzarini: A lot of people don’t realize that better indoor air quality can be as simple as turning on the fan selector switch. Go to your thermostat, go to the switch that says “fan”, and place it into the on position. This promotes better air circulation through the house, which you don’t normally get, because a lot of people will just leave their system running in auto. So, every time the furnace comes on or the air conditioner comes on it only runs the fan for the duration of that cycle and, usually, your house will be pretty even-tempered after it runs, so there’s no need for the fan to run. There are also thermostats that have this programmable feature in them and will alleviate the need to run back and forth every hour for 15 minutes and turn your fan on.
