Comparative Summary

Home repair contractors are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves from their competition, and those that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award are already several steps ahead. In addition to its Diamond Certified status, Diaz and Sons Construction sets itself apart by offering a unique combination of small-scale work with large-scale expertise. “A lot of building contractors won’t do small jobs, so it can be difficult to find a qualified, trustworthy handyman,” says President Leo Diaz. “That’s where we come in. We focus on smaller jobs that larger contractors are not usually interested in doing.”

Diaz and Sons Construction has been providing handyman services for residential clients throughout Sonoma County since 1999. The company has the in-house capabilities to work on all types of small-scale home improvement jobs, and its handyman service can assist with most repairs to the interior or exterior of the home.

Unlike home repair contractors that take a “one size fits all” approach to every job in an effort to maximize their workload volume, Diaz and Sons Construction takes the time to offer insight that adds value to its clients’ projects. “We advise our clients on the best ways to use the spaces they’re working with,” affirms Mr. Diaz. “By observing what makes sense and articulating that information in an understandable way, we can help them make the most of their investments and the right decisions for their homes.”

Ultimately, Diaz and Sons Construction sets itself apart by striving to always deliver quality workmanship in a timely manner, understanding its clients’ needs and doing its best to work within their budgets. “My clients know I’m trustworthy and I’ll stand behind the work that we do,” says Mr. Diaz.

Industry Info

When it comes to a residential remodeling project, it’s important to take the necessary preparation steps.

If you’re planning to remodel your kitchen, bathroom or another area of your home, make sure you devote plenty of time to preliminary steps. Here are a few to consider:

Find the right contractor. Your contractor will be the guiding force behind your project: the one who takes your vision and makes it reality. That’s why it’s crucial to choose a contractor who is trustworthy, efficient and communicative.

Determine your budget. Your budget will influence all aspects of your project, from the design to the materials. Once you know your budget, you’ll know the scope of what you’re able to do, so it’s best to determine this early.

Get design ideas. If you’re having trouble coming up with design ideas, try browsing remodeling magazines and websites for inspiration.

Choose materials. After determining your budget, it’s time to start looking at materials. To avoid delays during the project, materials should be selected in the design phase and ordered before the work begins. If you’re not sure where to start with material selection, ask your contractor for guidance.

Prioritize communication. To achieve the best possible results, make sure your contractor is straightforward and communicative about what’s happening throughout every step of your project. The best contractors know that communication isn’t just about trust and honesty—decisions often have to be made after work has already begun, and if you aren’t aware of all your options, you won’t be in a position to make the right decisions, which can lead to project delays and increased costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kinds of services do you offer?
A: We’re qualified to do all phases of construction, but we generally stay away from big projects like additions and whole-home renovations. We prefer to focus on smaller projects that aren’t as time-consuming and labor-intensive, such as bathroom remodels, interior and exterior painting, cement jobs, siding repair, window and door installations, and fine carpentry work.

Q: Do you do foundation work?
A: No. We can pour concrete slabs, but we don’t do foundations.

Q: Do you provide free estimates?
A: Yes. Just tell us the details of your project and we’ll respond with a quote and timeline for the work.

Q: Do you use subcontractors?
A: It depends on the project’s timeline and if any specialty work is needed. For the most part, we try to keep everything in-house, but we’ll bring in subcontractors if we think it would be beneficial to the project.

Leo Diaz: A Family Operation

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — Leo Diaz found success as a contractor thanks to both a family background and an entrepreneurial streak. “Growing up, I had several family members in the trades, including my father who was an electrician,” he recounts. “I’ve basically been working my whole life. Even as a kid, I was doing lawn maintenance and other jobs for my ‘clients’ around the neighborhood.”

Following high school, Leo enlisted in the U.S. military, where he took part in Operation Desert Storm during his three tours of duty. After finishing his service, he relocated from his home state of Maryland to California to be with his wife, Heidi, whom he met while stationed in Alameda. In 1999, he started his own construction business, and two decades later, he’s joined by his two sons, Lorenzo and Maximus. “It’s a real family operation,” he affirms.

Today, as president of Diaz and Sons Construction, Leo says his favorite part of his job is turning his clients’ visions into reality. “I enjoy sitting down with a client, getting an understanding of what they want to accomplish and bringing that to fruition for them.”

A resident of Santa Rosa, Leo expresses his appreciation for life in the Bay Area. “Maryland is a nice place, but it has cold winters and hot, humid summers. Here, there’s no humidity and we get blue skies almost all year long. Also, there’s an endless amount of things to do. I love mountain biking in Trione-Annadel State Park, as well as golfing and fishing.”

In regard to his professional career, Leo espouses the importance of putting your best foot forward. “Every time I work for a client, I try to give them the best job possible,” he explains. “I want to make an impression on them, so the next time they need work, they’ll call me again. Basically, my goal is for every client to be a long-term client, and the only way to accomplish that is by doing great work.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Alaska.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?
A: My house—my wife is the best cook I know of!

Q: What’s your favorite TV show?
A: “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.”

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I collect all kinds of things, including fishing rods, tools and lighters.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: Thanksgiving, because there’s no gift exchange and it’s all about family.

  • Inspecting Your Home Exterior

SANTA ROSA — As a homeowner, it’s important to periodically inspect your home exterior. A good way to do this is to walk around your home and look closely for any potential issues. By doing this a couple of times each year, you can catch and remedy problems before they become full-blown. Here are a few things to look for during your inspection:

Missing/protruding nails. Exposed nail holes can allow water to penetrate your roof and siding, which can potentially lead to dry rot issues.

Missing/worn-out caulking. Caulking is used to seal gaps around windows, doors and other areas from moisture intrusion. However, it isn’t permanent, so you’ll need to reapply it periodically.

Unsealed gaps around eaves. Eaves are the parts of your roof that hang out over the walls. It’s easy to overlook gaps around the eaves, but they can provide an easy conduit for rodents to enter your home, so keep an eye out and seal any that you find.

Moisture on the insides of window panes. This may be a sign that the window’s seal has deteriorated, or it may be a symptom of failed exterior caulking. If it continues to be a problem, consult a professional.

These kinds of issues may appear insignificant at first, but they can lead to major consequences like water damage and pest infestation. By checking for and addressing them proactively, you stand to save thousands of dollars on future repairs.

I wasn't the exact person who dealt with them the most. But I had to deal with some scheduling, helped them with direction, and made sure they were doing okay. I would say they did an excellent job for us, I'm pretty sure we are using them again soon for more ongoing updates to the school.
