Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for roofing contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Edge Roofing, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: always deliver on its promises. “Building relationships with clients is the most important part of our job, so it’s crucial that we always do what we say we’re going to do,” says owner William Young. “By prioritizing cleanliness and being punctual and professional, we can ensure an overall experience that leaves each client satisfied.”

Edge Roofing has been installing and repairing roofs for residential and commercial clients throughout the Bay Area since 2003. In addition to working on a wide range of roof types (including wood shingle, asphalt, modified bitumen and TPO), the company has the training and equipment to perform roof inspections, install seamless aluminum gutters, and more.

Unlike roofing companies that hire inexperienced technicians in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Edge Roofing maintains a staff of highly trained professionals who are qualified to perform all types of roofing work. “We understand that quality results start with quality employees,” says Mr. Young. “Our clients often tell us how friendly and accommodating our technicians are. They go the extra mile because they’re happy where they work and they want to deliver for our customers.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Edge Roofing is its emphasis on quality control and craftsmanship in every aspect of its work. “I personally visit every jobsite, and I also have one or two employees who make sure everything is being done according to our high standards,” says Mr. Young. “We also believe in communicating with our clients throughout their projects. If they have any questions or concerns, they know we’ll be there to take care of them.”

Industry Info

Keep trees and foliage away from your roof for a longer-lasting, better-looking product.
A new roof should look great and protect your house for many years. So, who knew something as lightweight and common as leaves could cause roof failure? According to William Young, owner of Edge Roofing in San Mateo, the best thing homeowners can do to care for their roofs is care for nearby trees. “A lot of homeowners neglect this, but you should have a landscape professional maintain trees near your roof at least twice a year.”

While it might be difficult to immediately discern a difference, Mr. Young says having trees too close to your home can reduce the lifespan of your roof. “Clogged gutters and foliage hanging on your roof cause moisture, so if your roof gets damp and never really dries out because it doesn’t get much sunlight, that can lead to a lot of problems.”

Along with clogged gutters and moisture-welcoming foliage, unkempt trees can cause other issues:

• Unmaintained trees can drop limbs, causing roof damage like broken shingles and holes. This can let water seep under shingles and into the home, causing mold and water damage.
• Branches that touch the roof can rub against the shingles, causing wear and tear.
• Pine needles, leaves, bark and other tree debris can gather on lower or tight sections of your roof, such as against dormers or in crevices. This can allow water to pool, weeds to grow and shingle damage to occur.
• Rodents and other pests can gain access to the roof by using nearby branches. Once there, they can chew into the roofing or build nests that damage the surface of the structure.
• Branches near rooflines can drop leaves that become lodged in gutters. This can cause rainwater to back up and spill over the gutters and along your roofline or into your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does it cost to install a new roof?
A: It depends on the size of your home and the materials you prefer. Once we determine those factors, we can give you an estimate.

Q: How long will it take to complete my roofing project?
A: Depending on the size of the roof, we can usually complete a reroofing job on an average home within three days.

Q: How quickly can you get to my job?
A: We can usually get to most reroofing projects within three weeks, but that depends on weather and logistics. If you have an active leak or another emergency, we can send someone right away.

Q: What is your cleanup process?
A: We clean up the jobsite at the end of every day. We start cleaning at 3pm and devote an hour to removing debris and checking the perimeter of the property. We also put down tarps before we work and make sure there are no nails on the ground.

Q: What’s the best thing I can do to care for my roof?
A: Keep all trees and foliage cut away from your house. A lot of homeowners neglect this, but you should have a landscape professional maintain trees near your roof at least twice a year. Clogged gutters and foliage hanging on your roof cause moisture, which can create a lot of problems if your roof stays damp and doesn’t get a lot of sunlight.

William Young: A Competitive Edge

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN MATEO — As a general contractor, William Young had considered getting into roofing for a long time, but he knew if he did, he’d need to find a competitive edge. “More and more, I was coming across projects that required roof work, so going into roofing just made sense,” he says. “Eventually, in 2006, I got my C30 license to specialize in roofing. However, in order to be successful, I knew I’d need a great team of installers, so I sought out roofers throughout the Bay Area who had good reputations. Edge Roofing was built on the knowledge and experience of myself and my team.”

When asked his favorite part of his job, William gives a twofold answer. “First, I love seeing my clients happy. Second, I love watching the aesthetic transformation that a roof undergoes in just a matter of days. A roof has such a major visual impact, so it’s very satisfying to see that before-and-after progression.”

A lifetime resident of San Mateo, William spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I’m an avid fisherman,” he details. “I have a boat and enjoy fishing for bass and crappies. I try to get out on the water at least once or twice a month. I also like to stay fit by going to the gym several times during the week.” In addition to his personal hobbies, William enjoys spending quality time with his wife, son and daughter. “We go camping a couple of times each year at places like Clear Lake and Lake Camanche. Camping was a mainstay for me growing up, so it has become a real family tradition at this point.”

In his life and career, William espouses the importance of relationships. “To me, forging relationships is vital, whether it’s in my personal life or in the professional sphere,” he affirms. “When you have good relationships with people, it makes communication easier and results in a better experience. This is especially important when it comes to customer satisfaction. Clients want to be kept in the loop, have their questions answered and get help picking out materials. That’s why I’ve always made it a point to focus on the relational aspect and create a smooth, enjoyable experience for the customer.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, William says he’d go fishing. “Maybe I’d take a bigger fishing trip than I usually do. I’ve heard about some lakes in the South that have great fishing, so it would be fun to take a trip down there and see what I catch.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first job?

A: I worked at the San Mateo Fairgrounds during the summers when I was a teenager, doing groundskeeping and setting up for shows and events.

Q: What’s your favorite movie?

A: It’s a tie between “Jaws” and “Top Gun.”

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?

A: The San Francisco 49ers.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: New York City.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?

A: Thanksgiving, because it’s a joyful time of coming together and sharing food, with no real financial obligations attached.

  • Why Roof Gutters Are a Worthwhile Investment

SAN MATEO — Roof gutters are responsible for diverting water off of the roof and away from the home. Throughout the San Francisco Peninsula, there are a lot of older homes that don’t have gutters. While these homes may have been missing gutters for a long time, it’s important to understand the gradual toll this state of affairs can have on their structural stability.

When a home doesn’t have gutters, rainwater runs off the roofline straight onto the ground below. As the water collects, it creates what is essentially a trench around the home. This water can seep down to the home’s foundation and undermine its stability. Later, when the soil around the home dries up in warm weather, the resulting conditions leave the foundation susceptible to problems like sinking and cracking.

If you own a home that doesn’t have roof gutters, you may have been dissuaded from installing them due to the cost involved. However, in light of the aforementioned issues, the cost of installing gutters is far less expensive than the cost of repairing foundation damage that results from not having them. That’s why you should consider investing in gutters to ensure water is properly diverted away from your home.

  • Video: The True Cost of Missing Gutters

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN MATEO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your roof doesn’t have a proper gutter system, you may be surprised to learn how it can impact your home. Today we’re in San Mateo with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor William Young of Edge Roofing to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, William Young: Yes. The importance of gutters is to properly divert water off of your roof and away from your home. Oftentimes, here along the Peninsula and in San Mateo I see a lot of roofs without gutters. And what happens is, water runs off of your roofline onto the ground, and it makes kind of a trench around your home. And it actually diverts water close to your foundation, which causes undermining of your foundation. And then in the spring and summer months, the dirt dries up, and it allows for the foundation to sink, crack. So, ultimately, the cost of installing gutters on your roof now is far less expensive than costly foundation repairs later down the line. In conclusion, I think people spend so much on their roof, they don’t want to go the extra mile to do the gutters. And that’s a big mistake.
