Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for remodeling contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For EDRI Construction, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: focus on providing a high level of service in every aspect of its work. “A lot of contractors struggle with customer service, but we’ve made it the focal point of our business,” says owner Avi Edri. “We take steps to ensure communication and transparency throughout the construction process, which makes our clients feel comfortable and confident.”

EDRI Construction provides a wide range of construction services for residential and commercial clients throughout San Francisco and the surrounding areas, from kitchen and bathroom remodels to accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and room additions. The company utilizes its full-service capabilities to manage each phase of its customers’ projects, from the preliminary designs to finishing touches like flooring and siding installations.

Unlike less experienced contractors that fail to keep their customers in the loop during their projects, EDRI Construction makes communication a top priority. “We create a WhatsApp group for each client so they can easily contact us whenever they have questions or concerns,” explains Mr. Edri. “Every day, we send them pictures from the field so they can see our progress, and we also hold weekly face-to-face meetings so we can go over the previous week’s progress and set goals for the upcoming week.”

Another distinguishing attribute of EDRI Construction is its thorough, honest approach to estimating. “We aim to finish each job within the original estimate that we quoted,” affirms Mr. Edri. “When writing a contract, we look closely at the jobsite and identify any potential problems that could come up during the project. This helps us maintain accuracy in our estimates and avoid price increases during the job.”

Industry Info

When choosing a remodeling contractor, it’s important to take your time and be selective.

If you’re planning to remodel your kitchen or bathroom, one of the first things you’ll need to do is find a contractor to facilitate the project. However, you shouldn’t just choose the first contractor you come across. “There are many good contractors out there, but there are also plenty of bad contractors, so you really need to vet each potential hire,” advises Avi Edri, owner of EDRI Construction in Walnut Creek. “Construction is very expensive as it is, but if you choose the wrong contractor, it can become way more expensive, especially if the contractor is dishonest. Basically, your remodeling project can be either a dream come true or a nightmare, and a lot of it depends on the contractor.”

According to Mr. Edri, the first thing you should do when vetting a contractor is ask lots of questions. “Ask about their background, their experience and their past projects. Next, get references from real people and jobsites that you can visit in person. Don’t settle for an ‘over the phone’ reference—it’s important to actually see the quality of the contractor’s work.”

Mr. Edri says you should also confirm that the contractor is familiar with local building codes. “Building codes are always changing, so it’s important to choose a contractor from your local area. By hiring someone who’s familiar with the local building codes, permits and inspection requirements, you can ensure a smoother job and avoid wasting money on fixing mistakes.”

Experts also caution against basing your hiring decision solely on price. While it’s important to find a contractor who is price-competitive, your main goal should be getting the most value for your money, and that doesn’t always mean the lowest price. Look for a company that takes pride in its work and is in business for the long run. By building a relationship with them, you can be assured they’ll be ready to help if you need more work in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does your payment schedule look like?

A: Rather than taking a big upfront payment, we collect payment in stages as the work is completed. For example, there’s a payment after the demolition is completed, another after the framing is completed, another after the rough plumbing is completed and so on.

Q: Will I be able to get in touch with you during my project?

A: Absolutely. If we can’t answer your initial phone call, we’ll call you back as soon as possible.

Q: Will you stay on the jobsite until my project is completed?

A: Yes. Instead of moving our crews from one job to another, we wait until each project is finished before moving on to the next.

Q: How will you keep track of all the finish materials for my project?

A: We use Google Drive to catalog all the finish materials, from tile and flooring to plumbing fixtures. We’ll email you a link to the Google Drive folder so you can see everything that’s going to be used.

Q: What’s your approach to quality control?

A: It starts with oversight. We have a foreman on each job, as well as a supervising foreman and a project manager who checks the quality of the job on a daily basis. We won’t leave until everything is done correctly. For example, if the tile isn’t done perfectly, we’ll remove it and redo the installation.

Avi Edri: In His Father’s Footsteps

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

WALNUT CREEK — When asked how he got into the construction industry, Avi Edri credits the instruction and inspiration he received from his father. “My dad is a contractor, so I learned pretty everything I know from him,” he affirms. “He’s not only extremely professional, he’s an artist in his trade, so I was lucky to have him as a teacher. I started learned the trade from him when I was 14. It was difficult, but I loved it, and I knew early on that this would be my lifelong career.”

After accumulating several years of experience, Avi started a contracting firm with his business partner, David Tejeda. Today, as owner of Edri Construction, Avi says his favorite part of his work is the satisfaction of a job well done. “I love to see the client happy at the end of the job. For me, there’s no better feeling than that.”

A resident of Walnut Creek, Avi spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “My girlfriend, Elvira, and I have two dogs, Josan and Maximus, and we like to travel with them. Also, we both have big families, so we enjoy visiting our relatives and hosting them at our home.”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Avi espouses the importance of doing right by others. “I believe that if you do good, good things will come back to you,” he explains. “That’s why I’m always straightforward with our clients and follow through with my promises. Some contractors take a ‘hit and run’ approach, where they take advantage of their customers. Not only is that wrong, it also doesn’t bring any good. You can’t get another referral or opportunity from doing people wrong—it’s a dead end. It’s much better to do right by people, because you can sleep well at night and get more opportunities.”

When asked what he would do if he were to retire tomorrow, Avi says he would relax and enjoy his free time. “I would move to Hawaii and just enjoy life. I’m actually planning to retire young if I can. I don’t have any children yet, but if I do, I’d like to retire when they’re between six and 10 years old. That way, I would be able to give them extra attention.”

Ask Me Anything!

A: Coffee.

Q: What was your first pet?
A: A black German Shepherd named Sandy.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Watch movies and hang out with my puppies.

Q: What kinds of movies do you like?
A: I like action movies and crime thrillers. My favorite actor is Denzel Washington, and a couple of my favorite movies are “Man on Fire” and “American Gangster.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Africa.

  • Assessing Countertop Materials

WALNUT CREEK — There are a lot of decisions to make during a kitchen remodeling project, one of which is choosing a countertop material. Below, we’ll briefly look at three potential options: quartz, quartzite and marble.

    Quartz
As an engineered (man-made) stone, quartz is very durable and affordable, but it does have some downsides. Because it’s made in a factory, it lacks the unique natural beauty that other stones possess. Also, while quartz is tough, it’s not indestructible. Most notably, it’s very sensitive to heat. If you took a pot off of the burner and placed it directly on the countertop, the heat could actually cause it to crack.

    Quartzite
This option has a similar name as quartz, but the similarities end there. Unlike quartz, quartzite is a natural stone. It’s very tough and durable, which makes it ideal for countertop application. Moreover, quartzite boasts a natural beauty that’s unmatched by any factory-made stone.

    Marble
Besides being high-maintenance, marble is very sensitive to discoloration and other kinds of damage. While it may be suitable for flooring and some other applications, it just isn’t a good candidate for a countertop material.

  • Video: Choosing a Countertop Material

    Complete Video Transcription

WALNUT CREEK — Avi Edri: We have a very common question, “What is the right countertop that I need to choose? If it needs to be quartz or marble or quartzite, what is the right, what is good material?” So, a little bit about personality and benefit of what is better and good and worse in material. Quartz is an engineering material. Engineering material is very durable, good price. They all look the same. But remember, the quartz has very strong sensitivity to heat.

If you will take a pot and put it on the countertop, the countertop will crack right away, which in quartzite won’t happen. Quartzite is a natural stone, don’t have the sensitivity to heat, but can stain easier than engineering stone. I love the quartzite because it’s a strong and tough stone. Marble, it’s not a good countertop for a kitchen. Marble is good for a floor. It’s high maintenance, but not for countertop for kitchen. It’s very, very fragile and not a good material for a countertop. Thank you very much.

  • Video: Tip for Bathroom Tile

    Complete Video Transcription

WALNUT CREEK — Avi Edri: I like to give some tips for customer, and there is a lot of, many questions, the customer asking me, “What’s the right size of a tile for a bathroom?” I will recommend to have a large format of tile for the wall, less grout. Less grout is easier to clean. I think it looks better, but in design, everyone with his own design. But I think less grout, better for the bathroom, less problem with water. Thank you.
