Company Philosophy

“Customer satisfaction is our number one goal, so we focus on providing the highest quality of service in the industry and doing the job right the first time. We go above and beyond on every service.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for septic service companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Environmental Pump Services, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: go above and beyond on every job by supplying its clients with useful information that helps them avoid potential problems in the future. “Most people aren’t familiar with how their septic system even works, so we take the extra step and time to educate our customers so they have a better understanding of what’s going on,” says owner Blaine Cristando. “Our goal is to save them as much grief as possible on future services.”

Environmental Pump Services has been pumping septic tanks, cleaning grease traps and providing wine waste removal for wineries since 2008. The family-owned and operated company works with commercial and residential clients in Sonoma, Marin, and Napa Counties on the proper cleaning, service, and maintenance of their septic, grease trap, and wine waste systems, and its technicians are available seven days a week to handle emergencies.

Unlike less experienced septic service companies that take a “one size fits all” approach to each project and end up sacrificing quality control in the process, Environmental Pump Services takes pride in performing a thorough job every time. “Some companies will ‘short pump’–they only pump what’s visible and what they can get by dropping their hose straight down in the tank, which leaves the residual at the bottom,” explains Vice President Eric Hawley. “Other companies will even go as far as only pumping one side of the tank. We never leave a job until the tank is completely clean. We also have special equipment that allows us to mix and clean tanks exceptionally well, which a lot of companies can’t and won’t do.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Environmental Pump Services is its ability to take on a variety of work that other companies don’t have the experience or equipment to handle. “We’ve worked on everything from residential septic systems to large-scale pumping and hauling projects for city municipalities,” says Mr. Cristando. “Regardless of how big or small the job is, we provide the highest quality service in the industry and do the job correctly every time. If we don’t, we’ll be back to correct it.”

Industry Info

To avoid costly problems, be proactive about maintaining your property’s septic system. Like many household systems that aren’t readily visible to the eye, septic systems are easy to ignore. However, without proper maintenance, they can create costly repair situations for homeowners. “We get a lot of calls from people who haven’t had their tanks pumped in 20 or 30 years,” says Blaine Cristando, owner of Environmental Pump Services, Inc. in Healdsburg. “It’s like driving a car for 100,000 miles without ever changing the oil. We get there and find that everything in the tank has completely solidified, which requires a lot of time and effort to clean.”

In addition to the possibility of a more expensive service call, Mr. Cristando says a lack of maintenance can lead to problems within the septic system itself. One such problem is a lack of service on the tank, which helps contain bio mat and contaminants from the liquid that emerges from the tank to the leach lines. “When your tank goes too long without service, bio mat works its way out into your leach lines and starts to plug them up. Even after the tank is pumped, the system may back up again in a couple of months because it has been abused for such a long period of time.”

According to Mr. Cristando, since there are only a few visual indicators for when a tank needs to be serviced, people often don’t know they have a problem until the situation is already out of control. “One of the biggest red flags is when the toilet starts to back up or won’t flush down,” he says. “Often, you’ll hear a gurgling sound in the toilet or shower/tub drain, which is the sound of the sewage and waste water trying to go down. In most cases, this is followed by sewage backing up into a toilet or shower.”

The best way to avoid clogging or backup issues with your septic system is to have it serviced on a routine basis. Since the frequency of service can vary depending on the size of your tank and your household, consult a pumping company to determine an appropriate interval for your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should I have my septic tank pumped?

A: That depends on a few factors, including the size of the tank and the number of people using it. For example, if your household only has two people, your tank may only need to be pumped once every seven to 10 years, but if you have a household of four or more, it may need to be done every three to five years.

Q: Do you offer ongoing maintenance?

A: Yes. Based on the information we get when we service your tank for the first time, we’ll mail you a postcard to remind you when your tank is due for service. For commercial clients like restaurants, we can establish a regular schedule to have grease traps pumped as frequently as required by local waste water agencies.

Q: Can you inspect my system while you’re cleaning it?

A: Yes. Whenever we clean a tank, we inspect it for cracks, broken pipes and any other problems that need to be addressed. That way, if a repair is needed, you can get it taken care of as soon as possible before other issues arise.

Q: Do you clean up after the job?

A: Absolutely. We try to leave each jobsite as clean as it was when we got there, if not cleaner. We’ll even mop on our way out the door to make sure no residue or messes are left behind on the premises.

Q: Why is my grease trap overflowing?

A:  It’s likely due to a lack of regular maintenance or subpar work on the part of another pump company. In many cases, when we get a new customer, we have to clean up another company’s lack of thorough maintenance on the tank to get the system back to maximum operating performance.

Blaine Cristando: Pumped

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

HEALDSBURG — After a decade in the waste removal business, Blaine Cristando had grown tired of working for big companies that didn’t care about customer service. So, when a friend suggested they go into business together, he was pumped about the idea. “My business partner, Eric, and I met while working for Waste Management,” he recounts. “Later, after we’d both moved on to other companies, he approached me about starting our own business. In an industry dominated by large corporations, we knew there was potential for a smaller company that provided quality work and customer service, so we founded Environmental Pump Services in 2008.”

Blaine and Eric started out small, but with steady effort, they were able to build a positive reputation and a loyal customer base. “We grew the grease trap side of our business by going door-to-door to restaurants and grocery stores, and we relied on phone book advertising and word of mouth for the residential septic side,” explains Blaine. “Ultimately, I think it was our commitment to quality service that drove our business to where it is today.”

Today, as owner of Environmental Pump Services, Inc., Blaine says his favorite part of his job is educating his customers. “One thing we do that our competitors don’t is explain to our clients how their systems work. Whether it’s a septic system or grease trap, we tell them all the do’s and don’ts so they can avoid problems in the future. It makes me feel good to leave our customers feeling cared for and better informed.”

A resident of Healdsburg (where he lives with his wife, Cindy), Blaine expresses his appreciation for life in Sonoma County. “The way I look at it, we live in paradise,” he says. “We have the best weather you could ask for; there’s always something going on in the community; and we’re just a short drive away from the ocean, the mountains, and San Francisco.”

Outside of work, Blaine spends the bulk of his time with his family, which includes his and Cindy’s sons Tanner (20) and Austin (18). “Being a small business owner, a lot of my time goes to my business, so when I’m not working, I’m usually with my family,” he says. “We’re all very active and enjoy sports, as well as going to San Francisco to hang out and explore.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Blaine says he’d go on an extended vacation. “It’s hard to imagine myself retired, but I suppose I’d start by doing some traveling. I’m Italian, so maybe I’d go to Italy and try to trace some of my ancestry.”

  • Basic Septic System Maintenance

HEALDSBURG — Due to a case of “out of sight, out of mind,” residential septic systems are often neglected. In some cases, homeowners will go for two or three decades without having their systems serviced, which is comparable to driving a car 100,000 miles without ever changing the oil. This lapse of maintenance often results in a costly situation, whether in terms of labor-intensive service or system repairs.

Since there aren’t any visual indicators of when a septic system needs to be serviced, homeowners often don’t know there’s a problem until it manifests itself in an outward manner (i.e. sewage backing up through sink or shower drains). To avoid such a situation, you should have your system serviced on a routine basis. Frequency of service will vary depending on the size of your tank and household, so consult a local pumping company to determine an appropriate interval for your system. In most cases, service intervals range from once every 10 years for a household of two to every three to five years for a household of four.

  • Video: Maintaining Your Septic System

    Complete Video Transcription

HEALDSBURG — Host, Sarah Rutan: A septic system may be easy to ignore, but neglecting maintenance can result in adverse and expensive consequences. To learn more, we’re here in Healdsburg with Eric Hawley, vice president of Environmental Pump Services, speaking on behalf of Diamond Expert Contributor Blaine Cristando.

Eric Hawley, vice president of Environmental Pump Services, Inc.: With residential septic, proper maintenance is going to keep you from having long-term, very costly repairs such as complete leach line, or if you have a mount system, failure. The longer you let the tank go, the more sludge and biomat you end up out in the field – and it completely plugs it and will shut it down. So proper maintenance will avoid that situation. So just a little bit of maintenance, saves a lot of money in the long run.
