Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for carpet and upholstery cleaning companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Expert Clean & Green, the keys to keeping clients happy are simple: provide them with high-quality service and make sure they’re completely satisfied with the results of its work. “My goal has always been to provide people with Green, nontoxic cleaning that they can trust,” says owner Ofer Kolton. “It’s very satisfying to see how much of a difference I can make in their homes.”

Expert Clean & Green has been cleaning carpet, upholstery, area rugs, tile and grout, and other surfaces for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo County and San Francisco since 2010. The company offers fragrance-free cleaning and uses environmentally-friendly products made by industry leaders like One Earth and Procyon, and its state-of-the-art equipment allows it to complete jobs as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Unlike carpet and upholstery cleaning companies that take a “one size fits all” approach to each job in an effort to maximize their workload volume, Expert Clean & Green provides personalized service that address every customer’s specific needs. “I don’t schedule myself so tightly that I have to rush from job to job, which means I can take the time to do everything correctly, explain my process and make sure the customer is happy,” explains Mr. Kolton. “Every job is personal to me and I want my clients to trust me, so I do everything I can to make them feel comfortable.”

Ultimately, Mr. Kolton sees his technical expertise and decades of experience as Expert Clean & Green’s most important attributes. “I’ve been cleaning for more than 30 years and I’ve invested hundreds of hours into advanced training, so I know what it takes to ensure great results,” he says. “My customers can expect me to promptly return their calls and emails, show up on time, and do a great job.”

Industry Info

When it comes to caring for your carpet, don’t underestimate the importance of vacuuming.

Regular vacuuming is crucial for maintaining any type of carpet, especially in high-traffic areas that attract a lot of soil. When dry soil particles are driven down into the carpet pile, they can scratch the fibers and lead to premature wear. To avoid this, you should vacuum high-traffic areas of your house every day and other areas once a week. Here are some general vacuuming tips you can follow to ensure your carpet lasts as long as possible:

Consider investing in a high-quality vacuum cleaner. Inexpensive vacuums will remove surface dirt, but they won’t get rid of hidden dirt particles that embed themselves in the carpet pile. Look for a vacuum that has a rotation brush or combination beater/brush bar—it’ll agitate the carpet pile and loosen soil so it can be easily vacuumed. If you have a thick loop pile carpet (Berber), use caution when brushing or rubbing the surface, as it’s more sensitive than regular carpet and might become fuzzy. Instead, try using a vacuum with an adjustable brush that’s lifted away from the carpet to prevent agitation.

Don’t forget about the vacuum bag. A recyclable paper vacuum bag is fine for trapping small dirt particles, but you can also use a high-efficiency vacuum bag (also known as a microfiltration bag) to go one step further and trap microscopic particles like mold/mildew spores and dust mites, which are common sources of allergies. Regardless of the type of vacuum bag you choose, remember to check yours often and replace it when it’s about two-thirds full.

Keep track of working parts. Make sure your vacuum’s belt is in good condition before each use, and confirm that the brush or beater bar rotates when it comes in contact with your carpet. If you need to adjust your vacuum to the right height setting for your particular carpet, raise the brush or beater bar to its highest setting and then lower it until it touches the pile enough to slightly vibrate the carpet underneath. If the vacuum gets close enough to significantly slow the motor, raise it back up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take for my carpet or upholstery to dry after the cleaning?

A: Dry time varies depending on a variety of factors, including the thickness of the carpet/fabric and the weather. It usually takes between three and 24 hours for most surfaces to dry.

Q: Will my carpet smell like perfume after you clean it?

A: No. I use products that don’t leave scented residue, and I also offer fragrance-free cleaning at no extra charge.

Q: Do you use Green cleaning products?

A: Yes. All of my products carry either the Green Seal certificate or the Safe Choice certificate. Green Seal has very strict guidelines of what products can be used and how safe they are for people. Safe Choice is through the EPA, and they check the ingredients in cleaning products and only allow the safest in their class.

Q: Do your cleaning products contribute to resoiling?

A: Residue attracts resoiling, and I only use products that leave miniscule to nonexistent residue. If you take care of your carpet and vacuum it, it’ll stay clean for a long time.

Q: Can my pets stay in the house while you’re cleaning?

A: Yes, my cleaning products are safe for animals and people. However, for their peace of mind and comfort, please arrange for your pets to be in a quiet space away from the place where I’m working.

Q: Will there be any additional or hidden charges?

A: If it’s a normal cleaning, I’ll discuss everything with you in advance so there won’t be any surprises, but there are certain circumstances where I charge extra. For example, if there are pet or dye stains, I’ll need to provide dyeing services. That said, I’m always honest with my clients about what services they need, what’s included in their jobs and what extra fees will apply based on additional services.

Q: Can you guarantee the removal of all stains?

A: I wish I could, but unfortunately, some stains are permanent. Bleach and acne medication will strip carpet dye, and some cough medicines, markers, and inks will leave permanent color. I have the experience to know which stains will leave permanent marks or irreversible damage. Knowing when it’s safe to remove a stain can mean the difference between beautiful-looking carpet and permanently damaged carpet.

Ofer Kolton: Filling the Void

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN MATEO — After immigrating to the United States from his home country of Israel, Ofer Kolton found work as a house cleaner. Later, when he saw a void in an adjacent industry, he figured he might as well be the one to fill it. “While working as a house cleaner, I kept hearing complaints from my clients about carpet cleaning companies,” he remembers. “A lot of these companies operated on a bait-and-switch model, where they’d quote the customer a low price over the phone, only to hike it up considerably when they were actually on the job site. In addition, the quality of the work was often poor. I mentioned this to my wife, and she asked me, “Why don’t you start your own carpet cleaning business?” Next thing you know, I was enrolled in a trade school to learn how to clean carpet. After I finished, I started up my business and I’ve been at it for more than 30 years now.”

Today, as owner of Expert Clean & Green, Ofer says his favorite part of his job is seeing how happy his clients are once the work is done and their homes look and feel clean. “Usually, when I arrive at the client’s home, the carpet may look grungy, but by the time I leave, it looks great, and the client is happy. So, I appreciate that simple satisfaction I get from every job I perform.”

Ofer spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I have a lot of hobbies, including reading, listening to music and working in my vegetable garden,” he details. “Gardening is a great way to relax—I even find weeding relaxing!” Ofer says he also enjoys going on hikes at local state parks, vacationing with his family, and seeping fine green and Oolong teas.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Ofer espouses the virtue of the Golden Rule. “Treat people the way you want to be treated, and things will usually work out alright,” he says. “I’m a straight shooter and I don’t sugarcoat things. If I think someone is not going to be happy with my service for whatever reason, I’ll refer them elsewhere. I stand by my honesty and professionalism, and the clients who use my services appreciate that.”

When asked what he would do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ofer says he’d spend more time enjoying the various pastimes he currently enjoys. “I would continue tending to my garden, reading and listening to music. I’d also travel more since there would be more time for that.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What do you prefer: coffee or tea?
A: That’s a tough one, because I like both for different reasons. My wife and I roast our coffee, so we love that. But I also enjoy fine green and Oolong teas made by artisan tea makers. There are many different styles and flavors of tea to choose from.

Q: What’s the best concert you ever attended?
A: When I was visiting Brazil, I got to see Mercedes Sosa, the famous Argentinian singer and political activist. She had been exiled from Argentina because the junta didn’t like that fact that she was fighting for freedom. It was a powerful performance.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Stay home, read a book and drink some good coffee or tea.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world you haven’t yet visited, where would you go?
A: Nepal.

Q: Do you have a favorite book?
A: I read a lot of books, so it’s hard to pick a favorite. One that comes to mind is “Look Homeward, Angel” by Thomas Wolfe.

  • How to Spot Clean Your Carpet

SAN MATEO — Spot cleaning a carpet stain may not seem like a complicated task, but a lot of people still do it incorrectly. Worse than merely being ineffective, improper spot cleaning can actually make a stain worse than it was to begin with. That’s why it’s crucial to use correct procedure when spot cleaning your carpet. Follow these steps:

Remove solids. Use a spoon to scoop up any solid components of the spill.

Soak up residual liquid. Take a paper towel and blot the stained area. Remember to blot, not rub, as the latter can do more harm than good. Keep blotting for as long as you continue to see liquid coming up (you’ll likely need several paper towels).

Apply your spot cleaning product. The biggest mistake made with spot cleaner is using too much. Spot cleaners contain a chemical called a penetrating agent that breaks surface tension in the carpet and makes it easier for liquid to penetrate. Because of this, applying too much cleaner can cause the stain to transfer from the carpet fibers down into the pad, which will make removal much more difficult. So, when applying spot cleaner, just mist the area a little. Gently rub it in with your fingers and continue to blot the area with a paper towel.

Apply pressure. Even if it seems you’ve blotted up all the liquid in the carpet, there still may be some residual in the lower portion, including the pad. If this is the case, that residual liquid will likely wick upward over time, causing the stain to reappear. You can prevent this by taking one final spot cleaning measure:
    • Place about ten paper towels over the spot
    • Place a large plastic bag over the towels
    • Stack 5-8 heavy books on top of the plastic bag
    • Leave the stack of books there for six hours. The weight will allow the paper towels to soak up any remaining liquid in the carpet.

  • Verifying Green Carpet Cleaning Claims

SAN MATEO — These days, terms like “Green” and “organic” are used a lot, and the carpet cleaning industry is no exception. Many carpet cleaners claim to be Green and use safe, organic products, but not all of them actually practice what they preach. That’s why, instead of taking a carpet cleaner at their word, you should ask them about the products and methods they employ.

A truly Green carpet cleaner will carry truly Green products. The easiest way to identify a Green carpet cleaning product is to look at the certifications on its label. In particular, look for the following certifications: “Green Seal”, the EPA’s “Safe

Choice” and “Eco Logo”. If you see these certifications on the label, you can rest assured that a trusted company has checked the product’s ingredients to verify its safety and eco-friendliness.

Another thing you can do is ask the carpet cleaner for their Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which lists all the relevant data on the products they use (including active ingredients). Carpet cleaners are legally obligated to show this sheet to customers when requested, so if a carpet cleaner declines to show theirs to you, you may want to look elsewhere.

SAN MATEO — Ofer Kolton: I’m Ofer Kolton, and I’m going to show you today what’s the right way to do spotting. And I know that you go on Google, or you see other people, they don’t tell you the whole thing. And there’s mistakes that people make that’ll cause permanent damage to their carpet. So, if you follow this, you’ll do quite well. Take a tablespoon and scoop it out. Remove as much as you can. And then you take a paper towel, and you blot.

And as long as you’re getting stuff out, do it. You take the spotter, you put it on mist, and you don’t put a lot, just a little bit. Gently rub it in with your fingers and blot again. You can see, voila. Never rub, scrub, never twist. Just gently blot. Now here is a big trick. People get reappearing stains. Stain is gone, a week later it’s back. What happened?

Either you haven’t removed it completely from the carpet or it went down, all the way to the nape of the carpet to the bottom. And capillary action is going to cause it to wick all the way up. That’s the exact way water gets to the very top of the tree. After you’ve spotted and blotted, you put it on top. You take a plastic bag. The plastic bag is to protect the box that you’re going to put on it.

So, you put this box, it weighs down the stain. And you leave it for six hours. And the reason that you need ten layers of towels is that the stain is going to wick to the bottom towel. And then it’s going to go all the way and wick all the way up. And that’s how you don’t stain it when deep into the carpet, or potentially even into the pad that you have no access to.

You never scrub, you never brush, you never twist. Always gently blot. You do that, you won’t damage your carpet, and most of the stains will come up. So, good luck, happy stain removing.

  • Video: Second Guessing Carpet Cleaner Claims

SAN MATEO — Ofer Kolton: Hi, I’m Ofer Kolton. I wanted to talk about green ecofriendly cleaning. And these days, everybody says green, everybody says ecofriendly, everybody says biodegradable. And you can either take their words or not. I suggest that you don’t. And that’s why we offer products that carry green seal certificates. Use product like this. Product that carry all the certificates. So, this one has the [00:00:25 World Award], the Rug Institute. And there is one, two, three, four green certificates. The greens organization, the EPA. That’s a Canadian one. And so forth.

So, if you are a consumer, absolutely has every right to ask what they use, and ask them to show you what they use, and to show you that they’re using products and carry products that have the green seal or the safe choice by the EPA, or the eco-logo. Those are the three that I pass the most. Now, required by law to – upon your request, to show you an SDS – what used to be called MSDS – sheet. Which is material safety data sheet by OSHA, Cal OSHA. And that is required to list all the ingredients that could be a hazardous if there are any hazardous. And that we don’t take – have to take anybody’s word for it, and they’re required to carry it with them.
