Ron Kiesel, President

Fireplace Door Guy designs, fabricates, and installs indoor and outdoor custom fireplace doors for residential clients. In addition to creating unique fireplace doors that meet customers’ specific needs, the company offers supplementary products such as gas logs and fire glass, and it also has the in-house capabilities to install specialty gates for areas like decorative doorways and pet enclosures.

President Ron Kiesel says his ability to offer each client a one-of-a-kind product has been crucial to Fireplace Door Guy’s success. “My doors aren’t cookie-cutter—instead of going to a store and buying something off the floor, my customers can pick one of my many designs and adjust it however they want. I have a design team that will take a customer’s ideas and turn them into something truly distinctive for their home or business. I look at every project like a blank sheet of paper, and my customers really appreciate that.”

Fireplace Door Guy prides itself on its high level of craftsmanship, which Mr. Kiesel says is the key to ensuring quality, long-lasting results. “Most pre-fab fireplace doors are thin and low-quality because they’re machine-made, but my doors are hand-forged by local artisans, heavy and built to last. It’s like buying a piece of furniture that will be part of the home for many years.”

Comparative Summary

In addition to earning the prestigious Diamond Certified award for being rated Highest in Quality and Helpful Expertise®, Fireplace Door Guy offers a one-of-a-kind service that allows its clients to customize their fireplaces to their exact specifications. “No one else in the Bay Area does what I do,” says President Ron Kiesel. “There are stores that sell pre-fabricated fireplace doors, but when it comes to custom-designed, handcrafted doors, I’m pretty much the only guy around.”

Fireplace Door Guy has been designing, fabricating, and installing fireplace doors for residential clients throughout the Greater Bay Area and Sacramento since 2011. The company is best known for creating fireplace doors that meet customers’ unique needs, but it also offers products like gas logs and fire glass and is qualified to install specialty gates for areas such as pet enclosures and decorative doorways.

Unlike less experienced fireplace door companies that offer limited design options, Fireplace Door Guy has the capabilities to make its doors completely customizable. “My fireplace doors are hand-forged by local artisans, which allows me to design them however my clients want,” says Mr. Kiesel. “Whether it’s adding a decorative embellishment or incorporating various types of metals or colors, if a customer can conceive it, I can make it happen.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Fireplace Door Guy is the superior level of craftsmanship it brings to every project. “Most pre-fabricated fireplace doors are thin and not very well-made due to the fact that they’re machine-made,” explains Mr. Kiesel. “In contrast, my doors are heavy and built to last a lifetime, so my customers don’t need to replace them after five years like with some pre-fab doors.”

Industry Info

To get the most out of your fireplace, consider upgrading your fireplace door.

Besides making your home warm and cozy, a fireplace serves as the visual centerpiece of your living space. However, if your fireplace still has glass bifold doors from decades ago, you may not be getting the most out of it. Here are three ways upgrading to a custom-designed, handcrafted fireplace door can provide you with a better experience:

1. Improved aesthetics
Most old fireplace doors were made with materials like brass and tempered glass, which can create an eyesore, especially when contrasted with your living space’s more modern features. A custom-designed fireplace door will give your fireplace a renewed visual appeal. Depending on the design you choose, you can achieve an antique aesthetic or a modern look—whatever best complements your space. You might be surprised by the difference this simple change can make.

2. Improved functionality
In order for a fire to heat your home, glass fireplace doors need to be open—otherwise, the heat will stay contained within. In contrast, most custom-designed fireplace doors feature built-in screens that allow your home to be heated even when they’re closed. That way, you can simultaneously enjoy the warmth of the fire and the visual beauty of your door.

3. Increased safety
Glass fireplace doors can get very hot, particularly when they’re closed, in which case they can reach temperatures of more than 1,000 F. Not surprisingly, this can pose a burn hazard, especially if there are children in your home. In contrast, wrought-iron fireplace doors don’t absorb nearly as much heat as glass. “A custom door will only heat to about 80 or 90 degrees—no hotter than a warm summer day,” affirms Ron Kiesel, president of Fireplace Door Guy in Novato. “That way, you don’t have to worry about anyone burning their hands on the door.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you give me a price over the phone?
A: Yes, I’ll tell you exactly what I can do and how much it will cost so you know what to expect moving forward.

Q: Do you build the fireplace doors yourself?
A: No, I design them. I work with a local fabricator who hand-builds all my doors.

Q: Do you install fireplace inserts?
A: No, but I can remove an existing insert and replace it with a gas log or fire rock set.

Q: Will a gas log be able to heat my home?
A: Yes. My gas logs are made of authentic crushed lava as opposed to cast concrete. Since lava has already been fired by nature, it’s able to get red-hot and warm up a room.

Q: Are there any special considerations for outdoor fireplace doors?
A: I recommend getting outdoor fireplace doors powder-coated, which costs an additional $200. This will help your door better withstand the elements.

Q: Do you stand behind your work?
A: Absolutely. My doors and gas logs are designed to last a lifetime, so if something breaks a few years down the line, I’ll come and fix it for free.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Ron Kiesel

Ron Kiesel: A Door of Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

NOVATO — After losing his livelihood to an economic downturn, Ron Kiesel was fortunate to come across a brand-new door of opportunity. “In the early 2000s, I was a project manager for a housing developer based in Mexico,” he recalls. “Living part-time in Mexico and part-time in Truckee, I had the best of both worlds. However, when the economy crashed in 2008, it all ended. The Mexican economy is very dependent on the U.S. economy, so, not surprisingly, the housing market took a big hit, which put me out of a job. While figuring out what to do next, I had a conversation with my good friend, Danny, who owned a successful fireplace door business in Southern California. He figured if his business model worked in SoCal, it could work up north as well. The next thing I knew, I was selling fireplace doors in the North Bay Area.”

Today, as president of Fireplace Door Guy, Ron says his favorite part of his job is the creative possibilities. “I build all of my doors from scratch, so when it comes to design, it’s pretty much a blank canvas. That allows my customers to be as creative as they want with their designs. One time, a customer gave me a picture of the moon and stars, and I incorporated it into the door design. That keeps things interesting and makes my customers really happy.”

A resident of Novato (where he lives with his wife, Andrea), Ron spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I have a ’99 Mustang Cobra convertible that I enjoy driving when the weather is nice,” he says. “I also have a condo in Scottsdale, Arizona, and I go down there every year for MLB Spring Training.”

In his life and career, Ron espouses the value of a positive mindset. “Wherever I am, I make the best of it,” he explains. “When I was in Mexico, I was happy there; when I was in Truckee, I was happy there; and now that I’m back in the Bay Area, I’m happy to be here doing what I’m doing. Life is full of transitions, some of which are planned, some of which are unexpected, but as long as you can roll with the changes and stay positive, you’ll be all right.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ron says he’d head to a tropical locale. “I like warm, tropical climates, so I’d probably take a vacation somewhere in the Pacific Islands—preferably somewhere I haven’t been yet, like Jamaica.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first job?

A: Selling car parts.

Q: Music or talk radio?

A: Both. I listen to sports radio on KNBR in the morning and Pandora on my phone the rest of the time.

Q: What kinds of music do you like?

A: Mainly country and classic rock.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: Sun Chips.

Q: If you could time-travel, would you go to the past or the future?

A: I’d go back to the 1950s and ’60s. Things were so much simpler and easier back then. Sure, we have a lot more conveniences today, but things are also a lot more complicated. I miss the simpler times.

  • 2 Ways to Update Your Fireplace

NOVATO — Even if your home has been remodeled to today’s style and standards, one aspect may still be obsolete: your fireplace. Here are a couple of ways to bring an outmoded fireplace up to date:

    1. Aesthetics

Whether they were built in the 1980s or the 2000s, most fireplaces are composed of the same elements: a prefabricated firebox with glass, bi-fold doors framed in brass. Unfortunately, regardless of its construction date, a fireplace made of these elements tends to look passé. To update the look of your fireplace, replace those glass-and-brass doors with a custom-made, wrought iron fireplace door. These doors can be made to order and even include specific designs such as emblems or images. By simultaneously evoking old-world charm and modern-day chic, an iron fireplace door will lend your home the touch of character it was previously missing.

    2. Health and environmental impact

In California, wood-burning fireplaces are gradually going extinct due to ever-tightening health and environmental regulations. In addition to winter “Spare the Air” days (which can occur for weeks at a time depending on air quality levels), wood-burning fireplaces are prohibited in new construction residences. Furthermore, some communities require homeowners to remove wood-burning fireplaces (or convert them to gas-burning) prior to executing real estate sales.

Considering the trending trajectory of state legislation, a smart step for updating your wood-burning fireplace is to convert it to a gas-burning unit. Fortunately, this is relatively easy and inexpensive—you just need to install a gas line and a gas log set. With a custom-designed gas log set made from crushed lava (a material that has already been naturally fired by nature), you can recreate the authentic look and feel of a traditional wood-burning hearth while doing away with the associated health and environmental concerns.

NOVATO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you want to enjoy your fireplace without the negative environmental effects, consider converting to natural gas. Today we’re in Novato with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ron Kiesel of Fireplace Door Guy to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ron Kiesel: If you have woodburning fireplace and are concerned about the no burn days, gas logs are an answer for you, and then you will never have a no burn day because gas logs burn clean while wood puts out carbon monoxide, and the carbon monoxide is not good for the atmosphere.
