Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for appliance repair companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For FixEm Appliance Repair, the key to keeping customers happy is educating them so they get the most out of their purchases. “We believe it’s very important for homeowners to know how to maintain their appliances,” affirms co-owner Moshe Spund. “These products need to be cared for in order to have a prolonged life and operate the way that they should. Our customers love that we answer their questions, give them advice and share our expertise.”

FixEm Appliance Repair has been fixing washers and dryers, ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, and other large appliances for residential customers throughout Contra Costa and Alameda Counties since 2014. Mr. Spund and his partner, Natan Framowitz, have the training and equipment to service all major and minor brands, and they also perform preventative maintenance that’s designed to extend the lifespan of appliances.

Unlike less experienced appliance repair companies that rush through jobs and offer few details about their work, FixEm Appliance Repair takes the time to provide a personal touch on every job. “In this industry, not all repairs are obvious and some work requires multiple phases, but we’re always open and honest with our customers about what they need,” says Mr. Spund. “If we need to order a part or we’re not certain a repair will actually work, we’ll let them know upfront. We never hide anything from our customers.”

FixEm Appliance Repair further differentiates itself by acting more like a knowledgeable, helpful friend than a repair company. “We honestly evaluate each repair and help the customer decide whether repair or replacement is the more cost-effective solution,” says Mr. Spund. “We have the confidence to communicate with our clients and provide them with the best possible value. Keeping them satisfied is the most important part of our job.”

Industry Info

When is an appliance worth keeping and when is it time to invest in a new one?

Major appliances are a big investment, so when your refrigerator starts to thump or your washing machine won’t drain, you’re faced with an important question: to repair or replace?

According to Moshe Spund, co-owner of FixEm Appliance Repair in Oakland, keeping older appliances might be the best move if they’re repairable. “I recommend hanging on to older appliances because in most situations older appliances were built better than newer ones,” he advises. “If the repair costs are reasonable and the appliance will function like new after the repair, the smaller fee and potentially longer life can outweigh the benefits of a new machine.”

Most experts recommend replacing appliances if repairs will cost more than 50 percent of what a new appliance would cost. However, if the repairs are more than you want to spend on an older appliance or if newer models have features you can’t live without (smartphone controls, better energy efficiency), investing in a new appliance may be worthwhile.

But don’t swap old for new too quickly. Even though trading up for an appliance with the latest bells and whistles may be tempting, consumers often find they’ve paid for features they don’t use and incur higher repair costs as a result. “Most people don’t use half of the features on their appliances, and that’s where most of the issues happen,” confirms Mr. Spund. “The more sophisticated the machine, the more computer cores and electronic sensors there are, which increases the chances of needing an expensive repair. Also, since older machines are mechanical, they tend to outlast electronic machines.”

If you decide to purchase a new appliance, make sure you protect your investment by buying carefully. It can be tempting to rush into the decision, especially if you have food melting in a malfunctioning freezer, but you deserve the right item for your specific needs. Experts say you should always look for long-term manufacturers’ warranties, trustworthy brands and stores that aren’t pushy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will you tell me if my appliance is worth fixing?
A: Yes, we always let our customers know if it’s worth paying to repair their appliances. If we recommend replacement, we can even provide a few options that would work for your needs and price range.

Q: How long will it take to repair my appliance?
A: It depends on the appliance and the type of repair. We keep our service trucks stocked with common parts for large appliances, so most work can be done on the same day. If we need to order a part, we can usually get it by the next day and complete the repair soon after. Regardless, we’ll keep you informed about the specifics of your situation.

Q: Will you show me the old parts or return them to me?
A: By law, the old parts belong to you, so we’re not allowed to remove them from your property without your permission. If you want to keep them, you’re free to do so, but we can also remove and dispose of them if you’d prefer. The only exception is major control boards—the manufacturers want us to ship the damaged parts back to them so they can see what went wrong.

Q: Do you charge a diagnostic fee?
A: We charge $75 for all diagnostics and estimates. If you decide to have us handle the repairs, we’ll waive that fee.

Q: What types of appointment windows do you offer?
A: We offer three-hour appointment windows, but we understand that this can be quite a long time for many people. So, as a courtesy, we always call 30 minutes before we arrive to let customers know we’re on the way.

Moshe Spund: Assembling a Livelihood

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

OAKLAND — As a kid, Moshe Spund enjoyed taking things apart and reassembling them, but he never thought he’d one day make a career out of it. “I’ve always had an interest in knowing how things work,” he affirms. “To me, it’s like a puzzle. If something isn’t working right, I enjoy the challenge of figuring out what’s causing it and how to repair it. Still, I never considered a career in appliance repair until I saw an online job listing. When I went in for the interview, I was skeptical, but once I started, I fell in love with the trade.”

In 2018 (roughly five years after he started as an appliance repair technician), Moshe and his longtime friend, Natan Framowitz, decided to join forces and start their own appliance repair company. “Natan and I have known each other since we were kids, and after I started doing appliance repair, I convinced him to join me in the trade. Eventually, we wanted to be more independent and provide better service for our clients, so we started our own business.”

Today, as owner of FixEm Appliance Repair, Moshe says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “I enjoy meeting new people, getting to know them, hearing their stories and sharing some of mine. Along the way, I try to provide the best service I can and offer advice on appliance maintenance.”

A resident of Richmond, Moshe spends the bulk of his free time outside. “I’m a pretty outdoorsy guy, so I try to enjoy the California weather as much as possible,” he affirms. “I enjoy going hiking, skiing, and camping in places like Lake Tahoe and Yosemite.”

In his life and career, Moshe espouses the value of positivity. “I try to do at least one positive thing every day,” he says. “Whether I’m dealing with a client or a complete stranger, I make it a point to be kind and act in a selfless manner. I don’t like negativity—I’m all about keeping things positive and doing right by others.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Moshe says he’d probably start a new business. “I like to keep busy. I have a hard time imagining a life of just sitting on a beach and drinking margaritas. That may be fun for a while, but it would get old pretty fast.”

A: India.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: I like healthy snacks like fruit.

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?

A: A while back, I was working on acquiring a skydiving license. I stopped after six or seven jumps, but I’m still hoping to go back and complete it one day.

  • An Important Dryer Maintenance Measure

OAKLAND — Have you noticed that your dryer isn’t working as well as it used to? Is it taking longer to dry your clothes? Is your dried laundry full of loose lint? Believe it or not, these issues can all stem from a clogged lint filter.

When a dryer’s lint filter isn’t cleaned between loads, it can inhibit operating efficiency and result in longer drying times. Plus, when the filter is full, it can’t properly capture lint, which will instead end up all over your freshly dried clothes.

What’s more, cleaning your lint filter is an important safety measure. Every year, thousands of house fires are caused by dryers, and a good number of these result from clogged lint filters. So, don’t let this happen to you—clean your dryer’s lint filter after each load.

    Complete Video Transcription

OAKLAND — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your dryer seems to be underperforming, it may be a symptom of neglected maintenance. Today we’re in Oakland with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mo Spund of FixEm Appliance Repair to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Mo Spund: You know how sometimes your dryer takes too long to dry your clothes? It seems like it’s not working? Well, here’s something that you can do to maintain it yourself. That little lint filter in the front, make sure that it’s clean before and after each use. Not only is that going to help your dryer dry more efficiently, it’s going to prevent a lot of other issues from happening – lint building up in your vent or inside the machine, which is actually a fire hazard. Make sure you stay safe and maintain your appliances.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Natan Framowitz

Natan Framowitz: Unlocking Potential

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

OAKLAND — Natan Framowitz might never have known he had a talent for appliance repair were it not for the encouragement of a close friend. “Around 2014, my longtime friend, Mo, started doing appliance repairs and convinced me that I should join him in the field,” he recounts. “I was hesitant at first—the idea of people relying on me to fix their appliances was a bit intimidating. But soon after I started, I realized I had a knack for it. I found I was able to fix things that other technicians couldn’t, and it basically became second nature.”

In 2018, after three years working together at the same company, Natan and Mo decided to team up and start their own appliance repair business. Today, as co-owner of FixEm Appliance Repair, Natan says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “Doing service calls gives me the opportunity to meet a lot more people than I would otherwise. Even though I’m only there for an hour or so, I enjoy talking with customers and making those small connections.”

A resident of Oakland, Natan spends the bulk of his time outside of work on creative pursuits. “My main hobby is making music,” he details. “That’s how I relax—whenever I’m stressed, I just grab my guitar and start playing, and the whole world gets erased. I’m also in the midst of building my own acoustic guitar.”

In his life and career, Natan espouses the value of believing in one’s self. “Never give up on your goals—believe in yourself and you’ll get there,” he says. “Even if you’re unsure whether you’ll succeed, don’t be afraid to try. As I mentioned earlier, I was hesitant about doing appliance repair, but I didn’t let my doubts stop me. Because of that, I ended up unlocking potential I didn’t even know I had. So, don’t be afraid to take that first step. You never know what hidden talents you may discover.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Natan says he’d spend more time making music. “I’d probably build a little home recording studio where I could chill out and pass the time exploring music.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could immediately master any musical instrument, what would you choose?

A: The bagpipes.

Q: What kinds of music do you like?

A: I mainly enjoy rock and heavy metal, but lately I’ve really been getting into jazz.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?

A: Before I started doing appliance repair, I was more of a night owl, but I’ve since become an early bird out of necessity.

Q: What’s your favorite dessert?

A: Vanilla ice cream.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?

A: I would go back to a time before cellphones and social media, when people had more palpable connections with each other.

  • Why You Shouldn’t Use Your Oven’s Self-Clean Feature

OAKLAND — These days, most ovens come with a feature called “self-clean.” At first glance, this seems like a great feature—after all, if your oven cleans itself, that’s one less task you have to worry about. However, as convenient as it sounds, this feature can potentially cause serious problems.

When in self-clean mode, an oven will reach an extremely high temperature. In some instances, this extreme heat can actually cause the oven’s control board to overheat and burn out. Not surprisingly, this will cause the oven to shut off and become inoperable. What’s worse, since the oven door locks shut during self-clean (a protective measure to ensure no one opens it during cleaning), it’ll remain locked after the unit shuts down. At this point, the only way to open the door again is to pry it open.

While this scenario doesn’t happen all the time, it happens often enough to recommend against using the self-clean feature. A better choice is to clean your oven using a grease remover like EASY-OFF®. It may not be as convenient as self-cleaning, but at least you won’t run the risk of an expensive repair bill.
