Company Philosophy

“Our number one priority is making our clients happy, so we go out of our way to ensure they get five-star service. Our biggest reward is a satisfied customer who keeps us in mind for future tree work and recommends us to their friends and family.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for tree care companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Forest Tree Services Inc., the best way to keep clients happy is to prioritize customer service and quality in every aspect of its operations. “My customers know that when they choose me, their trees are going to be properly cared for, which will save them money in the long term,” says owner Forest Kirk. “I always go out of my way to ensure they get the best possible service.”

Forest Tree Services has been providing tree care services for residential and commercial clients throughout Sonoma County since 2011. The company is qualified to handle everything from trimming and pruning to stump grinding and hazardous tree removal, and it also offers 24/7 emergency service for its customers’ convenience.

Unlike less experienced tree service companies that lack the tools to work on certain projects, Forest Tree Services has the equipment and expertise to take on all types of jobs. “Tree work isn’t easy—you have to know how to cut at the right angles and be willing to do things the right way,” says Mr. Kirk. “I have access to a bucket truck, a crane, a chipper and other specialty equipment that allows me to work on all sorts of trees.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Forest Tree Services takes the time to offer its clients specific advice, including when to prune their trees and when to remove sick or declining trees. “It’s possible to save a tree even if it’s completely healthy—if I can still cut it without detrimentally damaging it, I’ll try to save as much as possible,” explains Mr. Kirk. “I can also evaluate areas and help property owners determine if declining trees can stay where they’re planted, which they really appreciate.”

Industry Info

When it comes to caring for your trees, look for a contractor that can provide exactly what you need.

Most homeowners don’t understand the complexities of tree care, so companies that offer quick solutions over the phone can suggest services and treatments that aren’t in the trees’ best interests. “Taking care of your trees can keep them healthy and add value to your property, but if a tree isn’t properly maintained, it can be dangerous,” explains Forest Kirk, owner of Forest Tree Services Inc. in Sonoma. “That’s why it’s important to find the right contractor—otherwise, you risk paying for services that will actually cost you more money in the long run.”

Here’s what to look for in a tree service contractor:

Assurance in the form of insurance and licensing
You should insist on hiring a licensed company that’s in good standing with the State of California and has full liability and workers’ compensation insurance. A state license confirms that the contractor has met their legal obligations, and insurance will cover your property and the company’s employees if anything goes wrong.

The right personnel and equipment
A guy with a chainsaw might be able to cut down or prune your trees, but that’s never your best option. While licensed tree care companies are more expensive than unlicensed operators, they’re also much more likely to give you the quality and value you desire while protecting the health and appearance of your trees.

Options based on your trees’ specific needs
Pruning or removing a tree? Grinding a stump or leaving it? Quality tree service companies will give you options to fit your unique needs. They’ll also account for the appearance of your trees, the safety of your location and other factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is the best time to have my trees pruned?
A: Most routine pruning and removal of dead or dying limbs can be done at any time. However, growth is maximized if pruning is done in late winter or early spring. It’s also smart to prune while the trees are dormant to help prevent pest problems and give the trees the entire growing season to close the wounds made by pruning. I can help you choose the right time to prune your specific trees.

Q: Why should I consider pruning my trees?
A: Pruning can reduce the risk of tree failure, provide better clearance under the trees, reduce shade and wind resistance, maintain the health of the trees, and more.

Q: When do you recommend removing a tree stump?
A: If the stump is going to be a tripping hazard or aesthetically unappealing, I recommend removing it.

Q: Can you save part of a tree even if it’s not completely healthy?
A: That depends on the species of tree. If the tree is still safe and I can cut it without detrimentally damaging it, I’ll try to save as much of it as possible.

Q: Can you save an oak tree once it has bark beetles or other problems?
A: Oak trees decline for 150 years, but there are usually things that can be done to help them. If the tree is in an area where it won’t be dangerous while it’s declining, it can stay.

Q: Can you give me a list of references?
A: Yes, I can send you references by email or regular mail.

Q: What do you do with the debris after trimming or cutting a tree?
A: I can either haul away the debris or leave it for you to reuse as firewood or woodchips.

Forest Kirk: Professional Growth

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — Thanks to an early introduction to the tree service industry, Forest Kirk was able to achieve uncommonly rapid professional growth. “When I was growing up, my mom’s boyfriend owned a tree service business,” he explains. “When I was 11 years old, I started working with him after school and during the summer. I’d also go with him to Fort Ross, where we’d clear out forested areas and process the timber into firewood. Following high school, I started working for another tree service company and trained with a certified arborist. A couple of years later, I decided to start my own tree service business. I got my contractor’s license when I was 22 and earned my arborist certification a year later.”

Today, as owner of Forest Tree Services Inc., Forest says his favorite part of his job is watching his business grow. “Success drives me, so it’s very rewarding to see how much the business has grown since I first started it. I’ve invested a lot into getting the best equipment and providing excellent service, and I’m happy to see that it has paid off.”

A resident of Santa Rosa, Kirk spends most of his time outside of work with his daughter. “I homeschool my daughter, so between her school and my career, I stay very busy,” he says. “I also like extreme sports like snowboarding and motocross. I love to ride my motorcycle and I’m also partway through getting my pilot’s license, although that’s on hold for the time being.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Forest says it’s all about the basics. “In order to run a successful business, you need to make sure your customers are getting what they want at a price they’re willing to pay, and that they’re happy with the end result. Of course, when it comes to tree service, the other important thing is safety. As long as you can keep your customers happy and perform the work safely, that’s a recipe for success.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Forest says he’d take to the skies. “I’d finish earning my pilot’s license, buy a Cessna and fly around the world.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Thailand.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?

A: A night owl, although I also get up early. I just don’t sleep very much in general.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

A: Stay inside and watch a movie.

Q: What’s your favorite kind of food?

A: Mexican food.

  • Annual Tree Maintenance

SANTA ROSA — Maintaining your trees once a year will ensure their long-term health, make your property safer and save you money. Almost all trees require a similar annual maintenance regimen. This includes:

    •  Trimming back excess growth

    •  Removing dead and crisscrossing branches

    •  Performing reductions on elongated, heavy branches to prevent limb failure

    •  Identifying poor attachments and wood decay

    •  Thinning the crown to allow the canopy to breathe, reduce the windsail effect and prevent storm damage

Whether you choose to perform these tasks yourself or hire a tree service contractor, it’s important to make sure the work is being performed to the standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

With the exception of fruit trees, mulberries and sycamores, a tree’s limbs should be trimmed to leads, meaning one-third the size of the original branch. This will enable the tree to continue growing without losing its structural integrity. Bear in mind that topping cuts and stub cuts are not recommended. Additionally, codominant attachments on neglected trees may require cabling or support systems. A certified arborist will be able to advise you on any special needs your tree may have.

SANTA ROSA — Forest Kirk: When trimming your trees, whether you’re doing it yourself or hiring a contractor, please make sure the work is performed to ANSI standards. Almost all trees require just about the same type of annual maintenance.

Crown clean means to go through the canopy and perform work where needed; removing crisscrossing branches for structure; performing reductions on elongated, heavy branches to prevent limb failure; identifying poor attachments and wood decay; and making the work necessary to perform the tree as safe as possible. Crown thin. This reduces the sail effect and allows the canopy to breathe. Preventing storm damage. Removing deadwood to make the tree safe as possible and also aesthetically pleasing. Some trees that were neglected with codominant attachments require cabling or support systems.

With the exception of fruit trees, mulberries, and sycamores, trees need to be trimmed to leads, meaning we cut back to a branch one-third the size of the original branch. No topping cuts or stub cuts. This enables the tree to continue to grow without losing its structural integrity. Trimming your trees safely will save you money and ensure your tree’s health and safety for lifetimes to comes.
