It feels like home. It's the country feeling. Everybody's comfortable and that helps you feel comfortable leaving your pet there. I've never had to worry. They are hands-on. Whatever you need, they provide. They go the extra mile to give the animals the attention needed. That's huge in my opinion.

David Weiss, Owner

Four Paws Pet Ranch provides boarding and day care services for dogs, cats, and exotic pets at its 5.5-acre facility in Santa Rosa. In addition to offering both short- and long-term boarding in a climate-controlled environment, the company offers personalized training programs, onsite grooming, animal adoption, and a membership-only dog park that requires all dogs to be screened for shots and follow behavioral guidelines.

Owner David Weiss says Four Paws Pet Ranch’s model property has been a crucial element of its success. “Instead of being cooped up in a concrete building all day, our clients’ pets have a lot of room to play and socialize. This property has been here since the 1900s, so it has more of a ranch feel than a high-tech feel. We work hard to make it as warm and inviting as possible.”

Four Paws Pet Ranch’s staff takes an interactive approach to caring for cats and dogs, which Mr. Weiss says is important for maintaining an engaging environment where animals feel safe and comfortable. “Our employees are very animal-centric people, and that’s obvious to anyone who sees them interacting with their pets. When a dog doesn’t really want to go home after staying with us, we know we’ve done our job correctly.”

Comparative Summary

Pet boarding companies are always looking for ways to distinguish themselves from their competition, and those that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award are already several steps ahead. In addition to its Diamond Certified status, Four Paws Pet Ranch sets itself apart by focusing on meeting the needs of both the animals that stay at its facility and their owners. “We know we actually have two customers in every situation: the pet and the human,” says owner David Weiss. “Our staff members are the keys to keeping both types of customers happy. The pets have a great time with them and feel safe, and the pet owners feel confident in their expertise.”

Four Paws Pet Ranch has been boarding dogs and cats at its 5.5-acre, climate-controlled facility in Santa Rosa since 2009. In addition to its short- and long-term boarding services, the company offers personalized training programs, animal adoption, a membership-only dog park that requires all dogs to be screened for shots and follow behavioral guidelines, and more.

Unlike some pet boarding facilities that simply warehouse animals while their owners are away, Four Paws Pet Ranch utilizes its sizeable property to allow animals to play freely and socialize with each other, which Mr. Weiss says makes for a better overall experience. “Our animals aren’t cooped up all day–they’re out running around and playing in our 16 spacious play yards. Dogs are pack animals that want to be outside with other dogs, and we provide them with that experience.”

Another unique feature of Four Paws Pet Ranch is its onsite grooming facility, which accepts drop-in and grooming-only appointments in addition to serving boarding and day care animals. “All our groomers are certified and award-winning, and we’re very proud to have them here,” says Mr. Weiss. “We offer a lot of options, from dropping off pets for grooming only to treating them to daycare visits. Either way, we’ll have them clean and ready to go at a specific time.”

Industry Info

Properly socialize your dog to help avoid long-term behavioral problems. Whether your dog is big or small, young or old, calm or active, experts recommend keeping him or her well-socialized. Often, this is simply a matter of making sure your dog gets plenty of exercise and is regularly exposed to positive interactions with other sociable dogs.

An easy way to socialize your dog is to regularly take him or her to a facility that provides dog daycare services. During these supervised play sessions, dogs get a chance to meet other dogs and fulfill their pack animal instincts by playing, chasing and building social skills. “Many dog owners find that providing weekly play changes the way their dogs react to other dogs in public,” says David Weiss, owner of Four Paws Pet Ranch in Santa Rosa. “Instead of getting overly excited, they’ll be calmer and better behaved because they’re used to being around other dogs.”

Mr. Weiss compares socializing dogs with raising children. “Imagine a child who never gets to play with other children—he or she will always be missing an important aspect of their personality,” he says. “The same thing happens to un-socialized dogs; they meet other dogs and don’t know how to get along because they don’t have previous experiences to draw from.”

According to Mr. Weiss, socialization is also a way to break the monotony that can contribute to unwanted behaviors in dogs. “Sometimes people complain that their dogs dig in the yard, chew up shoes or bark when they’re left alone, but those things tend to happen when dogs get bored,” he explains. “Exercise, mental stimulation and regular socialization are important for preventing this unwanted behavior, especially with very young or active dogs. Chew toys and games like hiding food give dogs jobs to do, which helps them burn off excess energy and stay well-balanced.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What types of pets do you board?

A: We mainly board dogs and cats, but we also have experience boarding chickens, snakes, turtles, rabbits, goats, pigs, rats and many other types of animals.

Q: Are your staff members qualified to care for my pet?

A: Yes, all our employees are trained in animal first aid, and they’re pet owners themselves so they know how to make animals feel safe and comfortable.

Q: How often will my dog be in its kennel?

A: Most dog boarding facilities keep dogs in their kennels for most of the day, but we’re the opposite. The only times we put dogs in their kennels is to eat and sleep—they’re outside playing the rest of the time.

Q: How do you keep your boarding kennel clean?

A: We have a cleaning and disinfecting regimen that goes on throughout the week, and we have an onsite laundry facility so we can regularly wash bedding. Kennel cough for dogs is like the flu for humans, so we can’t completely guarantee your dog will never have a problem with illness, but we train our staff on cleaning procedures and work hard to keep the boarding areas as clean as possible.

Q: Will you board dogs that aren’t social with other dogs?

A: Yes. We have separate areas to keep dogs that aren’t social with other dogs, and they still receive the same high level of care.

Q: Can you administer my dog’s medications?

A: Yes, we can give your dog shots and pills, and we’re even able to care for dogs that have recently had surgery by keeping them in their own indoor/outdoor runs while they heal.

Q: Can I bring my dog to your dog park?

A: Yes, but keep in mind that our dog park is membership-only. The main reason for that is so we can make sure all the dogs have their shots, are spayed or neutered, and are sociable with other dogs. The park is open seven days a week, and there’s an annual membership fee of $25, which is donated in its entirety to Countryside Animal Rescue.

Q: What are your dog daycare rates?

A: Our normal daycare rate is $20 a day. However, you can buy a 30-day package that brings the cost down to $15 a day, and you have a year to use that package. We can also deduct boarding fees from your daycare package.

Q: What types of dog training classes do you offer?

A: We offer private classes, group classes, board-and-train options, and in-home training. You’ll meet with our trainer, see what you need to work on with your dog and determine the best course of action.

David Weiss: Dog Days

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA – David Weiss started his professional life in the high tech field, but after investing years in a promising career, he suddenly found himself struggling to stay afloat in an inundated industry. However, it wasn’t long before a fateful interaction would open the door to a new and exciting transition. “I was doing general consulting at the time, and one of the businesses I was working with happened to be a pet services company,” he remembers. “One day while meeting with the company owner, he told me I should get into the business. While I had never considered it before, I’ve always had a heart for animals—as a kid, I was always bringing home stray cats and dogs. I was intrigued by the idea of doing something I really loved, and after giving it some thought, I decided to just go for it.”

After purchasing a local dog kennel, David spent the next few months renovating the property, which had fallen into disrepair over the years. “It was like something you’d see in a movie, where the characters find an old, run-down restaurant or theater and decide they’re going to bring it back to life,” he says. “It was a true diamond in the rough.” Upon completing renovations, David opened Four Paws Pet Ranch in 2009.

After five years in business, David says one of the things he enjoys most is seeing his vision for Four Paws Pet Ranch come to fruition. “I love taking an idea and making it a reality. For instance, we recently opened a members-only dog park, which is something I’ve been thinking about for the past three years. I find it very satisfying to implement these kinds of improvements and see our clients and their dogs enjoying them.”

Originally from New York, David now lives in Sonoma County with his wife, Gina, and their two children, Briana and Andrew, whom he cites as an additional influence on his career decision. “My kids definitely inherited my love of animals,” he says. “They’ve both been involved in 4H, and Briana just graduated from the animal science program at Chico State. Like any parent, I’d love to see them take over the family business one day.”

Outside of work, one of David’s primary hobbies is playing music. “I’ve been playing guitar for 40 years, but I still take lessons just to keep improving, and I like to jam with my friends whenever possible,” he says. Another of David’s favorite pastimes is camping with his family. “We have an annual camping trip that we’ve been doing for 20 years now. It’s a huge group—generally about 60 or more extended family members and friends—so that’s something we look forward to each year.”

In his life and career, David emphasizes the importance of focus when it comes to achieving long-term goals. “If you have a vision, there will always be hurdles you have to jump over in order to achieve it,” he explains. “The trick is to focus not on the hurdles, but on the vision itself. By maintaining a correct focus, you’ll be able to make it over the hurdles and attain your goal.”

  • The Importance of Socializing Your Dog

SANTA ROSA — While nutrition, exercise and affection are crucial elements for keeping your dog healthy and happy, an often overlooked aspect of canine wellness is socialization. Though dogs have become a domesticated species over time, they’re still pack animals by nature, which is why it’s important for them to spend time among their own kind.

A dog park is an excellent place to take your dog, as it provides an ideal setting for both physical exercise and social interaction. Also, if you have to leave your dog at home alone for long periods of time, consider bringing it to a kennel—it’ll give your dog the opportunity to exercise and socialize rather than sit around the house, which, over time, can make a big difference in its physical and emotional well-being.
