Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for solar companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Freedom Solar, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: place equal emphasis on the design and installation phases of each client’s project to ensure their system meets their specific needs. “We approach every job as consultants, not salespeople,” says VP of Operations Bryan Whitton. “Our training and expertise enable us to conceive designs that make sense for our clients and incorporate the most appropriate systems into their homes.”

Freedom Solar has been designing, building and installing solar power systems for residential clients in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda and San Benito Counties since 2009. In addition to its full-service installation capabilities, the company cleans solar panels, offers ongoing system monitoring and sets up solar thermal systems that transfer heat into hot water tanks.

Unlike solar companies that strive to reduce their operating costs by hiring inexperienced installation technicians, Freedom Solar maintains a staff of expert installers who are trained in cutting-edge technology and industry-best techniques. “All our installers and technicians are certified through a variety of institutions to ensure they’re able to perform the best possible installations, both in terms of security and aesthetics,” says Mr. Whitton. “They utilize their skills to provide our customers with exactly what they want.”

Another distinguishing feature of Freedom Solar is the ongoing maintenance program it offers, which includes biannual visits to customers’ properties to wash panels, replace batteries in monitoring parts, and clean filters and inverters. “Ongoing maintenance is important for ensuring every aspect of a solar system is working as efficiently as possible,” says Mr. Whitton. “Most companies in this industry don’t offer this type of program, but we feel it’s crucial for providing the best overall service.”

Industry Info

Make sure you do your homework before installing a solar power system on your property. A solar system can be a lucrative and environmentally-friendly investment, but it’s important to remember that it’s not a “one size fits all” solution. Investing in a solar power system only makes sense if the financial return exceeds the initial expense.

One of the primary factors that will determine if your home is a good candidate for solar power is the orientation of the house itself, particularly the roof. The amount of shade your home receives from neighboring trees and other sources is something to consider—in order for the solar panels to work properly, they need plenty of exposure to sunlight. A roof with a large, uniform surface area that gets a lot of sunlight throughout the day is ideal.

Another factor to consider is the amount of electricity you use on a regular basis. If your home has energy-efficient lighting and is well insulated, your energy bills may be low enough to make the financial savings of a solar system inconsequential.

It’s good to keep these two factors in mind, but the only way to be positive that your home is a good candidate for solar is to have a professional perform a site evaluation and give you solid figures based on the findings. “You shouldn’t worry about whether your house is the right fit for solar until after the site evaluation,” confirms Bryan Whitton, vice president of operations at Freedom Solar, Inc. in Campbell. “Once a professional evaluates your home, electrical system and power consumption, you’ll have a much clearer picture of the benefits that a solar power system can offer to your specific situation.”

If you discover your home is a good candidate for solar and go through with the installation, it’s important to remember that one of the most essential aspects of maximizing your solar power production is making sure your panels are clean. The more residue there is on a panel’s face, the less that panel is able to produce. Dirty panels can result in a decrease in solar production of up to 10 percent, though it can be more in extreme cases. “Some experts recommend washing solar panels once a year, but I say twice a year,” says Mr. Whitton. “The peak production period of the year is between May and October, so that’s when you should be cleaning your panels. Don’t bother cleaning them during winter—the rain will take care of it for you.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start my solar project?

A: It depends on the time of year and our current workload volume. We usually run six to 12 weeks of backlog because we’re providing a high-demand service. You don’t want to hire a company that promises to install a solar system next week—that usually means they aren’t doing good business. On the other hand, it shouldn’t take 10 months either.

Q: How long will it take for my investment to pay off?

A: After we do our initial inspection, we’ll submit a proposal that shows the financial figures, including the calculated internal rate of return, the estimated financial savings over the lifetime of the system and the approximate value added to your home.

Q: How long will my solar system last?

A: We consider the life of a system to be the length of time it’s covered under warranty, which is 25 years, but it’s not uncommon for some systems to last 30 or 40 years.

Q: Will you be able to hide my solar panels from view?

A: It depends on what direction your roof faces and the positioning of the panels. We won’t sacrifice the functionality of the system just to make it look nicer, but we’ll do the best we can. We also provide a variety of panels that emphasize aesthetics—they feature solid black wracking and faces rather than the little cross hatch wires that are typically associated with solar panels.

Q: Do you offer financing?

A: Yes, we offer financing through a credit union that provides loans specifically for solar systems. We also offer a variety of leasing options.

Q: Will installing a solar system increase the value of my home?

A: Generally speaking, yes. UC Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore Lab did a study a couple years ago and came up with some solid numbers based on the actual transactions of houses equipped with solar in California.

Q: Is it better to lease or buy a solar system?

A: That depends on the state of the economy and the housing market. Right now, it’s better to purchase rather than lease, but that could change.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Rich Moore

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Rich Moore: Renewable Enthusiasm

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

CAMPBELL — Rich Moore began his career in the high-tech industry, but he’s always been interested in renewable energy, so when an opportunity arose to get professionally involved, he didn’t hesitate. “I was working with semiconductors and microchips for Texas Instruments, but I found myself looking into renewable energy more and more, especially solar,” he recounts. “When a friend introduced me to one of the first solar integrators in the Bay Area, I was immediately interested. In 2005, I started doing solar full-time, and in 2009, I founded Freedom Solar, Inc.”

A decade after making his seminal transition, Rich says he continues to find gratification in his renewed livelihood. “I enjoy dealing directly with customers and seeing the end results of our work. It’s very satisfying when your job consists of installing products that save your customers money and benefit the environment at the same time.”

Originally from Chicago, Rich came to the Bay Area in the mid-1980s and today resides in San Carlos, where he appreciates the area’s many favorable attributes. “I like the pace, the diversity and the fact that we have a well-educated population,” he says. “Also, since I grew up in the Midwest flatlands, I really appreciate the climate and terrain.”

Outside of work, Rich engages in a number of active pastimes. “I’m a bit of a sports nut, so I enjoy both watching and participating in team sports,” he says. “I’ve coached youth sports for 25 years and served on several boards, so it’s been a real passion of mine.” Rich also likes traveling with wife, Susan, tracing his family’s genealogy and relaxing at the beach. Additionally, he takes time to keep in touch with his daughters, Aryn and Hannah, who are pursuing respective careers in the biotech and electrical engineering fields. “Between Susan, who’s a mechanical engineer, and myself, it’s no surprise that our daughters have an inclination toward math and science.”

As a professional in the solar industry, Rich says providing long-term value for his customers is of the utmost importance. “When I meet with a new customer, I look at them as someone I’m going to have a relationship with for the next 35 years, because that’s how long my product will last on their roof. That’s why I make sure every system we install provides a long-term solution. Not many products come with a 25-year warranty, so it really ups the ante when it comes to customer satisfaction.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Rich says he’d take a trip around the world. “I think it would be fun to circle the globe over the course of a year. My wife would be with me, of course, but if our daughters were able to get away and join us for part of it, that would make it even better.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?
A: Even though I haven’t lived there in more than 30 years, I’m still a fan of Chicago teams like the White Sox, Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks. Of course, being a long-time Bay Area resident, I also follow the local teams.

Q: Did you play any sports in high school?
A: Yes, I played basketball.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Blue Line Pizza in San Carlos.

Q: What’s your favorite comic strip?
A: “In the Bleachers.”

Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: “The Sting.”

  • Two Common Questions about Solar

CAMPBELL — While a lot of homeowners are interested in solar energy, many have questions about the various aspects involved. Here are two common questions solar companies receive from consumers:

Is solar a good investment? To answer this question, there are few different factors to consider, but one of the main ones is the amount of your power bill. Generally, the bigger your power bill, the better financial return you’ll get from solar. In most cases, if your electric bill is more than $100 per month, installing a solar energy system will be a worthwhile long-term investment.

What kind of maintenance does a solar power system require? In addition to minimizing energy costs, a great benefit of a solar system is that it’s virtually maintenance-free. The only real maintenance that’s needed is to periodically wash your panels, which can be done on a seasonal basis. While spraying them with a garden hose will suffice, those who want to get a deeper clean can wash their panels with a soft cloth and soapy water. Keeping your solar panels clean can improve your electricity production by up to 25 percent a year, so it’s well worth the minimal effort required.

  • Video: Two Common Questions about Solar Power

    Complete Video Transcription

CAMPBELL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re interested in solar power but don’t know much about it, you’ll want to know the answers to two basic questions. Today we’re in Campbell with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Rich Moore of Freedom Solar to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Rich Moore: Two questions that we’re frequently asked are is solar a good investment and how do I maintain that investment? If your electric bill is more than a hundred dollars a month, then solar usually will be a much better investment than buying directly from the utility. The greater your bill, the better return on investment you’ll get from solar.

As far as maintaining a system, the only real maintenance that’s required is washing your panels. You can wash them from the ground with a hose if you can reach it from there three to four times a year, or if you can only get to the panels by being on the roof, we recommend once or twice a year by climbing up and taking a soft cloth and water and just washing them down.

You see here we’ve got a pretty dirty panel. This is about one year’s worth of dirt that’s built up. What you want to do is take a soft cloth. It can be in water or a dish soap. Wash the panel down. Come back. You dry the panel to make sure it doesn’t streak and that will take care of the maintenance required. Keeping your panels clean will improve your electricity production by twenty-five percent a year. The more electricity you produce, the better your return on investment.
