Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for electrical contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a personalized approach to every job, regardless of its size. “We treat our clients like family, so if someone isn’t happy with our service, we make it our personal business to resolve the matter quickly and efficiently,” says CEO Jeremy Carlock. “Whenever customer satisfaction is at stake, we do whatever it takes to make things right.”

Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC has been providing electrical services for residential and commercial clients throughout Contra Costa County since 2009. The company has the training and equipment to repair and maintain all types of electrical systems, and it’s also qualified to install whole house fans and electric vehicle chargers; perform panel and service upgrades; handle the electrical wiring for new construction and remodeling projects; and more.

Unlike less experienced electrical contractors that don’t have the resources or confidence to guarantee their work, Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC backs all its craftsmanship with a lifetime warranty, which means any work it performs is guaranteed to last for the lifetime of the product. “For example, if we install a conduit, we guarantee it won’t fall off the wall, and if it does, we’ll reinstall it free of charge,” explains Mr. Carlock. “We take a lot of pride in our work, and backing it with comprehensive warranties is a perfect example of that.”

Another distinguishing feature of Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC is its highly experienced technicians, all of whom are trained to utilize industry-best products and techniques. “Not only are our technicians well-versed in the electrical trade, they also make sure their service trucks are fully stocked, so they’re ready for almost any situation,” says Mr. Carlock. “Ninety percent of the time, we have everything we need to get the job done right away, which saves our clients both time and money.”

Industry Info

If you’re thinking about upgrading your home’s HVAC system, consider the benefits of a whole house fan.

Air conditioning systems have been the standard home-cooling appliance for many years, and while they continue to have an important function in today’s houses, there’s another, more energy-efficient appliance on the scene: the whole house fan. “A lot of homeowners are starting to realize that air conditioning isn’t always the best solution,” says Jeremy Carlock, CEO of Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC in Pleasant Hill. “For example, there are many times when it’s cooler outside than inside, and in those instances, people often wonder if there’s a way to bring in that outside air. That’s where the whole house fan comes in—it’s located in a centralized area of the home and cycles in air during the cooler parts of the day, which allows the homeowner to naturally cool and ventilate their house.”

Mr. Carlock says a whole house fan also provides numerous benefits when it comes to energy efficiency. “When you run an air conditioner, you’re using 10,000 watts of electricity or more. In contrast, when you run a whole house fan, you’re using less than 100 watts on a low setting, and only 300 or 400 watts on a high setting. Since you’re bringing in outside air that’s already naturally cool, you’re getting the same effect as with air conditioning but consuming a lot less energy.”

In addition to saving energy, Mr. Carlock says whole house fans save money over time. “If you don’t want to spend several thousand dollars for a new air conditioning system, you can get a whole house fan for about $1,500. Even better, since you’re now using significantly less power to cool your home, your monthly energy costs will be reduced, which means residual savings over time.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you charge by the hour or by the job?
A: We utilize a flat rate system, which means you’ll know how much your job will cost before we even start working, and that price won’t change without your knowledge. Also, we do all our transactions digitally, which means our technicians can build your quote onsite, capture your signature and immediately provide you with a printed contract.

Q: Should I replace my old electrical panel?
A: A lot of older residential electrical panels are becoming obsolete, particularly those manufactured by Zinsco and Federal Pacific. These outdated panels don’t have the capacity to handle modern power needs, and they can also represent a fire hazard, so we recommend replacing them as soon as possible, especially if they’ve lost their UL listing.

Q: Can my recessed light fixtures be retrofitted to accept LED bulbs?
A: With the increased interest in energy efficiency, LED lighting conversion is a popular request these days. While some situations are more complicated than others, existing recessed lights can typically be retrofitted without any drywall damage.

Q: Are your technicians knowledgeable?
A: We can confidently say that all of our technicians are personable, honest and reliable experts. We make it a point to only hire top-notch individuals—to even be considered, an applicant must have a minimum of three years’ experience and be either a state-licensed journeyman or in a state-appointed training program.

Jeremy Carlock: High Wattage

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

PLEASANT HILL — While pursuing a career in law enforcement, Jeremy Carlock decided to cushion his professional future by learning a trade on the side. Little did he know, this secondary venture would later become his primary livelihood. “After high school, I enrolled in the California Highway Patrol Academy,” he recounts. “When one of my classes was put on hold, I went to work for a family friend who owned an electrical company. I figured it would be good to learn a skill that would keep me employable, in case I was ever laid off from law enforcement. After a couple of years, I decided to switch my focus to electrical work and applied to a union apprenticeship program.”

Having transitioned into full-time electrical work, Jeremy thought his future was secure—that is, until the economic downturn of 2008 left him without a job. However, amidst this seeming career setback, he was able to find a silver lining. “The 2008 crash hit the electrical industry really hard,” he remembers. “The company I worked for went from 125 employees to about 15, and I was one of the last to be laid off. Fortunately, I had been doing a little electrical work on the side, so it allowed me to devote more energy toward developing my own business. Things really started to take off around 2010, and my business has been growing ever since.”

Today, as CEO of Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC, Jeremy says his favorite part of his job is getting to the root of difficult problems. “I love troubleshooting—sometimes I call myself a professional problem solver. Whether it’s determining the cause of a malfunction or figuring out a creative way to access a hard-to-reach space, problem-solving is probably the most enjoyable part of it for me.”

A lifetime resident of the East Bay, Jeremy resides today near Benicia. When he’s not working, he enjoys spending quality time with his two young sons. “My boys and I like going on RV trips and boating adventures together,” he details. “I also enjoy riding my motorcycle and Can-Am racing.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jeremy invokes the age-old Golden Rule. “My staff and I try to treat everyone the same way we’d want to be treated,” he explains. “So, when it comes to our customers’ projects, we take care of them and make sure they’re happy. We take the same detail-oriented approach on every project, regardless of its size, because to us, the customer’s satisfaction is always the top priority.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jeremy says it would be a toss-up between two choices. “I would either rent a motorhome and take my family on a road trip or fly us to Mexico and hang out on the beach. Whichever sounds better at the time—I guess I can’t go wrong either way.”

Ask Me Anything!

A: I like Asian cuisine, particularly Thai and Japanese food.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?
A: Legos.

  • Achieving Energy Independence With a Battery Backup

CONCORD — Here in California, energy independence and electrification are becoming popular concepts among homeowners, especially in regard to solar power. During the last year, PG&E began implementing public safety power shutoffs during periods of high wildfire risk. This created significant challenges for affected homeowners, who in some cases were without power for days at a time. Unsurprisingly, this has increased the interest in and demand for energy independence solutions.

But what does it take to achieve energy independence? Many homeowners assume owning a solar energy system is enough, but this isn’t the case. In order to maintain power during an outage, the addition of a battery backup is required. A battery backup stores energy generated by the solar panels, which can be used to power the home during an outage. A battery backup can also be used during peak times of day when electricity is more expensive, thus lowering energy costs. By adding a battery backup to your solar energy system, you’ll rest easy knowing your lights will stay on when the grid goes down.

A great way to maximize the impact of installing a battery backup is to convert your home to all-electric power, also known as electrification. This will ensure you have access to all appliances and amenities in your home during a power outage. To learn more about energy independence, battery backups and electrification, talk to your local, qualified solar contractor.

  • Planning for Future Energy Needs With Solar

PLEASANT HILL — If you’re planning to add a solar power system to your home, be sure to consider any potential future energy needs you may have. Solar power systems are often designed to supply just enough energy to meet the household’s current needs. The problem is, many homeowners neglect to consider how their energy needs might change five, 10 or 20 years down the road. If additional power is needed in the future, issues can arise if the system isn’t set up for it.

Here are a few things to consider when determining your potential future energy needs:

    • Do you plan on purchasing an electric vehicle? If so, you’ll need to install an electric vehicle charging station in your garage, which will substantially increase your energy usage.
    • Do you plan on installing a swimming pool or spa? Either one of these will require lighting and filtration systems, which will add to your home’s power load.
    • Do you plan on adding to your home’s square footage? This is also likely to increase your home’s energy usage.

These are just a few examples to show why it’s important to consider future energy needs when adding a solar power system. By looking ahead, you can design your system in a way that avoids future problems.

  • Tesla Charging Options

PLEASANT HILL – An important aspect of buying an electric vehicle is determining how you’re going to charge it. When it comes to charging a Tesla, there are two options to consider:

    NEMA 14-50 outlet
Your first option for charging a Tesla is a NEMA 14-50 outlet, which you would have professionally installed in the area where you park your vehicle. The cord set that comes with your car would plug directly into this outlet, which, at 40 amps of power, provides 29 miles of range per hour of charge.

    Tesla wall connector
This additional accessory (available through the manufacturer) offers a couple of advantages. First, it comes with a 25-foot cord, which gives you five more feet than your car’s stock power cord. Second, the wall connector provides 80 amps of supply current, which is double the amperage of the NEMA 14-50 outlet. This doubles your miles of range per hour of charge, from 29 miles to 58. Even better, it’s adjustable, so you can turn it down to 40 amps if you want.

  • The Whole House Fan Advantage

PLEASANT HILL — If you’re looking for a more energy-efficient way to cool your home, a whole house fan might be the solution.

During the summer, it’s common for people to run their air conditioners until late at night, not realizing that it’s actually cooler outside their homes than it is inside. A whole house fan is designed to bring in this cool outdoor air while simultaneously cycling out the warm indoor air. This cools and refreshes the home naturally, rather than artificially as an air condition system does. Additionally, a whole house fan is a far more energy-efficient option: on average, it consumes 65 watts on the low setting and 250 watts on the high setting, which is considerably less than a 10,000-watt air conditioning system.

By installing a whole house fan, you’ll breathe easier in more ways than one: Not only will your air be fresher, you’ll also decrease your carbon footprint and save money on your energy bills.

CONCORD — Jeremy Carlock: Here in California, energy, independence and electrification are becoming popular concepts among homeowners, particularly considering solar and battery backup. PG&E has been doing public safety power shutoffs, which have made it very challenging to keep the lights on and keep a home safe. When going solar and pairing a battery backup, you can keep the lights on.

Many homeowners don’t realize that solar only does not allow the lights to stay on. Converting a home to all electric, also known as electrification is particularly beneficial for homeowners pairing solar and battery backup. This allows them to keep the power on or the lights on during the next power outage. When considering egress and other emergency appliances that may stay on during this power outage and keep your family safe, talk to your local qualified solar contractor about going solar and battery backup.

PLEASANT HILL– Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re thinking about purchasing a Tesla electric car, you’ll need to consider your options in regard to charging. Today we’re in Pleasant Hill with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jeremy Carlock of Got Watts Electric to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeremy Carlock: Electric vehicle charging can be quite complicated these days. For Tesla owners, you get two options. The first option here is a NEMA 14-50 outlet. This outlet would be installed by your local recommended installer. The cord set that comes with your car would plug directly into this outlet and supply current providing this outlet is 40 amps. That would give you 29 miles of range per hour of charge. The second option for the Tesla owner is a Tesla wall connector. This is an additional item purchased through Tesla. The advantage to the wall connector is you get a 25-foot cord, where the stock cord that comes with your car is only 20 feet. Another advantage to this is you get to tune it up to 80 amps of supply current, which will allow 58 miles of range per hour of charge. This can also be tuned down to lower amperages below 40 amps if needed. The same with the stock cable that comes with your car. If you have any more questions, please contact your local recommended installer through Tesla.

PLEASANT HILL — Host, Sarah Rutan: When designing a solar power system for your home, it’s wise to consider both your current and future energy needs. Today we’re in Pleasant Hill with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jeremy Carlock of Got Watts Electric & Solar to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeremy Carlock: Prior to going solar, there are a few things you should consider. One is, do you plan on adding an electric vehicle to your home? If so, that can significantly affect the amount of solar that you need. Do you plan on adding a pool or a spa? These items can affect valuable roof space, and if you have solar already installed, you may not be able to heat one of those. If you plan on adding square footage, that can significantly affect the amount of solar that you need. All of these things need to be take into consideration prior to adding solar. Another big one is, are your electrical panels able to handle the new solar load and any future electrical load? I recommend taking all of these things into consideration prior to going solar.

  • Video: Advantages of a Whole House Fan

    Complete Video Transcription

PLEASANT HILL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re looking for a low-cost, energy-efficient way to cool your home, it’s worthwhile to consider the many benefits of a whole house fan. Today we’re in Pleasant Hill with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jeremy Carlock of Got Watts Electric to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeremy Carlock: If you’re looking for an energy efficient way to cool your whole home, a whole house fan might be the solution for you.

This right here is a whole house fan while on low consumes 65 watts and on high 250 watts. That’s considerably less than an air-conditioning unit. The concept behind a whole house fan is the fan is mounted in the attic just like this picture here. You can see a bigger model here. This is an actual fan. It’s suspended from the roof joists so you get very minimal sound while the fan is running in your home.

Below here is what is mounted in the house. This is a register, and behind that is some dampers. When the fan is turned on, the dampers are open. When the fan is turned off, the dampers close. This creates an insulation rating between the attic space and the home so you get no dust or anything coming back down into the house.

All fans have multiple speeds. This one has a low and a high setting. On low this is 65 watts of energy consumption, and on high this would be 250 watts of energy consumption. This is considerably less than an eight to ten-thousand-watt air conditioning system. The concept behind whole house fans is that you turn the fan on. It’s centralized in the home. You open up a few windows and create a breeze through the home.

Ideally a fan would be good to use in the mornings and in the evenings, when you see a relatively cooler temperature outside. A lot of people that have air conditioning will run till nine/ten o’clock at night, not realizing that it’s actually cooler outside than it is inside their home.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Eric Schaefer

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Eric Schaefer is a comfort control specialist at Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC, a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (925) 268-0666 or by email.

Eric Schaefer: A Double Livelihood

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CONCORD — Until fairly recently, Eric Schaefer was living what some might call a double livelihood, playing an active role in two disparate professional spheres. “I worked as a service director for Porsche for many years while simultaneously pursuing a construction career on the side,” he explains. “My grandfather was a general contractor and a real estate developer, so I got my passion for working on houses from him. In the late ’90s, I started dabbling in heating and cooling as a specialty. Over the following decade, I became more active in the trade, and in 2013, I left my job at Porsche to pursue full-time work as a residential climate control specialist.”

In 2010, Eric met Jeremy Carlock, owner of Got Watts Electric, Solar & HVAC. “I was doing climate control and he was doing electrical and solar, so we would refer work back and forth and subcontract to one another,” he relates. “Eventually, we realized it made sense to bring both of our specialties together under one roof, so I joined his company.”

Today, Eric says his favorite aspects of his job are the challenges and rewards. “I enjoy the challenge of coming up with climate control solutions for our customers. I design every system to last for 20-plus years, so it’s rewarding to know my work will be serving the customer for a generation.”

A resident of Martinez (where he lives with his wife, Tobi), Eric spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy outdoor activities like mountain biking and hiking—preferably at Lake Tahoe, which I consider my home away from home. I’m also an auto racing enthusiast and I’ve raced cars for many years.” Additionally, Eric enjoys spending time with his and Tobi’s four adult children, both casually and at holiday gatherings.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Eric espouses the value of proactive customer care. “I’m never going to sell someone something they don’t need, but I will sell them something they didn’t know they needed,” he says. “When I worked at Porsche, our job was to check each car for things the owner wasn’t aware of and address them before something went wrong. It’s similar with homes—the average homeowner isn’t aware of what they need, whether right now or 20 years down the road. It’s my job to address those needs and provide solutions that give the homeowner long-lasting performance and value.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Eric says he’d move to Lake Tahoe. “I love being up at Tahoe, so if I retired, I’d make it my primary residence instead of just my favorite vacation spot.”

  • Maintaining Your Air Filters

CONCORD — In California, indoor air quality has taken on a new level of importance due to the annual recurrence of wildfires. With all the smoke and ash in the atmosphere, you need to make sure your air filtration system is equipped to effectively remove these materials from the air inside your home. While there are many ways to do this, the simplest one is maintaining your HVAC system’s air filters.

There are many different types of air filters, including replaceable filters, washable filters, micro filters and electronic filters. Whichever type you have, you should know where they’re located (you may have more than one) and how often to change or maintain them. Most replaceable air filters should be changed every 60 days at minimum. If you have washable filters, you should wash them at a similar interval (make sure they’re completely dry before reinstalling them). For electronic filter maintenance, consult the filters’ instruction manual or research instructions online. If you have additional questions about maintaining or upgrading your air filters, consult a local HVAC professional.

CONCORD — Eric Schaefer: Indoor air quality or IAQ has taken on new importance lately, whether it’s seasonal pollens or danders, wildfire, ash, and smoke, or, and bacteria and viruses, filtering these materials out of the air and out of the equipment, that’s moving the air through our house is important to know about and to maintain throughout the year. Some common types of filters or indoor air quality devices that you may have in your home would be the typical washable, micro filter, or some degree of replaceable paper filter, or our personal favorites that we incorporate in our electrification projects and electronic air cleaner of some sort.

Whatever type you have, you should know where they’re located and how many you have as there may be more than one and be aware of them, service them, change them regularly. We recommend a minimum of every 60 days for the replaceable types. Washable types, you want to make sure that they’re completely dry before reinstalling them and an electronic type should have an instruction manual possibly available online through video. If you have any questions about these, any type or upgrading to any of these types, you can call us anytime or call your local professional.

They are very customer service oriented, and if you have any issues, they work hard to resolve them. They communicate well and are patient with all of your questions. They have many different people on the staff that have different expertise to help you.

I liked that they were a small family owned business that seemed to really care about their customers and the quality of their work.
