Greenwood Electric, Inc. is a full-service electrical contractor that specializes in lighting design and electrical installation for small businesses and residential clients. “We do everything from installing light switches in receptacles to rewiring 100,000-square-foot buildings,” says owner Joseph Greenwood. Because of its expertise and reputation, Greenwood Electric has been cited by several communities for excellent work and has been nominated as a preferred contractor in Ross, Piedmont, Fairfax, and San Anselmo.

Service and quality control are cornerstones of Greenwood Electric’s business philosophy. “I was raised with old school values,” says Mr. Greenwood. “I understand people are spending money to buy our services, so I want to make sure they’re as satisfied as they can possibly be.”

Mr. Greenwood says his company takes good care of its clients. “We show up on time and follow up throughout projects. Clients know I’m always around–I may have another electrician on a particular job, but I’ll make regular calls to check in on the customer and make sure the work is going smoothly.” After a project is finished and an invoice goes out, Greenwood Electric continues its follow-up to make sure clients are pleased with the job in every way.

Mr. Greenwood believes in providing personalized customer service that transcends normal expectations. “I’ll provide free designs for clients,” he explains, “and I can steer them in the right direction if they need other consultants. Industry Info

To find a good electrical contractor, talk to people who have had work done on their homes or businesses. “Ask if they liked the company and if they’d hire it again,” advises Joseph Greenwood, owner of Greenwood Electric, Inc. “If they say they would, I’d make the call.”

Check with objective ratings services to determine if the company has a good reputation. “Take a look at businesses that have been around for a while,” says Mr. Greenwood. “The ones that have their names on their trucks are usually legitimate.” Always check with the California State Licensing Board to make sure the company you’re hiring holds an active license and is bonded and insured.

Once you choose an experienced electrical contractor with whom you feel comfortable, consider them a valuable source of information regarding household safety, conserving energy and saving money on your electric bill. Take the following tips as a starting point:

• Schedule a professional electrical audit to determine ways to save energy and money and uncover any safety hazards before they become a problem.
• Always check to make sure the GFI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) receptacles in your kitchen and bathroom are operating correctly. GFIs are designed to prevent electrical shocks in wet locations.
• Change the batteries in your smoke detectors twice a year—during Daylight Savings Time in the spring and Pacific Standard Time in the fall.
• Use plug strips for phantom loads. For example, if you have a stereo or television that’s plugged into a strip, you can simply turn the strip off and eliminate phantom loads. Over time, this can add up to significant savings on your electric bill.
• In each room of the house, install one switch that controls all the phantom loads in that room.
• Put a dimmer on a light switch to save 10 percent on the light’s energy output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start a job?

A: Usually, we can start almost immediately.

Q: How much will it cost?

A: It depends on the scope of the job. Our rate is $90 an hour, and we bid the work based on that rate plus the cost of the materials.

Q: Do you ever recommend that customers buy their own materials?

A: Because there are so many necessary parts, I don’t usually recommend it unless they have some knowledge of electrical work. However, I’ll work with them if they choose to buy the materials themselves.

Q: How long does a job usually take?

A: It depends on the job. With more than 30 years of experience, I’m very good at accurately estimating time and cost. We run our business based on rigorous honesty, so I tell people the truth about how much time it’s going to take.

Q: Do you give any discounts?

A: We give a senior citizen discount and a discount to anybody who mentions Diamond Certified.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Joe Greenwood

Joe Greenwood: An Electric Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Expert Reporter

SAN RAPHAEL — While working as a laborer on a construction site, Joe Greenwood was presented with an unexpected opportunity that eventually led to a lifelong career. “When I was 18 years old, I was working for a general contractor as a jack-of-all-trades, doing everything from painting to carpentry,” he remembers. “One day, we had an electrician on site—a man I knew from church named Al. Out of the blue, Al asked if I’d be interested in apprenticing with him to learn to be an electrician. I replied, ‘Sure, I’d love to.’”

Following his apprenticeship, Joe gained further experience by consecutively working for three different electrical contractors. While most people would’ve struck out on their own at this point, Joe instead decided to increase the depth of his industry knowledge through formal education. “I was thinking about going into lighting design and sales, so I went back to college and majored in managerial psychology,” he explains. “After earning my degree, I considered going back to get my master’s degree, but I was so wiped out from the previous couple of years that I decided to take a break from school. Soon after, I got my license and started my own electrical company in 1991.”

Today, as owner of Greenwood Electric, Inc., Joe says his favorite part of his job is giving people a better impression of his industry. “Like many trades, the electrical industry often gets a bad reputation, which is why I love working with my customers and gaining their trust. By providing excellent service, I hope to leave each of my clients with a positive feeling about their interaction with my company.”

A lifelong resident of Marin County (where he lives with his wife, Cara), Joe expresses his appreciation for the well-rounded character of the Bay Area. “I like living in the San Francisco Bay Area,” he affirms. “It’s diverse and forward-thinking, and there’s always something going on.”

Outside of work, Joe spends as much time as possible at high altitudes. “I’m a pilot and fly as often as I can—usually on the weekends, but sometimes during the week if I get a chance,” he explains. “I fly both a single-engine and multi-engine airplane, and I’m currently in the process of earning my commercial rating.” Joe also enjoys playing golf, going on mountain hikes with his dog, Beau, and hanging out with family and friends.

In regard to his personal career, Joe espouses the importance of taking care of both his customers and himself. “I treat my customers the way I’d want to be treated, which is why I make it a priority to return phone calls, listen to their needs and give them what they want,” he says. “However, I also make it a point to take care of myself. Running a small business is pretty much non-stop, but there are times when I need to take a break and re-energize. That way, I can make sure I have enough energy to give my customers the best possible service.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Joe says he’d take his aviation avocation to new heights. “After I earn my commercial rating, the next thing I want to do is become a Certified Flight Instructor and get into teaching. So, if I were to retire tomorrow, I’d probably redirect all my efforts toward that goal and start passing my piloting knowledge and experience onto others.”

A: Robert Duvall.

  • A Foolproof Way to Reset a Circuit Breaker

SAN RAFAEL — A common electrical issue is when the power goes out in a certain area of the home. More often than not, this is due to a tripped circuit breaker, which is something you can easily fix yourself by going out to your breaker box and resetting the breaker in question.

This may sound simple, but in some instances, it can get more complicated than you might expect. Consider the following scenario: You reset the circuit breaker and the power doesn’t come back on, but when an electrician comes out and resets it, the power “magically” returns, leaving you scratching your head. In most cases, the problem is the circuit breakers weren’t labeled properly, which caused you to mistakenly reset the wrong one. It’s an easy mistake to make, but it’s also an expensive one because it results in an unnecessary service fee.

Fortunately, there’s a simple way to avoid this error: reset all of your circuit breakers. After turning them all off, wait until you hear a mechanical click and then turn them back on. By resetting all of your breakers, you rule out the possibility of mistakenly resetting the wrong one. If you still don’t have power after attempting this step, it’s time to call an electrician.

Expert video tip
  • Video: Troubleshooting a Power Outage

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN RAFAEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: In the event of a power outage, there’s a simple way to test if the cause was a tripped circuit breaker. Today we’re in San Rafael with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Joe Greenwood of Greenwood Electric to learn more about this useful method.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Joe Greenwood: Okay, so, today what I’d like to suggest is how to troubleshoot a circuit breaker or a faulted circuit. Often, we get phone calls from people, their kitchen doesn’t work, their refrigerator’s out or the receptacles in their bedroom don’t work, and they say that they’ve actually checked the circuit breaker and then we go out there and we have to reset the circuit breaker and it comes magically back on.

So, what I like to suggest to people before we come out, and it saves them the cost of a service call, is to go to all your circuit breakers if you have something that’s off. If it’s not labeled, turn them all, all the way off until you hear a mechanical click. Then, turn them back on and when you feel a mechanical click, then the circuit breaker has re – reengineered itself, it’s back on. Then, you can test your power. If you still don’t have power after doing that, then give us a call.
