Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for stone, tile and grout cleaning companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Grout Works Bay Area, the key to keeping clients happy is helping them save money by restoring the appearance of their old grouted surfaces. “Most people want to rip out their floors or countertops and replace them because the grout lines are so ugly, but when I do my process, I can make those surfaces look new again,” says owner Michal Johnson. “The change is unbelievable, and my customers really appreciate having that option.”

Grout Works Bay Area has been cleaning and repairing grout for residential and commercial clients in Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Joaquin, Sonoma, Alameda, and Napa Counties since 2011. In addition to its comprehensive grout expertise (which includes color sealing to match the décor of each customer’s home), the company performs shower restorations, cleans and seals natural stone surfaces, and more.

Unlike larger grout cleaning companies whose sizable workload can make it difficult to maintain effective quality control standards, Grout Works Bay Area utilizes its small size to concentrate on giving its clients exactly what they want and expect. “As the owner-operator, my name is on every job, so I always put the quality of my work and materials first,” says Mr. Johnson. “I pay attention to details and go the extra mile to make sure each project is done correctly.”

Ultimately, Mr. Johnson sees Grout Works Bay Area’s singular focus on grout and tile cleaning as its most important attribute. The company has even created its own silicon-based color sealer that permanently seals grout lines to keep them clean and looking like new. “Few companies have the type of grout cleaning experience I have,” affirms Mr. Johnson. “I take care of my customers and make sure they’re happy, and I let the quality of my work speak for itself.”

Industry Info

When it comes to getting your grout cleaned, it’s best to hire a specialist.

Lots of companies advertise grout cleaning as a side service to their main offerings, so many homeowners tack on grout cleaning when they’re having other surfaces cleaned. But it’s rare that cleaning companies can provide the type of service that leaves grout truly fresh and looking like new. So, it’s no surprise that many homeowners get frustrated and decide to tear out their floors, countertops, and bathroom tile in order to get their homes looking and feeling clean again.

However, according to Michal Johnson, owner of Grout Works Bay Area in Antioch, those same homeowners could have saved a lot of money and received better service if they hired an actual grout contractor with the expertise and equipment to do the job correctly. “Companies that offer grout cleaning as a side service don’t have the experience or knowledge to properly care for grout,” he says. “To clean grout properly and ensure it stays clean, you need to use the right chemicals and techniques.”

While other companies say they can clean grout, Mr. Johnson says their equipment and cleaning solutions are often lacking. “Most use rotating brushes that don’t properly clean grout. It’s much better to use grout brushes that get deep into grout lines.”

Mr. Johnson says a grout cleaning company can even tackle tough jobs like kitchen grout that’s covered in grease and cooking remnants. “Heavy degreasers can clean grout without the dirt penetrating back into the surface. That leaves grout lines looking like new without the need for replacement.”

Instead of relying on other professionals for grout cleaning and restoration services, savvy consumers do what experts recommend and look to professional grout contractors. This way, they save money and end up with cleaner grout that looks better for longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you have the experience to do my job correctly?
A: Yes. I’ve been in this industry for more than 15 years. I’m licensed and insured, I have good references, and I’m happy to give you details about how I’ll perform the work for your specific job.

Q: Can you help me with a unique project?
A: I have experience doing most kinds of jobs, so I can probably do yours. If you want a reference for a particular task, I can connect you with past clients who have hired me for similar work.

Q: Why shouldn’t I go the cheap route with my grout?
A: Better products will last longer if they’re applied properly, so you’ll get more value than something cheaper that will only last a year or so.

Q: Do all cleaning companies provide the same level of grout service?
A: Companies that offer grout cleaning as a side service, like some carpet cleaners, don’t have the experience or knowledge that I have. I use the right chemicals and equipment to get into grout lines and properly clean them. I also know how to use heavy degreasers when necessary.

Michal Johnson: A Hands-On Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ANTIOCH — After working in the petrochemical industry for nearly three decades, Michal Johnson decided to pursue a more hands-on career. “During my 28 years in the petrochemical industry, I traveled a lot and worked in oil refineries all over the nation,” he recounts. “After being transferred to Northern California in the early 2000s, I began thinking seriously about starting my own business. I love working with my hands and had accumulated a lot of home improvement experience from flipping investment properties. I particularly enjoyed working with tile, so that seemed like a good thing to specialize in. I started my own tiling business in 2011 and have been doing it ever since.”

Today, as owner of Grout Works Bay Area, Michal says his favorite part of his job is the artistry involved. “I get excited about doing a tile project and enjoy watching it go from the demolition stage to a beautiful finished product. I also love seeing the expression on the customer’s face when they see it for the first time—that brings me joy.”

Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Michal now resides in the East Bay Area. Outside of work, he engages in a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy traveling, listening to music, going to the movies and spending time with friends,” he details. “I have a lot of family and friends back in Baton Rouge, so I visit there fairly often to see them and get some of that good Cajun-Creole cooking.”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Michal espouses the importance of integrity. “My main philosophy is to be open, honest and true to my word,” he affirms. “With every job, I aim to give the customer 110 percent. By doing my best and doing right by my clients, I’m able to achieve a level of success that I can be proud of.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Italy.

Q: What kinds of movies do you like?

A: Comedy, drama and action.

Q: If you could instantly pick up a new skill, what would you choose?

A: I’d like to be a stock market expert.

Q: What was your first job?

A: When I was 12, I got a job at the community supermarket cleaning floors and stocking shelves.

Q: What styles of music do you enjoy?

A: Mainly R&B, jazz and gospel.

  • How to Prevent Soap Scum in Your Shower

ANTIOCH — One of the biggest problems with showers is keeping them clean. Over time, shower tiles accumulate soap scum, which can be hard to remove. What makes soap scum so difficult to deal with is the fact that it develops gradually—in most cases, it’s not noticeable until there’s a substantial amount of buildup. Fortunately, by adopting a simple maintenance ritual, you can prevent your shower from getting to this point.

By running a squeegee over your shower tiles after every shower, you’ll remove the leftover moisture and soap residue that lead to the formation of soap scum. If you don’t have a squeegee, you can use a towel; however, since a squeegee doesn’t need to be washed, it’s a little more convenient. I recommend buying one at your local hardware store and keeping it in your shower so you have it on hand when you need it. This simple step only takes a minute and it’ll save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

ANTIOCH — Host, Sarah Rutan: Any shower accumulates soap scum over time, but with a simple step, you can keep yours squeaky clean. Today we’re in Antioch with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Michal Johnson of Grout Works Bay Area to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Michal Johnson: The biggest problem with showers, it’s maintaining. Showers, over a period of time, accumulates soap scums. Sometime, all depends on the color of the shower and the tile you may not notice it, but all showers accumulate soap scum. So best way to maintain a shower is to utilize a squeegee once you get though showering and squeegee it down to remove most of the soap scums. And if you don’t have a squeegee, just take a big towel and just wipe it dry after each use.
