Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Gruber Painting, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: draw upon its professionalism and experience to provide them with the best possible quality. “We know people have a lot of options when it comes to painters, so we focus on setting ourselves apart through the quality of our work and customer service,” says owner Joel Gruber. “At the end of the day, our clients want a smooth, stress-free experience, and that’s exactly what we provide.”

Gruber Painting has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties since 2009. The company has the in-house capabilities to paint all types of surfaces (including cabinetry), and it backs each project with a comprehensive five-year warranty.

Unlike less experienced painting contractors that take on as many jobs as possible and create scheduling issues for their clients as a result, Gruber Painting focuses on fulfilling each customer’s needs in a timely manner. “Most people need their painting projects completed by a certain date, so we always make sure we’re on schedule with every aspect of our work,” says Mr. Gruber. “Ultimately, our goal is to achieve a high level of quality without adding any stress for the client, and the best way to accomplish that is to prioritize staying on schedule.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Gruber Painting is its company-wide dedication to quality control, which Mr. Gruber says is important for achieving first-rate results. “At the end of every project, we do a walkthrough to look for any necessary touch-ups and make sure the client is happy with our work. We even give them a handwritten review form that includes our in-house rating system and a comment card, which allows us to further confirm their satisfaction.”

Industry Info

Choosing the right paint color for your house is all about personal preference.
Your home’s architectural design can help dictate which paint colors will fit best, but ultimately, it’s a matter of taste. Some people prefer to “warm” their living spaces with oranges, reds and pinks, while others prefer the calm, serene effect of blues, greens and purples. However, even white paint can take on warm or cool tones depending on the subtle colors that are mixed in, so in order to achieve the exact look you want, you should consider working with a professional color consultant.

There are thousands of pre-mixed paint shades available to purchase at retail paint stores, but you don’t have to choose a color that already exists or settle for a shade that doesn’t quite match your existing paint. Visit your local paint store or hire a painting contractor to receive custom color formulation and color matching services.

If you find the perfect color at a paint store, get a sample and write down the brand, grade and color so your painting contractor can find that exact shade. Also, after you’ve made your choice, look at the paint sample in the natural light of your home during different times of the day to determine if it’s the right fit before painting begins. Ask your contractor to apply a sample in the room to be painted so you can live with the color for a while and confirm you’ve made the right choice.

If environmental responsibility is important to you, consider choosing a paint product that’s low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Not only are these paints more environmentally friendly, they’re also relatively odorless, which can be a big benefit to people who have to live in their homes while painting is underway.

“There are also many oil-water hybrid products coming out that provide a harder, more durable finish while still falling into that low-VOC category,” adds Joel Gruber, owner of Gruber Painting in Mountain View. “In fact, one of my favorite all-purpose primers to come out in recent years is an oil-water hybrid. That type of paint technology is constantly improving—it provides the same quality as oil finishes from the ’50s and ’60s, but with environmentally-friendly benefits.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to paint my house?
A: It depends on several factors, but once we schedule an onsite estimate appointment and look at your house, we’ll be able to give you a proposal based on the scope of work.

Q: Do you offer a warranty on your work?
A: Yes, we provide a five-year warranty on every project. Once we perform the estimate, we’ll send you a digital copy of the warranty along with our proposal.

Q: Why do I need primer?
A: It’s simple: primer sticks to things, and paint sticks to primer. So, if we’re working on a previously painted surface, we don’t need to use primer because the new paint will just stick to the old paint. On the other hand, any unpainted surface needs a coat of primer before new paint is applied.

Q: What type of paint sheen do you recommend?
A: When it comes to paint sheens, you have a wide spectrum to choose from, from flat to gloss and everything in between. Different types of sheen work on different surfaces. For example, a flat sheen provides a truer color, but if the surface gets dirty and you scrub it, you’re going to leave marks, so you should take that into account before making your choice. For areas like doors and trim, we always recommend at least satin sheen.

Q: Do I need to be home throughout the course of my exterior painting project?
A: No. We’d like you to be home at the beginning of the project so you can point out any areas of concern and we can make sure we’re all on the same page, but after that, we can handle the actual painting process and you can go about your normal routine. The only reason we would need you to be home is to paint entry doors, because we need to open the doors to paint the edges. However, we usually do that on the last day of the project.

Joel Gruber: Choosing a Focus

By James Florence, Senior Writer

SAN JOSE — After years of splitting his livelihood between two seasonal jobs, Joel Gruber came to a point where he had to choose between a paintbrush and a snowboard. “Over a six-year period following high school, I worked two jobs,” he explains. “During the summer, I was a painter, and during the winter, I was a ski lift operator up at Squaw Valley. It was an awesome time. Eventually, however, I realized I needed to choose a focus. Ultimately, I chose to go with painting. Since I had a lot of experience, I decided my best move would be to start my own business. When I started in 2009, I was basically a one-man operation; today, we have six crews going, so it has grown quite a bit over the years.”

Today, as owner of Gruber Painting, Joel says his favorite part of his job is hearing from happy customers. “As a painter, customer satisfaction has always been my main priority. Since I don’t do much of the actual painting anymore, I’m very focused on hiring the right people and training them to my standards. I love it when I get a call from a customer who tells me, ‘Everything is beautiful and you guys were so nice to work with!’”

A resident of Mountain View, Joel spends most of his time outside of work with his wife, Devan, and their two daughters. “My girls are still young, so my life pretty much revolves around them at the moment. Occasionally, I’ll fit in a round of golf, but for the most part it’s just family life. That’s what I look forward to at the end of the workday.”

When asked about a professional philosophy, Joel emphasizes the importance of employee care. “It goes without saying that you have to take care of your customers, but it’s also crucial to take care of your employees,” he says. “As a business grows, it becomes more challenging to maintain the quality of service. For us, the key has been to focus on our employees, because I know that if we take care of them, they’ll take care of our customers. That’s why we put things in place like health care and 401(k) benefits—they help us attract people who are serious about their careers as painters. Our clients are always happy with the quality of our work and the way our crew members treat them, so it has definitely paid off.”

When asked what his life might look like after his eventual retirement, Joel says he’ll head back to the slopes. “I always enjoyed being a ski lift operator, so when I retire someday, I’ll probably go back to doing that. That’s my retirement plan: live in the mountains, work a minimum wage job and just have fun.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Amarin Thai Cuisine in Mountain View.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Hawaii.

Q: What’s your favorite TV show?

A: “Star Trek: Voyager.”

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?

A: Snowboarding at Squaw Valley. During the six years I was there, I definitely did some crazy stuff. Busted my knee, smashed my face up…I broke myself a lot up there.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

A: Relax on the couch and play video games with my daughter.

  • Choosing the Right White for Your Trim

SAN JOSE — When it comes to choosing interior paint, most homeowners tend to focus on wall and accent colors, but it’s also important to consider trim color. Although trim is generally white, choosing the right hue of white is no simple matter.

From cooler whites to warmer whites to off-whites and everything in between, there are countless variations of white paint to choose from. Additionally, when choosing white trim, you need to account for all the existing whites in your home, like white doors, windows, ceilings, cabinets and appliances. Furthermore, white paint can take on warm or cool tones depending on the subtle hues that are mixed in, so it’s important to look at your trim in the context of your wall and accent colors.

Choosing the right type of white paint for your trim isn’t easy, but when you find the perfect hue, it’ll help tie the entire project together and achieve the feel you want for your space.

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN JOSE — Joel Gruber: One of the most important parts of starting your paint job is getting the right colors, and while everybody wants to go straight to their wall colors and accent colors, we like to remind people that it’s always best to make sure you have the right trim color, which is generally white, both on inside and out. It’s good to get the right white color because from cooler whites to warmer whites, off-white to more of a pure white, there’s so many variations there, and by getting that white color to accent all of your other main body colors, it really helps to tie the whole project together and get the feel you want for your space.
