Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for fencing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Guy’s Fencing, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: focus on providing quality throughout every aspect of every job, from the choice of materials to the method of construction. “We use the best wood and building methods to ensure our fences are as durable and beautiful as possible,” says owner Guy Aranda. “For example, the most common type of fence we build is a wooden board-on-board fence, and we frame it differently than most companies by adding a two-by-six cap on top. Not only does this provide extra support and strength, but it looks better, too.”

Guy’s Fencing has been building, installing and repairing fences, decks, gates, trellises, planter boxes and more for residential clients throughout the Bay Area since 2001. The family-owned and operated company also stains and pressure washes wood structures, and it provides free estimates for projects of all sizes.

Unlike less experienced fencing companies that undervalue the importance of environmental responsibility, Guy’s Fencing implements a variety of Green business practices in its daily operations, including acquiring all its wood from local suppliers who use sustainable methods to produce lumber. “Operating with environmental sensitivity isn’t just helpful to the Earth–it also supports the local economy by providing jobs for people in the community,” says Mr. Aranda. “Today’s consumers expect environmentally-conscious behavior from the companies they hire, and that’s exactly what we provide.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Guy’s Fencing is its highly skilled and experienced technicians, many of whom have been working in the fencing industry for more than 20 years. “Our foremen have spent the last two decades learning the best techniques that make for longer-lasting fences, like using bigger posts and digging deeper post holes, and they apply those techniques to every fence project,” explains Mr. Aranda. “Our philosophy is, ‘Do it once; do it right.'”

Industry Info

If you’re planning to install a fence on your property, make sure you choose the right building material to meet your needs. According to Guy Aranda, owner of Guy’s Fencing, Inc. in Windsor, one of the most important decisions to make when taking on a fence project is choosing the right type of wood. “I usually recommend pressure-treated wood for fence posts—it’s Douglas fir that has been chemically treated to resist insects and rotting, and it typically lasts 30 to 40 years,” he explains. “Sometimes people have concerns about pressure-treated wood because arsenic was once used in the treatment, but that’s no longer the case. Wood that has been pressure-treated is perfectly safe, long-lasting and relatively inexpensive.”
When it comes to fence boards, Mr. Aranda recommends using redwood instead of cedar. “The most common choice for boards is cedar, but it isn’t really a good fencing material because it tends to twist and warp,” he says. “Try finding redwood products made by a local supplier who utilizes sustainable business practices. You can also try composite decking—it’s made from recycled plastics, so it’s both environmentally-friendly and long-lasting.”
Dealing with a damaged fence can be tricky, as homeowners often have to weigh the cost of repairs against the expected life of their fences. Mr. Aranda says he often recommends avoiding repairs in favor of full replacement. “If your fence has minor damage to a few boards or posts, that’s one thing, but if there’s extensive damage or deterioration, it’s usually less expensive to replace the entire thing. Also, if the whole fence is relatively old, the repair won’t last that long, so it’s like you’re paying twice.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a permit to build a fence?

A: Regulations vary from city to city, but you usually don’t need a permit to build a fence as long as it’s not attached to your house. Your homeowner’s association may have its own rules, but we’ll let you know the specifics before any work begins.

Q: How soon can you get here if I need my fence repaired?

A: Generally, we can come take care of a repair within two days of your initial call. If it’s an emergency and the fence has to be repaired right away, we can usually shift our schedule to make it work.

Q: What are the benefits of using pressure-treated wood to build a fence?

A: Pressure¬-treated wood lasts longer and costs less than redwood or cedar. Essentially, it’s Douglas fir that’s chemically treated to last 30 to 40 years, so it’s a real money saver in the long run.

Q: Do you build chain link fences?

A: We occasionally build chain link fences, but our main focus is building wood fences.

Q: Can you install a security gate on my property?

A: Yes.

Q: Do you provide free estimates?

A: Yes.

He does other things besides fencing, and I did not know that. When he puts in Trex decking, he installs it so there are no fasteners displayed.

They are very prompt, they are very good, and the wood is special made, shipped down from Ukiah, and it has extra thickness.

That they do quality work, but wary of the contract. It felt like they asked for money beyond what was written in the contract, but we worked it out, and they completed the job.
