Hassler provides a wide range of HVAC and home performance services, from maintenance, repairs and complete system replacements to energy efficiency upgrades such as air draft sealing, crawl space moisture treatment systems and insulation installation. Hassler is a participating contractor in PG&E’s Energy Upgrade California Advanced Home Upgrade program, which offers homeowners up to $6,500 rebates for home efficiency improvements. Hassler takes a scientific, “whole house” approach to improve its customers’ indoor health, energy efficiency and home comfort.

CFO Tim Hassler says Hassler’s ability to act as both a full-service HVAC contractor and a home performance company has been a crucial aspect of its success. “It’s rare to find a contractor that handles both sides. Our clients call us and refer us to others because they know we’re passionate about helping people optimize their energy efficiency and improve their home comfort and health. We offer the highest value in the industry because we’re able to adapt our services to each unique situation.”

Hassler’s experienced installation and service technicians are continually trained on how to educate clients about their homes. “Many homes in the Bay Area are not as healthy as they should be,” says Mr. Hassler. “One common problem is poor attic and crawl space ventilation, which can be easily fixed or mitigated in most cases with proper diagnoses and implementation.”

Industry Info

If you’re a homeowner, consider the benefits of an energy audit. Home energy audits survey the use of energy in a home by showing where energy is lost through inadequate insulation, duct cracks, ventilation problems, faulty HVAC systems, old appliances, and other systems and materials within the home. A good home energy audit will culminate with a final analysis or report of the findings and provide you with a suggested list of repairs, additions or upgrades that will help your house use energy more efficiently and create a more comfortable indoor environment.

“A lot of homeowners are starting to realize the importance of home energy efficiency and indoor air quality,” says Michael Hassler, co-owner of Hassler Heating & Air Conditioning in El Cerrito. “Evaluating and fixing energy efficiency problems can save you a lot of money and greatly improve your quality of life, and that all starts with a formal home energy audit that’s conducted by a knowledgeable company.”

Home energy audits may include a combination of a walkthrough visual inspection that looks for cracks or faults in windows, doors, skylights, walls, ceilings and other areas of the building envelope. It may also include an evaluation of the appliances and systems present in the home. Some home energy auditors may also view utility records and use specialized equipment to test for air leaks, roof and shading concerns, and customer behavior.

Home energy audits are usually a wise investment, especially for homeowners who live in older homes, feel that their systems are running inefficiently or are uncomfortable in certain areas of their homes due to inefficient heating and cooling. Home energy audits performed by qualified companies can highlight energy loss and inefficient systems and suggest fixes to these problems, which can result in lower utility bills, a more comfortable home and healthier family members.

“Home performance repairs are about more than just installing new heating systems,” says Tim Hassler, CFO of Hassler Heating & Air Conditioning. “Companies can now provide air sealing that prevents ventilation systems from taking in bad air from crawlspaces or attics and dispersing it throughout the home. Also, good contractors can improve indoor air quality while repairing or replacing heating systems, which improves efficiency and health.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I improve the air quality inside my home?

A: We offer more than a dozen solutions for indoor air quality. We’ll give you a list of all the options that are available to you and help you make a decision that meets your particular needs and budget.

Q: Can you balance the temperature in my home if I have rooms that are too hot or too cold?

A: Yes. Uneven temperature usually indicates a ductwork balancing issue, and we can help with that. Our general contracting license allows us to work on ventilation, insulation, ductwork, HVAC units and other components that might contribute to your rooms being too hot or too cold.

Q: Is replacing my HVAC system my only option for fixing temperature inconsistencies inside my home?

A: No. Some companies tell their customers that their only option is to replace their HVAC systems, but we don’t believe in saddling our clients with extra costs if there are other options. We’ll perform an evaluation of your home and look at all the other factors that contribute to rooms being too hot or too cold, and we can often find a different solution that doesn’t require you to replace your current HVAC system.

Q: Can you reassure me if I’m nervous about hiring a contractor?

A: Yes, you can call us and we’ll talk to you about your specific situation so you feel more comfortable. We’re good at making connections with our clients, and we can educate you about your situation with just a 15-minute phone call. We’ll reassure you and get you excited about the idea of improving your home’s energy performance.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Tim Hassler

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Tim Hassler: A Brotherly Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

EL CERRITO — Tim Hassler used to have a fruitful career in the biotech industry, but when his brother suggested they join forces in the HVAC field, he knew it was a good opportunity. “I was working as a regional manager for a service company in the biotech field,” he recounts. “My brother, Mike, founded Hassler Heating & Air Conditioning in 1999 and the business was growing a lot, so we began talking about partnering up. Not only did it offer a chance for me to progress from management to ownership, I was also excited to get into an industry that focused on improving home performance.”

Today, as CFO of Hassler Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., Tim says his past management experience comes into play in the company’s day-to-day operations. “Right now we’re up to five installation teams, so between scheduling, pulling permits and completing jobs in a timely manner, there are a lot of logistical challenges. Fortunately, that happens to be one of my strengths, so I enjoy coordinating things so our operations run smoothly and efficiently.” Tim also likes working alongside his two stepsons, Paul and Chris. “Paul is one of our energy auditors and Chris is a service technician. They’re not just family; they’re great employees as well.”

Originally from Truckee, Tim now resides in Marin County with his wife, Tamara, where he expresses his appreciation for the region’s natural beauty. “I’m a big hiker and runner, so I really enjoy all the nature trails and open spaces in this area. The Mt. Tamalpais Watershed and Point Reyes are great places to spend time, especially with family, so I feel really blessed to live here.”

In his professional life, Tim espouses the importance of keeping customers satisfied. “Our goal is to give our customers quality products and great service,” he affirms. “We go the extra mile to provide each customer with a good experience, and even though that sometimes affects our bottom line, it’s crucial to our long-term success.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Tim says he’d take a breather. “I’d probably take a nice, relaxing vacation and do some traveling. My brother and I both work six and sometimes seven days a week, so it’d be great to have a chance to slow down and just breathe. Right now, we’re trying to put systems in place and get the right personnel so we can do that.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: New Zealand.

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?
A: The Oakland A’s, the Oakland Raiders and, as a UC Berkeley graduate, the Cal Bears.

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Definitely coffee.

Q: Ever read a book more than once?
A: “Hawaii” by James Michener.

Q: What was your favorite video game as a child?
A: It’s a tie between “Defender” and “Donkey Kong.”

  • Going Above Minimum Standards with Air Filters

EL CERRITO — Some people think air filters are all the same, but this is far from the case. While the heating and cooling systems in many homes have standard, one-inch fiberglass filters, the reality is that these do little to improve indoor air quality—they’re only good for filtering out very large airborne particles. To get better filtration for your HVAC system, consider upgrading to a MERV 13 air filter. This four-inch pleated filter removes particles down to the level of viruses and bacterium, which makes it at least 60 times more effective than a standard filter.

In addition to the quality of the filter you choose, another consideration is how often you replace it. Depending on how frequently you run your HVAC system, your filter may need to be changed anywhere from once a year to every couple of months. To get an idea of an appropriate replacement interval, periodically look at your filter and take note of how fast it gets dirty. By maintaining a clean filter at all times, your home’s air will be cleaner and your HVAC system will operate more efficiently, which will save you money on your utility bills.

Expert video tip
  • Video: Assessing Filter Options

    Complete Video Transcription

EL CERRITO — Host, Sarah Rutan: In maintaining your HVAC system, there are multiple options for filters you can use. Today, we’re in El Cerrito with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Tim Hassler of Hassler Heating & Air Conditioning to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Tim Hassler: Until recently, it was industry standard to install these one-inch fiberglass filters for your heating system. These filters do have some problems. They are very inefficient, they are really only good at filtering out very large particles.

This is actually an example of a Merv 13 filter that we recommend upgrading to. It’s a four inch pleated filter and it does an excellent job of filtering out most dust particles and pollen. At least 60 times more efficient in filtering out particles.

For those of you that have problems with allergies, you might want to consider an air purifier. This is an example of one and it has a pleated filter and an electrostatic filter so this does an excellent job of filtering out down to the size of viruses and even bacteria.

Another important consideration is to make sure you do change your filter regularly. If you are using the system a lot, you may have to change the filter as often as once every one or two months. If you use it very rarely, maybe its once a year but its something you should monitor because the system is going to operate much better if you do have a clear filter.
