Company Philosophy

“Our company works on 100 percent customer satisfaction, so we never consider a job complete until the client is completely happy. By paying attention to their needs and providing them with top-quality work, we’re able to deliver exactly what they need.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for air duct cleaning companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For HSR, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: always put their needs first, no matter what. “We’re very cautious about making sure our customers are informed and relaxed,” says owner Rafi Benbenishti. “We operate on 100 percent customer satisfaction, so we don’t leave a job unless the client is completely happy.”

HSR has been cleaning air ducts and dryer vents, installing and removing insulation, and providing other services that improve indoor air quality for residential and commercial clients in Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, and Marin Counties since 2011. The company also performs exterior home services like pressure washing and gutter cleaning, and its customers can sign up for maintenance programs that allow them to book seasonal work that fits with their schedules.

Unlike less experienced air duct cleaning companies that take a “hands-off” approach to communicating with their customers, HSR takes the time to explain every step of its work. “We don’t just come in, do our job and leave—we talk to the client and let them know how to avoid potential issues in the future,” says Mr. Benbenishti. “We give our customers all the attention and information they need to make smart decisions.”

Another distinguishing feature of HSR is the state-of-the-art tools and equipment it uses on every job. “We use the best machines on the market and the right techniques for each project,” affirms Mr. Benbenishti. “For example, with air duct cleaning, some companies use negative pressure to pull out the dust while others use running brushes. Those methods are fine for basic maintenance, but they’re not as effective. We use a very powerful machine with rotating brushes that uses vacuum pressure at the same time. It sucks out the debris and leaves the ducts cleaner, but it doesn’t damage ducts like other machines can.”

Industry Info

Don’t ignore your home’s air ducts.

If your home has a built-in heating, cooling or ventilation system, it means you’re also the proud owner of air ducts. And while they’re likely out of sight, out of mind, there’s a big reason you shouldn’t forget about them: healthy air ducts mean a healthier home.

Every year, dust builds up inside your air ducts, which can cause leaks and slow down your system,” explains Rafi Benbenishti, owner of HSR in Martinez. “When your air ducts are cleaned regularly, your entire HVAC system stays cleaner. Every time you turn on your system, you’re getting clean air flow in your home without dust, allergens, bacteria and other buildup that can exacerbate allergies, headaches, and other problems. It also helps your HVAC system run more efficiently and keeps it in good repair.”

Mr. Benbenishti and other experts say most homeowners and business owners should have their air ducts cleaned once a year. However, in homes with pets or smokers, in dusty or high-pollution areas, if HVAC filters get dirty very fast, or if dust or debris is visibly building up inside the ducts, it’s smart to have them cleaned several times a year. Also, if you’ve experienced a mold problem in your home or there’s evidence of insects or rodents inside your ductwork, it’s time for a thorough cleaning to prevent whole-home contamination.

Be cautious when hiring a contractor, though. “In the air duct business, lots of companies use machines that aren’t really effective or could potentially damage the ducts,” warns Mr. Benbenishti. “Some companies use negative pressure to pull out the dust while others use running brushes. Those methods are fine for basic maintenance, but they’re not as effective. And if the machine isn’t advanced enough to stop if something gets stuck, it can keep rotating and damage the inside of the ducts.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should I have my air ducts, dryer vents and gutters maintained?

A: We usually recommend maintenance services once a year for those systems. However, if your house has a lot of trees near the roof, you might need your gutters cleaned more often. We’ll talk to you about your specific needs and give you personalized recommendations.

Q: What’s the advantage of having my gutters regularly cleaned?

A: If your gutters are cleaned on a regular basis, water will flow through them better, which will prevent foundation problems, water damage to walls and fascia, and dry rot.

Q: Why is it important to clean my air ducts?

A: Every year, dust builds up inside your air ducts, which can cause leaks and slow down your HVAC system. When you have your ducts cleaned, you ensure that every time you turn on your furnace or air conditioner, you’re getting clean air flow in your home.

Q: Why do I need to clean my dryer vents?

A: Every year in the United States, about 15,000 houses burn down because of clogged dryer vents. Just the other day, we cleaned out a dryer vent that was packed with lint and a bird nest. If the client kept using that dryer, they could have started a fire. Regular dryer vent cleaning also keeps your dryer running smoothly, helps prolong its lifespan and saves on energy costs.

Q: Are there any devices that can tell me when my dryer vent needs to be cleaned?

A: Yes. There’s a device that you can connect to the back of your dryer that tells you if the vent gets clogged. Some newer machines have this device built in already. It monitors the heat of your machine and beeps if the air becomes too hot.

Q: How far in advance do I need to make an appointment?

A: We can usually accommodate you within one week of your initial call. However, some seasons are busier than others, so it’s always smart to set an appointment as early as possible.

Q: Can you install UV filters in my home?

A: Yes. Especially right now with COVID, people like to use sanitizers and systems that keep their homes even cleaner. But even if you have a very good air filter, UV light does a better job. UV light filters kill all the bacteria, viruses, mold, and other organisms that enter and exit your HVAC system. They can be added to almost every central system, and they’re affordable for most homeowners.

Rafi Benbenishti: Home Repair Extraordinaire

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

MARTINEZ — Following an unplanned relocation to an unfamiliar country, Rafi Benbenishti found his professional calling in the home maintenance and repair industry. “I’m originally from Israel,” he explains. “In 2000, I went traveling abroad and visited Thailand, Australia, and the Philippines, to name a few. Eventually, I came to the United States, where my brother was living at the time. What was meant to be a short visit ended up being a permanent stay. I started working in the home repair industry and spent the next several years learning everything from duct repair to insulation upgrades. In 2011, I opened my own home maintenance and repair company, and I’ve been going strong ever since.”

Today, as owner of HSR, Rafi says his favorite part of his job is solving his customers’ problems. “A lot of times, when we go out to a job, the customer will tell us they’ve already had another company out and they weren’t able to solve the issue. It’s very satisfying when we’re able to find the solution and take care of everything for an affordable price.”

A resident of Martinez (where he lives with his wife, Shirley, and their two children), Rafi spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I love extreme sports like surfing, jet skiing and snowboarding,” he details. “My family and I like to do a lot of these things together. For example, in the summer, we’ll get together with friends and family at the lake and spend the day jet skiing. I also like playing with RC cars, drones and pretty much any other kind of gadget.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Rafi says he strives to bring a family dynamic to his company. “Our employees know that as long as they care for the business like it was their own, they’ll be taken care of as one of our own. We work together as one big family toward the shared goal of making our customers happy. I know that if I take care of my employees, they’re going to take care of our customers, and that’s a foundation for a successful business.”

  • Avoiding Fire Hazards With Dryer Vent Maintenance

MARTINEZ — Fifteen thousand homes burned. Fifteen deaths. Four hundred injuries. $99 million in property damage. Contrary to what you might expect, these disturbing annual figures aren’t the result of arson or wildfire. The real culprit is much less probable: clogged dryer vents. Surprised? Small wonder—like most homeowners, you likely pay little mind to this hidden component of your laundry center. However, by doing so, you leave yourself vulnerable to a substantial risk.

Before we talk about dryer vent safety, it’s good to get an understanding of how dryer vents function. A closed dryer vent works by forcing hot air out of a rigid galvanized pipe to the exterior of the home. This process typically generates condensation, which, when combined with lint and other debris, can create a clog in the pipe. As the pipe becomes clogged, airflow is restricted, leaving it unable to exhaust properly and posing a potential fire hazard.

To prevent this from occurring, you should regularly check a couple of areas of your dryer. First, check the vent line behind the dryer to make sure the line isn’t broken, smashed or crimped. Next, check the exterior vent (where the vent exhausts outside of the home). Remove any visible debris and test the airflow with your hand. If the airflow is strong, you can be reasonably sure the line is clear; if the airflow is weak, there may be some buildup inside. In the latter case, you should call a professional to have the line cleaned.

To further guard against dryer-related fire hazards, follow these tips:

    1. Avoid running your dryer while you’re asleep or away from home.

    2. Clean your dryer’s lint filter after every load. You should also check other areas of the dryer (around the drum, beneath the filter) to ensure there’s no hidden lint buildup, which can also lead to a fire.

    3. Once a year, have a professional clear out your dryer vent line. This annual maintenance step will give you greater assurance that your home is safe from dryer-related fire hazards.

  • Improving Indoor Air Quality With a UV Light

MARTINEZ — In the 21st century, indoor air quality has become a focal point of home maintenance. Especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, homeowners want to ensure their homes are clear of harmful germs and bacteria, not to mention dust, mold and other airborne contaminants. While standalone air purifiers are good tools for improving indoor air quality, a step further is to install a UV light on your HVAC system.

But how exactly does the addition of a UV light improve indoor air quality? By adding a germicidal capability to your system. Air filters can catch airborne pollutants like dust, pollen and dander, but they aren’t able to filter down to the size of viruses and germs. In contrast, UV rays are able to kill germs and bacteria on contact, which is why adding a light to your HVAC system will provide a whole new level of air purification. Talk to your HVAC contractor about options for adding a UV light to your HVAC system.

MARTINEZ — Rafi Benbenishti: UV light is a germicidal machine that is connected to your HVAC system and kills all of the bacteria, germs, and prevents for mold coming into your HVAC system. That’s one of the best machines you could use right now, especially those days with COVID. Making sure that you eliminate any bacteria, kills the mold and prevent from restricted air flow into the air duct system. At the same time, it reduces illness and allergies, improves air flow, and it makes sure that the HVAC system works much more efficiently. Also, it makes sure that it eliminates any odor in the system. Call your local professional, have them come over and fix the problem.

MARTINEZ — Rafi Benbenishti: Hi, I want to give you a tip about dryer vents. Very important facts about dryer vents: there is about 15,000 houses burned every year from clogged dryer vents, about 99 million dollars property damage, about 15 people die every year and 400 injured. The best advice I can give as far as dryer vents; Number one, make sure you never turn on the dryer when you’re not at home. Before you leave home, before you go to sleep, make sure the dryer is off. Before and after every load, you want to make sure that you clean the lint filter. Even check inside the dryer, around the drum, beneath the filter to make sure that there is no buildup of lint, because that could cause a fire.

The closed dryer vent works by forcing hot air outside of the rigid galvanized pipe to the exterior of the home. That pipe can get condensation and can cause the pipe to get clogged. As the pipe gets clogged, that would restrict the air flow of the dryer vent. That’s a potential fire hazard. You want to make sure that the dryer vent is completely cleaned and making sure that the air flow to the exterior part of the home. That is the best way to check by yourself to see if you have any issues, or potential issues for the future. Check the exterior vent, make sure the airflow is strong. If the airflow is strong, then you know that you don’t have a problem as of the moment.

In case you go to check the exterior vent and the airflow is not strong, or there is no airflow at all, that’s when you need to call your local expert and make sure that they come to check your dryer. Check behind the dryer. Make sure the vent is not broken or squished. Pretty much then, that’s when you want to call your local professional, have them come over and fix the problem.

  • Video: 4 Aspects of Home Maintenance

    Complete Video Transcription

MARTINEZ — Craig Anderson: You know, most people don’t realize the importance of their rain gutters. They’re actually on the house to protect the structure. A clogged rain gutter can actually lead to dry rot and water damage in the structure itself, or even a cracked foundation, which can cost you an enormous amount of money.

The dust that collects in your home can be caused by dirty air ducts in the home, and it’s important to keep those maintained to keep them clean. It’s also really good for allergies and asthma problems to keep your air ducts clean all the time.

The dryer vent is a very, very important issue that a lot of people forget about. The dryer vent is actually the leading cause of household fires in the United States. A clogged dryer vent can literally cost you your home and your life. So, it’s important to keep that dryer vent clean.

The insulation in your attic can be the cause of those rooms that get so cold in the winter or so hot in the summer and sometimes it’s contaminated by rodents. So, you want to make sure that your insulation in the attic is maintained properly, that it’s up to the proper standard, and that it’s clean. So, for all these things, it’s really important to consult a local professional. So, make sure that your home is maintained properly. It is one of your greatest investments.
