Company Philosophy

By taking the time to build a relationship with each customer, we’re able to truly understand their needs, give them realistic timelines and estimates, and meet or exceed their expectations.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for remodeling contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For JH Construction & Remodeling LLC, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: provide every project with first-rate service, regardless of its size. “We’ve built a reputation for delivering excellent customer service and quality results, and we’re very proud of that,” says owner James Humphrey. “Everything we do is based around maintaining our reputation, from using the best materials to taking a detail-oriented approach to each phase of our work.”

JH Construction & Remodeling has been remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, building room additions, performing whole house restorations and renovations, and providing general construction services for residential clients in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco Counties since 1991. The company has the in-house capabilities to handle every step of the remodeling process, from plumbing and electrical to tiling and finish carpentry, and it has experience remodeling homes in a wide variety of styles.

Unlike less experienced remodeling contractors whose owners delegate project responsibilities to less qualified employees, JH Construction & Remodeling provides every job with the hands-on expertise of Mr. Humphrey himself. “At the beginning of each workday, I talk to my employees about what needs to be done and make sure the jobsite is neat and organized,” he says. “Our clients really appreciate that I’m onsite every day–it makes them confident that their projects are being completed to the highest standards of quality.”

Another distinguishing attribute of JH Construction & Remodeling is its emphasis on building every job around the client’s goals, not its own. “We start each project by asking the homeowner about their purpose, their theme and what they’re hoping to get out of the remodel,” explains Mr. Humphrey. “Once we know their motivation for doing the project, we’re able to provide them with the best possible outcome.”

Industry Info

When planning a kitchen or bathroom remodel, your first step should be to collect your ideas.
Start by creating a scrapbook of design ideas—it’ll give your contractor a solid vision of what your remodeling project should look like. When you take these ideas to your contractor, make sure you have accurate measurements of the room and detail the location of the plumbing fixtures. Even if the contractor suggests something different, having a clear vision is still beneficial to the process. Once your contractor knows exactly what you want, you can start looking at sketches and shopping for materials like cabinets, countertops, and appliances. By getting all the materials in place before work begins, you’ll help ensure the building process goes as smoothly as possible.

Working with a full-service contractor on a remodeling project yields many tangible benefits. Since a full-service contractor works with you from the very beginning, they’ll understand what you expect and can stay on top of the project to make sure everything is going according to plan. Also, since every step of the project is linked to the next, there’s no need to explain what needs to be done to another contractor.

Before starting any remodeling project, it’s important to determine your budget in advance and stick to it—don’t decide what you want and then figure out how to pay for it later. Establish what you can afford to pay and design within that limit. Don’t be drawn into paying for a remodel you can’t really afford. Contractors can do a lot even on a limited budget, but they need to know your price limit so they can provide you with the best value.

When it comes to the bidding process, don’t automatically go with the lowest bidder—it’s likely the company uses subpar materials, and it’s even possible it doesn’t carry the proper insurance or licensing, which can put you at significant risk when it comes to potential damage or lawsuits

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start my project?

A: It depends on our current schedule—we might be able to start soon, or we might have to wait a few months. Regardless, we’ll give you a realistic timeframe so you know what to expect.

Q: Can you suggest suppliers for materials?

A: Yes. We purchase materials from several main suppliers, and we can give you their information so you can see your options and get their advice.

Q: Can you provide design ideas?

A: Yes. We have a draft person on staff if you have a simple design in mind, or we can send you to a few designers that we work with if your design is more complicated.

Q: Do you clean up at the end of every workday?

A: Absolutely. Clean-up is a huge thing for us—when we leave the jobsite at the end of the day, we want it to look cleaner than it did when we arrived in the morning.

Q: How will you keep my home clean while you’re working?

A: We protect all work areas with plastic and use a zip wall to cordon off certain spaces. We also vacuum regularly and sweep at the end of the day so the home stays clean throughout the construction process.

Q: Can you set up a temporary kitchen so I can stay at home while my kitchen is being remodeled?

A: Yes, we can help set up a space in which you can temporarily cook and store food. If you choose to stay at home during your remodel, we’ll try to make it as convenient as possible for you.

Q: Do you handle permits and inspections?

A: Yes.

Jim Humphrey: Trading Up

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

CAMPBELL — Jim Humphrey began his professional life in an office, but when he found himself growing increasingly dissatisfied, he decided to trade in his tie for a tool belt. “I’ve always had an interest in construction, especially after I took machine and wood shop back in high school,” he says. “Later in life, I found myself in a management position at Hewlett-Packard, but I eventually grew weary of that type of work. I really wanted to learn a trade, so I left HP and started doing finish carpentry with a friend. After four years as a journeyman, I got my contractor’s license in 1991 and started trimming houses before branching off into kitchen and bathroom remodeling.”

Today, as owner of JH Construction & Remodeling LLC, Jim says he enjoys the sense of satisfaction his job gives him, especially when given the chance to work on historic properties. “I grew up in the William Wright Ranch House, which is the oldest house in Sunnyvale, and that gave me a real passion for older architecture. I’ve been very blessed with the opportunity to work on several older properties, including turn-of-the-century Victorian homes.”

As a lifetime resident of the Bay Area, Jim expresses his appreciation for the local climate. “I’ve been everywhere from the Midwest to Southeast Asia, so I know what humidity is all about,” he says. “Based on my traveling experience, I would say we have some of the best weather in the world. In addition to the climate, I like the old architecture we have in San Jose and San Francisco.”

Outside of work, Jim enjoys spending time with his significant other, Philippa, and daughter, Gina. He also takes advantage of any opportunity to pursue his other passion: fishing. “I take a trip to Costa Rica every year and go sport fishing,” he says. “Over three to four days of fishing, we average about 25 fish, all of which are 8 to 9 feet long. It’s really exciting down there—you never know if you’re going to hook a marlin, a 50-pound wahoo or an 80-pound dorado.”

In regard to a life philosophy, Jim espouses the benefits of having an appreciative attitude. “When I was a kid, my mom always told me to count my blessings, and that’s something I still do today,” he says. “I think it’s important to be grateful for what you have and how you’ve been blessed—and I’ve truly been blessed!”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jim says he would head to his favorite fishing location. “If I won the lottery or something, I would probably buy a boat, go down to Costa Rica and fish 60 days out of the year. I’d absolutely love to be down there more often.”

Ask Me Anything!

  • The Benefits of a Radiant Barrier

CAMPBELL — Energy efficiency and in-home comfort are both high priorities for most California homeowners. One affordable home improvement measure that addresses both of these aspects is the installation of a radiant barrier in the attic. A radiant barrier mainly consists of sheets of low-E reflective insulation, which, unlike conventional insulation, reflects heat instead of absorbing it. When stapled to the bottoms of attic rafters, this material creates a barrier that reflects heat back out through the roof rather than letting it into the home.

Considering the low cost of installation, the benefits provided by a radiant barrier are substantial. First of all, when properly installed, it can reduce an attic’s temperature by as much as 35 degrees on a hot day. Even better, since the temperature reduction takes some of the load off your cooling system, a radiant barrier also lowers your energy bills, which makes it easy to recoup the installation expense.

Expert video tip
  • Video: A Simple Way to Reduce Attic Temperature

    Complete Video Transcription

CAMPBELL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your home tends to retain heat during the summer, there’s a simple, low-cost measure you can take to cool things down. Today we’re in Campbell with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jim Humphrey of JH Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jim Humphrey: Any tip that I might have for homeowners, nowadays, is everybody knows how important green building is now and there’s a product that I like out there; it’s called Low-E. It basically reduces your carbon footprint.

If you can imagine a piece of tin foil on both sides of a piece of foam that’s about three-sixteenths of an inch, and you take this stuff and you staple it to the bottoms of your rafters, leaving about three inches at the top of the ridge line and three inches from the bottom to let it breathe.

And, basically, how it works is the radiation that’s coming in it reflects it back so that it’s not radiating into the house, and you can actually put your hand on it and you can feel the heat, but when you take your hand away from it, you can’t feel the heat anymore, and it will reduce your attic probably 25 – 35 degrees in temperature even at the heat point of the day.

And, I had a customer come back to me two-and-a-half years after I did it at his place and he says, “You know, Jim, one of the best things you ever recommended that I do was to do this. That stuff really works. My energy bill is really down.”
