I'd tell them that they do a great job, our property looks nice, and Rich is a great guy. His wife is nice too. All of his workers are nice. They're great. They really are.

Quite a few times my husband has had to call for Rich's advice on watering and issues with the grass. He always comes out and answers our questions.

Kerri Landscape Services is a landscape design and construction company that serves residential clients throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The company builds custom outdoor spaces that include decks, water features such as ponds, outdoor kitchens and barbeques, and more. It’s also one of only six California contractors to offer “StoneMakers” decorative concrete retaining walls, which are considered more aesthetically pleasing than stack block walls and are only slightly more expensive.

He says the experience and skills he has accumulated over that time have given him an excellent understanding of every aspect of landscaping. “My crew members and I use our years of combined knowledge to create beautiful and functional environments.”

Comparative Summary

Kerri Landscape Services has been creating custom outdoor spaces for residential clients in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties since 1994. The company builds custom outdoor spaces that include features such as decks, ponds, and outdoor kitchens and barbeques. “We’re a one-stop shop for installations,” says owner Rich Kerri. “We can do decking, masonry, woodwork, water features–anything outside with the exception of swimming pools.”

When a client first contacts Kerri Landscape Services, the company’s first step is to understand the extent of the proposed project. “We need to know what they’re looking for,” says Mr. Kerri. “We work in partnership with our customers to create personalized designs. Different people have different expectations, and we try to cater to them all.”

With two professional designers on staff, Kerri Landscape Services is equipped to help clients create plans that are both practical and affordable. “We work with customers’ budgets so they’ll be comfortable with the scope of their projects, and we try to give them the most value for their money,” says Mr. Kerri.

When the initial plan is finished, Kerri Landscape Services bids the entire project in the form of a menu. “Demolition, drainage, planting, irrigation–each step costs a certain amount of money,” explains Mr. Kerri. “We itemize the project so the homeowner can have it done in phases. With the numbers right in front of them, we can discuss how we’re going to bring the plan to fruition.”

Landscape lighting is one of Kerri Landscape Services’ specialties. “We consider it more than just selling fixtures,” says Mr. Kerri. “We try to create a landscape portrait of the yard and house at night.” All of the company’s foremen have been trained to install lighting systems properly and safely. If a client is hesitant about committing to a lighting system, Kerri Landscape Services has demo kits with temporary lights that can be set up around the yard.

Mr. Kerri says keeping an open line of communication with his clients is very important to Kerri Landscape Services’ success. “Some people leave early in the morning and come home late,” he explains. “We keep those customers informed by sending them daily email updates. That way, they know how things are going and are made aware of any issues. We want to always keep them in the loop.”

Industry Info

When planning a landscaping budget, remember that costs don’t end with the initial building process. It helps to think of each part of the landscape as an individual project and create budgets accordingly. You also need to figure in maintenance costs and other recurring expenditures. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

What plants do I want? Consider a variety of plants and check their costs, sizes and growth rates. Cheap, fast growing plants typically cost more to maintain because they require more pruning. Slower growing plants may cost more initially, but they’ll save money on long-term maintenance.

What types of fences are available? Picket, panel, wood, vinyl, chain link—they all differ in cost and benefits.

What materials do I need? The types of materials will vary depending on what you’re building (patios, decks, arbors). Determine how much these materials cost before making a final choice.

Do I want special fixtures? What elements can I live without? Create your perfect vision of the landscaping project and then alter it according to your budget.

What will be the final cost (including maintenance)? You can calculate the approximate costs of your desired landscape by talking to professionals or looking online at similar projects.

When you’re ready to begin a landscaping project, you should hire an experienced contractor that can thoroughly explain your options and deliver on your vision. “There are people in this business who call themselves landscapers, but they’re not always professionals,” says Rich Kerri, owner of Kerri Landscape Services in Livermore. “For example, the person or company you hire should have the knowledge to create an irrigation system that’s properly pressurized.”

A: Regardless of the size and scope of our jobs, we schedule them on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, we should be able to give you a rough idea of our availability up front. Often, the starting time is dependent upon how long it takes to complete the design and plan the project according to the client’s specifications.

Q: What kind of payment options do you offer?

Q: How many crews do you have?

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Rich Kerri

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Rich Kerri is a 33-year veteran of the landscaping industry and owner of Kerri Landscape Services, a Diamond Certified company since 2009. He can be reached at (925) 567-3965 or by email.

Rich Kerri: Alfresco Architect

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

LIVERMORE — Rich Kerri originally wanted to design buildings for a living, but he eventually found he was better suited for designing landscapes. “All through junior high and high school, I planned on becoming an architect,” he recounts. “I even took drawing classes to get ahead of the game. At one point, I started doing landscaping work as a summer job. I found that I enjoyed working outdoors and seeing the results of my work firsthand. Over time, I realized it might be a better option for me to learn about horticulture and landscape design than go through all the math courses required to be an architect. Ultimately, I decided to go that route, and it has worked out great!”

Today, as owner of Kerri Landscape Services, Rich says his favorite part of his job is watching projects go from conception to completion. “I really like seeing an idea come to life. It usually starts as a pencil drawing and then gradually becomes something real and tangible, so it’s always fulfilling to see the finished product.”

A resident of Livermore (where he lives with his wife and business partner, Debbie) Rich expresses his appreciation for the Bay Area’s temperate weather and diverse topography. “Besides working outdoors, I do a lot of outdoor activities in my free time. Living in the Bay Area, the great weather and diverse landscape afford me the opportunity to pursue a lot of different things, which makes life a lot more fun.”

When he’s not hard at work, Rich says he’s usually hard at play. “I work long days so I can take big days off. I really like motorsports, whether it’s boating in the delta or riding ATVs in the desert. Basically, if it has a motor, I’ll play with it.” Besides going big with his hobbies, Rich also likes to go big with traveling. “My wife and I make it a point to travel regularly. We went to Germany last year and just recently got back from a safari in Africa.” In addition to sports and travel, Rich enjoys spending time with his two grown children, Katie and Clay, both of whom live in San Francisco.

In regard to his professional career, Rich espouses the importance of keeping customers satisfied. “Our company byline is, ‘The ultimate in customer satisfaction,’ and we make sure our work and service reflect that,” he explains. “We always try to give homeowners the best value for their money. Even if we have to cut into our margin, we’d rather lose money than leave a client feeling short-changed.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Rich says he’d get started on his to-do list. “I’m not the kind of guy who can just sit around, so I’d need to find something to keep myself occupied. To start, I’d probably finish some projects around my house and do some maintenance on my vehicles. Between my property and my toys, I have quite a few things to keep me busy.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first car?
A: A 1965 Ford pickup.

Q: What’s your favorite kind of food?
A: Mexican.

Q: What’s your favorite Bay Area brewery?
A: Altamont Beer Works in Livermore.

Q: What kinds of movies do you like?
A: Action movies and Westerns.

Q: Who’s your favorite Western movie actor?
A: John Wayne.

  • The Benefits of Bark Mulch

LIVERMORE — If you’re looking for an economical way to improve the look and performance of your garden or landscape, consider adding a new layer of bark mulch. Bark mulch offers several functional benefits, including:

    Water retention
Mulch decreases evaporation, which means more water goes to your plants.

    Soil temperature regulation
Mulch keeps the soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

    Weed blocking
Mulch creates a barrier that keeps weeds down, which means less work for you.

As if these practical advantages weren’t enough, bark mulch offers one more benefit: it looks good! Like a fresh coat of wax on your car, a new layer of mulch puts a finishing touch on your yard, resulting in a thriving and beautiful landscape.

LIVERMORE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re looking for an economical way to improve your garden’s looks and performance, consider the benefits of bark mulch. Today we’re in Livermore with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Rich Kerri of Kerri Landscape Services to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Rich Kerri: Question we get asked all the time is, why should I install bark mulch? Bark mulch is really important in just the ecosystem of the landscape. It helps keep water in, so it slows down evaporation. It keeps the soil temperature cool around the roots in the summertime and keeps it warm in the wintertime. It also keeps the weeds down so you don’t have to do as much maintenance. And finally, it’s like waxing your car, it puts a finishing touch on the yard.
