In addition to painting all types of interior and exterior surfaces, the company has special expertise with door renovations, refinishes and custom finishes; decorative and faux finishes like wood grain imitation, Venetian plaster, and stone and marble imitation; and more.

Co-owner Eva Kissova says Kiss Painting’s stylistic approach to painting has allowed the company to stand out in its industry. “Every artist has their own style, so I think that’s what makes us different—our customers like the way we paint and want our artistic eye on their projects. We utilize our knowledge and resources to offer our clients the very best, and they really appreciate that.”

Kiss Painting is also known for its color matching and design services, which Ms. Kissova says is important for achieving clients’ goals. “We know it can be difficult to find the right colors for certain situations, so the fact that we can create custom colors is very helpful. When we’re able to help a client make their home look exactly how they envisioned, it’s a rewarding feeling.”

Company Philosophy

“Our goal on every project is to make sure the client is 100 percent satisfied with the outcome, so we focus on doing a great job and treating them well throughout the process. Even if it takes longer than estimated to complete a job to the customer’s satisfaction, we’re happy to do it.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Kiss Painting, the keys to keeping clients happy are simple: take an artistic approach to their projects and make sure they get exactly what they envisioned. “Our customers like the way we paint and want our artistic eye on their projects, which makes us stand out from other contractors,” says co-owner Eva Kissova. “By drawing upon our years of experience and industry knowledge, we’re able to offer our clients the absolute best.”

Kiss Painting has been providing painting services for residential and commercial clients in Marin and Sonoma Counties, the East Bay, the South Bay, and San Francisco since 2011. The company has the training and equipment to paint all types of interior and exterior surfaces, and it also has special expertise with door renovations; refinishes and custom finishes; and decorative and faux finishes like wood grain imitation, Venetian plaster, and stone and marble imitation.

Unlike less experienced painting companies that use outdated methods and materials in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Kiss Painting prioritizes staying up-to-date on the latest advancements in the industry. “We frequently test new products so we can learn which ones will work best for different situations,” says Ms. Kissova. “We also use products that aren’t available at regular paint stores because we prefer their quality.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Kiss Painting is its ability to make custom colors onsite, which Ms. Kissova says isn’t a common practice in the painting industry. “Many of our clients have never seen a painter make custom colors, but we do it all the time. If a client picks a color and decides it isn’t quite right after the first coat is applied, we can adjust it for the second coat. We can also make new colors from scratch, which means we can customize the look of each room in a home by considering factors like furniture and window reflections.”

Industry Info

When it comes to choosing colors for an exterior painting project, there are several factors to consider.

Every home is unique in its own way, and styles and trends vary when it comes to things like substrate, so it’s important to consider these types of variables before choosing a color palette for an exterior painting project. You should also take environmental factors into account. If you have a nice garden or landscape, consider tying these elements to your home’s color scheme. You can even coordinate with other homes in your neighborhood while simultaneously giving your house distinctive qualities that make it stand out.

Even if you choose a simple color scheme for your home, there are ways to make it stand out. If you’re painting your house green with a cream-colored trim, for example, you might be worried that this color scheme is too plain, in which case you should consider a measure like painting the front door an elegant accent color. Small touches like these can allow you to make a statement with your home’s color scheme and increase the value of your property within the neighborhood.

Another often-overlooked factor to consider when choosing paint colors is your home’s position in relation to the sun. In some instances, light can wash out colors, but in others, it can accentuate them. For example, if the front of your home has an eastern exposure, you have to consider how the light will affect the paint colors you choose. Make sure there’s enough distinction between the stucco and the trim surfaces so they’ll both stand out and create an aesthetically pleasing effect.

When it comes to the type of paint you use for your exterior painting project, remember that choosing Green products can bring numerous benefits. “A lot of people are using environmentally-friendly paint these days,” affirms Eva Kissova, co-owner of Kiss Painting in San Rafael. “In the past, some homeowners weren’t sure about the quality of these products and assumed they were much more expensive than conventional paints, but that’s not the case at all.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the process for setting up a painting project?
A: After the initial phone or email conversation, we’ll meet in person so we can talk about the details of your project. Once that’s done, we’ll send you an estimate. If the project meets your approval, we’ll set up a start date.

Q: How should I prepare for my painting project?
A: You’ll save time and money if you move your furniture (we can help with heavy pieces) and remove artwork from the walls before we start painting. We can do these things for you, but we’ll have to charge a little more. We don’t expect you to do any masking.

Q: Can you recommend environmentally-friendly paint to use on my home?
A: Yes. In our experience, the best environmentally-friendly paint is sold by Ecohome Improvement. We’ve worked with several of the products they carry and they’re all very good.

Q: Do you need to remove my front door to refinish it?
A: Most of the time, we prefer to remove the door because it’s easier to refinish it and the final result is much better. However, with some types of doors and finishes, we can leave the door on without affecting the appearance.

Q: How will you secure my house after you remove my door?
A: We’ll cover the door opening with plastic while we’re working and reinstall the door at the end of each workday.

Q: How long will the varnish last on my door?
A: According to the manufacturer, the varnish should last about five years. If you notice the varnish is getting dull or has a slightly different appearance, it’s time to recoat.

Eva Kissova: Mastering a New Trade

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAFAEL — After earning not one but two master’s degrees, the last thing Eva Kissova expected was that she’d start a house painting business, but that’s exactly what happened. “I have master’s degrees in education and environmental management,” she affirms. “Unfortunately, I finished college right before the economy crashed in 2008 and spent the next two years trying to find work, to no avail. Eventually, I decided to switch gears entirely and start a business with my father, who is a professional house painter.”

While Eva lacked hands-on experience in the painting trade, she made up for it with an aptitude for management, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. “I knew if my father and I combined our abilities, we’d make a good team,” she says. “The next few years were very busy for me. I’d spend the early mornings and weekends handling the business side of things, while my weekdays were spent in the field painting with my father and learning the trade. Seven years later, I’m still very busy running the business, but I have a lot more knowledge and confidence.”

Today, as owner of Kiss Painting, Eva says her favorite part of her job is creating positive transformations. “I enjoy taking something run-down and ugly and making it look nice again. In some cases, we’ll walk into a home where the walls are blank, and when we walk out again, they’re covered in beautiful colors. It’s very rewarding to create beauty where there was none before.”

A resident of San Rafael, Eva spends the bulk of her free time with her two-year-old daughter, Isabelle. “Before I became a mother, my main hobby was dancing—particularly ice dancing, which is like ballroom dancing on ice,” she explains. “These days, as a mom and a business owner, I don’t have as much time for that. However, if raising my daughter could be considered a hobby, I’d say it’s a beautiful hobby to have. When she’s older, I’ll have time for dancing, but for now I’m happy with this stage of my life.”

In her life and career, Eva attributes her success to a strong focus and a hardworking attitude. “If you want to succeed at something, you need to work hard and stay focused,” she affirms. “When I first started in painting, I knew nothing, but the more I worked and learned, the more confident I became. It wasn’t easy, but I didn’t let adversity stop me—I just kept at it. Overall, this taught me to trust in myself and my abilities. It makes me feel like I’m capable of anything.”

When asked the first thing she’d do if she were to retire tomorrow, Eva says she would take a break. “I would go to Hawaii and just put my feet up for two weeks,” she laughs. “After that, I would get back into dancing. And if that wasn’t enough, I might start another business.”

  • Extending the Lifespan of Exterior Paint

SAN RAFAEL — Many homeowners think they’re getting “the most for their money” by waiting until their house paint has completely failed before repainting. However, in reality, this tactic doesn’t save money—it actually wastes it. A far more cost-effective strategy is to invest in frequent paint touch-up services. This will extend the lifespan of your original paint job and give you a better overall value for your investment.

Consider the example of exterior door paint. It takes a lot of work to repaint a door after the paint has failed—all the existing paint has to be removed and the door must be fully sanded down, which is expensive. A more cost-effective option is to service the door before the paint fails. In this case, since the paint is still good, all that’s required is to add a new coat of varnish. In total, this service is roughly one-third the cost of a full repainting job. So, even though you’re paying for more frequent service, you’ll save money in the long term by extending the lifespan of the original paint job.

The same goes for your house paint in general. If you wait until the paint starts peeling, you’ll need a full repainting job that includes a lot of prep work. In contrast, if you have your house paint serviced before it fails, all that’s needed is a good pressure washing and an additional coat of paint. Basically, it’s like getting a whole new paint job for a fraction of the cost!

Keep in mind that the frequency of paint touch-up services should depend on how much sun exposure your home receives. For example, if your front door faces north or is shaded by an overhang, it may only need touch-up service every five to seven years; in contrast, if it faces south and isn’t shaded, it may require service every three or four years due to accelerated wear from sun exposure. Still, by servicing your home’s painted exterior elements proactively rather than reactively, you’ll get a far better value for your original investment.

I just thought the man who came out and did the painting was so talented. I just absolutely loved them to death and he came with a lot of culture and his art is not like most people's art and you can't find just anybody who does what he does.

Just the talent that he had to custom make every stain that he used and he got it exact color that I wanted and he comes from a different country and a different culture and he is able to show his culture through his work and you get that feeling and the fact that he is not a painter and he is a stainer and all the work he did for me was staining.
