Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for roofing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Los Gatos Roofing, the key to achieving and maintaining customer satisfaction is providing a single point of contact for every project–a journeyman roofer who is responsible for the completion of each phase, from beginning to end. “This approach allows the homeowner to follow up with the same person throughout the entire job,” says General Manager Cameron Radonich. “We want to make sure our clients are satisfied with every aspect of their roofing projects.”

Unlike roofing companies that limit their services to installations and force clients to hire separate contractors for repairs and maintenance, Los Gatos Roofing offers a full range of services that are designed to optimize customer satisfaction. “We obtain permits from local municipalities, work with suppliers to get the best materials and much more,” says Mr. Radonich. “After every job, we want the client to feel like we took care of all the details and did the best possible work for them.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Los Gatos Roofing provides each crew with its own dump truck, which allows them to clean up jobsites at the end of each work day and haul away waste instead of leaving it for the end of the project. “We always clean up the premises and use a magnet sweep to pick up nails and metal,” adds Mr. Radonich. “We also don’t leave dumpsters or piles of debris in driveways or yards. We’re very respectful of our clients’ properties.”

Industry Info

Green roofing services can simultaneously reduce your energy bills and help the environment. Most industries are changing to meet customer demands for Greener products and services, and the roofing industry is no exception. “It’s challenging to be Green in this industry, specifically because ‘Green’ isn’t clearly defined for roofers, but many companies are doing their best to offer eco-friendly services,” says Cameron Radonich, general manager of Los Gatos Roofing in San Jose.

Before you decide to hire an environmentally-friendly contractor, consider the following information to determine if Green roofing is right for you:

Repair. Repair is almost always a Greener option than replacement, and it’s usually more cost-efficient as well. Make sure your roofing contractor is able to honestly present your options instead of defaulting to replacement.

Products. For a roofing material to be considered Green, several factors must be taken into account, including its composition and manufacturing process. Clay tile, for example, is one of the most popular Green roofing options because of the way it’s naturally produced. “Clay tiles are made from the earth, and when it’s time to tear them off, they can be returned to the earth,” explains Mr. Radonich.

Energy efficiency. Energy-efficient roofing products include cool roofs, roof coatings and even living roofs that prevent energy absorption. “Radiant barrier products can also make your home more energy efficient,” adds Mr. Radonich. “They keep radiant heat from entering your home and reduce attic temperatures so you don’t have to run your air conditioner as often.”

Insulation. New and existing roofs can benefit from additional roof insulation, regardless of the climate in which you live. Well-insulated roofs keep home temperatures more stable and lower heating and cooling costs.

State codes and manufacturer recommendations. “One of the best ways to be Green is to follow the new California energy and building codes,” shares Mr. Radonich. In fact, when roofers don’t install roofs to code or to manufacturers’ specifications, they can void energy efficiency ratings that are promised by the manufacturers. Correct installation preserves design features that preserve energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When can you start my roofing project?

A: That depends on the time of year. We’ll be honest with you—if we can’t start your job soon, we’ll put you on a waiting list. Then we’ll try to schedule the project so it fits your plans and avoids any big events or family vacations.

Q: How long will my roofing project take to complete?

A: It depends on the scope of the work, but we’ll provide you with a detailed schedule at the beginning of the project and do our best to follow it.

Q: Are there any extra costs once you start my roofing project?

A: We’re very upfront about extra costs. Typically, we only charge extra if we find termite or dry rot damage, because that requires us to tear off the roof and inspect the deck.

Q: Are your installers well-trained and qualified?

A: Yes. All our installers are factory-trained and certified, and they follow the most stringent safety measures to ensure each job is completed to an exceptionally high standard. From estimating and tear-off to installation and final inspection, they treat every customer with honesty and integrity.

Q: Will you leave a mess at my house?

A: No. Each of our crews has its own dump truck, and they always clean up the jobsite at the end of every work day. They even use a magnet sweep to pick up nails and metal. Once we’ve completed your job, our crews will immediately finish the cleanup.

Cameron Radonich: Bring it on Home

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — Aiming for a career in professional sports, Cameron Radonich was in the process of earning his master’s degree when a simple realization led to an abrupt change in direction. “I was working on a master’s in organizational leadership, with the intention of coaching professionally,” he explains. “Halfway through the program, however, I realized I wasn’t willing to take a job outside of the Bay Area.” Recognizing that this provision was incompatible with his coaching aspirations, Cameron opted to take a route that would fulfill both his personal and professional criterion: he joined his father’s business, Los Gatos Roofing. “Going to work for my father gave me an opportunity to remain in my hometown while applying my formal education in a professional capacity.”

Today, as Los Gatos Roofing’s marketing director, Cameron says he enjoys his daily interactions with co-workers and customers most of all. “My favorite part about my job is the people I work with. I like the mentality of the people who work in construction, and I also enjoy being able to work with homeowners.”

Residing in San Jose with his wife, Katie, and their daughter, Gulianna, Cameron expresses his appreciation for both the local community and the region’s topographical attributes. “There’s a highly educated population base here in the Silicon Valley, so there are always good conversations to be had,” he says. “I also love the Santa Cruz Mountains. We have a family ranch up there, and I have a lot of fond memories from spending time there during my childhood.”

Outside of work, Cameron engages in a variety of pastimes, from playing sports to winemaking. “My favorite thing to do is play baseball and softball, which I do at least once a week, whether with friends or in my local league. I’ve also become very interested in winemaking—in fact, we recently started looking into developing the land on our ranch into a vineyard.”

In his life and career, Cameron finds inspiration in a quote from 19th century American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson. “The quote I have on my wall is basically Emerson’s definition of success, which is to have left the world a better place,” he explains. “My favorite parts are where he says, ‘To laugh often and much’ and ‘to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children.’ I try to apply this in my own life by making my business a place where employees enjoy coming to work and customers feel appreciated.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Cameron says he would redirect his vocational efforts and apply them toward winemaking. “I’d spend more time developing our family’s vineyard and trying to make that successful.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you have a favorite sports team?
A: The Oakland A’s and the San Francisco 49ers.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: The past—there are parts of history I’m fascinated with and would like to see firsthand.

Q: If you could drive any car, what would it be?
A: A 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback.

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: Basil and tomatoes.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?
A: Any kind of ball—baseball, softball, tennis ball, whatever.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Air Jordan basketball shoes. I have about 30 pairs!

  • A Systematic Approach to Roofing

SAN JOSE — When it comes to choosing materials for a new roof, there are a couple of ways to go about it. Many homeowners opt to trust the expertise of their roofing contractors and let them use the materials they would normally use. However, a much better option is to ask your contractor to install a complete roofing system.

The problem with leaving the choice of materials up to a contractor is that some roofers will install the cheapest ones they can find. When materials are chosen based on price alone, the quality between components like shingles, underlayment, and ventilation can vary significantly and potentially jeopardize the integrity of your roof. In contrast, when you have a complete roofing system installed, materials are chosen by manufacturer rather than price. Whether you go with Owens Corning or CertainTeed, you’ll get shingles, underlayment, ventilation and all other materials from that manufacturer, which will ensure that all the components used to build your roof are of equal caliber.

This systematic approach also provides assurance that the manufacturer you choose will back up your entire roof, not just certain components. In addition, when installing a complete system, most qualified contractors offer extended warranties on their workmanship.

Expert video tip
  • Video: Considerations for Buying a Roofing System

    Complete Video Transcription

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: Prior to investing in a new roof, its good to know the full extent of your options. Today, we’re in Los Gatos with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Cameron Radonich of Los Gatos Roofing to learn more about the benefits of a manufactured roofing system.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Cameron Radonich: When shopping for a new roof, it’s important to talk to a contractor who can offer you a complete manufacturer roofing system.

A lot of roofers when promising a shingle, will go out and buy whatever the cheapest components they can find to that roof. So, if that means cheap felt, they put on cheap felt. And if they can find a generic brand of ventilation, they do that.

A good contractor should be able to offer you a complete roofing system. So, if Owens Corning or CertainTeed shingles are what you choose, then you use that entire line. If you choose a CertainTeed shingle, let’s use CertainTeed felt, CertainTeed starter, CertainTeed ventilation and, obviously, the shingle itself. And if you choose Owens Corning, then use Owens Corning felt, starter, and ventilation.

This provides you the assurance that the manufacturer will back up your entire roof system, and in most cases, a qualified contractor can usually give you an extended warranty on the actual workmanship of their product.
