Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for remodeling contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For MCA Remodeling Inc., the best way to achieve high levels of customer satisfaction is to approach each job on an individual basis. “Every project is different, so we really focus on what our clients want and help them bring their ideas to reality,” says co-owner Mitch Alves. “Our goal is to ensure each client is 100 percent satisfied from start to finish.”

MCA Remodeling has been remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, installing pavers and hardscapes, and offering various general contracting services to residential and commercial clients in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa Counties since 2013. The family-owned and operated company takes a full-service approach to each project, from the initial design/planning stages to the finishing touches.

Unlike construction firms whose owners send less experienced salespeople or estimators to bid for jobs, MCA Remodeling is always represented by Mr. Alves or his wife, co-owner Leslie Alves. “We go to homes, give estimates and sign the contracts,” he explains. “No only that, I project-manage and personally inspect every job. I look at each project like a long-term relationship with the client, and people really respond to that.”

Ultimately, Mr. Alves sees MCA Remodeling’s ability to provide fair pricing and excellent value as its biggest attribute. “Our bids usually fall in the middle of the spectrum, and we’re known for giving our clients a good value,” he says. “We offer quality work and professionalism, including 24/7 access to my expertise, and we strive to do the work correctly the first time.”

Industry Info

Trusting your remodeling contractor is important for your comfort and the outcome of your job.

It’s just a little project, right? As long as the contractor is licensed and insured, what’s the harm in choosing the lowest bid or the first contractor you call? Well, according to building experts, rushing the process of choosing a contractor can leave you frustrated, disappointed and left with a substandard product.

Mitch Alves, co-owner of MCA Remodeling Inc. in Union City, says trust is crucial when it comes to hiring a remodeling company. “There are a lot of complaints against our industry. Some contractors are making bad names for the good contractors. They aren’t licensed or bonded—they’re using other people’s licenses or taking money upfront and not returning to the job. Those are the things consumers need to be aware of.”

Mr. Alves says homeowners need to do their due diligence and research contractors they’re considering to make sure their work histories are clean. “Call references. Have the contractor give you more than three and actually talk to the people.”

Along with phone calls to references and license and insurance verification, Mr. Alves says good contractors should be willing to take potential clients to see jobs that are in progress. This enables you to see the workers in action, notice the care given to the jobsite and possibly even talk to current clients. It also gives you a chance to ask questions about the planning and construction elements, as well as spend time getting to know your contractor. After all, they’ll be in your home and have access to your personal space, so respect, honesty, transparency and a good working relationship will matter.

Mr. Alves says that when you talk to a contractor, you should get answers to your questions and feel comfortable with their willingness to help you envision the work. “Expect an open book. The contractor should give you full disclosure before you sign a contract with them. You have to trust your contractor 100 percent. If you don’t, you shouldn’t go through with the project.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you use subcontractors on your projects?
A: We don’t use subcontractors unless it’s for mechanical work, like a new HVAC system or ducting. Ninety-nine percent of the jobs we do are kept in-house.

Q: What types of warranties do you offer?
A: We offer a 10-year warranty on labor, and materials and products come with a variety of manufacturers’ warranties.

Q: Can you provide design services?
A: Yes, we can provide custom, 3-D design plans.

Q: Do you perform background checks on your crew members?
A: Yes. We’re pretty meticulous about the people we hire. Honesty and integrity are very important to us, so when we send someone to a client’s house, we make sure they’re presentable and professional.

Q: Are there any new advancements in kitchen and bathroom designs that I should know about?
A: When we started, we were designing kitchens with graph paper, drawing tiles and white cabinets. Now, not only can we create 3-D renderings for clients, the software can tell us details like the square footage of surfaces and the required components.

Mitch Alves: A Hands-On Inclination

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

UNION CITY — When asked how he got involved in home remodeling, Mitch Alves says it was just part of his upbringing. “My father and grandfather were both builders—real hands-on guys. I learned to do carpentry and masonry work at a young age and went right into the trades following high school. I wound up working for one of the largest general contractors in the United States, where I was eventually promoted to Western Regional Manager.”

Despite his prominent position, Mitch felt drawn toward a more hands-on professional situation. “As an employee of another contractor, I would often see flaws in the way things were done,” he explains. “After a while, I started thinking, ‘I could do this better on my own.’ I wanted to go out there and make a difference with contracting in terms of quality and customer service. Eventually, I decided to take that path and get my contractor’s license.”

Today, as owner of MCA Remodeling Inc., Mitch says his favorite part of his job is making his clients happy. “I enjoy exceeding my clients’ expectations for their finished products. It’s very satisfying to see the smiles on their faces when it’s all said and done.”

A resident of Castro Valley (where he lives with his wife, Leslie), Mitch likes to spend his free time enjoying the outdoors. “We have some property on the north fork of the Stanislaus River, so we like to go up there when we can,” he details. “We do a lot of fishing and off-roading with our ATVs. In the winter, we like to go skiing at Tahoe.” Mitch and Leslie also enjoy spending quality time with their six children and three grandchildren.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Mitch espouses the importance of staying true to one’s word. “Basically, my philosophy is to let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no,’” he explains. “I’m more of an old-school, handshake agreement kind of guy, and I really pride myself on the fact that I stand by my word. When dealing with customers, you have to do what you say you’re going to do and be clear about it so there’s no miscommunication. If you can do that, you’ll do all right.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Mitch says he’d take an extended vacation. “My wife and I often talk about traveling, but it’s hard to pull away from the business for a long period of time. So, if I retired, we’d probably plan a big trip—maybe go overseas and see some more of the world.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you collect anything?

A: I collect watches.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Genghix Asian Fusion in Castro Valley.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?

A: The Oakland Raiders.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?

A: I’d probably go 20 or 30 years into the future to see how far technology has come.

Q: Pancakes or waffles?

A: Waffles.

  • Comparing Quartz and Granite Countertops

UNION CITY — When it comes to kitchen countertops, two of the most popular materials on the market are quartz and granite. Both materials are similar in some ways while very different in others. To make an informed choice, it’s a good idea to learn about these similarities and differences.

    Similarities

Fabrication/Installation: Both quartz and granite countertops are fabricated and installed in virtually the same way.

Dimensions: Regardless of what material it’s made of, your countertop will have the same thickness (typically two to three centimeters).

    Differences

Composition: Quartz is a man-made, non-porous material that is easy to clean and doesn’t require any auxiliary sealers. Granite, on the other hand, is a natural stone product. Any stone product is porous, which means it will absorb liquids and form stains. For this reason, granite countertops need to be sealed and resealed from time to time to protect against staining. Fortunately, if you get a quality sealer, your countertops should only need to be resealed every 25 years.

Price: You can get a granite stone slab for as little as $8 to $10 per square foot or as high as $150 per square foot. In contrast, quartz has a much narrower price range: $30 to $60 per square foot.

UNION CITY — Host, Sarah Rutan: Are you in the market for new kitchen countertops? If so, it’s a good idea to learn about your options. Today we’re in Union City with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mitch Alves of MCA Remodeling to learn about two popular choices.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Mitch Alves: Hi, I’m here to discuss the similarities and differences between quartz, which is man-made, and a granite or quartzite natural stone. The similarities between of the two are: they both are two or three centimeters in thickness, they’re both fabricated, and installed virtually in the same way. The differences are, one is man-made, non-porous, easy to clean, no requirements for sealers with a man-made quartz product. But with a granite product, any stone is porous, and you have to seal it, from time to time, to protect it from stains. You can get granite stone slabs for as low as $8-$10 for a square foot, and as high as $150+ a square foot. Where your quartzite man-made product will range usually between $30 a square foot and as high as $60 a square foot.
