Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Mike Chavez Painting, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: focus on meeting and exceeding the expectations of every client, regardless of the size of their project. “Most of our customers have already envisioned how they want their paint jobs to look, so we just make sure to give them everything they’re hoping for and more,” says owner Mike Chavez. “From suggesting ways to accentuate color to paying attention to tiny details, we strive to achieve results that leave them completely satisfied.”

Mike Chavez Painting has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential and commercial clients in Napa, Sonoma, and Marin Counties since 2009. The company is qualified to paint all types of surfaces, from bare wood to new sheetrock, and it also has the training and equipment to apply coatings to garage and industrial floors, paint and refinish cabinets, pressure wash exterior surfaces, and more.

Unlike less experienced painting contractors that take a “one size fits all” approach to every job, Mike Chavez Painting prides itself on its meticulous attention to detail. “My training was working on high-end estates alongside some of the best painters in Sonoma County, so I learned to have a good eye for detail,” explains Mr. Chavez. “My employees share the same mentality, which has resulted in a team culture of quality and professional pride.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Mike Chavez Painting is its dedication to jobsite cleanliness in every aspect of its work. “We’re sticklers about keeping things neat and clean on the job,” affirms Mr. Chavez. “From laying down protective tarps inside the customer’s house to putting away our tools at the end of the day, we make sure to keep the jobsite as tidy as possible.”

Industry Info

If you’re planning to touch up your home’s paint, make sure your old paint is still good. Following an interior or exterior painting project, it’s common for homeowners to keep any leftover paint to use for touch-ups in the future. However, if several years have gone by since you last used the paint, it’s important to verify its integrity before attempting any touch-up work. “If you still have some of the original paint that you used and it’s been sitting around for a long time, start by opening the can and inspecting the paint,” offers Mike Chavez, owner of Mike Chavez Painting in Santa Rosa. “Stir it up—does it still have a fluid consistency, or does it look lumpy or dried out? Smell it—does it smell normal, or does it have a foul odor like rotten eggs? If the consistency or smell of the paint is off, you should get a new can.”

Mr. Chavez says the lifespan of paint can vary depending on where it’s stored. “You should store paint in an interior space like a garage, where it’s protected from extremely hot or cold temperatures. Basically, as long as you don’t leave paint in your backyard, it should last for at least five years.”

Even if your paint is in good condition, you may find that once you apply it to a wall, it doesn’t blend in well. In this instance, Mr. Chavez recommends repainting the wall in its entirety. “If you’ve already started doing touch-ups and the paint isn’t blending very well, it’s possible that the wall paint itself has become faded,” he explains. “Try getting a new gallon of paint and just repainting the wall from corner to corner.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What measures do you take to ensure a durable final product?

A: It’s all about the preparation work. We take the time to make sure any chipped or loose paint has been removed from each surface, and we prime all bare wood before it gets caulked. These types of preparatory measures go a long way toward ensuring long-lasting quality.

Q: Can you paint hard-to-access areas?

A: Yes, we pride ourselves on being able to access areas that other contractors might consider unreachable. We’ll get scaffolding or other types of equipment in order to reach the area and do the job.

Q: How long should I expect my exterior paint job to last?

A: The typical life expectancy of an exterior paint job is between five and 10 years. However, with all the extra prep work that we do, you can expect your paint job to last 10 to 15 years.

Q: Can you help me choose paint colors?

A: Once you hire us for the job, we’re happy to do color consultations and accompany you to paint stores so you can look at different samples. That way, when we’re ready to start painting, you know exactly what you’re going to get.

Q: Do you provide free estimates?

A: Yes. After our initial meeting, we’ll set a follow-up appointment for a few days later and present our estimate.

Mike Chavez: Primed for Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

SANTA ROSA — When Mike Chavez was introduced to the painting trade by the father of a friend, he had little idea he was being primed for a permanent profession. “My buddy’s dad was a painter, and I worked for him during the summers in high school,” he recounts. “I remember leaving a jobsite one day, looking over the finished product as I drove away, and feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride. After high school, I worked for a couple of different painting contractors until I decided to get my license and start my own business.”

Today, as owner of Mike Chavez Painting, Mike says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “I enjoy meeting new customers and getting to know them during the course of the job. It also gives me a lot of satisfaction to learn their expectations for their projects and then give them exactly what they envisioned.”

A lifetime resident of Sonoma County, Mike expresses his appreciation for life in the North Bay. “This area has always been home to me,” he says. “I really love the diversity of our environment. Depending on which direction you go, you’re 20 minutes from the redwoods, the ocean or the Napa Valley, so there’s a lot to enjoy.”

Outside of work, Mike engages in a variety of activities, from hanging out with his fiancée, Amanda, to running and playing softball. “I love barbecuing and spending time with friends and family,” he says. “I also play in a coed softball league and like to go running in Annadel State Park.” When he’s not at home or out amongst nature, Mike likes playing the bass guitar and attending concerts and Giants games in San Francisco.

In his life and career, Mike espouses the importance of honesty. “I really believe that you’re only as good as your word, which is why I always deliver what I promise,” he explains. “My integrity is very important to me in how I live my life and run my business, and honesty is at the forefront of that.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Mike says he’d head south for an extended vacation. “I would probably take a trip through Central and South America and spend a month touring the different countries. On the other hand, I might just go to the Bahamas and kick back for a while.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could immediately master any musical instrument, what would you choose?
A: Bass guitar—even though I already play, I’m still not a master.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Hang out with my fiancée and watch a movie.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?
A: Sweet T’s Restaurant and Bar in Santa Rosa.

Q: What was your first concert?
A: Probably seeing my father play music years ago. He’s a cello player, and he used to play in a band that ran the local winery circuit.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Nuts.

  • An Important Step before Caulking

SANTA ROSA — Caulking is a useful technique for closing up exterior cracks and gaps that allow air and water to permeate your home. By making a home more weather- and draft-resistant, caulking can help protect exterior wood from rot while simultaneously improving energy efficiency. Additionally, caulking provides aesthetic benefits such as concealing unsightly gaps and making joints easier to keep clean.

If you’re planning to caulk your home’s exterior, keep in mind that all surfaces should be cleaned and primed prior to application. When caulking is applied to bare wood or a dirty surface, it’ll peel off a lot quicker and require early reapplication. To maximize the durability of your caulk job, make sure it has a clean, coated surface to stick to.

    Complete Video Transcription

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: Prior to applying caulking or another sealant to a wood surface, you’ll first want to make sure the surface is properly prepared. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mike Chavez of Mike Chavez Painting to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Mike Chavez: So, if you’re painting at your home – own home, I’d like to provide you with some advice. If you’re planning on doing any caulking or filling on the surface, you want to make sure that you prime that surface first. You want – you don’t want to do it on any bare wood. You want to make sure that your primer, or – excuse me – you want to make sure that your filler, or your caulking, has a clean surface to stick to. That way it’s going to last the longest for you.
